• WCF Named Pipe IPC

  I have been trying to get up to speed on Named Pipes this week. The task I am trying to solve with them is that I have an existing windows service that is acting as a device driver that funnels data from an external device into a database. Now I have to modify this service and add an optional user front end (on the same machine, using a form of IPC) that can monitor the data as it passes between the device and the DB as well as send some commands back to the service. My initial ideas for the IPC were either named pipes or memory mapped files. So far I have been working through the named pipe idea using WCF Tutorial Basic Interprocess Communication . My idea is to set the Windows service up with an additional thread that implements the WCF NamedPipe Service and use that as a conduit to the internals of my driver. I have the sample code working, however I can not get my head around 2 issues that I am hoping that someone here can help me with: In the tutorial the ServiceHost is instantiated with a typeof(StringReverser) rather than by referencing a concrete class. Thus there seems to be no mechanism for the Server to interact with the service itself (between the host.Open() and host.Close() lines). Is it possible to create a link between and pass information between the server and the class that actually implements the service? If so, how? If I run a single instance of the server and then run multiple instance of the clients, it seems that each client gets a separate instance of the service class. I tried adding some state information to the class implementing the service and it was only retained within the instance of the named pipe. This is possibly related to the first question, but is there anyway to force the named pipes to use the same instance of the class that is implementing the service? Finally, any thoughts on MMF vs Named Pipes? Thanks for you help

• How to use HtmlEncode with TemplateFields, Data Binding, and a GridView

  I have a GridView bound to an ObjectDataSource. I've got it supporting editing as well, which works just fine. However, I'd like to safely HtmlEncode text that is displayed as we do allow special characters in certain fields. This is a cinch to do with standard BoundFields, as I just set HtmlEncode to true. But in order to setup validation controls, one needs to use TemplateFields instead. How do I easily add HtmlEncoding to output this way? This is an ASP.NET 2.0 project, so I'm using the newer data binding shortcuts (e.g. Eval and Bind). • Any task-control algorithms programming practices?

  Hi, I was just wondering if there's any field which concerns the task-control programming (or at least that's the way I call it). For a better explanation of task-control consider the following scenario: An application (master-thread) waits for a command - which might be a particular action or a set of actions the application should perform. When a command is received the master-thread creates a task (= spawns an independent thread which actually does the action) and adds a record in it's task-list - thus keeping track of the time of execution, thread handle, task priority...etc. The master-thread awaits for any other incoming commands while taking care of all the tasks - e.g: kills tasks running too long, prioritizes tasks with higher priorities, kills a task on a request of another task, limits the number of currently running tasks, allows task scheduling, cleans finished tasks (threads) and so on. The model is pretty similar to what we can see in OS dealing with running processes. Are there any good practices programming such task-models or is there some theoretical work done in this field? Maybe my question is too generalized, but at least I wanted to know whether there are any experiences working on such models or if there's a better approach. Thanks for any answers.

• how to convert bitmap image to CIELab image?

  Hello to stackoverflow members! This is my first post but I love reading the questions and answers on this forum! I'm using VS2008, CSharp, NET 3.5 and Windows XP Pro latest patches on this project. I am reading in a jpeg file to a bitmap image using CSharp in the following way: Bitmap bmp = new Bitmap("background.jpg"); Graphics g = Graphics.FromImage(bmp); I then write some text and logos on g using various DrawString and DrawImage commands. I then want to write this bitmap to a tiff file using the command: bmp.Save("final_artwork.tif", ImageFormat.Tiff); I don't know what the TIFF tags in the header of the final resultant TIFF file will be when you do bmp.Save as shown above? But what I want to produce is a TIFF image file with PHOTOMETRIC CIELab, BITSPERSAMPLE 8, SAMPLESPERPIXEL 3, FILLORDER MSB2LSB, ORIENTATION TOPLEFT, PLANARCONFIG CONTIG, and also uncompressed and singlestrip. Im fairly certain, at least I have not found anything about Microsoft API and CIELab, I can not convert the bitmap image to CIELab photometric and the other requirements using anything from the Microsoft API or .NET 3.5 environment - someone please correct if I am wrong. I have used libtiff in a project in the past but just to write a tiff file where the tiff image in memory was already in CIELab format and all the other requirements as noted per above. Im not certain libtiff can convert from my CSharp bitmap image, which is probably RGB photometric, to CIELab, 8 bps, and 3 spp? Maybe I can use OpenCVImage or Emgu CV or something similiar? So the main question is what is going to be the easiest way to get my final bitmap image as outlined above into a CIELab TIFF and also meeting the other requirements per above? • Best way to escape characters before jquery post ASP.NET MVC

