  • Domain registration and DNS, what am I actually paying for? [on hold]

    Long story short I'm quite confused as to exactly what is offered by domain registration and dns service sites. When I go to the url "http://google.com", my PC connects to a name server and gets the IP for "google.com", then connects to the IP and says, give me the page for "http://google.com". AFAIK there are many name servers and they all cache these bits of information in some hierarchical network, but ultimately a DNS record must come from a single source (not sure what this is called). There are different kinds of records, that might not an IP but an alias/redirect to other records for example. Lets say I want my own domain name for some server. Maybe it even has a static IP but I want a nicer thing for people to remember, or my ISP assigns dynamic IPs and I want a URL that always works, or my website is hosted on a shared machine so the browser needs to send "http://mydnsname.com" to the webserver to distinguish it from other requests to the same IP but for different sites. Registering a domain costs a small amount of money per year. Where does this money go, not that I'm complaining :P? Is that really all it costs to maintain the entire DNS system of nameservers? If I just register the domain and nothing else, what do I get? Is that just reserving a name or hosting WHOIS information or have I paid for a dns recrord to be hosted? Can a domain alone have a record, such as an IP or be an alias to another? A bunch of sites out there offer other services, in addition to domain registration (I'm assuming they register the domain through another party for me). One example is "dynamic DNS" (DDNS), but isn't this just a regular DNS record that's updated regularly? Does it cost extra to update more often? Without a DDNS, can a DNS record still point to an IP? I've also seen the term "managed DNS" and have no idea where that fits in.

  • How to call Office365 web service in a Console application using WCF

    In my previous post, I showed you how to call the SharePoint web service using a console application. In this post, I’d like to show you how to call the same web service in the cloud, aka Office365.In office365, it uses claims authentication as opposed to windows authentication for normal in-house SharePoint Deployment. For Details of the explanation you can see Wictor’s post on this here. The key to make it work is to understand when you authenticate from Office365, you get your authentication token. You then need to pass this token to your HTTP request as cookie to make the web service call.     Does LearnDevNow offers a useful subscription for .NET video and text reference training material or to learn .NET? I could not find a review of www.learnnowonline.com/learndevnow I've been doing research about places that offer .NET / ASP.NET / C# / LINQ / SQL / JQuery video training that provide excellent material for developers. Kind of like a Lynda.com for back end development. However, I have not find one place that offers quality material that is easily accessible for the user, and that is priced competitive. This is what I'm looking for: Online Video tutorials with free future updates (videos that can be accessed on any device ie: android portable devices, mac / ipad, linux machines) Printable courseware (ie PDFs so that you can take notes, print if necessary, and read in a tablet in case you don;t have internet access) labs, and easy to access code Pre/Post Assessments/Exams for each training to keep track of your progress and what you have learned/skills. (Appdev used to offer this but it was way too expensive (thousands for each training ie 1k for each. I paid about five thousand at Appdev, and now I regret that purchase), and after a few years/months the training became obsolete - outdated) I looked at learnnowonline.com/learndevnow but it seems that their courseware / text reference material can only be accessed online, and don't know if their videos work in all mobile devices, and browsers (Safari, Chrome, IE, Opera, Firefox) Also, it seems Appdev not longer exist and now is called " AppDev is now LearnNowPlus : www.learnnowonline.com/appdev That site not longer offers prices. I tried to find reviews but could not find any. Does anyone know, or can share a review about some of these type of online training service providers? I would appreciate your feedback on this, and if you can share your past experiences with their service or similar/better services that would even be better. Thanks.

