• Google analytics tracking example.com and www.example.com

  Our website is set up to direct all traffic for www.example.com to example.com with a line in the htaccess file. With google analytics new in page analytics feature we are thinking of removing the line and allowing people to visit www.example.com as well to play with the new features. My question is this. How will this change affect our analytics data. -will nothing change and we can start using the new feature with our existing data -Are the two domains tracked separately and we will have to start over with www.example .com Any help would be great, as I can find nothing on googles help site covering this. Let me know if you need further explanation.

• AutoSSH for a robust tunnel

  I'm trying to start an ssh tunnel from A to B and have it run despite things like: period network/wifi drops on A and remote server reboot on B. My ssh tunnel starts using upstart script on A with event start on (net-device-up IFACE=eth0) I've found autossh which is supposed to handle these kinds of things, but had some trouble getting it to work. The upstart executes: autossh -M 0 -2qTN -o "ServerAliveInterval 30" -o "ServerAliveCountMax 2" -L 5678:somehost:5678 user@B However when I log into B and kill -9 that tunnel session, autossh just exits with "Connection to B closed by remote host." That's not what I expected autossh to do. Any advice on how to set this up? Any GUI service monitoring utilities out there that essentially display a green light if a service is up? Thanks.

  I'm running ubuntu 11.10 (oneiric) on this machine, and suddenly, apt is unable to update properly. Also it looks pretty much like, say, the us mirror. But oddly enough, the IP it lists, seems to point to a debian package server, which obviously does not contain ubuntu packages. So, is this a local problem that I can fix somehow (and if so, how?) or is there actually some server down right now?

• Multithreading: Communication from Parent thread to child thread

  I have a List of threads normally 3 threads each of the threads reference a webbrowser control that communicates with the parent control to populate a datagridview. What I need to do is when the user clicks the button in a datagridviewButtonCell corresponding data will be sent back to the webbrowser control within the child thread that originally communicated with the main thread. but when I try to do this I receive the following error message 'COM object that has been separated from its underlying RCW cannot be used.' my problem is that I can not figure out how to reference the relevant webbrowser control. I would appreciate any help that anyone can give me. • Ubuntu and mysql server. Something isnt allowing me to connect

  I have a question about mysql settings http://serverfault.com/questions/94054/remote-connections-and-mysql-on-ubuntu/94088#94088 now i want to figure out why i cannot connect. I made sure bind-address was commented out. I can ping the server within the VM but i cannot ping it from within the VM using mysqladmin --protocol=tcp --host=self_ip ping. I also followed along and check if my ports were open and they look like they are. I setup samba on that VM and can access that with no problem as well. It looks like ubuntu does not have a firewall either (i figured this out before) so i am stumped why the server isnt allowing my connection. Apparently the config file works on another person side http://www.pastie.org/742545 I am using Ubuntu 6.06 LTS just because of 'support' reasons. So hopefully this will be 'easy'?

• Sort algorithms that work on large amount of data

  I am looking for sorting algorithms that can work on a large amount of data, i.e. that can work even when the whole data set cannot be held in main memory at once. The only candidate that I have found up to now is merge sort: you can implement the algorithm in such a way that it scans your data set at each merge without holding all the data in main memory at once. The variation of merge sort I have in mind is described in this article in section Use with tape drives. I think this is a good solution (with complexity O(n x log(n)) but I am curious to know if there are other (possibly faster) sorting algorithms that can work on large data sets that do not fit in main memory. EDIT Here are some more details, as required by the answers: The data needs to be sorted periodically, e.g. once in a month. I do not need to insert a few records and have the data sorted incrementally. My example text file is about 1 GB UTF-8 text, but I wanted to solve the problem in general, even if the file were, say, 20 GB. It is not in a database and, due to other constraints, it cannot be. The data is dumped by others as a text file, I have my own code to read this text file. The format of the data is a text file: new line characters are record separators. One possible improvement I had in mind was to split the file into files that are small enough to be sorted in memory, and finally merge all these files using the algorithm I have described above.

