• Debugging ASP.NET on a built-in web server suddenly stops

  I have Windows Server 2008 (64-bit), VS 2008 with its built-in webserver and an ASP.NET MVC 1.0 webapp. All I'm trying to do is to debug said app. I have a bunch of breakpoints, but they behave in a very strange way. When I fist start a debugging session with F5 and hit a breakpoint, the debugger stops just fine. However, after serveral F10s/F11s debugging suddenly "stops" (no exceptions at that time), but neither VS detaches from browsers' process, nor webapp execution stops: Visual Studio stays attached, and web request continues executing as usual. I tried various browsers (Chrome, Firefox, IE), but to no avail. What do I do to solve this? It really drives me insane.

  Hi All, I am using asp.net 3.5 and C#. I have a blog site and I want that whenever user enter any comment, the suscriber related to that post will get the notification. So what I am doing that I am sending mail at the same time as the comment is inserted into the table, which sometimes take time because of the quantity of user. Is their any way that user enter the comment into the database and the send mail function will run asynchornysly which will not interfear user to go ahead with his task. please let me know how to acheieve it in a simplier way. • How to name an event handler of a private variable in Vb.Net following FxCop rules and Vb.Net standa

  Hello, On one side, in Vb.Net when you add an event handler to an object the created method is named: <NameOfTheObject>_<NameOfTheMethod>. As I like to have consistent syntax I always follow this rule when creating event handlers by hand. On the other side when I create private variables I prefix them with m_ as this is a common thing used by the community, in C# people use to put _ at the beginning of a variable but this is no CLS compliant. At the end, when I create event handlers for events raised by private variables I end with Subs like m_myVariable_MyEvent. Code Analysis (Fx Cop) is complainig about this way of naming because the method does not start with uppercase and because the _, so the question is: What naming standards do you follow when creating event handlers by hand that follow the Fxcop rules if any? • Programmatically adding a site to the Allowed Sites of the IE Pop-up Blocker (VB.NET)

  A few more details. I need to programmatically (Winforms, VB.NET) check if a site is in the Allowed Sites list of the IE Pop-Up Blocker (IE 7 and 8 and Windows XP, Vista and 7) and if not, add it. The application is fully trusted and I don't want to disable the Pop-Up blocker entirely. To clarify some things, this is for a web-automation application with several users across 3 countries. I want to avoid receiving tons of emails and explaining each time how to add the website to the Allowed Sites manually. Also, some of the users have Google Toolbar installed, which also has a Popup Blocker creating trouble to my app. Can this also be done programmatically?

• ASP.NET Calendar control: HowTo stop resetting calendar when navigating Back in the browser

  Hi All, I've implemented the ASP.NET Calendar control. I'm using it to show events happening in the area. THE PROBLEM Today is August 18th, so when the calendar loads, August is selected as the current month. If I navigate to say October, and then navigate to another page and then try to go back to the page with the Calendar by clicking the browser Back button, the Calendar resets back to August, instead of remaining at October. Can anyone recommend how I may circumvent this? Thanks!

  I have two .NET libraries: "Foo.Bar" and "Foo.Baz". "Foo.Bar" is self-contained, while "Foo.Baz" references "Foo.Bar". Assuming I do the following: Use ILMerge to merge "Foo.Bar.dll" with "Foo.Baz.dll" into "Foo1.dll". Create a new solution containing the entirity of both "Foo.Bar" and "Foo.Baz" (since I have access to their source code), and compile this into "Foo2.dll". Will there be any differences in the performance of Foo1.dll and Foo2.dll when using their functionality from an external project? If so, how significant is this performance difference, and is it a once-off (on load?) or ongoing difference? Are there any other pros or cons with either approach?

  I have tried to use some of the widgets in JQuery UI on an Asp.Net MVC site without luck. For example the basic datepicker from jQuery UI - functional demos. • ASP.net Literal or Page altering HTML string, causing formatting issues

  We have a service that generates a report (using word templates and a 3rd party library), and then returns a string in HTML. While this HTML isn't great - its formatted correctly in this string. We want this HTML to show up on a page - format intact. What we currently have done is set an ASP.net Literal's text element to this string. While this works, I have noticed that it has reformatted the HTML string slightly. For the most part, it looks like it generated a bunch of new CSS classes, and a new style element in the HTML. This HTML does not exist in the string thats being returned. I could filter all of this back out, but wonder if there is a better way. I assume that the Page itself is altering something. What is the best way to display this raw HTML back to the user? I can't directly use a Response.Write(string), because this page does have a few other controls on it.