  • SQL – NuoDB and Third Party Explorer – SQuirreL SQL Client, SQL Workbench/J and DbVisualizer

    I recently wrote a four-part series on how I started to learn about and begin my journey with NuoDB. Big Data is indeed a big world and the learning of the Big Data is like spaghetti – no one knows in reality where to start, so I decided to learn it with the help of NuoDB. Part 1 – Install NuoDB in 90 Seconds Part 2 – Manage NuoDB Installation Part 3 – Explore NuoDB Database Part 4 – Migrate from SQL Server to NuoDB …and in this blog post we will try to answer the most asked question about NuoDB. “I like the NuoDB Explorer but can I connect to NuoDB from my preferred Graphical User Interface?” Honestly, I did not expect this question to be asked of me so many times but from the question it is clear that we developers absolutely want to learn new things and along with that we do want to continue to use our most efficient developer tools. Now here is the answer to the question: “Absolutely, you can continue to use any of the following most popular SQL clients.” NuoDB supports the three most popular 3rd-party SQL clients. In all the leading development environments there are always more than one database installed and managing each of them with a different tool is often a very difficult task. Developers like to use one tool, which can control most of the databases. Once developers are familiar with one database tool it is very difficult for them to switch to another tool. This is particularly difficult when we developers find that tool to be the key reason for our efficiency. Let us see how to install each of the NuoDB supported 3rd party tools along with a quick tutorial on how to go about using them. SQuirreL SQL Client First download SQuirreL Universal SQL client. On the Windows platform you can double-click on the file and it will install the SQuirrel client. Once it is installed, open the application and it will bring up the following screen. Now go to the Drivers tab on the left side and scroll it down. You will find NuoDB mentioned there. Now right click over it and click on Modify Driver. Now here is where you need to make sure that you make proper entries or your client will not work with the database. Enter following values: Name: NuoDB Example URL: jdbc:com:nuodb://localhost:48004/test Website URL: http://www.nuodb.com Now click on the Extra Class Path tab and Add the location of the nuodbjdbc.jar file. If you are following my blog posts and have installed NuoDB in the default location, you will find the default path as C:\Program Files\NuoDB\jar\nuodbjdbc.jar. The class name of the driver is automatically populated. Once you click OK you will see that there is a small icon displayed to the left of NuoDB, which shows that you have successfully configured and installed the NuoDB driver. Now click on the tab of Alias tab and you can notice that it is empty. Now click on the big Plus icon and it will open screen of adding an alias. “Alias” means nothing more than adding a database to your system. The database name of the original installation can be anything and, if you wish, you can register the database with any other alternative name. Here are the details you should fill into the Alias screen below. Name: Test (or your preferred alias) Driver: NuoDB URL: jdbc:com:nuodb://localhost:48004/test (This is for test database) User Name: dba (This is the username which I entered for test Database) Password: goalie (This is the password which I entered for test Database) Check Auto Logon and Connect at Startup and click on OK. That’s it! You are done. On the right side you will see a table name and on the left side you will see various tabs with all the relevant details from respective table. You can see various metadata, schemas, data types and other information in the table. In addition, you can also generate script and do various important tasks related to database. You can see how easy it is to configure NuoDB with the SQuirreL Client and get going with it immediately. SQL Workbench/J This is another wonderful client tool, which works very well with NuoDB. The best part is that in the Driver dropdown you will see NuoDB being mentioned there. Click here to download  SQL Workbench/J Universal SQL client. The download process is straight forward and the installation is a very easy process for SQL Workbench/J. As soon as you open the client, you will notice on following screen the NuoDB driver when selecting a New Connection Profile. Select NuoDB from the drop down and click on OK. In the driver information, enter following details: Driver: NuoDB (com.nuodb.jdbc.Driver) URL: jdbc:com.nuodb://localhost/test Username: dba Password: goalie While clicking on OK, it will bring up the following pop-up. Click Yes to edit the driver information. Click on OK and it will bring you to following screen. This is the screen where you can perform various tasks. You can write any SQL query you want and it will instantly show you the results. Now click on the database icon, which you see right on the left side of the word User=dba.  Once you click on Database Explorer, you can perform various database related tasks. As a developer, one of my favorite tasks is to look at the source of the table as it gives me a proper view of the structure of the database. I find SQL Workbench/J very efficient in doing the same. DbVisualizer DBVisualizer is another great tool, which helps you to connect to NuoDB and retrieve database information in your desired format. A developer who is familiar with DBVisualizer will find this client to be very easy to work with. The installation of the DBVisualizer is very pretty straight forward. When we open the client, it will bring us to the following screen. As a first step we need to set up the driver. Go to Tools >> Driver Manager. It will bring up following screen where we set up the diver. Click on Create Driver and it will open up the driver settings on the right side. On the right side of the area where it displays Driver Settings please enter the following values- Name: NuoDB URL Format: jdbc:com.nuodb://localhost:48004/test Now under the driver path, click on the folder icon and it will ask for the location of the jar file. Provide the path as a C:\Program Files\NuoDB\jar\nuodbjdbc.jar and click OK. You will notice there is a green button displayed at the bottom right corner. This means the driver is configured properly. Once driver is configured properly, we can go to Create Database Connection and create a database. If the pop up show up for the Wizard. Click on No Wizard and continue to enter the settings manually. Here is the Database Connection screen. This screen can be bit tricky. Here are the settings you need to remember to enter. Name: NuoDB Database Type: Generic Driver: NuoDB Database URL: jdbc:com.nuodb://localhost:48004/test Database Userid: dba Database Password: goalie Once you enter the values, click on Connect. Once Connect is pressed, it will change the button value to Reconnect if the connection is successfully established and it will show the connection details on lthe eft side. When we further explore the NuoDB, we can see various tables created in our test application. We can further click on the right side screen and see various details on the table. If you click on the Data Tab, it will display the entire data of the table. The Tools menu also has some very interesting and cool features like Driver Manager, Data Monitor and SQL History. Summary Well, this was a relatively long post but I find it is extremely essential to cover all the three important clients, which we developers use in our daily database development.   • How to call Office365 web service in a Console application using WCF

