b43 Firmware Error when trying to install Ubuuntu 14.04 on XP Laptop

I know I'm an Ubuntu and Linux n00b, but I've been browsing the web for a few days searching for a solution, and none of the other b43 posts etc solve my problem. I am trying to install Ubuntu 14.04 on a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pro laptop(It's quite old yes, has about 30GB Hard Drive and I think 192mb of RAM) which currently has Windows XP installed(which I'd like to keep for the time being). I have downloaded the 32-bit Desktop ISO and used unetbootin to create a Live USB for this laptop. When I boot from USB, I arrive at the unetbootin Grey and Blue menu and pick either "Try Ubuntu without installing", or "Install Ubuntu". The menu goes away and an Ubuntu loadscreen showing UBUNTU and four dots which progressively change between white and orange. At about the second color changing cycle a white underscore symbol appears next to the fourth dot and flickers, and then I get the usual: [ 95.514833] b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43/ucode5.fw" not found [ 95.514847] b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43-open/ucode5.fw" not found [ 95.514855] b43-phy0 ERROR: You must go to http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#devicefirmware and download the correct firmware for this driver version. Please carefully read all the instruction on this website. After this I have to hard reboot or shut-down. I don't have a previous Linux install so cannot do the apt-get from my previous install. I cannot access the boot options menu by using F6 or similar. Any ideas? Thanks beforehand!

WiFi problems on several Ubuntu installations

Okay this is the first time I have ever had to ask a question as usually the Ubuntu community have answered everything already but on this occasion there are many people asking for the answer but not one good solution has become available so far so someone please help or I will have to install Windows on my sons and my girlfriends PCs and that would be a disaster as I am trying to help convince people to move from Windows. I installed 12.04 on three computers on the same day. Dell Inspiron (Works Perfect) Toshiba Satellite Home built Desktop The Dell works perfect but the other two either keep losing connection to the wireless Internet and even when they are connected they stop connecting to web sites, for some reason it searches Google fine but will not connect to web sites when a link is clicked. So far people have recommended in other forums: Removing network manager and installing wicd (didn't solve it) Changing the MTU in the wireless settings (didn't solve it) All sorts of messing about with Firefox settings (this doesn't solve it and even if it did this would leave most average PC users scratching their heads and wishing they had stuck to windows) The problem exists on two very different machines and different wireless cards so I doubt its a driver or hardware issue, also many other Ubuntu users are having the same problem with a vast array of different machines and wireless cards. Can someone please give a good solution to this as its going to turn a lot of people away from Ubuntu if they cannot get this sorted. I would give some PC specs but the two machines are vastly different and the other people complaining of this problem also have very different systems all showing the same problem.

Problem with dual monitor

I have a laptop with a nvidia optimus graka. I'm also useing a 23" external monitor. It never really worked... . After installation (it was a clean installation) the 23" monitor worked as it should, but the LCD from the laptop wasn't at the right resolution. And every time i tried to change this the PC crashed. Today i had a litle bit of time so i decided to solve this problem. I've tried a few things ( e.g. I've installed bumblebee with the nvidia driver and tested it. It's working...) but nothing solved my problem. Instead of getting any closer to the solution, it's gotten even more strange now... . Now, the display setting isn't recognizing a 2nd monitor at all. But I get on the 23" monitor (which is not shown in the display setting) a screen with the same resolution as the one on the laptop. The display settings looks so: Any help would be wonderful.