• Aop, Unity, Interceptors and ASP.NET MVC Controller Action Methods

  Using log4net we would like to log all calls to our ASP.NET MVC controller action methods. The logs should include information about any parameters that were passed to the controller. Rather than hand-coding this in each action method we hope to use an AoP approach with Interceptors via Unity. We already have this working with some other classes that use interfaces (using the InterfaceInterceptor). However, we're not sure how to proceed with our controllers. Should we re-work them slightly to use an interface, or is there a simpler approach? Edit The VirtualMethodInterceptor seems to be the correct approach, however using this results in the following exception: System.ArgumentNullException: Value cannot be null. • detect page refresh jQuery or C# ASP.Net

  Hello, I was searching for a way of detecting in my C# code if the page had been refreshed (f5). First I don’t know if a jQuery/JavaScript solution would be better than a fully C# ASP.Net. So... the first question would be: What would make you choose one over the other? And the third, and most important part, is if someone would help me with this. Some good tutorial, or article… anything. I tried some solutions out there… but maybe, because of my lack of knowledge they didn’t work. Thanks in advance.

• What libraries are available for manipulating super large images in .Net

  I have some really large files for example 320 MB tif file with 14000 X 9000 pixels. The operations I need to perform are basically scaling the images to get smaller versions of it and breaking the image into tiles. My code works fine with small files and I use the .Net Bitmap objects but I will occasionally get Out of Memory exceptions for larger files. I've tried using the FreeImage libraries FreeImageBitmap but have the same problems. I'm using something like the following to scale the image: using (Graphics g = Graphics.FromImage((Image)result)) { g.DrawImage( source, xOffset, yOffset, source.Width * scale, source.Height * scale ); } Ideally I'd like a third party library to do all the hardwork, but if you have any tips or resources with more information I would appreciate it.

  We're going to use an ORM tool with a .NET desktop application. The tool allows creation of persistent classes. It generates all database tables automatically. In addition to other data, our system needs to store user credentials, and deliver access control. The question is, is there any possibility of access control by means of ORM, without creating the database authentication mechanisms manually? Is there any product on the market which allows this? We thought of limiting the access in the program itself, but users can easily access the database directly, and bypass the program limitations. Thanks.

  Hi, I am trying to setup ASP.Net MVC 2 application on Linux environment. I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 on VirtualBox, then installed Mono 2.8 from sources. After that I have installed nginx and configure it as recommended here. Unfortunately, FastCGI shows me standard error 500 page: No Application Found Unable to find a matching application for request: Host localhost:80 Port 80 Request Path /Default.aspx Physical Path /var/www/mvc/Default.aspx My application is located in /var/www/mvc directory. I've tried to create some stub Default.aspx file and place it in root dir of my application, but it didn't help, same error occured. Thanks.

• .Net C#: support differnt Office versions

  We created an application that uses Office 2007 (Excel 2007) to read in data from an Excel worksheet. However. I noticed that when I want to deploy the application on a system with Office 2003 installed, it crashes because other PIA's (and other dll's) need to be referenced for this version of office. Do I need to compile different versions of my application to be able to support different versions of Office or is there a more ellegant solution for this problem? I use Visual Studio 2010 (C#) and the .Net 4.0 platform. Many thanks Chris

• Simple string encryption in .NET and Javascript

  I'm developing an ASP.NET MVC application in which I want to encrypt a short string on the server, using C#, and send it to the client-side. Then on the client-side it will be decrypted through Javascript code. Any thoughts on how to implement this? Do you know of a simple encryption algorithm (doesn't have to be bullet-proof secure) that can be easily translated from C# to Javascript or vice-versa? NOTE: I could do this entirely in C# and do the decryption through Ajax, but I'd prefer not to do it this way, as I want to reduce website traffic as much as possible.