  Hello, I am semi-new to ASP.NET MVC. I am building an app that is used internally for my company. The scenario is this: There are two Html.Listbox's. One has all database information, and the other is initally empty. The user would add items from the database listbox to the empty listbox. Every time the user adds a command, I call a js function that calls an ActionResult "AddCommand" in my EditController. In the controller, the selected items that are added are saved to another database table. Here is the code (this gets called every time an item is added): function Add(listbox) { ... //skipping initializing code for berevity var url = "/Edit/AddCommand/" + cmd; $.post(url); } So the problem occurs when the 'cmd' is an item that has a '/', ':', '%', '?', etc (some kind of special character) So what I'm wondering is, what's the best way to escape these characters? Right now I'm checking the database's listbox item's text, and rebuilding the string, then in the Controller, I'm taking that built string and turning it back into its original state. So for example, if the item they are adding is 'Cats/Dogs', I am posting 'Cats[SLASH]Dogs' to the controller, and in the controller changing it back to 'Cats/Dogs'. Obviously this is a horrible hack, so I must be missing something. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Error creating Rails DB using rake db:create

  Hi- I'm attempting to get my first "hello world" rails example going using the rails' getting started guide on my OSX 10.6.3 box.   Hi there, my goal is to secure the communication between MSMQ Queue Managers – I don’t want unknown clients sending messages to my MSMQ server. I have spent many hours now trying to get Transport security working for the net.msmq binding in WCF, where MSMQ is in Workgroup mode and the client and server do not have Active Directory… so I’m using certificates. I have created a new X.509 certificate, called Kristan and put it into the “Trusted people” store on the server and into the My store of Current User of the client. The error I’m getting is: An error occurred while sending to the queue: Unrecognized error -1072824272 (0xc00e0030).Ensure that MSMQ is installed and running. If you are sending to a local queue, ensure the queue exists with the required access mode and authorization. Using smartsniff, I see that there’s no attempted connection with the remote MSMQ, however, it’s an error probably coming from the local queue manager. • How do I use Powershell to print a list of hyperlinks that appear in a Word document?