HDMI & Display Port stopped work on 11.10

After upgraded two laptops to 11.10, HDMI and Display ports stopped to work. Symptoms on each (btw. it used to work with 11.04 on both): laptop Dell Inspiron 1525 (HDMI, Intel GMX 3100): after HDMI cable is plugged in, screen is corrupted (no panel, no icons), system is unresponsive, TV set receives some signal, but only blue screen and some regular ticks can be heard. Unplugging the cable system recovers. No logs were checked. Thinkpad W510 (DisplayPort, NVidia). Simple "Screens" utility does not recognizes TV set, but this is something to do with the differences between Nvidia driver API and the one expected from the utility, as far I could spot on the net. However, using Nvidia-settings, TV is recognized, but cannot be enabled and used. Beside that, touch pad freezes after HDMI2DisplayPort connector is plugged in the laptop (not immediately, but after few seconds - probably after some handshake with the TV set crashes). It is strange that no such bug reports can be found on the net. So, I guess it is something wrong on our laptops only, but would appreciate some hints (i.e. any known changes recently related to HDMI, Display Port, X-Windows, kernel... wherever I should take a look and fix the issue).

Ubuntu 11.10 very slow compared to Windows

I'm new to Ubuntu/linux. Since my PC is very old and not very fast with Windows 7, I decided to give Ubuntu a try, so I downloaded and installed Ubuntu 11.10 today. When I first started it, I had bad 800x600 resolution and it was very slow and annoying. So I installed a driver for my graphic card and now everything looks very nice (1280x1024).But I think it's still far slower than Windows 7. I tried to run in Ubuntu like a few people suggested on the forum but if I log in I get a black screen saying something like "this video mode cannot be displayed". I get that same screen when booting Ubuntu btw, but after about 15 seconds it disappears and just starts Ubuntu. I also installed other drivers for my graphic card but everything stayed the same. I noticed that i.e. when I open Firefox or system settings it takes about 5 seconds till it opens (while Windows 7 takes under 1 second to start i.e. Chrome) and when I do this my CPU usage gets to 100% for a short time. Computer specs: Memory: 2GB RAM Processor: Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce 6800 400MHz. I read on various forums that 11.04 works flawless on many PCs, where 11.10 is very slow. Should I install 11.04 or could anybody help me with this problem?

NetworkManager detects no networks with a RTL8188CE

I'm on a 2011 Lenovo Thinkpad T420i with a Realtek RTL8188CE WiFi adapter. Here's the scenario: I pop in the Ubuntu LiveCD to install. Laptop detects all networks in range, I connect to my home network, internet working great. Once Ubuntu finishes installing, the home network I am connected to is the only one which appears in the applet list. Upon restarting or waking from suspend, NetworkManager does not detect any networks – it simply displays "Disconnected" under the Wireless Network section of the menu. I am able to connect to my home network by using the "Connect to Hidden Wireless Network" option and it works immediately. I have yet to test if this works with other SSIDs. I have tried reinstalling the entire OS as well as NetworkManager and my wireless drivers. Mouse pointer size inconsistent

Since installing Ubuntu 12.04, I've been having a problem with the mouse pointer size. On the desktop, it is quite a bit larger than it should be (24), though the different cursors (editing text, hyperlink hand, etc) are correct. The size changes to the correct size when the pointer is over some application windows (GVim, Netbeans, Firefox), but then changes back once it is moved out of the window. There was a similar question here, but the Xdefaults solution did not work for me, and I didn't want to try the one requiring editing the icon image. In addition, I've tried changing the cursor theme using sudo update-alternatives --config x-cursor-theme as well as using the dconf-editor, but though I can change the theme, the size issue remains. In case it's relevant, I'm running on a dual-screen setup with monitor sizes of 2560x1600 and 1920x1080, using the NVidia video driver. Is there another way to control pointer size, or a setting that might be messing it up? EDIT: These are the values/options I have for update-alternatives and in dconf-editor. How you choose your first job as a programmer? [on hold]

For Brief I am a recently graduated CS student. I am looking for a job these days, but I have no idea what kind of software development jobs I like(embedded system,web development or else...). And I am looking for your advice. Here is a little more While I was a student, I had an one year internship experience as a system engineer in a semi-conductor company where I wrote Linux driver, tuned system performance, etc.. I was happy about this experience as it allowed me to deepen my understanding of the operating system and different low level things. And I thought "Em, I will continue in the embedded area after I graduate". At the end of my study, I am doing an another internship in web development, both front-end and back-end. And I also enjoys a lot the process of learning new things and making it work (Backbone, Node, socketio, etc..). Now, when I am looking for a software development position, I do not know what to apply! All I know is that I want a job which allows me to keep up with the trends instead of repeating. But besides this, I've no idea what specific type of job I want to do. Turn back to embedded system? Continue with web development? Change to other promising areas(data mining)? All these development positions makes no big difference to me. But I think this is not good and I need some criteria at choosing. So I am looking for advice and I would really appreciate if you can share your experience.

