• Slow boot on Ubuntu 12.04, probable cause the network connection

• Is the output of Eclipse's incremental java compiler used in production? Or is it simply to support Eclipse's features?

  I'm new to Java and Eclipse. One of my most recent discoveries was how Eclipse comes shipped with its own java compiler (ejc) for doing incremental builds. Eclipse seems to by default output incrementally built class files to the projRoot/bin folder. I've noticed too that many projects come with ant files to build the project that uses the java compiler built into the system for doing the production builds. Coming from a Windows/Visual Studio world where Visual Studio is invoking the compiler for both production and debugging, I'm used to the IDE having a more intimate relationship with the command-line compiler. I'm used to the project being the make file. So my mental model is a little off. Is whats produced by Eclipse ever used in production? Or is it typically only used to support Eclipse's features (ie its intellisense/incremental building/etc)? Is it typical that for the final "release" build of a project, that ant, maven, or another tool is used to do the full build from the command line? Mostly I'm looking for the general convention in the Eclipse/Java community. I realize that there may be some outliers out there who DO use ecj in production, but is this generally frowned upon? Or is this normal/accepted practice?

• When creating an library published on CodePlex, how "bad" would it be for the unit-test projects to rely on commercial products?

  I have started a project on CodePlex for a WebDAV server implementation for .NET, so that I can host a WebDAV server in my own programs. This is both a learning/research project (WebDAV + server portion) as well as a project I think I can have much fun with, both in terms of making it and using it. However, I see a need to do mocking of types here in order to unit-testing properly. For instance, I will be relying on HttpListener for the web server portion of the WebDAV server, and since this type has no interface, and is sealed, I cannot easily make mocks or stubs out of it. Unless I use something like TypeMock. So if I used TypeMock in the unit-test projects on this library, how bad would this be for potential users? The projects are made in C# 3.5 for .NET 3.5 and 4.0, and the project files was created with Visual Studio 2010 Professional. The actual class libraries you would end up referencing in your software would of course not be encumbered with anything remotely like this, only the unit-test libraries. What's your thoughts on this? As an example, I have in my old code-base, which is private, the ability to just initiate a WebDAV server with just this: var server = new WebDAVServer(); This constructs, and owns, a HttpListener instance internally, and I would like to verify through unit-tests that if I dispose of this server object, the internal listener is disposed of. If, on the other hand, I use the overload where I hand it a listener object, this object should not be disposed of. Short of exposing the internal listener object to the outside world, something I'm a bit loath to do, how can I in a good way ensure that the object was disposed of? With TypeMock I can mock away parts of this object even though it isn't accessed through interfaces. The alternative would be for me to wrap everything in wrapper classes, where I have complete control.

• Scalable Architecture for modern Web Development [on hold]

  I am doing research about Scalable architecture for Web Development, the research is solely to support Modern Web Development with flexible architecture which can scale up/down according to the needs without losing any core functionality. By Modern Web I mean to support all the Devices used to access websites, but the loading mechanism for all devices would be different. My quest of architecture is: For PC: Accessing web in PC is faster but it also depends on the Geo-location, so, the application would check by default the capacity of Internet/Browser and load the page according to it. For Mobile: Most of the mobile design these days either hide information or use different version of same application. eg: facebook uses m.facebook.com which is completely different than PC version. Hiding the things from Mobile using JavaScript or CSS is not a solution as it'll consume the bandwidth and make the application slow. So, my architecture research is about Serving one Application, which has different stack. When the application receives the request it'd send the Packaged Stack to the received request. This way the load time for end users would be faster and maintenance of application for developers would be easier. I am researching about for 4-tier(layered) architecture like: Presentation Layer Application Logic Layer -- The main Logic layer which stores the Presentation Stack Business Logic Layer Data Layer Main Question: Have you come across of similar architecture? If so, then can you list the links here, I'm very much interested to learn about those implementations specially in real world scenario. Have you thought about similar architectures and tried your own ideas, or if you have any ideas regarding this, then I urge to share. • Creating country specific twitter/facebook accounts

