• Inserting clobs into oracle with ODBC

  I'm trying to insert a clob into Oracle. If I try this with an OdbcConnection it does not insert the data into the database. It returns 1 row affected and no errors but nothing is inserted into the database. It does work with an OracleConnection. However, using the Microsoft OracleClient makes our webservices often crash with an AccessViolationException (Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt.). This happens a lot when we use OracleDataAdapter.Fill(dataset). So using this doesn't seem like an option. Is there any way to insert/update clobs with more then 4.000 characters from .Net with an OdbcConnection?

• Are these tables too big for SQL Server or Oracle

  Hey all, I'm not much of a database guru so I would like some advice. Background We have 4 tables that are currently stored in Sybase IQ. We don't currently have any choice over this, we're basically stuck with what someone else decided for us. Sybase IQ is a column-oriented database that is perfect for a data warehouse. Unfortunately, my project needs to do a lot of transactional updating (we're more of an operational database) so I'm looking for more mainstream alternatives. Question Given these tables' dimensions, would anyone consider SQL Server or Oracle to be a viable alternative? Table 1 : 172 columns * 32 million rows Table 2 : 453 columns * 7 million rows Table 3 : 112 columns * 13 million rows Table 4 : 147 columns * 2.5 million rows Given the size of data what are the things I should be concerned about in terms of database choice, server configuration, memory, platform, etc.?

• Oracle 10g - JAXB unmarshalling is not working as expected

  We're using Oracle 10g application server and deployed the Web service and trying to deploy the web service client. Server is working fine i.e.; marshalling is working fine. We're getting the output from the service properly but the search client is not unmarshalling (parsing) the response received. We're using all the tags under same name space so there is no name space problem. Different collections would exists in the XSD. Has anyone faced similar kind of issue?   We have a .NET application talking to Oracle 10g. Our DBA recently pulled a list of queries where executions is equal to parse_calls. We assumed that this would help us find all of the unparameterized queries in our code. Unexpectedly, the following query showed up near the top of this list, with 1,436,169 executions and 1,436,151 parses: SELECT bar.foocolumn FROM bartable bar, baztable baz WHERE bar.some_id = :someId AND baz.another_id = :anotherId AND baz.some_date BETWEEN bar.start_date AND (nvl(bar.end_date, baz.some_date + (1/84600)) - (1/84600)) Why is executions equal to parse_calls for this query?

  I'm refactoring a colleague's code, and I have several cases where he's using a cursor to get "the latest row that matches some predicate": His technique is to write the join as a cursor, order it by the date field descending, open the cursor, get the first row, and close the cursor. This requires calling a cursor for each row of the result set that drives this, which is costly for many rows. I'd prefer to be able to join, but what something cheaper than a correlated subquery: select a.id_shared_by_several_rows, a.foo from audit_trail a where a.entry_date = (select max(a.entry_date) from audit_trail b where b.id_shared_by_several_rows = a.id_shared_by_several_rows ); I'm guessing that since this is a common need, there's an Oracle analytic function that does this?

If insted of WHERE fl.nome = nome; I write WHERE fl.nome = 'folder1'; insted of passing it as parameter it works. I think im not using the parameter in the right way. How can I use it?

• Memory footprint of a parsed XML file in Classic ASP?

  Anyone know of a way to find out the amount of memory/size of a XMLDocument once it has parsed a XML file? I've been doing "beer mat" calculations so far but have been asked to come up with some more legit numbers through monitoring some how. I need to create about 1500 XML files (via FreeThreadedXMl-DOM object), which verge between 3-9K in size and store them in Application vars but our SysAdmin is worried about us gobbling up too much memory. Other than the crude method of booting up a fresh IIS instance and then loading everything in and monitoring before and after memory usage in Task Manager I can't think of a way of doing it with a bit more accuracy.

Something like a save this file link or a download prompt would be good. How do I do it?

• Oracle Database character set issue with the audit tables on Debian

  I've got Oracle XE installed on Debian linux and the character set is configured to AL32UTF8. There are several client applications that connects to a database from Windows with the different locales - French etc, not English. That's ok with all the client data these applications put into database, nothing converted and text data in French represents correctly. But texts in audit tables looks like '??????' if contains any not-english character. I suppose this is because audit records go to database in the different locale and it's not dependent on the client's globalization/locale settings. How this globalization issue can be fixed? thanks!

• How to split xml to header and items using smooks?