List of Asus U46 laptop troubles with Ubuntu 12.04

I've bought my ASUS U46 last february. I would like to make it work better with Ubuntu 12.04. Note taht I was forced to install Ubuntu 12.04 (before its publication) by ethernet. After a successfull install, several problem remain unfixed such as : USB 3 just does not work correctly. Can be fixed, but I didn't succeed yet. Nvidia Optimus (means that you can use Intel Chipset or the Nvidia GeForce) is possible to use thanks to BumbleBee project. It seems to work, though. But Nvidia tools still say they don't see any Nvidia driver installed. Battery duration can be optimised by using Laptop-tools. Any standby state lead to a X server crash. A good CTRL+ALT+F1 login and "shutdown -r" avoids a brutal power off. And since few weeks, I have some bug reports right after boot about "unattended-upgrade", and dpkg troubles after any apt-get install or update (Linux kernel doesn't compile anymore), ... Are there any ways to fix those troubles ? I would need a bit of assistance, in fact. Thank you for you help, Sincerly yours, Thibault

Cannot connect to Internet via Wifi

I have a laptop that's currently configured as a dual-boot. The problem: I cannot connect to the Internet in the home wireless network through Ubuntu in the apartment where I currently live. The strange part: I can connect to it just fine through Windows (as right now), and I can use the Internet through Ubuntu on this computer with all the other wireless networks I have tried. The problem is only with this particular combination. The only possible explanations I can think of are either that this network is WPS, or that it's a driver problem--Vodafone router. The router 'sees' the computer--and it says it's connected; however, I keep getting prompted for a password, and I enter the key that works with Windows, but in Ubuntu it just keeps asking for it repeatedly, and I can't access the Internet. I don't have an ethernet cable at the moment, but if someone would be so kind as to ask me questions I will gladly answer, and if you have suggestions, I will do them--the only thing is, I am subletting this apartment from someone who is away on vacation, so I don't want to screw with the router settings unless I know what I'm doing! - I do not have Wicd - Yes, I have the router's information (key works in Windows) - Feedback of lshw says that the wireless card is Ultimate N Wifi Link 5300, vendor: Intel Corporation, physical id: 0 ,etc. The first two commands I was told to try work OK, but when I typed sudo ifconfig wlan0 essid ..... I got back 'essid: Unknown host' Would my question be better on the Ubuntu forums than here on AU?

No WIFI on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS after today software update

I just got new dell inspiron3537 with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (no windows O/S). It got some wireless (hard block) yesterday. So, this morning, I ran the software update all the security update. After that I can't see "Wireless" in system setting. So, I updated all the software update and looked thru several web site and found "sudo lshw -c network" command. How do I fix the Dash search not being able to find "additional drivers" nor "update"?

I am a fairly new user of Ubuntu, and currently have two 12.04 installations, one of which seems to work ok but I have two problems. The problem I'm asking about in this question, is that the Dash search seems unable to find things, such as "additional drivers" or "update". On my working machine, searching for "additional drivers" there finds an icon for the driver program, but on the problem machine, it gives "Sorry, there is nothing that matches your search." Dash also only shows sections for Recent Files, and Downloads, on that machine. The account I'm running is an admin account. This installation also has a stuck Ubuntu Software Center (it loads and hangs) as in threads like this one. I don't think I've done very much to this computer that could cause a problem. I installed g++ and Wt to do some programming. The biggest change I can remember is uninstalling the newfangled scrollbars with "sudo apt-get remove liboverlay-scrollbar3-0.2-0", but re-installing that module seems to have no effect on these issues. Anyone have any ideas? Both machines have been updated with all recommended updates and say they are up to date.

Upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04 now no network access

A few weeks ago I decided I should enter the Linux world and read that Ubuntu is the most widely used release. I installed version 11.10 and it worked perfectly. Just this past week I decided I would do the upgrade to 12.04. The upgrade process itself worked fine. However, when I logged in I no longer had a network connection. I am running an AMD-based PC with a D-LINK DFE-530TXS network card and as I said, it worked fine in 11.10. I have scoured the Internet and come across a thousand slightly varying solutions, but they are too convoluted for someone new to Linux. Not because I can't follow the steps, but because most of the tools/utilities that are referenced (e.g. to compile, install, etc.) are not available when I use the stated steps in the solutions. So....should I re-install 11.10 or is there hope in getting this version to use the NIC that I know works. I have the latest driver from d-link for my NIC but I have no idea how to 'install' it for Ubuntu 12.04 to use. I know you will require additional information, but I wasn't sure what you would need. Weird internet connection issue on Ubuntu 14.04

I have an old Gateway PC with Windows 7 installed alongside the original (XP, I think?). A while ago my friend walked me through and helped me install Ubuntu 14.04 alongside the others because my Win7 was having issues with the display driver (it would unexpectedly crash while trying to watch videos on YouTube or other places). And I can't update it because the original computer settings are for XP or something, not Win7. :( We recently switched from AT&T U-Verse to Comcast. I would have stayed with Ethernet, but somehow the adapter I have wouldn't connect to Comcast's thing during their installation. So I was given a wireless USB adapter. It worked fine, up until the last few days. It's not a problem on Win7 (using it right now). Connection's strong, things load. On Ubuntu though, it SAYS it connects even before I login to my account, but when I login and bring up Firefox, it will load the homepage, and maybe one or two other pages I venture to before suddenly just... endlessly trying to load the page. I would normally go in and manually select 'disconnect' from the connections options menu to refresh/restart it like I've done a few times already. But lately, it won't respond, and then a little while later an error message comes up saying the request timed out/failed. Restarting my computer doesn't help it. The other weird thing is that I've noticed the signal (when it's actually working properly before the last few days) is comparitively weaker than when I'm on Win7. But my location doesn't change. It's the same computer, same connection.

I have searched blogs and forums, installed several drivers, but can't find a solution that can provide equivalent video quality as that of Windows 7. Kindly help. Enable wireless greyed out. Disabled by hard switch. Details inside

Ok so the basic issue here is this: My wireless has not once enabled through many environments. Wubi install: Enable wireless greyed out Live cd: greyed out Partition alongside win7: greyed out. I installed all software updates, checked additional drivers, installed the latest driver for RTL8111/8168B. rfkill list shows phy0 and phy1. Phy0 has a hardblock on. everything else is unblocked. Now consider this also: I have both a wireless adapter inside my laptop and a wireless usb adapter outside. The internal adapter does not work, hence why I think hardblock is on even if the external slider in 'on'. I have tried commands such as rfkill unblock all as well as sudo rfkill unblock all. No wireless options in the BIOS. I have tried another laptop and desktop and they get wireless from the get go. Ubuntu on my laptop seems to see my belkin adapter as well as my internal (ralink) one. But trying to scan networks yields no results and says network is down always. Ubuntu version: 12.04 lts Ask me anything else you may need to help me, thanks.

