  • SEO: Joomla Category Page Optimization + Canonical Linking

    I'm wondering how best to optimize my Joomla site's SEO. I have pages with multiple articles on each page. Either via category-type pages, or via modules. In each case, I'm not wanting users to access the articles separately from the forward facing, menu-linked pages. I understand however that Joomla still generates a url for those articles, and Google can still crawl and display these articles separate from the pages. My question is what is the best way to control this so that my users get directed only to the front-facing pages? By using the canonical element for each article to point to the front-facing page it's on? Or is there a better method? Thanks for your help!

  • Procedural Planets, Heightmaps and Textures

    I am currently working on an OpenGL procedural planet generator. I hope to use it for a space RPG, that will not allow players to go down to the surface of a planet so I have ignored anything ROAM related. At the momement I am drawing a cube with VBOs and mapping onto a sphere. I am familiar with most fractal heightmap generating techniques and have already implemented my own version of midpoint displacement(not that useful in this case I know). My question is, what is the best way to procedurally generate the heightmap. I have looked at libnoise which allows me to make tilable heightmaps/textures, but as far as I can see I would need to generate a net like this. Leaving the tiling obvious. Could anyone advise me on the best route to take? Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks, Henry.

  • How can I superscript a single character throughout my site?

    Finishing up development work for a client and they have a late request to superscript every occurrence of the &reg character throughout the site. I merely get by with CSS, but not even sure CSS provides the best solution here. how can I make a global change to every occurrence of a single character in the site copy without going back and adding tags everywhere? if the best solution does involve inserting a span or other tag I'm thinking it could be accomplished with a database query (all the copy is wired up to a CMS).

    I'm developing a turn-based 2D RPG game. Everything's going fine except the lack of characters' sprites such as moving, attacking animation, etc.... By characters I mean both human-like and monster-like creatures. Is there a website providing sprites for free? Or a program (free or paid, whichever is fine) which will let me create sprites from scratch and automatically generate the images? Using your experiences in job interviewing, what do you think it would happen if I ask the interviewer to explain me why he think the company is the best company for me and why I should accept their answer? Do you think it would be a good think or bad thing to do? Edit: the idea of the question would not be to "challenge" the interviewer. The idea of the question would be to see what he thinks about the company, what values he thinks are given importance inside the company and what are the strong points of the company.

  • Architecture for dashbaord showing aggregated stats

    I'm trying to find the best architecture for an application that shows a dashboard with aggregated stats that come from another one (e.g. number of sales in the last 12 months, current sales this month, a fairly complex score, performance of users over last 30 days, etc.) There is a fair bit of business logic that lives in Application 1 but the aggregated data gets saved in Application 2 (dashboard). What's the best way to create the aggregate data? 1) Pull data directly from Application 1 database and duplicate business logic for score calculation etc. 2) Push data from Application 1 to Application 2 somehow 3) Aggregate data in Application 1 on the fly and provide and api for Application 2 4) Other (probably) Please suggest solutions, Thanks.

I want to display the events in my UI and I'm stuck as to what's the best way to do this. I can think of a few scenarios to handle this but all of them seem sub-optimal: Listen for and handle Recorded Events in both the UI and in the RecordingMgr After receiving the event in the RecordingMgr, raise it again so that the UI can pick it up Create a variable in RecordingMgr (e.g., a BindingList) that the UI can bind to and update it when an Event is received Ditch the RecordingMgr and just put the event recording logic in the UI What's the best approach? Something above or something else?

  • MySQLwith mutiple threads and processes

    I'm developing a telecom messaging platform in C, and I'm going to need multiple processes to be working with MySQL DB. How can I make two processes read/write to/from a Mysql DB and, if/when one of them goes down, get the other to seamlessly take over the work until the dead process gets back to work? I was thinking/googling some options and am stuck in place where I don't know which one to choose. What I think so far is that table lock is not the best option to go for, as it will stall the other process until the table is unlocked. The other option is to use row-level locks or manual locks, but I can't find the best way to do it.

    The CTO called to inform me of a new project and in the process told me that my code is weird. He explained that my colleagues find it difficult to understand due to the overly complex, often new concepts and technologies used, which they are not familiar with. He asked me to maintain a simple code base and to think of the others that will inherit my changes. I've put considerable time into mastering LINQ and thread-safe coding. However, others don't seem to care nor are impressed by anything other than their paycheck. Do I have to keep it simple (stupid), just because others are not familiar with best practices and efficient coding? Or should I continue to do what I find best and write code my way?

