• C vs C++ function questions

  I am learning C, and after starting out learning C++ as my first compiled language, I decided to "go back to basics" and learn C. There are two questions that I have concerning the ways each language deals with functions. Firstly, why does C "not care" about the scope that functions are defined in, whereas C++ does? For example, int main() { donothing(); return 0; } void donothing() { } the above will not compile in a C++ compiler, whereas it will compile in a C compiler. Why is this? Isn't C++ mostly just an extension on C, and should be mostly "backward compatible"? Secondly, the book that I found (Link to pdf) does not seem to state a return type for the main function. I check around and found other books and websites and these also commonly do not specify return types for the main function. If I try to compile a program that does not specify a return type for main, it compiles fine (although with some warnings) in a C compiler, but it doesn't compile in a C++ compiler. Again, why is that? Is it better style to always specify the return type as an integer rather than leaving it out? Thanks for any help, and just as a side note, if anyone can suggest a better book that I should buy that would be great!

  .Net List class isn't thread safe. I hope to achieve the minimal lock needed and yet still fulfilling the requirement such that as for reading, phantom record is allowed, and for writing, they must be thread-safe so there won't be any lost updates. So I have something like public static List<string> list = new List<string>(); In Methods that have **List.Add**/**List.Remove** , I always lock to assure thread safety lock (lockHelper) { list.Add(obj); or list.Remove(obj); } In Methods that requires **List Reading** I don't care about phantom record so I go ahead to read without any locking. In this case. Return a bool by checking whether a string had been added. if (list.Count() != 0) { return list.Contains("some string") } All I did was locking write accesses, and allow read accesses to go through without any locking. Is my thread safety idea valid? I understand there is List size expansion. Will it be ok? My guess is that when a List is expanding, it may uses a temp. list. This is ok becasue the temp list size will always have a boundary, and .Net class is well implemented, ie. there shouldn't be any indexOutOfBound or circular reference problems when reading was caught in updates.

The vector of pointers will take care of itself when it goes out of scope, and the actual objects the pointers point to don't need to be deleted as there will be other references to it. • App_Themes Not Loading on Initial Load

  Hello, I have an application where different users can log in via a single portal login. When they log in, if they belong to more than 1 company they have to select the company they belong to. The theme will change if there is a custom theme for that company. Each page my application has inherits a "CustomPage" class Here is the code for the custom page: public class CustomPage : Page { protected void Page_PreInit(object sender, EventArgs e) { if (Globals.Company != null && Directory.Exists(Page.MapPath("~/App_Themes/" + Globals.Company.CompanyName))) { Page.Theme = Globals.Company.CompanyName; } else { Page.Theme = "Default"; } } } When the customer belongs to more than 1 company, and they select the company they belong to, the theme loads just fine. So, the problem I am having is this: If they belong to just 1 company, the company is automatically selected but the theme does not load right away. However, if I refresh the page, the theme loads just fine. Even the default theme will not load. The page has no css at all until I refresh. I am not using forms authentication and the default theme in the web config is "Default" <pages theme="Default"> Any thoughts to what might be going on? • Developing Modular Flex Applications

  Hi there I'd like to be able to understand how to develop a Flex application such that I could provide implementation classes at runtime. In the Java world I'd specify interfaces in an JAR (e.g. myapp-api.jar), the implementation in a separate JAR (e.g. myapp-impl.jar) and package these along with other resources in the application WAR (e.g. myapp.war). Within the code of the application I would instantiate the implementation classes dynamically. Is this approach possible in Flex? I'm aware that I can instantiate classes dynamically so that's a good start. I'm a bit confused by modules, RSLs and SWCs though. I was hoping to create a SWF application that had references to an interfaces SWC and an implementation SWC. The idea is that if I need to tweak the application for a specific customer then I could create a new implementation SWC and not have to modify the SWF or interface SWC. Any ideas?