In this post, I’d like to show you how to call the same web service in the cloud, aka Office365.In office365, it uses claims authentication as opposed to windows authentication for normal in-house SharePoint Deployment. For Details of the explanation you can see Wictor’s post on this here. The key to make it work is to understand when you authenticate from Office365, you get your authentication token. You then need to pass this token to your HTTP request as cookie to make the web service call.   • How to install mod_ssl for Apache

    Ok So I installed Apache httpd a while ago and have recently come back to it to try setup SSL and get it serving several different tomcat servers. At the moment I have two completely separate tomcat instances serving up to slightly different versions (one for dev and one for demo say) my web app to two different ports; mydomain.com:8081 and mydomain.com:8082 I've successfully (back in Jan) used mod_jk to get httpd to serve those same tomcat instances to http://www.mydomain.com:8090/dev and http://www.mydomain.com:8090/demo (8090 cos I've got another app running on 8080 via Jetty at this stage) using the following code in httpd.conf; LoadModule jk_module modules/mod_jk.so JkWorkersFile conf/workers.properties JkLogFile logs/mod_jk.log JkLogLevel debug <VirtualHost *:8090> JkMount /devd* tomcatDev JkMount /demo* tomcatDemo </VirtualHost> What I'm not trying to do is enable SSL I've added the following to httpd.conf Listen 443 <VirtualHost _default_:443> JkMount /dev* tomcatDev JkMount /demo* tomcatDemo SSLEngine on SSLCertificateFile "/opt/httpd/conf/localhost.crt" SSLCertificateKeyFile "/opt/httpd/conf/keystore.key" </VirtualHost> But when I try to restart Apache with "apachectl restart" (yes after shutting down that other app I mentioned so it doesn't toy with https connections) I continuously get the error; "Invalid command 'SSLEngine', perhaps misspelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration. httpd not running, trying to start" I've looked in the httpd/modules dir and indeed there is no mod_ssl, only mod_jk.so and httpd.exp. I've tried using yum to install mod_ssl, it says its already installed. Indeed I can locate mod_ssl.so in /usr/lib/httpd/modules but this is NOT the path to where I've installed httpd which is /opt/httpd and in fact /usr/lib/httpd contains nothing but the modules dir. Can anyone tell me how to install mod_ssl properly for my installed location of httpd so I can get past this error:

  • Twitter status id conundrum

    I have an interest, a slightly perverse one some might say, in using online services and trying to figure out what the underlying (logical) data model is and in this day and age Twitter is one that lends itself very well to scrutiny. Consider this recent tweet of mine: The URL that enables you to see that tweet is http://twitter.com/jamiet/status/12154647354. We can interpret that URL to mean "a tweet by jamiet with an id of 12154647354" and hence we might further assume that the unique identifier for the tweet is {jamiet,12154647354}. However, its well-known that Twitter gives each status a unique ID regardless of who tweeted it so we might expect we could reach that tweet just by using a URL of http://twitter.com/status/12154647354 however (at the time of writing) that only redirects to Twitter's homepage. That seems strange to me especially given that we can use Twitter's API to access information about that tweet using only the id of the status. Witness http://api.twitter.com/1/statuses/show/12154647354.xml: [We can also access a JSON version of that information using http://api.twitter.com/1/statuses/show/12154647354.json] I'm puzzled as to why a tweet can't be accessed using on the main twitter website using the id alone.   • Trying to configure DNS on a Godaddy Virtual Dedicated host, Mediatemple Domain Registration

    A client of mine purchased VD hosting with Godaddy and a domain name with Mediatemple. I've never configured DNS from scratch, and I'm finding it very difficult to find any sort of explanation on how to go about it. As of right now, Mediatemple is pointing to the Godaddy's ns1.domaincontrol.com and ns2.domaincontrol.com nameservers. The VD hosting on Godaddy (via their Simple Control Panel) has options to "Add a new domain", which brings you through a wizard of sorts that asks you if the domain has already been registered (yes), what it is (dclowd9901.com for this example), create a system username and password for it (with checkboxes for SSH and FTP access), which level of user can administer it, and whether a mail account should be setup. When complete, it also creates a zone file. In this zone file, the Primary nameserver is ns1.dclowd9901.com; the records are as follow (where 12.23.12.34 is the presumed host): @ A 12.23.12.34 @ NS ns1 @ NS ns2 ns1 A 12.23.12.34 ns2 A 12.23.12.34 @ MX mail www A 12.23.12.34 ftp A 12.23.12.34 ssh A 12.23.12.34 mail A 12.23.12.34 If anyone can shed any light on this for me, explain to me the interactions between the registrar and the host and so on, I'd be very grateful.   • Bingbot seems to be adding "ForceRecrawl: 0" to URLs when crawling my sites

    I'm seeing this in the iis-logs of two websites that I maintain: GET /an/existing/page/on/my/site+ForceRecrawl:+0 - 80 - 207.46.195.105 HTTP/1.1 Mozilla/5.0+(compatible;+bingbot/2.0;++http://www.bing.com/bingbot.htm) I get about one or two of these per day from these IP addresses: 207.46.195.105, 65.52.110.190.. an more, all belonging to msnbot-ip.search.msn.com Probably Microsoft has a bug in their crawler? Any way, doing a search on "ForceRecrawl: 0" in major search engines comes up with a bunch of random sites. Doing the search on StackOverflow or here gave no results (to my amazement). Am I the only one seeing this? I first noticed these on the 9th of this month, and I'm seeing them pass almost daily since... Another thing that I think is crazy, is that the URL http://www.bing.com/bingbot.htm redirects to mail.live.com (hotmail). Currently I'm returning 404's but I'm considering to catch these, strip the trailing " ForceRecrawl: 0" and process as if it were a legitimate url. Could anyone shed some light on this? Could it have to do with some configuration or so in Bing's Webmaster Tools?