  I see many companies that have an international presence trying to localize their social media presence by creating country or language specific accounts. However some seemed to have done so without following a consistent pattern, one example being the World Wildlife Fund when you look at their Twitter accounts: World_Wildlife : verified account with 200K followers WWF : main account with 800K followers www_uk : lower case with underscore between WWF and country indicator WWFCanada : upper case with country indicator attached to WWF ... I am planning to build a website which hopefully will grow global and would like to avoid this sort of inconsistencies. Also, I was comparing what Twitter and Facebook allow in their username and found out that they don't allow the same characters to be used (e.g. for instance that the former doesn't allow . whereas the latter does) making difficult to ensure consistency across social networks. Hence my questions: Are there known naming schemes for creating localized Twitter and Facebook accounts while maintaining a certain consistency between them (best effort)? Are there any researches out there that have proven whether some schemes were better than others in terms of readability and/or SEO?

  Through help on this site I was able to draw the triangles of an unrotated, nonscaled nontransformed mesh created in Blender and exported to OBJ, accurately imported through Assimp and rendered in XNA Graphics. However after applying rotation on a single axis in Blender(Z) and adding materials(I wanted to test loading of materials through Assimp) the same mesh appears incomplete. Is something wrong with my view matrix or is it something else? • A Panorama of JavaOne Latin America

  As you know, JavaOne Latin America 2012 was held at the Transamerica Expo Center in Sao Paulo, Brazil on December 4-6. It was a resounding success with a great vibe, excellent technical content and numerous world class speakers, both local and international. Various folks like Tori Wieldt, Steve Chin, Arun Gupta, Bruno Borges and myself looked at the conference from slightly different colored lenses. It's interesting to put them all together in a panoramatic collage: Tori wrote about the Sao Paulo Geek Bike Ride held the Saturday before the conference here (enjoy the photos and video).   Photo by Jennifer Ortiz In his article, It's Time To Occupy IT, AIIM CEO and president John Mancini examines the evolution of "Systems of Engagement," the social technologies that are transforming how customers and employees relate to and interact with companies. Surviving the disruption that transformation entails is a matter of when, rather than if, a given organization embraces the change. But as Mancini points out, that transformation will require a "new breed" of IT professional: "While addressing this kind of challenge requires technical skills, it also requires process and customer acumen more often found in the business than in our IT departments. It requires a new type of information professional, whose expertise includes technical and domain knowledge, but who also has an idea of how the pieces of a process that spans the worlds of Systems of Record and Systems of Engagement should fit together. Gartner estimates that the demand for this new breed of information professional will grow by 50 percent by 2015." Though Mancini makes no reference to the title, the skills he desribes are those of the IT architect. While the specific definition of the role remains fodder for seemingly endless discussion and debate on various social networks and forums, the fact remains that the skills required for success in the evolving world of IT will increasingly involve a deep understanding of how all the pieces fit together.

  When watching the SQL PASS session “What’s Coming Next in SSIS?” of Steve Swartz, the Group Program Manager for the SSIS team, an interesting question came up: Why is SSIS thought of to be BI, when we use it so frequently for other sorts of data problems? The answer of Steve was that he breaks the world of data work into three parts: Process of inputs BI   Enterprise Information Management All the work you have to do when you have a lot of data to make it useful and clean and get it to the right place. This covers master data management, data quality work, data integration and lineage analysis to keep track of where the data came from. All of these are part of Enterprise Information Management. Next, Steve told Microsoft is developing SSIS as part of a large push in all of these areas in the next release of SQL. So SSIS will be, next to a BI tool, part of Enterprise Information Management in the next release of SQL Server. • Starting an HTML canvas game with no graphics skills