• Handling ID's with db4o and ASP.NET MVC2

  So, i'm looking at the TekPub sample for ASP.NET MVC2 (http://mvcstarter.codeplex.com/) using DB4o and there are a bunch of templates to create controllers etc, the generated code looks like: public ActionResult Details(int id) { var item = _session.Single<Account>(x=>x.ID == id); return View(item); } Now, my understanding is that using DB4o or a simliar object database that ID's are not required, so how/what exactly do I pass to enable this kind of templated code to function? UPDATE: Both answers were useful, I have modifed the templates to use GUID as the ID. I will add any relevant code/notes here once I see how it works out.

  Hello everybody, I need to implement a plugin architecture within c#/.net in order to load custom user defined actions data type handling code for a custom data grid / conversion / ... from non-static linked assembly files. Because the application has to handle many custom user defined actions, Iam in need for unloading them once executed in order to reduce memory usage. I found several good articles about plugin architectures, eg: ExtensionManager PluginArchitecture ... but none of them gave me enough sausage for properly unloading an assembly. As the program is to be distributed and the user defined actions are (as the name states) user defined: how to i prevent the assembly from executing malicious code (eg. closing my progra, deleting files)? Are there any other pitfalls one of you has encountered?

• ASP.NET/AJAX - Timer delay

  I've got a problem with the timer in asp.net ajax. The timer needs to trigger every second so I put the delay of the timer (don't know the real name atm) at 1000. Now when I put this timer inside an UpdatePanel it doesn't really trigger every second because the timer also gets updated in the UpdatePanel. But when I put the timer outside the update panel it keeps kinda refreshing the page, so whenever I put a button on the same page I need to press and release this button within 1 second else it gets refreshed. Also I saw that even outside of the UpdatePanel the timer isn't a real second. Any solutions?

• My ASP.NET page is making postback on web server and not on local host

  I have created a website in ASP.NET = www.vif-tech.com/BidsOnline When I am running it on Localhost using Visual Studio 2008, its running perfectly without any postback because I am using Ajax Update Panels (where data is changing constantly). But when I am running from my web server i.e. www.vif-tech.com/BidsOnline, its making postbacks every seconds. Even I tried changing connection string on my localhost and tried connecting to main database (not on my localhost), it's still making postbacks. Is there some error in my DB or page ?

  Hi, I am devolping a web application.the problem is that i am using a login control (not a .NET control) which is a part of master page and is acessible from all pages. if user log In from a page the login control updates itself and displlay some statistics of logged In user but the specific page does not reload. (some options on page are visible only to authenticated users, so that after login, page should be reloaded to display such options) after logIn methoed I wrote Reponse.Redirect(Request.Url.AbsoluteUri) after this the browser response the "Page cannot be displayed" It would be of great help to me. • ASP.Net: Scheduled tasks in a shared environment.

  This is really an extension of this question, which asked the best way to schedule tasks which need to be performed periodically within ASP.NET in a normal environment. However, I would like to ask this specifically for a Shared Hosting Environment (most of the answers to the previous question would not work in a shared environment as far as I know). One obvious solution would be to have a page which is responsible to performing the tasks on the hosted machine, and call this page from another machine (that you have full control over) using e.g. a windows scheduled task. This is a bit nasty though - are there any better approaches?

I've used response.redirect("Thankyou.aspx") a lot in the past I've also used something like this for hiding form controls and outputting a message: outResult.Attributes.Remove("style") outResult.Attributes.Add("style", "display:block;") outEntry.Attributes.Remove("style") outEntry.Attributes.Add("style", "display:none;") For the above you have to consider post backs that may occur if the user click refresh though. Does anybody have a better option? thanks!

  Hi, I've just started to play around with MVP in asp.net. One thing I quite cant figure out is how do I pass information, i.e. an integer variable from one view(webform) to another. Let's I have a customerlistView which is mapped to a customerlist.aspx page. From it I select a customer and it's record id. Say I want to display the customer's details in another view (i.e customerDetailView, customerdetail.aspx). How do I achieve that ? Does that mean customerlistView would call the presenter of the customerdetail and cause a page redirect ? Any ideas ? thanks