    I'm trying to get my java program to talk to a MySQL DB. So i did some reading and downloaded MySQL Connector/J. I've extracted it into my home directory ~.   • Permission issues causes Unity Segmentation fault

    I upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10 and I can boot to the unity-greeter and login just fine, but after login I just get a black screen with a cursor. I have tried following http://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI http://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver and the manual install of the downloaded AMD drivers. All have the same affect. Also I have read Black screen after login with cursor I get a black screen after logging in ubuntu 13.04 black screen after login Ubuntu 13.10 - Black screen after login session Ubuntu 13.04 - Black screen with unresponsive cursor Upgrade to Ubuntu 13.04 Problem - Boots into Blank Black Screen All of which were no further help then the two support articles about ATI drivers So I switched back to the default drivers and went a little further into debugging, when I do ctrl+alt+F1 and login and try unity --debug > unity_start.log then ctrl+alt+F8 the screen stays black with a cursor and when I switch back ctrl+alt+F1 the contents of the log output are http://pastebin.com/rdQG4Hb0 However when I try sudo unity --debug > unity_start_root.log then ctrl+alt+F8, unity starts and the output of the log is http://pastebin.com/Yv4RD2j7 The fact that it starts as root tells be it is either a permissions issue of some required file or there is some setting that is specific to my user that is causing the SIGSEGV. So to narrow this down I activated the guest account and tried to login and got the same black screens with only a mouse cursor, so this tells me that it is not a configuration issue, but a permissions issue, so how do I narrow down which file has the wrong permissions? Also is there anything further that may help debug this issue? Ok after a few more hours of googling I found that if I add myself to the video group I can login and see the desktop, but there are lots of other permission related issues, so I am thinking something went wonky with PolicyKit during the upgrade, is there a way to reset PolicyKit settings for a user?

  • How do I pin a particular MySQL version to avoid unnecessary upgrades?

    I'm running a MySQL server, and want to keep it up to date with regular apt-upgrades. I don't want this to cause MySQL to upgrade unless I'm doing it during scheduled downtime! How do I alter my apt-preferences so that this won't happen?     Logparser in powershell One of the few examples how to use logparser in powershell is from the Microsoft.com Operations blog.     We’re expanding! I’m thrilled to announce that Microsoft Gold Partner LobsterPot Solutions has started another branch appointing the amazing Ted Krueger (5-time SQL MVP awardee) as the US lead. Ted is well-known in the SQL Server world, having written books on indexing, consulting and on being a DBA (not to mention contributing chapters to both MVP Deep Dives books). He is an expert on replication and high availability, and strong in the Business Intelligence space – vast experience which is both broad and deep. Ted is based in the south east corner of Wisconsin, just north of Chicago. He has been a consultant for eons and has helped many clients with their projects and problems, taking the role as both technical lead and consulting lead. He is also tireless in supporting and developing the SQL Server community, presenting at conferences across America, and helping people through his blog, Twitter and more. Despite all this – it’s neither his technical excellence with SQL Server nor his consulting skill that made me want him to lead LobsterPot’s US venture. I wanted Ted because of his values. In the time I’ve known Ted, I’ve found his integrity to be excellent, and found him to be morally beyond reproach. This is the biggest priority I have when finding people to represent the LobsterPot brand. I have no qualms in recommending Ted’s character or work ethic. It’s not just my thoughts on him – all my trusted friends that know Ted agree about this.   • Introducing the Oracle Parcel Service&ndash;Example/Reference Application

    Over the last few weeks the product management team has been working on a webcast series that is airing in EMEA.  It is a 5-episode series where we talk about different features of WebLogic and show how to build applications that take advantage of these features.  Each session is focused at a different layer of the technology stack, and you can find the schedule below. The application we are building in this series is named the ‘Oracle Parcel Service’.  It is an example application and not a product of Oracle by any stretch of the imagination.  Over the next few weeks we will be finalizing the code and will be releasing it for you to check out.  For updates, request membership to the Oracle Parcel Service project on SampleCode.oracle.com: https://www.samplecode.oracle.com/sf/projects/oracle-parcel-svc/.