• Virtual Lab part 2&ndash;Templates, Patterns, Baselines

  Once you have a good virtualization platform chosen, whether it is a desktop, server or laptop environment, the temptation is to build “X”.  “X” may be a SharePoint lab, a Virtual Cluster, an AD test environment or some other cool project that you really need RIGHT NOW.  That would be doing it wrong. My grandfather taught woodworking and cabinetmaking for twenty-seven years at a trade school in Alabama.  He was the first instructor hired at that school and the only teacher for the first two years.  His students built tables, chairs, and workbenches so the school could start its HVAC courses.   Visiting as a child, I also noticed many extra “helper” stands, benches, holders, and gadgets all built from wood.  What does that have to do with a virtual lab, you ask?  Well, that is the same approach you should take.  Build stuff that you will use.  Not for solving a particular problem, but to let the Virtual Lab be part of your normal troubleshooting toolkit. Start with basic copies of various Operating Systems.  Load and patch server and desktop OS environments.  This also helps build your collection of ISO files, another essential element of a virtual Lab.  Once you have these “baseline” images, you can use your Virtualization software’s snapshot capability to freeze the image.  Clone the snapshot and you have a brand new fully patched machine in mere moments.  You may have to sysprep some of the Microsoft OS environments if you are going to create a domain environment or experiment with clustering.  That is still much faster than loading and patching from scratch. So once you have a stock of raw materials (baseline images in this case) where should you start.  Again, my grandfather’s workshop gives us the answer.  In the shop it was workbenches and tables to hold large workpieces that made the equipment more useful.  In a Windows environment the same role falls to the fundamental network services:  DHCP, DNS, Active Directory, Routing, File Services, and Storage services.  Plan your internal network setup.  Build out an AD controller with all the features listed.  Make the actual domain an isolated domain so it will not care about where you take it.  Add the Microsoft iSCSI target.  Once you have this single system, you can leverage it for almost any network environment beyond a simple stand-alone system. Having these templates and fundamental infrastructure elements ready to run means I can build a quick lab in minutes instead of hours.  My solutions are well-tested, my processes fully documented with screenshots, and my plans validated well before I have to make any changes to client systems.  the work I put in is easily returned in increased value and client satisfaction.

• How do I compile mercurial 1.5.2 on debian?

  I downloaded the files for Mercurial 1.5.2 from http://packages.debian.org/sid/mercurial (mercurial_1.5.2-1.debian.tar.gz, mercurial_1.5.2-1.dsc and mercurial_1.5.2.orig.tar.gz). How do I get a .deb package out of these? I tried to follow the instructions at http://www.debian.org/doc/maint-guide/ch-build.en.html but they don't work. I tried to unpack the two archives and run dpkg-buildpackage or debian/rules build but that fails with: dh --with quilt clean dh_testdir debian/rules override_dh_auto_clean make[1]: Entering directory `/home/user/packages/mercurial-deb' cp -a mercurial/__version__.py mercurial/__version__.py.save cp: cannot stat `mercurial/__version__.py': No such file or directory make[1]: *** [override_dh_auto_clean] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/user/packages/mercurial-deb' make: *** [clean] Error 2 That's because the directory mercurial is inside mercurial_1.5.2/. Why doesn't the build script cd into the right place? • Restoring from .wim image without access to Windows DVD

  I'm attempting to fix a friend's computer. It will not boot to anything Windows-related (see my earlier question for more information). I was able to boot into Peppermint OS to back up her files and grab the HP OEM image (.wim) so that I can restore from it (OEM W7 key, so I can't just do a W7 reinstall). However, I cannot figure out what the heck I need to do to be able to actually restore her computer to that image. I tried using these instructions on TechNet to create a WinPE flash drive, but those instructions don't actually make the flash drive bootable, so that option didn't work (the partition is labeled as active, but when trying to boot from it I get the message "Remove disks or other media. Press any key to restart."). All of the other instructions that I found require that I get into WinRE or boot from an install disk, which I cannot do. Any suggestions as to how I can apply this .wim boot image?

• What ports do I need open for IMAP connections

  I'm developing a web application that connects to an IMAP mailbox and fetches emails as part of it's functionality. However now that I've put the app on my web hosts server I'm getting the following error: Cannot connect to Gmail: Can't connect to gmail-imap.l.google.com,993: Connection timed out After checking with my hosting provider they told me outgoing connections on port 993 are blocked. Is there anyway around this? Otherwise I need to upgrade to a dedicated server :S

• HP UX can not boot from Ignite Tape

  We have hp rp2470 server running hp-ux 11.00, with LVM mirroring. As for redundancy we have second rp2470 same hw (same two processors, same ram, same two hdd’s, same number of lan cards). I want to clone first one to the second. For that purpose I am making ignite tape with the following command: make_tape_recovery -x inc_entire=vg00 Ignite tape finishes without problems. When I boot second server from this ignate tape, server is starting to boot, and ignite restore finishes without any errors, only few notes, which are normal. However vmunix is not booting and when restore finishes, it boot to ISL prompt. From this I cannot boot /stand/vmunix. I tried to run recovery shell but no success. When recovery shell ask to do frecover to restore critical files, then I receive error: frecover(5405): unable to open /dev/rmt/0m At first I thought that the problem might be in the difference of the firmware version of the servers: fw version of production server is: Firmware Version 43.50 and fw version of backup server is: Firmware Version 42.19 So i did a fw upgrade of my backup server so that both servers are v43.50, and tried a recovery but again cant boot the system. Next I did another archive tape with -I (Interactive) flag: make_tape_recovery -I -x inc_entire=vg00 and tried recovery with it, again no good. I cannot find any error or warnings on ignite log, and I cannot boot hpux. I am only on ISL prompt.   One of the major benefits of the latest version of the Oracle SOA products, SOA Suite 11gR1 PS2 (11.1.1.3) and Oracle Service Bus 11gR1 (11.1.1.3), is that both products depend on the same version of WebLogic Server 11g (10.3.3) and so can be installed in the same domain. If you are a developer building artifacts for both but with a laptop/desktop with limited resources then this is particularly useful, as you can install a single server domain (by default you get a domain with an admin server and multiple managed servers) which incorporates both sets of functionality. The viewlet below shows you how to go about creating such a single server domain, using the configuration wizard. Just click the Play button from the viewlet menu to start it. • SSL FTP fails on Windows 7 but not Windows XP clients

