  • Windows 7 Service Pack 1 Install Failing

    I am having real trouble updating one of my machines to Win7 Service Pack 1. Its an Asus P5K board with an X9650 Quad Core Extreme chip, which is a less common type of chip. Was wondering if anyone has had issues with this kind of kit or if it may just be the motherboard is a little gone. The error message I get back from Microsoft Update is WindowsUpdate_80091007 and WindowsUpdate_dt000 which are fairly generic errors. Tried installing with the sp1 file based installer and got nowhere. The actual installer crashes with an SP Installer has crashed Its a fresh install on a fully scrubbed drive (an Intel 120GB SSD).

I need to scale down the display on my monitor like the example below: http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/4130/58518806.jpg Normally, this could be done with some adjustments in monitor's OSD, but there is no OSD on my LCD monitor. Is it even possible by software? Thanks. Edit: Graphic Card: Intel G33/G31 express Chipset family It would be good if it's permament but it's not needed. I can change my operating system but currently i use Windows XP.

    At the moment I am running a Windows Terminal Server 2008 for around 10 clients that use the server to run programs and access data. Is there anyway to separate the resources of each user so that they do not impact each other in terms of resources. User 1: Opens program User 2: Notices slow down I have looked into using Windows System Resource Manager but do not know if it provides what I need and if there are any other 3rd party tools that also provide this functionality.     I've upgraded recently from Windows Vista to Windows 8. When I try to rate my computer, it accesses DirectX 9 performance, then processes to DirectX 10 tests: And it gets stuck at this point. In 5–10 minutes, it shows error message: The video card is rather old: Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family. I'm pretty sure it does not support DirectX 10. Why does Windows assess it with DirectX 10? And how can I make it skip DirectX 10 tests and get the system rating? The driver was installed automatically by Windows 8 from Windows Update.   • Super-silent (mid tower) case and fan combo

    I want to build a HTPC for music/video/blu-ray playback (no gaming). I don't need an expensive HTPC case but just want to go with a standard medium tower case. However, I want it to be super silent so it doesn't make any annoying fan/disk noises when I watch movies. Ideally, it shouldn't make any noticeable noise at all. I understand that choosing a board, CPU and graphic card that run cool and don't consume a lot of power is important for designing a quiet machine, and I think I got that covered. However, there are so many choices in regards to cases, fans and power supplies that it's hard to get started. What are your recommendations for a case/fan (cpu+case)/power supply combination that run absolutely silent and can cool a standard Intel system with a low-power (possibly passively cooled) graphic card? I'm usually a fan of Antec cases, would an Antec Mini P180 be a good starting point? If so, which case fans, CPU fan and power supply would you recommend?

    I'm not a Windows SuperUser, but neither just the regular user. I don't mind browsing the Registry, using Process Explorer, reading the Event logs, (un)installing new drivers and so on, but all this only makes me solve some problems. I tend though to run into problems where these tools aren't enough. Which tools should I learn about to improve my troubleshooting skills in Windows? Currently I'm using Windows Vista x64 (not moved to 7 yet), facing audio/video stuttering problems and I think this is a good place to improve my troubleshooting skills. I know this post is similar to this question, but my machine is only hanging occationally.   • How to diagnose repeated freezing of windows 7 (comes back alive in few seconds)

    I installed Windows 7 in a 3 year old machine, it installed successfully, took all drivers and running great, but what happens is every 5-6 minutes it freezes for few seconds... 30 seconds to 1 minute and then comes back alive. I checked Event Viewer, nothing matching the frozen timeline. I would appriciate any help on how to detect causing service/hardware. After it comes alive, everything runs normal, I did run task manager and checked cpu usage, at time it freezes just before and after that no task took more cpu or memory, it was like idle machine. No external usb drives or no devices, on board intel desktop board with SATA HDD, SATA hdd running in absolute good mode.