  I want to do some hobby game development, but I have some unfortunate handicaps that have me stuck in indecision; I have no artistic talent, and I also have no experience with 3D graphics. But this is just a hobby project that might not go anywhere, so I want to develop the stuff I care about; if the game shows good potential, my graphic "stubs" can be replaced with something more sophisticated. I do, however, want my graphics engine to render something approximate to the end goal. The game is tile-based, with each tile being a square. Each tile also has an elevation. My target platform (subject to modification) is JavaScript rendering to the HTML 5 canvas, either with a 2D or WebGL context. My question to those of you with game development experience is whether it's easier to develop an isometric game using a 2D graphics engine and sprites or a 3D game using rudimentary 3D primitives and basic textures? I realize that there are limitations to isometric projection, but if it makes developing my throwaway graphics engine easier, I'm OK with the visual warts that would be introduced. Or is representing a 3D world with an actual 3D engine easier?

• Determinism in multiplayer simulation with Box2D, and single computer

  I wrote a small test car driving multiplayer game with Box2D using TCP server-client communcations. I ran 1 instance of server.exe and 2 instance of client.exe on the same machine that I code and compile the executables. I type inputs (WASD for a simple car movement) into one of the 2 clients and I can get both clients to update the simulation. There are 2 cars in the simulation. As long as the cars do not collide, I get the same identical output on both client.exe. I can run the car(s) around for as long as I could they still update the same. However, if I start to collide the cars, very quickly they go out of sync. My tools: Windows 7, C++, MSVS 2010, Box2D, freeGlut. (For any deterministic engine) Determinism is gauranteed if playback of recorded inputs is on the same machine with exe compiled using same compiler and machine. Additionally my server.exe and client.exe gameloop is single thread with blocking socket calls and fixed time step. Question: Can anyone explain what I did wrong to get different Box2D output?

• Where do I start in regards to making a Gnome/Unity Form Application

  Ok so I am familiar with developing Form and Console applications on Windows using Visual Studio .Net with C#, but where do I start when it comes to Linux distro's like Ubuntu, is there an equivalent? How would one go about matching what they can do in a Windows environment with .Net and C# in a Linux environment without .Net coding in something like Java or C/C++? I am aware of Eclipse, does eclipse have a form designer or do you have to code the design of any Gnome/Unity forms manually? Can I use eclipse to write the Linux equivalent of a console application, that you just double click on to run? I also know about Mono, but the idea is that I want to learn how to develop software without using anything in the Microsoft stack and am not sure where to start. What is the standard language/framework used to develop these types of applications on Linux? As I become more proficient with Visual Studio, C# and .Net, it has struck me that without these Microsoft tools, I am nothing. I am only capable of developing for the Microsoft OS and this scares me. This isn't some anti Microsoft thing, Microsoft makes some incredible Software/Hardware/Operating Systems/IDE's, but it is generally a bad idea to put all of your eggs in one basket so if I want to learn how to develop Terminal and Gnome/Unity form applications where in the world do I start? I have used Linux on and off for years, but Windows has been my primary OS. However I have watched Linux get better and better and as much as I love Windows 7, I am dubious about Windows 8 (I for one will sorely miss my start menu)! Obviously MS aren't going anywhere anytime soon and I could spend the the next couple of decades developing for .Net without any issues but just because you can get away with something doesn't always mean it's a good idea.   I'm on the way back from a great experience in Cluj, Romania: the Oracle Developer Day that was held here today. After the Oracle Developer Day in Warsaw, two days ago, I flew to Bucharest and then had to wait about 6 hours for the flight to Cluj. So I spent several of those hours in a taxi, with a very nice driver who showed me all over the place in Bucharest, such as the Palace of Parliament (according to Wikipedia, "the world's largest civilian building, most expensive administrative building, and heaviest building"): He also taught me a lot of Romanian. (My current phonetic-based vocabulary can be admired and/or ridiculed here.) Meeting Emilian Bold (third on the right below) from the NetBeans Dream Team was a definite highlight: The above shows the three speakers on the Java Track "preparing" for their sessions; me, Lukas Jungmann, and Emilian Bold. In Oracle's Gregor Rayman's keynote, this particular slide responded well to my NetBeans heart: The "Java Track" had sessions on Java EE 6, the NetBeans Platform, and Java Web Services, as well as "What's New in NetBeans IDE 7.1", where Emilian, shown in action below, outlined the NetBeans community, e.g., the NetBeans Dream Team and the NetBeans governance board. (But it was all in Romanian so I'm not really sure what was said exactly!) Finally, there was time to recover from the whole day, right before my trip back to Bucharest: All in all a great day! Looking forward to remaining in touch with the many people I met today.