Unable to install Xdebug

I've registered xdebug in php.ini (as per http://xdebug.org/docs/install) but it's not showing up when i run "php -m" or when i get a test page to run "phpinfo()". I've just installed the latest version of XAMPP. Can anyone provide any suggestions in getting xdebug to show up? The previous posts were: JMS Step 1 - How to Create a Simple JMS Queue in Weblogic Server 11g JMS Step 2 - Using the QueueSend.java Sample Program to Send a Message to a JMS Queue JMS Step 3 - Using the QueueReceive.java Sample Program to Read a Message from a JMS Queue JMS Step 4 - How to Create an 11g BPEL Process Which Writes a Message Based on an XML Schema to a JMS Queue JMS Step 5 - How to Create an 11g BPEL Process Which Reads a Message Based on an XML Schema from a JMS Queue This example leads you through the creation of an Oracle database Advanced Queue and the related WebLogic server objects in order to use AQ JMS in connection with a SOA composite. If you have not already done so, I recommend you look at the previous posts in this series, as they include steps which this example builds upon. The following examples will demonstrate how to write and read from the queue from a SOA process. 1. Recap and Prerequisites In the previous examples, we created a JMS Queue, a Connection Factory and a Connection Pool in the WebLogic Server Console. Then we wrote and deployed BPEL composites, which enqueued and dequeued a simple XML payload. AQ JMS allows you to interoperate with database Advanced Queueing via JMS in WebLogic server and therefore take advantage of database features, while maintaining compliance with the JMS architecture. AQ JMS uses the WebLogic JMS Foreign Server framework. A full description of this functionality can be found in the following Oracle documentation Oracle® Fusion Middleware Configuring and Managing JMS for Oracle WebLogic Server 11g Release 1 (10.3.6) Part Number E13738-06 7. Interoperating with Oracle AQ JMS http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23943_01/web.1111/e13738/aq_jms.htm#CJACBCEJ For easier reference, this sample will use the same names for the objects as in the above document, except for the name of the database user, as it is possible that this user already exists in your database. We will create the following objects Database Objects Name Type AQJMSUSER Database User MyQueueTable Advanced Queue (AQ) Table UserQueue Advanced Queue WebLogic Server Objects Object Name Type JNDI Name aqjmsuserDataSource Data Source jdbc/aqjmsuserDataSource AqJmsModule JMS System Module AqJmsForeignServer JMS Foreign Server AqJmsForeignServerConnectionFactory JMS Foreign Server Connection Factory AqJmsForeignServerConnectionFactory AqJmsForeignDestination AQ JMS Foreign Destination queue/USERQUEUE eis/aqjms/UserQueue Connection Pool eis/aqjms/UserQueue 2. Create a Database User and Advanced Queue The following steps can be executed in the database client of your choice, e.g. JDeveloper or SQL Developer. The examples below use SQL*Plus. Log in to the database as a DBA user, for example SYSTEM or SYS. Create the AQJMSUSER user and grant privileges to enable the user to create AQ objects. Create Database User and Grant AQ Privileges sqlplus system/password as SYSDBA GRANT connect, resource TO aqjmsuser IDENTIFIED BY aqjmsuser; GRANT aq_user_role TO aqjmsuser; GRANT execute ON sys.dbms_aqadm TO aqjmsuser; GRANT execute ON sys.dbms_aq TO aqjmsuser; GRANT execute ON sys.dbms_aqin TO aqjmsuser; GRANT execute ON sys.dbms_aqjms TO aqjmsuser; Create the Queue Table and Advanced Queue and Start the AQ The following commands are executed as the aqjmsuser database user. Create the Queue Table connect aqjmsuser/aqjmsuser; BEGIN dbms_aqadm.create_queue_table ( queue_table = 'myQueueTable', queue_payload_type = 'sys.aq$_jms_text_message', multiple_consumers = false ); END; / Create the AQ BEGIN dbms_aqadm.create_queue ( queue_name = 'userQueue', queue_table = 'myQueueTable' ); END; / Start the AQ BEGIN dbms_aqadm.start_queue ( queue_name = 'userQueue'); END; / The above commands can be executed in a single PL/SQL block, but are shown as separate blocks in this example for ease of reference. Configure WebLogic Server and Add JMS Objects All these steps are executed from the WebLogic Server Administration Console. Log in as the webLogic user. Configure a WebLogic Data Source The data source is required for the database connection to the AQ created above. Navigate to domain > Services > Data Sources and press New then Generic Data Source. Use the values:Name: aqjmsuserDataSource JNDI Name: jdbc/aqjmsuserDataSource Database type: Oracle Database Driver: *Oracle’ Driver (Thin XA) for Instance connections; Versions:9.0.1 and later Connection Properties: Enter the connection information to the database containing the AQ created above and enter aqjmsuser for the User Name and Password. Press Test Configuration to verify the connection details and press Next. Target the data source to the soa server. The data source will be displayed in the list. It is a good idea to test the data source at this stage. Click on aqjmsuserDataSource, select Monitoring > Testing > soa_server1 and press Test Data Source. The result is displayed at the top of the page. Configure a JMS System Module The JMS system module is required to host the JMS foreign server for AQ resources. Navigate to Services > Messaging > JMS Modules and select New. Use the values: Name: AqJmsModule (Leave Descriptor File Name and Location in Domain empty.) Target: soa_server1 Click Finish. The other resources will be created in separate steps. The module will be displayed in the list. Configure a JMS Foreign Server A foreign server is required in order to reference a 3rd-party JMS provider, in this case the database AQ, within a local WebLogic server JNDI tree. Navigate to Services > Messaging > JMS Modules and select (click on) AqJmsModule to configure it. Under Summary of Resources, select New then Foreign Server. Name: AqJmsForeignServer Targets: The foreign server is targeted automatically to soa_server1, based on the JMS module’s target. Press Finish to create the foreign server. The foreign server resource will be listed in the Summary of Resources for the AqJmsModule, but needs additional configuration steps. Click on AqJmsForeignServer and select Configuration > General to complete the configuration: JNDI Initial Context Factory: oracle.jms.AQjmsInitialContextFactory JNDI Connection URL: <empty> JNDI Properties Credential:<empty> Confirm JNDI Properties Credential: <empty> JNDI Properties: datasource=jdbc/aqjmsuserDataSource This is an important property. It is the JNDI name of the data source created above, which points to the AQ schema in the database and must be entered as a name=value pair, as in this example, e.g. datasource=jdbc/aqjmsuserDataSource, including the “datasource=” property name. Default Targeting Enabled: Leave this value checked. Press Save to save the configuration. At this point it is a good idea to verify that the data source was written correctly to the config file. In a terminal window, navigate to $MIDDLEWARE_HOME/user_projects/domains/soa_domain/config/jms and open the file aqjmsmodule-jms.xml . The foreign server configuration should contain the datasource name-value pair, as follows: <foreign-server name="AqJmsForeignServer"> <default-targeting-enabled>true</default-targeting-enabled> <initial-context-factory>oracle.jms.AQjmsInitialContextFactory</initial-context-factory> <jndi-property> <key> datasource </key> <value> jdbc/aqjmsuserDataSource </value> </jndi-property> </foreign-server> </weblogic-jms> Configure a JMS Foreign Server Connection Factory When creating the foreign server connection factory, you enter local and remote JNDI names. The name of the connection factory itself and the local JNDI name are arbitrary, but the remote JNDI name must match a specific format, depending on the type of queue or topic to be accessed in the database. This is very important and if the incorrect value is used, the connection to the queue will not be established and the error messages you get will not immediately reflect the cause of the error. The formats required (Remote JNDI names for AQ JMS Connection Factories) are described in the section Configure AQ Destinations of the Oracle® Fusion Middleware Configuring and Managing JMS for Oracle WebLogic Server document mentioned earlier. In this example, the remote JNDI name used is XAQueueConnectionFactory because it matches the AQ and data source created earlier, i.e. thin with AQ. Navigate to JMS Modules > AqJmsModule > AqJmsForeignServer > Connection Factories then New.Name: AqJmsForeignServerConnectionFactory Local JNDI Name: AqJmsForeignServerConnectionFactory Note: this local JNDI name is the JNDI name which your client application, e.g. a later BPEL process, will use to access this connection factory. Remote JNDI Name: XAQueueConnectionFactory Press OK to save the configuration. Configure an AQ JMS Foreign Server Destination A foreign server destination maps the JNDI name on the foreign JNDI provider to the respective local JNDI name, allowing the foreign JNDI name to be accessed via the local server. As with the foreign server connection factory, the local JNDI name is arbitrary (but must be unique), but