  • Applying the Knuth-Plass algorithm (or something better?) to read two books with different length and amount of chapters in parallel

    I have a Bible reading plan that covers the whole Bible in 180 days. For the most of the time, I read 5 chapters in the Old Testament and 1 or 2 (1.5) chapters in the New Testament each day. The problem is that some chapters are longer than others (for example Psalm 119 which is 7 times longer than a average chapter in the Bible), and the plan I'm following doesn't take that in count. I end up with some days having a lot more to read than others. I thought I could use programming to make myself a better plan. I have a datastructure with a list of all chapters in the bible and their length in number of lines. (I found that the number of lines is the best criteria, but it could have been number of verses or number of words as well) I then started to think about this problem as a line wrap problem. Think of a chapter like a word, a day like a line and the whole plan as a paragraph. The "length" of a word (a chapter) is the number of lines in that chapter. I could then generate the best possible reading plan by applying a simplified Knuth-Plass algorithm to find the best breakpoints. This works well if I want to read the Bible from beginning to end. But I want to read a little from the new testament each day in parallel with the old testament. Of course I can run the Knuth-Plass algorithm on the Old Testament first, then on the New Testament and get two separate plans. But those plans merged is not a optimal plan. Worst-case days (days with extra much reading) in the New Testament plan will randomly occur on the same days as the worst-case days in the Old Testament. Since the New Testament have about 180*1.5 chapters, the plan is generally to read one chapter the first day, two the second, one the third etc... And I would like the plan for the Old Testament to compensate for this alternating length. So I will need a new and better algorithm, or I will have to use the Knuth-Plass algorithm in a way that I've not figured out. I think this could be a interesting and challenging nut for people interested in algorithms, so therefore I wanted to see if any of you have a good solution in mind.

    I recently bought an ssd drive 128 gb and i would like yo have your suggestions on partitiong and installing ubuntu 12.10 on it. First of all my drives are : HDD 640 Gb SSD Samsung 830 series 128 Gb Whats the best partitiong for theese drives ? 128 Gb is sure enormous amount of space only for / (root) . Is it a good choice if i make 2 partitions on ssd (20 Gb / and 100 /home) and leave hdd as backub drive for my data (files,movies,music etc) ? In this case what mount point must have hdd ? Can you suggest me the best partitiong for my drives ?

    I finished University around 4 years ago double degree in Software Eng/Comp Sci. Got my first job at a startup in my final year, was with them for 2.5 years then started my own business. So far everything is going great, lots of clients and stead work etc, but coming right out of uni and into a start up I never had any form or senior software engineer guiding my work or suggesting improvements etc... Whats the best way for me to improve & learn more? Books? MS Exams? Other? I develop in C#, ASP.NET/MVC. Update The problem isn't really with releasing products, I've released quite a few which are up and running with customers happy. It's more with quality of code, best practices, how do I know something I am code is correct, it may work but there may be ways of coding it much more efficiently or by adhering to some kind of standard Cheers for any responses!     I'm using a ASUS EeePC 901 and have some basic questions/issues. I installed 12.04 on the 4GB drive, selecting the option to erase it before doing so. Immediately after the installation I saw that Update Manager had over 100 updates pending. I attempted to install these, but was told that I had less than 100 MB remaining. Does the OS occupy all the other space? It seems that the best solution is to install 12.04 on the 16GB drive. Is this true? If I do this, what is the best way to erase the 4GB drive afterwards?

Should I link billing to my own credit card and then have the client pay me (they have to pay me to manage the account anyway), or should I have the client pay Google directly?     I am a college student, and I love to program, period. I code all kinds of things in different kinds of languages. Although I enjoy programming, I have an extremely hard time sticking to one project for a long time. I attribute this shortcoming to my high level of curiosity, exploring different technologies, languages, libraries, etc. What would be best? Should I settle down more and spend time on becoming an expert in one or two programming fields, or should I be more of a jack of all trades, trying out all kinds of new technologies, languages, programming methods, etc.? I'm guessing that somewhere in the middle would be best. I'm always amazed at how many developers are able to create one or two projects, and develop on them for years. What techniques do you guys employ to help you stay focused on a project?

  • Should HTTP Verbs Be Used Semantically?

    If I'm making a web application which integrates with a server-side backend, would it be considered best practice to use HTTP methods semantically? That is, for example, if I'm fetching data (e.g., to populate a menu, etc.), I would use GET, but to update data (e.g., save a record), I would use POST. (I realise there are other methods that may be even more appropriate, but we need to consider browser support.) I can see the benefits of this in the sense that it's effectively a RESTful API, but at a slightly increased development cost. In my previous projects, I've POST'd everything: Is it worth switching to a RESTful mindset simply for the sake of best practice?