  We currently use a free SSL-FTP client called Move-It-Freely to transmit data from a custom data entry program at over forty facilities scattered around the state to our central server. Under XP, it works flawlessly. Some facilities have upgraded to Windows 7. On these machines, uploads (transfers to us) work, downloads (transfers from us to them) fail. Replacing the Windows 7 machine with an XP machine solves the problem. We have also verified that the network firewall settings have not changed. This problem persists even if Windows firewall is not running. We were able to remote into one of the Windows 7 machines to verify that the Windows firewall was indeed turned off. We cannot replicate the problem on our own Windows 7 machines, and are at a loss of how to fix this feature for our customers. The data contain health-related information, and needs to be encrypted (hence SSL-FTP.) Despite hours spent on Google, we cannot find a solution.

• How to restart RoR services after server has been rebooted

  Update I have been searching around to see what services would possibly need to be restarted in my project after reboot. One of them was thinking sphinx, which I finally got to the point where it logs: [Fri Nov 16 19:34:29.820 2012] [29623] accepting connections But I still cant run searchd or searchd --stop because there was no generated sphinx.conf file in the etc/sphinxsearch for more info refer to this open thread on thinking_sphinx after reboot I then turned to looking into restarting unicorn or thin based on some insight I got. The issue is when I check my gems I see one for thin AND unicorn. But when I try to start either one of them they have no file residing in etc/init.d/ where the nginx and sphinxsearch files reside... Would rebooting totally erase the files for an app server like thin or unicorn? We are hosted on Rackspace running ruby 1.9.2p290 rails (3.2.8, 3.2.7, 3.2.0) nginx/1.1.19 notice that there are gems for unicorn and thin but there is no unicorn.rb or thin.rb in my config folder for my app... I am still super lost if any one can give me some insight on some steps to take to figure this out I would really appreciate it. I made some modifications to a constants file in the config folder (changing some values for arrays that populated some drop down fields), but the app had to be rebooted before those changes would be recognized. The hosting is through Rackspace, we rebooted through the option on their site. I contacted them and checked the status of our server, the port is open and operational. The problem is the app is not running when you go to the address for the site. Then when I put in the ip address of the server it just says "Welcome to Nginx". But in a log files I see: [Thu Nov 15 02:34:37.945 2012] [15916] caught SIGTERM, shutting down [Thu Nov 15 02:34:37.996 2012] [15916] shutdown complete I am not very versed in server side set up. I have also never worked on a Rails project that had to have specific services started before the application will start. Any insight as to how to figure out what services need to be restarted and how to go about restarting them would be greatly appreciated. I feel kind of dead in the water at this point... • How can I prevent or diminish Nautilus freezing problems?

  Hi, After upgrading the Ubuntu to 10.04 my Nautilus file manager gives lot of problem. Nautilus freezes after few minutes of start. I tried with Thunar, but I did not like that. Now I have Dolphin too, when Nautilus goes problem, then I start work with Dolphin. I do not like this. I want to work on Nautilus or equivalent one. I work with lot of images using GIMP and Inkscape. I tried many things including reinstalled the OS for 6 time in 4 months. I cannot leave Ubuntu, but I am limbing. Some body help me to fix it. • SBS 2011 on different subnet than domain computers

  The setup is as follows: SBS 2011 in datacentre on subnet A Domain PCs at another location on subnet B There is a site-to-site VPN. The domain PCs have joined the domain and have the SBS as their primary DNS server. The domain PCs can ping the DC but the problem is that the DC cannot ping any of the remote subnet (subnet B) SBS --Switch -- Router A ------------------- Router B -- Switch -- Domain PCs What is strange is that router A can ping any host on the subnet B. Another host on Subnet A can also ping any host on subnet B. It's only the DC which cannot ping anything to that specific remote subnet B. I did a tracert from the SBS to router B. The packet reaches Router A from the SBS but then it fails. Am I missing some specific settings that needs to be done when SBS is on a different subnet than its member pcs ?

• Music player that remembers last song and playlist

  I am looking for something similar to winamp. I have seen other threads but I have tried some solutions and they did not work. I tried Banshee that comes with Ubuntu 11.10 but it does not open last song. I tried Rhythmbox with the remember last song plugin however it does not remember the playlist I got the song from so it would start shuffling all my music. I tried Amarok and it does the same thing as Banshee except cannot even play my playlist and starts playing all my music. I tried audacious but importing my playlist .m3u doesnt allow me to select the individual playlists and play them. I just moved from Windows using winamp and would like a music player that can open playlists .m3u and when I open the application later that it opens the last song and playlist and I can press the play hotkey and music will start playing on startup similar to winamp. I do not care about any additional functionality or user interface.