  • Wrong PC-projector resolution in Windows 7

    I'm connecting a PC-projector (Benq MP721) to a Windows 7 Professional laptop (HP 6730b). All the output settings on the laptop, including the laptop screen, changes to 1024x768 (which the projector supports). However the projector says it receives 1360x768 and asks me to change the resolution to 1024x768. I'm using mirrored display. The laptop is 1024x768 The screen resolution in the control panel says 1024x768 The Intel graphics card utilities says 1024x768 The driver for the projector is a Generic PnP Monitor Is there anything in Windows 7 that would convert my 4:3 resolution to wide screen automatically?

  • Random flickering on 2.6.32 kernels after suspend

    I have XUbuntu 9.10 installed on a Toshiba NB200 netbook with Intel video card that's handled with i915 driver. With 2.6.31 stable, recommended kernel everything but WiFi works fine: Atheros ath9k WiFi shows too small signal power and loses packets in 'bursts' sometimes. With 2.6.32-* (I tested -9 to -11 from Ubuntu's kernel unstable ppa) everything works fine just prior to first suspend: echo mem >/sys/power/state. After it random unidentified fullscreen 'one-frame' flickering begins in Xorg, and after a couple of minutes everything eventually hangs while showing filled grey (not white; it is like default button colour) screen; no X keys are working: Ctrl+Alt+Fn don't, blind typing in console too. Magic SysRq still works and I was able to reboot. Also there is one out-of-tree kernel module called omnibook that is required to turn on WiFi and Bluetooth. Any advices?

  • Chrome pegs CPU playing YouTube videos

    I am not sure when this started, but the issue definitely exists in the latest version of Chrome (10.0.648.127). Playing youtube video at 320p essentially pegs the CPU. The process that kills is WindowServer which takes up the lion's share of the CPU. When I close the tab, everything goes back to normal. If I try this in Safari or Firefox, CPU usage is within acceptable levels. I am on a 2-3 year old MacMini, which is not the latest, but runs most apps fine. 1.83Mhz Intel Core 2 Duo. Is there a setting within Chrome I can set to fix this issue?

    I'm working on an embedded system which is going to be booting and hosting it's rootfs on an SSD disk. We are currently looking at using Intel X-18M SSDs. The file system structure will have a fairly static /usr section (modulo software upgrades) and an active /var and /var/log for maintaining state and logging. Given the wear-levelling done by the underlying flash does having separate partitions help or hinder? As modern SSDs appear as straight block devices and hide their mapping magic behind their firmware is there any point trying to optimise the choice of file-system that sits on-top of the SSD? Finally does enable SMART monitoring make any sense in this context or are their SSD specific ways of determining the underlying health of the storage hardware?

My application will have information that will sometimes be the same in both langauges, such as a person's photo, or different such as the person's biography.   • Server 2008 Hard Faults

    Hey all, plase bear with me as I haven't looked at a server in a very long time. The problem I am having is with a Windows 2008 Standard FE Service Pack 2 Intel Xeon X3430 @ 2.40 2.39 GHZ 4 GB Memory 64 Bit There seems to be no problems other than the physical memory peaking at 91%, always with over 100 Hard Faults Per Second. To my understanding hard faults should be fairly rare on a machine with. Are there any logs I can show you? Or investigate myself. The general performance of the machine is ok, i can access SBS2008 and change settings fairly smoothly without hangs etc. However, we connect to the server and do quite a bit of SQL via an application. For a record to retrieve say 20 rows, it can take 20+ seconds.   • How to install network drivers during installation?

    I have a server that I'm attempting to install windows onto. However, the disk is an iscsi target provided by ipxe. Everything appears to go well until about 3/4 through the install process I get an error about a critical driver missing and the installation is cancelled. I would say the critical driver would be the network card. It's an intel nic and the drivers are not on the windows installation CD. I tried slipstreaming them with RTSevenLite, but after it created the CD it seems it failed to make it bootable. I've also not been successful in making a bootable USB thumb drive or USB HDD. I suspect a buggy bios even though I have the latest. How to install network drivers during installation? Windows used to provide an optional F6 during install feature but this seems to be missing in Windows Servert 2008. Perhaps there is a way to do this, or another method?