• Zoom in Java Swing application

  Hi there, I am looking for ways to zoom in a Java Swing application. That means that I would like to resize all components in a given JPanel by a given factor as if I would take an screenshot of the UI and just applied an "Image scale" operation. The font size as well as the size of checkboxes, textboxes, cursors etc. has to be adjusted. It is possible to scale a component by applying transforms to a graphics object: protected Graphics getComponentGraphics(Graphics g) { Graphics2D g2d=(Graphics2D)g; g2d.scale(2, 2); return super.getComponentGraphics(g2d); } That works as long as you don't care about self-updating components. If you have a textbox in your application this approach ceases to work since the textbox updates itself every second to show the (blinking) cursor. And since it doesn't use the modified graphics object this time the component appears at the old location. Is there a possibility to change a components graphics object permanently? There is also a problem with the mouse click event handlers. The other possibility would be to resize all child components of the JPanel (setPreferredSize) to a new size. That doesn't work for checkboxes since the displayed picture of the checkbox doesn't change its size. I also thought of programming my own layout manager but I don't think that this will work since layout managers only change the position (and size) of objects but are not able to zoom into checkboxes (see previous paragraph). Or am I wrong with this hypothesis? Do you have any ideas how one could achieve a zoomable Swing GUI without programming custom components? I looked for rotatable user interfaces because the problem seems familiar but I also didn't find any satisfying solution to this problem. Thanks for your help, Chris

• Unnecessary Redundancy with Tables.

  My items are listed as follows; This is just a summary of course. But I'm using a method shown for the "Detail" table to represent a type of 'inheritence', so to speak - since "Item" and "Downloadable" are going to be identical except that each will have a few additional fields relevant only to them. My question is in this design pattern. This sort of thing appears many, many times in our projects - is there a more intelligent way to handle it? I basically need to normalize the tables as much as possible. I'm extremely new to databases and so this is all very confusing to me. There are 5 items. Awards, Items, Purchases, Tokens, and Downloads. They are all very, very similar, except each has a few pieces of data relevant only to itself. I've tried to use a declaration field (like an enumerator 'Type' field) in conjunction with nullable columns, but I was told that is a bad approach. What I have done is take everything similar and place it in a single table, and then each type has its own table that references a column in the 'base' table. The problem occurs with relationships, or junctions. Linking all of these back to a customer. Each type takes around 2 additional tables to properly junction all of the data together- and as such, my database is growing very, very large. Is there a smarter practice for this kind of behavior? • Change Default Winform Icon Across Entire App

  Can I change the default icon used on a Winform? Most of my forms have their icon property set to a custom icon. For the few forms that slip through the cracks, I don't want the generic "hey look, he made this in visual studio" icon. One solution is to tediously check every one of my forms to make sure they either have a custom icon set or have ShowIcon set to False. Another solution is to have every one of my forms inherit from a base class that sets a custom icon in the constructor. Aside from those solutions, what other options do I have? EDIT: I was hoping there would be a way to replace the source of the stock icon with my own. Is it in a resource file somewhere? Or is it embedded in a .NET dll that I can't (or really, really shouldn't) modify? BOUNTY EDIT: Is there a way to accomplish this without editing or writing a single line of code? I don't care how impractical, complicated, waste-of-time the solution is... I just want to know if it's possible. I need to satisfy my curiosity.

• Interrupting a thread from inside a runnable class? (java)

  I am trying to set up a method inside a class that implements the runnable interface that will set the interrupt status of that class. The reason i want to be able to do it from inside the class is there is some other clean up stuff that i need to take care of as well, and i would like to be able to do it all by calling one method instead of calling, for example: Gui gui = new Gui() // class that implements runnable Thread guiThread = new Thread(gui, "gui thread"); guiThread.start() ... ... guiThread.interrupt(); gui.cancel(); Currently my cancel code looks like this, however it isn't correctly setting the interrupt status of this thread. public void cancel() { Thread.currentThread().interrupt(); // other clean up code here. } Any advice on if/how i could get this working? Thanks. EDIT: I when i tried to get the cancel working, i commented out the guiThread.interrupt(), so that i wasn't just setting the status the reseting the status.