  I have a xml file roughly like this: <batch> <header> <headerStuff /> </header> <contents> <timestamp /> <invoices> <invoice> <invoiceStuff /> </invoice> <!-- Insert 1000 invoice elements here --> </invoices> </contents> </batch> I would like to split that file to 1000 files with the same headerStuff and only one invoice. Smooks documentation is very proud of the possibilities of transformations, but unfortunately I don't want to do those. The only way I've figured how to do this is to repeat the whole structure in freemarker. But that feels like repeating the structure unnecessarily. The header has like 30 different tags so there would be lots of work involved also.   I'm using Oracle object data types to represent a timespan or period. And I've got to do a bunch of operations that involve working with collections of periods. Iterating over collections in SQL is significantly faster than in PL/SQL. CREATE TYPE PERIOD AS OBJECT ( beginning DATE, ending DATE, ... some member functions...); CREATE TYPE PERIOD_TABLE AS TABLE OF PERIOD; -- sample usage SELECT <<period object>>.contains(period2) FROM TABLE(period_table1) t The problem is that the TABLE() function explodes the objects into scalar values, and I really need the objects instead. I could use the scalar values to recreate the objects but this would incur the overhead of re-instantiating the objects. And the period is designed to be subclassed so there would be additional difficulty trying to figure out what to initialize it as. Is there another way to do this that doesn't destroy my objects?

  Hi folks, I'm having a major issue with an XSD dataset mapping thingy that I'm using within my current project. We are using XSDs for some data abstraction (it's quicker and debatably more maintainable that using Parameterised SQL or a StoredProc), and on my machine (running in the VS development environment) thy're working fine. However, on the Pre-production server we use for our testing, the XSDs are not working correctly: some method calls will fail with the following error: System.ArgumentException: Value does not fall within the expected range. at Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleParameter.set_DbType(DbType value) Has anyone ever encountered this issue before? The methods being called are simple select statements using 1-3 parameters, and as I said before they work fine on my machine.

  Hello, I am developing a Java servlet which calls an Oracle stored procedure. The stored procedure is likely to "grow" over time, and I have concerns the amount of time taken to "display the results on a web page". While I am at the implementation stage, I would like some suggestions of a Persistence framework which will work on Apache Tomcat 5.5? I see two approaches to persisting the database results. A scheduled database query every N minutes, or something which utilises triggers. Hibernate seems like the obvious answer, but I have never called stored procedures from Hibernate (HQL and Criteria). Is there a more appropriate framework which can be used? Thank you. cheers Miles.

  I have a part's list built out in XML and each part is labeled as such: <division> <parts> <part number="123456 " drawing="123456 " cad="y"> <attribute> <header>Header</header> <list>2</list> </attribute> </part> And I need to get the data behind the number and drawing attributes without the white space. I tried xsl:strip-space on the specific elements, and across the board, but that only strips the content in between the tags. I unfortunately have no access to the back-end that's producing the XML, so removing the spaces there doesn't look like an option.

  Hi, I am trying to obtain the stored procedure metadata (procedure name,parameter types,parameter names etc) for a procedure declared within an Oracle package, using the standard ADO.NET API - DbConnection.GetSchema call. I am using the ODP driver. I see that the Package is listed in the 'Packages' and 'PackageBodies' metadata collections. The procedure parameter appears in the 'Arguments' and 'ProcedureParameters' collections. I do not see a way to get to the procedure information via the package metadata. Even if the procedure does not have any parameters there is a row in the 'ProcedureParameters' collection for this procedure. My question: To obtain the procedure metadata do I have to query the 'ProcedureParameters' collection and search for an entry with the required package name? I can then construct the procedure metadata based on the parameter information. Is there a shorter or quicker way to obtain the same information?

• Trying to parse xml, but xmldocument.loadxml() is trying to download?

  I have a string input that i do not know whether or not is valid xml. I think the simplest aprroach is to wrap new XmlDocument().LoadXml(strINPUT); In a try/catch. The problem im facing is, sometimes strINPUT is an html file, if the header of this file contains <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC ""-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"" ""http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd""> <html xml:lang=""en-GB"" xmlns=""http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"" lang=""en-GB""> ...like many do, it actually tries to make a connection to the w3.org url, which i really dont want it doing. Anyone know if its possible to just parse the string without trying to be clever and checking external urls? Failing that is there an alternative to xmldocument?

• How to get some xml that comes before and a little from after a DOM Node.

  I am using java and I am pretty open to using w3c DOM or DOM4J at this point. So lets say I have a Node like a text node that I have found something interesting in, like say an occurrence of a substring in the nodes text. If I want to get a string with a number characters preceding that node and a few characters after that node how may I do that? Basically I need to be able to display a snippet of the original xml around the occurrence of that string. The problem I have with getting the parent node for example and then calling asXML is that I no longer know the exact location of the substring in the text node. If I search again for that string value in the parents xml then I may find 2 occurrences or many more if the parent has other children that contain an occurrence of that string. Much appreciation if any one can answer this question.

  I need to generate unique and consecutive numbers (for use on an invoice), in a fast and reliable way. currently use a Oracle sequence, but in some cases generated numbers are not consecutive because of exceptions that may occur.