  I asked this question last week, and my script cannot find any hyperlinks to change. Now I'm backing up and trying to simply open a single document and list the hyperlinks within. I've verified that the document includes hyperlinks to a number of anchors in the same document, and two hyperlinks to documents in the same directory. However, either Powershell isn't finding links in the doc or I'm outputting the list to the console improperly.   hi, I have this weird problem that I cannot handle myself. A class in the model of my mvp-project designed as singleton causes an InvalidCastException. The source of error is found in this code line where the deserialised object is assigned to the instance variable of the class: engineObject = (ENGINE)xSerializer.Deserialize(str); It occurs whenever I try to add one of my UserControls to a Form or to a different UC. All of my UCs have a special presenter that access the above mentioned instance variable of the singleton class. This is what I get when trying to add a UC somewhere: 'System.TypeInitializationException: The type initializer for 'MVP.Model.EngineData' threw an exception. ---- System.InvalidCastException: [A]Engine cannot be cast to [B]Engine.   Hello, I have 1 UserControl (SchoolclassAdministration.xaml) that is datatemplated with 1 ViewModel (SchoolclassAdministrationViewModel) I have 3 Models and 3 ViewModels in that scenario. Those 3 ViewModels must reflect the requirements of the View. The requirements are 3 "Areas" on the left side and 2 "Areas" on the right side. 3: SchoolclassFormular PupilFormular SubjectFormular Those have all Buttons for Add/Delete 2: PupilsDataGrid SubjectsDataGrid The Master-Detail scenario is between the: SchoolclassFormular = PupilsDataGrid = SubjectsDataGrid The switching of the ViewModelCollections work! My Problem scenario is this: The DataContext is on the SchoolclassAdministrationViewModel what is the ViewModel containing the AllSchoolclassesViewModel ObservableCollection bound to the SchoolclassAdministration.xaml UserControl. My SchoolclassViewModel,PupilViewModel and SubjectViewModel has all Properties, Commands(Add/Delete). My Question: How can I set these 3 ViewModels as DataContext to my ONE SchoolclassAdministration.xaml UserControl I have? Before you answer... putting every ViewModel(schoolclass,pupil,subject) in its own UserControl will not help me because then the Master-Detail switching can NOT work anymore. Every related ViewModels need to be put in a related/ONE UserControl. OK now I can`t wait for an answer because that scenario is driving me nuts for weeks.

• Convert ISO-8859-1 to UTF-8

  I have several documents I need to convert from ISO-8859-1 to UTF-8 (without the BOM of course). This is the issue though. I have so many of these documents (it is actually a mix of documents, some UTF-8 and some ISO-8859-1) that I need an automated way of converting them. Unfortunately I only have ActivePerl installed and don't know much about encoding in that language. I may be able to install PHP, but I am not sure as this is not my personal computer. Just so you know, I use Scite or Notepad++, but both do not convert correctly. For example, if I open a document in Czech that contains the character "ž" and go to the "Convert to UTF-8" option in Notepad++, it incorrectly converts it to an unreadable character. There is a way I CAN convert them, but it is tedious. If I open the document with the special characters and copy the document to Windows clipboard, then paste it into a UTF-8 document and save it, it is okay. This is too tedious (opening every file and copying/pasting into a new document) for the amount of documents I have. Any ideas? Thanks!!!

• Permission denied for cvs server via ssh

  I cant create a new project by importing a java project via eclipse onto my cvs server via internet. I created a directory as root called /priv/cvs/. Then i called "cvs -d /priv/cvs/ init". I created a user named cvs and a groups called cvs. The repository is owned by cvs and in group cvs. Then i created a user "ben" and his only group is cvs. I "chrooted" the user "ben" accessing only the cvs functionality by not allowing to access the server via ssh with password, only by using a public key which is added in his home directory on the server in file authorized_keys2. the contect of authorized_keys2 is as follows: no-port-forwarding,no-X11-forwarding,command="/usr/bin/cvs server" ssh-rsa [public_key_content] rsa-key Connecting to the server works pretty fine. Eclipse asks for the passphrase for the private key to connect to the server. Authentication works and eclipse is able to run cvs commands. But when importing my project by using Team-Share Project. I get the error: The server reported an error: Permission denied projectname: cvs server: cannot open /priv/cvs/CVSROOT/config: Permission denied projectname: Cannot access /priv/cvs/CVSROOT The access right for the cvs root (/priv/cvs/) is set to 770. Which means that the owner, which is cvs and the group participants of the group cvs are allowed to read and write. Why do i get Permission denied? When i set the folder to 777, which means read/write to ALL, then it works. But i dont want that. I only want cvs users read/write to this folder? Is there something i misunderstood about access rules?