the remote JNDI name must conform to a specific format defined in the section Configure AQ Destinations of the Oracle® Fusion Middleware Configuring and Managing JMS for Oracle WebLogic Server document mentioned earlier. In our example, the remote JNDI name is Queues/USERQUEUE , because it references a queue (as opposed to a topic) with the name USERQUEUE. We will name the local JNDI name queue/USERQUEUE, which is a little confusing (note the missing “s” in “queue), but conforms better to the JNDI nomenclature in our SOA server and also allows us to differentiate between the local and remote names for demonstration purposes. Navigate to JMS Modules > AqJmsModule > AqJmsForeignServer > Destinations and select New.Name: AqJmsForeignDestination Local JNDI Name: queue/USERQUEUE Remote JNDI Name:Queues/USERQUEUE After saving the foreign destination configuration, this completes the JMS part of the configuration. We still need to configure the JMS adapter in order to be able to access the queue from a BPEL processt. 4. Create a JMS Adapter Connection Pool in Weblogic Server Create the Connection Pool Access to the AQ JMS queue from a BPEL or other SOA process in our example is done via a JMS adapter. To enable this, the JmsAdapter in WebLogic server needs to be configured to have a connection pool which points to the local connection factory JNDI name which was created earlier. Navigate to Deployments > Next and select (click on) the JmsAdapter. Select Configuration > Outbound Connection Pools and New. Check the radio button for oracle.tip.adapter.jms.IJmsConnectionFactory and press Next. JNDI Name: eis/aqjms/UserQueue Press Finish Expand oracle.tip.adapter.jms.IJmsConnectionFactory and click on eis/aqjms/UserQueue to configure it. The ConnectionFactoryLocation must point to the foreign server’s local connection factory name created earlier. In our example, this is AqJmsForeignServerConnectionFactory . As a reminder, this connection factory is located under JMS Modules > AqJmsModule > AqJmsForeignServer > Connection Factories and the value needed here is under Local JNDI Name. Enter AqJmsForeignServerConnectionFactory into the Property Value field for ConnectionFactoryLocation. You must then press Return/Enter then Save for the value to be accepted. If your WebLogic server is running in Development mode, you should see the message that the changes have been activated and the deployment plan successfully updated. If not, then you will manually need to activate the changes in the WebLogic server console.Although the changes have been activated, the JmsAdapter needs to be redeployed in order for the changes to become effective. This should be confirmed by the message Remember to update your deployment to reflect the new plan when you are finished with your changes. Redeploy the JmsAdapter Navigate back to the Deployments screen, either by selecting it in the left-hand navigation tree or by selecting the “Summary of Deployments” link in the breadcrumbs list at the top of the screen. Then select the checkbox next to JmsAdapter and press the Update button. On the Update Application Assistant page, select “Redeploy this application using the following deployment files” and press Finish. After a few seconds you should get the message that the selected deployments were updated. The JMS adapter configuration is complete and it can now be used to access the AQ JMS queue. You can verify that the JNDI name was created correctly, by navigating to Environment > Servers > soa_server1 and View JNDI Tree. Then scroll down in the JNDI Tree Structure to eis and select aqjms. This concludes the sample. In the following post, I will show you how to create a BPEL process which sends a message to this advanced queue via JMS. Josh (pictured right) is Sr. Oracle DBA at United Healthcare. He used to work for Oracle Support years ago but for the last 6 years at UHC. Josh is a member of the ERP DBA team, working with Exalogic, Oracle ERP R12, & RAC. Along the exhibit/vendor row, I met with Marco Gangano, National Sales Manager at Mythics. It was great getting to meet Marco and I look forward to working with his company with regards to Support Best Practices. In addition, Lissette Paez (left) was representing TAM Training. TAM Training is an Oracle University, award-winning training partner. They cover training across the scope of Oracle products with 7 facilities in the U.S. Lissette and I have done a couple of these Oracle Days before. It's great to see familiar faces. A little while ago, I was down in this area to work with Citrix with an onsite session on Support Best Practices. My ASP.NET news sources