  I wake up with a clear vision, but sadly my laptop card doesn't do displacement mapping nor glVertexAttribDivisor so I can't test it out; I'm left sharing here: With geomipmapping, the grid at any factor is transposable - if you pass in an offset - say as a uniform - you can reuse the same vertex and index array again and again. If you also pass in the offset into the heightmap as a uniform, the vertex shader can do displacement mapping. If the displacement map is mipmapped, you get the advantages of trilinear filtering for distant maps. And, if the scenery is closer, rather than exposing that the you have a world made out of quads, you can use your transposable grid vertex array and indices to do vertex-shader interpolation (fancy splines) to do super-smooth infinite zoom? So I have some questions: does it work? In theory, in practice? does anyone do it? Does this technique have a name? Papers, demos, anything I can look at? does glVertexAttribDivisor mean that you can have a single glMultiDrawElementsEXT or similar approach to draw all your terrain tiles in one call rather than setting up the uniforms and emitting each tile? Would this offer any noticeable gains? does a heightmap that is GL_LUMINANCE take just one byte per pixel(=vertex)? (On mainstream cards, obviously. Does storage vary in practice?) Does going to the effort of reusing the same vertices and indices mean that you can basically fill the GPU RAM with heightmap and not a lot else, giving you either bigger landscapes or more detailed landscapes/meshes for the same bang? is mipmapping the displacement map going to work? On future cards? Is it going to introduce unsurmountable inaccuracies if it is enabled?

• What data to send when tracking clicks with Google Analytics events (and how)?

  When tracking clicks on links, there are 3 items I'm interested in: link location in the page by grabbing the id of the closest parent: to see influence of location on click-through link text: to see influence of text on click-through link href attribute value: to see where people go when leaving my website The problem when using Google Analytics to track those clicks is that events only have 3 available text fields, one of which being the category, which if you use to store one of the above items will create a mess in your Event reporting because you will have as many categories as item values. Therefore if you assign a predefined value to the category (e.g. clicks), then you're left with only 2 event fields (action, label) to store 3 items (location, text, href). That in itself isn't the end of the world because you can concatenate 2 items into 1 event field, then use the reporting or the API to filter things out. Accordingly what I plan on doing is this: category: clicks action: {location_on_page} ¦ {text} label: {href} where {__} are variable values related to the clicked links With this I can easily create some reports directly via the GUI: downloads: include only events where label ends with .pdf click outs to particular domains: include only events where label contains domain And for more complex tasks I need to export the data (or use the API): influence of location on clicks: for each location in the design, count number of events that have that location in the action, then corroborate with pageviews of the corresponding pages. Whilst this looks good I'm wondering if there is a better approach, hence the following questions: Q1: Can you foresee any particular issues with this particular setup (e.g. things I won't be able to report on)? Q2: Can you think of other data that would be interesting to include in the event?

  That’s right: Wessty is on tour. Okay, the banner and the tour is a little over the top, but I am really excited about my upcoming speaking engagements to spread the word about HTML 5! I have already kicked off the tour with the Winnipeg Code Camp last weekend with the world premiere of HTML 5 for .NET Pro presentation, and the turn out fantastic. It was the last presentation of the day, but we still had some great questions about the new standard and got to see how HTML 5 can fit into .NET web applications today. In any case, above you can see the confirmed presentations that I will be doing so far in 2011, but there are a few more events that I have heard about that I hope to add to that list. Ultimately, expect that list to be updated over the course of the year as the year is young and there are plenty of conferences coming up!