• Iterating Through N Level Children

  This seems like something neat that might be "built into" jQuery but I think it's still worth asking. I have a problem where that can easily be solved by iterating through all the children of a element. I've recently discovered I need to account for the cases where I would need to do a level or two deeper than the "1 level" (just calling .children() once) I am currently doing. jQuery.each(divToLookAt.children(), function(index, element) { //do stuff } ); This is what I'm current doing. To go a second layer deep, I run another loop after doing stuff code for each element. jQuery.each(divToLookAt.children(), function(index, element) { //do stuff jQuery.each(jQuery(element).children(), function(indexLevelTwo, elementLevelTwo) { //do stuff } ); } ); If I want to go yet another level deep, I have to do this all over again. This is clearly not good. I'd love to declare a "level" variable and then have it all take care of. Anyone have any ideas for a clean efficient jQueryish solution? Thanks!

  Hello Hackerz, Here is the idea A user can set a day alert for a birthday. (We do not care about the year of birth) He also picks if he wants to be alerted 0, 1, 2, ou 7 days (Delta) before the D day. Users have a timezone setting. I want the server to send the alerts at 8 am on the the D day - deleta +- user timezone Example: 12 jun, with "alert me 3 days before" will give 9 of Jun. My idea was to have a trigger_datetime extra field saved on the 'recurrent event' object. Like this a cron Job running every hour on my server will just check for all events matching irs current time hour, day and month and send to the alert. The problem from a year to the next the trigger_date could change ! If the alert is set on 1st of March, with a one day delay that could be either 28 or 29 of February .. Maybe i should not use the trigger date trick and use some other kind of scheme. All plans are welcome.

• Reading/Writing/Modifying a struct in C

  I am taking some information from a user (name, address, contact number) and store it in a struct. I then store this in a file which is opened in "r+" mode. I try reading it line by line and see if the entry I am trying to enter already exists, in which case I exit. Otherwise I append this entry at the end of the file. The problem is that when I open the file in "r+" mode, it gives me Segmentation fault! • Why is this removing all elements from my LinkedList?

  Why is my remove method removing every element from my Doubly Linked List? If I take out that if/else statements then I can successfully remove middle elements, but elements at the head or tail of the list still remain. However, I added the if/else statements to take care of elements at the head and tail, unfortunately this method now removes every element in my list. • What are advantages of using a one-to-one table relationship? (MySQL)

  What are advantages of using a one-to-one table relationship as opposed to simply storing all the data in one table? I understand and make use of one-to-many, many-to-one, and many-to-many all the time, but implementing a one-to-one relationship seems like a tedious and unnecessary task, especially if you use naming conventions for relating (php) objects to database tables. I couldn't find anything on the net or on this site that could supply a good real-world example of a one-to-one relationship. At first I thought it might be logical to separate 'users', for example, into two tables, one containing public information like an 'about me' for profile pages and one containing private information such as login/password, etc. But why go through all the trouble of using unnecessary JOINS when you can just choose which fields to select from that table anyway? If I'm displaying the user's profile page, obviously I would only SELECT id,username,email,aboutme etc. and not the fields containing their private info. Anyone care to enlighten me with some real-world examples of one-to-one relationships?

• Empty value when iterating a dictionary with .iteritems() method

  I am having some weird trouble with dictionaries, I am trying to iterate pairs from a dictionary to pass to another function. The loop for the iterator though for some reason always returns empty values. Here is the code: def LinktoCentral(self, linkmethod): if linkmethod == 'sim': linkworker = Linker.SimilarityLinker() matchlist = [] for k,v in self.ToBeMatchedTable.iteritems(): matchlist.append(k, linkworker.GetBestMatch(v, self.CentralDataTable.items())) Now if I insert a print line above the for loop: matchlist = [] print self.ToBeMatchedTable.items() for k,v in self.ToBeMatchedTable.iteritems(): matchlist.append(k, linkworker.GetBestMatch(v, self.CentralDataTable.items())) I get the data that is supposed to be in the dictionary printed out. The values of the dictionary are list objects. An example tuple I get from the dictionary when printing just above the for loop: >>> (1, ['AARP/United Health Care', '8002277789', 'PO Box 740819', 'Atlanta', 'GA', '30374-0819', 'Paper', '3676']) However, the for loop gives empty lists to the linkworker.GetBestMatch method. • DOS "pause" in Linux?

