  • Rsync: windows 7, synology: login error and permission denied error

    Good day to all of you all, I'm running into strange/stupid errors, and I hope anybody would be so kind to help me out. I have to admit, I am by no means a guru, so please bear with me :-) Situation: -Synology NAS (runs Linux), and Windows 7 desktop (1 normal/restricted user Lisa and 1 admin user). - Data from W7 desktop to be rsynced to synology: /volume1/home/Lisa/Backup - Rsync command: c:\cygwin\bin\rsync -avz /cygdrive/e/Lisa/ [email protected]:/volume1/homes/Lisa/Backup - I've set up ssh per these two threads: a. http://www.cesareriva.com/archives/102 b. http://www.cesareriva.com/archives/112 Now the horrors begin: - root is allowed to run the rsync succesfully, however, he doesn't login automatically (so I can not use rsync in W7 batchscripts, which is of course required). - Lisa is allowed to login automatically but he can not succesfully finish the rsync command because of permission errors: rsync change dir /volume1/homes/Lisa/Backup failed: permissions denied. This happens for each and every file and subdir rsync tries to create. However, the main directory (Backup) is created. When I try to copy files from windows explorer to the directory 'Backup' using the very same user Lisa everything goes smoothly. So, obviously, there is a permission problem somewhere; either my rsync-command isn't correct, or the folder permissions for homes/Lisa aren't correct (but, then again, Windows 7 copies files to that folder without any problems, so that does make me believe the homes/Lisa-permissions don't appear to be the problem). I also tried adding: --chmod=Dugo+x --chmod=ugo+r which I found somewhere on the web, to the rsync-command, but this didn't solve any problem and gave the exact errors. Would anybody please please help me on how to fix this? I am utterly frustrated about this, because I have been trying for 1 month to get everything to work and it simply doesn't work. I bought the big Synology to end the horrors of 20 external USB-disks for once and for all (we have many pictures and home vids of our deceased dogs and want to watch these, the horrors being 'what material is on what disk'). I'll gladly return the favour of somebody helping me out by buying you a nice beer (paypal), if you could end my misery. I am not extremely skilled on Linux (not at all :-( ) so if you could give an extra word when possible so I understand what to do, I'd be very grateful. Windows is listening on TCP port 445: TCP 0.0.0.0:445 WIN7TEST:0 ABHÖREN The corresponding incoming firewall rule isn't activated (4th column): When I choose "workplace network" the SMB incoming port 445 rule is still disabled in the advanced windows firewall configuration. I thought "public network" / "workplace network" and so on is influencing the windows firewall rules!? However, if you are an administrator and want to deploy it to the 500 desktops in your company, this would no longer qualify as personal use.   • Ubuntu, delete all files that start with '._'

    I want to delete all files that start with ._, when I run this command: me@me:/var/www/my/project$ sudo rm -Rvi ._* rm: cannot remove `._*': No such file or directory I'm pretty sure the . is causing problems, making it think I mean the current directory, what's the correct syntax to achieve this? I know these files originated from my Mac, I need a way of nuking them :-) Many thanks Ben

    I've just read the support for Windows XP SP2 is going to expire in a couple of months: http://www.infoworld.com/d/windows/microsoft-end-support-windows-2000-xp-sp2-july-13-961 x86 users have XP3 which is going to last abit longer but XP x64 doesn't have SP3. Is there some kind of official response to this? Or is it just about time to panic (and buy win7)?

  • Migrate data from one server to another using rsync

    I'm moving from one VPS to another, and I figured that the simplest way to transfer data would be rsync. However, the data is owned by a user, www-data, which doesn't have ssh privileges, and I'd like it to be owned by the same (named) user on the target machine. Obviously I need all file permissions preserved. I have SSH access via another user with sudo privileges on both machines. Is this possible to do this with rsync?

    I'm trying to set up per-user trac instances, using fcgid. The problem is that trac requires rw access to the trac instance, so I need the fcgi process to run under the respective user. I have the suexec, fcgid, and userdir Apache modules installed (on Debian). I put up vhost directive ScriptAliasMatch /~(.*)/trac /home/$1/public_html/trac.fcgi This works insofar as trac.fcgi is run, but unfortunately, under the www-data user. How can I make fcgid launch it under the $1 user?

  • ASP.NET application within wordpress installation on IIS 7

    Hi all, a client has a wordpress installation on their IIS server located at www.mydomain.com. We would like to put our asp.net application in a subdirectory of the wordpress installation - at something like mydomain.com/asp. When I navigate to that directory I get a standard wordpress "Page not found" error. I am more familiar with htaccess, so how would I get wordpress to ignore a subdirectory in IIS? Thanks!

    I tried printing out a short story from http://www.americanliterature.com and it came out with huge margins. The page is set up as a table with 3 columns. The left and right ones have space for ads or menus, and the middle one has the text. When I print it out it makes all the columns the same width. Is there any easy way to get a printer-friendly version of the page?

    Dear ladies and sirs. I have a need to create a self signed certificate non interactively. Unfortunately, the only tool that I know of (makecert) is interactive - it uses GUI to ask for a password. My OS is Windows (from XP to 2008). The only thing close that I managed to find is http://www.codeproject.com/Tips/125982/How-to-run-Makecert-without-password-window.aspx, however, it is still not good. Any ideas?

  • Automated incremental backups from Plesk on Centos to Amazon S3

    Hi, I've done a far bit of research on this via Google and there seems to be quite a few ways of possibly doing this. I'm looking to incrementally backup new and updated files in two directories on my Plesk run Centos 5.2 server: /backups and /var/www/vhosts (preferable only httdocs within each vhost) Has anyone got some great feedback from using the various solutions - seems to be various Java, Perl and Ruby based solutions out there.