I just posted about the ASP.NET Daily Community Spotlight. I was going to list a bunch of my news sources at the end, but figured this deserves a separate post. I've been following a lot of development blogs for a long time - for a while I subscribed to over 1500 feeds and read them all. That doesn't scale very well, though, and it's really time consuming. Since the community spotlight requires an interesting ASP.NET post every day of the year, I've come up with a few sources of ASP.NET news. Top Link Blogs Chris Alcock's The Morning Brew is a must-read blog which highlights each day's best blog posts across the .NET community. He covers the entire Microsoft development, but generally any of the top ASP.NET posts I see either have already been listed on The Morning Brew or will be there soon. Elijah Manor posts a lot of great content, which is available in his Twitter feed at @elijahmanor, on his Delicious feed, and on a dedicated website - Web Dev Tweets. While not 100% ASP.NET focused, I've been appreciating Joe Stagner's Weekly Links series, partly since he includes a lot of links that don't show up on my other lists. Twitter Over the past few years, I've been getting more and more of my information from my Twitter network (as opposed to RSS or other means). Twitter is as good as your network, so if getting good information off Twitter sounds crazy, you're probably not following the right people. I already mentioned Elijah Manor (@elijahmanor). I follow over a thousand people on Twitter, so I'm not going to try to pick and choose a list, but one good way to get started building out a Twitter network is to follow active Twitter users on the ASP.NET team at Microsoft: @scottgu (well, not on the ASP.NET team, but their great grand boss, and always a great source of ASP.NET info) @shanselman @haacked @bradwilson @davidfowl @InfinitiesLoop @davidebbo @marcind @DamianEdwards @stevensanderson @bleroy @humancompiler @osbornm @anurse I'm sure I'm missing a few, and I'll update the list. Building a Twitter network that follows topics you're interested in allows you to use other tools like Cadmus to automatically summarize top content by leveraging the collective input of many users. Twitter Search with Topsy You can search Twitter for hashtags (like #aspnet, #aspnetmvc, and #webmatrix) to get a raw view of what people are talking about on Twitter. Twitter's search is pretty poor; I prefer Topsy. Here's an example search for the #aspnetmvc hashtag: http://topsy.com/s?q=%23aspnetmvc You can also do combined queries for several tags: http://topsy.com/s?q=%23aspnetmvc+OR+%23aspnet+OR+%23webmatrix Paper.li Paper.li is a handy service that builds a custom daily newspaper based on your social network. They've turned a lot of people off by automatically tweeting "The SuperDevFoo Daily is out!!!" messages (which can be turned off), but if you're ignoring them because of those message, you're missing out on a handy, free service. My paper.li page includes content across a lot of interests, including ASP.NET: http://paper.li/jongalloway When I want to drill into a specific tag, though, I'll just look at the Paper.li post for that hashtag. For example, here's the #aspnetmvc paper.li page: http://paper.li/tag/aspnetmvc Delicious I mentioned previously that I use Delicious for managing site links. I also use their network and search features. The tag based search is pretty good: Even better, though, is that I can see who's bookmarked these links, and add them to my Delicious network. After having built out a network, I can optimize by doing less searching and more leaching leveraging of collective intelligence. Community Sites I scan DotNetKicks, the weblogs.asp.net combined feed, and the ASP.NET Community page, CodeBetter, Los Techies, CodeProject, and DotNetSlackers from time to time. They're hit and miss, but they do offer more of an opportunity for finding original content which others may have missed. Terms of Enrampagement When someone's on a tear, I just manually check their sites more often. I could use RSS for that, but it changes pretty often. I just keep a mental note of people who are cranking out a lot of good content and check their sites more often. What works for you?