  Firstly, I'm REALLY new to programming. I've just started my first programming class two weeks ago, and I apologize if I sound newbish. My professor wants me to implement a "press any key to continue..." thing in my program. Basically when I run a program, he wants one line to come up [like printf("jfdskaljlfja");] then what would come up is "press any key to continue," before the next line runs. he told us that the DOS equivalent is system("pause"), but he wants us to do it linux. This is what my code looks like: #include <stdio.h> int main() { printf("This is the first line of this program); system("pause"); printf("This is the second line); } Except he wants us to do this in Linux, so system("pause") won't work in this case. Is there a way to have it do exactly what pause does, but in linux terms? again, sorry if i sound newbish. thank you so much! Also, he doesn't really care if the code is efficient or anything, as long as it runs. Again, i'm really new to programming, so the simplest answer would be much appreciated :)

• Set tier price on different products (special conditions) in Magento?

  Let’s say I sell mobile phones. I might sell phones with the following tiered pricing iPhone4 (1x$200ea. 3x$150ea. 10x$100ea.) iPhone4s (1x$300ea. 3x$250ea. 10x$200ea.) iPhone5 (1x$500ea. 3x$400ea. 10x$1300ea.) Plus maybe I sell Samsungs, Nokias, accessories, etc. So let’s say a customer wants to buy 3 iphones, but they want 1x iPhone 4, 1x iPhone 4s and 1x iPhone 5. Instead of getting the single unit price for each, we would want to group iphones, so that they would get the 3x price for each unit. So they would spend $150 on the iPhone 4, $250 on the iPhone 4s and $400 on the iPhone 5.... We’d have several categories and could create some type of spreadsheet for you, but would want to also have the ability to set up this categorization in the future. So please tell me how to get this done from magento admin or any other way?

• CSS challenge: Two background images, centered column with fixed with, min-height 100%

  In a nutshell I need a CSS solution for the following requirements: Layout: One centered column with fixed width and a minimum height of 100% Two vertically repeated background images behind the centered column, one aligned to the left, one aligned to the right Cross browser compatibility A little more details Today a new requirement for my current web site project came up: A background image with gradients on the left and right side. The challenge is now to specify two different background images while keeping the rest of the layout spec. Unfortunately the (simple) layout somehow doesn't go with the two backgrounds. My layout is basically one centered column with fixed width: #main_container { margin: 0 auto; min-height: 100%; width: 800px; } Furthermore it's necessary to stretch the column to a minimum height of 100%, since there are quite some pages with only little content. The following CSS styles take care of that: html { height: 100%; } body { margin: 0; height: 100%; padding: 0; } So far so good - until the two background image issue arrived... I tried the following solutions Two absolute positioned divs behind the main container One image defined with the body, one with the html CSS class One image defined with the body, the other one with a large div begind the main container With either one of them, the dynamic height solution was ruined. Either the main container didn't stretch to 100% when it was too small, or the background remained at 100% when the content was actually longer

• Storing data from database [mysql_num_rows]

  So I have this code to pass items from database to my order table. When I'm echoing the session. The session variable contains something so there's no problem with that. But when I echo those variables under numrows, it only shows nothing. • Globe SSL with NGINX SSL certificate problem, please help

  I have a big problem with installing a certificat for nginx (same happends with apache though) I have 3 files __domain_com.crt __domain_com.ca-bundle and ssl.key. I tried to append cat __domain_com.crt __leechpack_com.ca-bundle bundle.crt but if I do it like this i get an error: [emerg]: SSL_CTX_use_certificate_chain_file("/etc/nginx/__leechpack_com.crt") failed (SSL: error:0906D066:PEM routines:PEM_read_bio:bad end line error:140DC009:SSL routines:SSL_CTX_use_certificate_chain_file:PEM lib) And that's because the delimiters of the certificates arren't separated.