  I'm having this weird problem, where including the phonegap.js file in my project causes the app to crash on both the android emulator and my phone. I got the latest file from GitHub, so I can't see why this isn't working. This happens even if I try to build the sample project that's included in the PhoneGap download... • DNN: Registered Mark changing to Question Mark

  I am having a problem with registered marks in the HTML module.  We need to use the Registered Trademark symbol (®) but some of them are being changed to question marks.  I can find no ryme or reason behind which change and which remain correct.  I have tried a number of things to fix this issue including the following: Using ® and ® using ® copy and paste of ® in both source and non source and using the "insert special character" from the RTE menu Some of the symbols remain but most revert back to question marks.  If i'm in edit mode, the questions marks change back to the registered mark.  Also sometimes the first time viewing the page not logged in or in view mode, they will look fine. But as soon as I got to edit mode or a new page then go back, they change back to question marks.  I am out of idea as to why this is happening. • How do you prove your cleverness and programming skills?

  Lately, there were a lot of questions related to career planning and how to decide which languages to learn, how to learn new languages and so on. But I was thinking about a way, how do you will proof later that you're really learned something. Ok you can mentione it in your application for a job or in the interview, but by just stating that I was learning e.g. C++ at home, I don't think this will really be very sucessful. So some suggested to create something (homepage, application, whatsoever) to prove that you also can use these skills in practice. But still I'm not really sure if this will provide any benefit, because it would require a very special project to show all your skills and I don't think you can easily invent such a project (that sould also be useful). Others suggested to solve for example the Project Euler questions but still I'm not sure how this will be useful in career-planning. Are you going to mention at your job interview that you solved all this question in the company's favorite programming language?? :D I can't imagine. The reason why I'm asking is that I have some spare time and I would really like to learn some new programming languages (C++ and/or Python if this matters) and I'm looking for a smart way to do is while concurrently assure that it will be useful in my future career. (there are 3-4 companies id like to try to get a job andIi know all of them are using mainly C++/Pyhton...)

I just want the DataGridView on my Windows form to submit any changes made to it to the database when the user clicks the "Save" button.   Hi, I have a strange issue (at least for me :)) with the MySQL's locking facility. I have a table: Create Table: CREATE TABLE test ( id int(11) NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, PRIMARY KEY (id) ) ENGINE=InnoDB AUTO_INCREMENT=13 DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1 With this data: +----+ | id | +----+ | 3 | | 4 | | 5 | | 6 | | 7 | | 8 | | 10 | | 11 | | 12 | +----+ Now I have 2 clients with these commands executed at the beginning: set autocommit=0; set session transaction isolation level serializable; begin; Now the most interesting part. The first client executes this query: (makes an intent to insert a row with id equal to 9) SELECT * from test where id = 9 FOR UPDATE; Empty set (0.00 sec) Then the second client does the same: SELECT * from test where id = 9 FOR UPDATE; Empty set (0.00 sec) My question is: Why the second client does not block ? An exclusive gap lock should have been set by the first query because FOR UPDATE have been used and the second client should block. If I am wrong, could somebody tell me how to do it correctly ? • C: Running Unix configure file in Windows

  I would like to port a few applications that I use on Linux to Windows. In particular I have been working on wdiff. A program that compares the differences word by word of two files. Currently I have been able to successfully compile the program on windows through Cygwin. However, I would like to run the program natively on Windows similar to the Project: UnixUtils. How would I go about porting unix utilities on a windows environment? My possible guess it to manually create the ./configure file so that I can create a proper makefile. Am I on the right track? Has anyone had experience porting GNU software to windows? Update: I've compiled it on Code::Blocks and I get two errors: wdiff.c|226|error: `SIGPIPE' undeclared (first use in this function) readpipe.c:71: undefined reference to `_pipe' readpipe.c:74: undefined reference to `_fork This is a linux signal that is not supported by windows... equvilancy? wdiff.c|1198|error: `PRODUCT' undeclared (first use in this function)| this is in the configure.in file... hardcode would probably be the fastest solution... Outcome: MSYS took care of the configure problems, however MinGW couldnt solve the posix issues. I attempt to utilize pthreads as recommended by mrjoltcola. However, after several hours I couldnt get it to compile nor link using the provided libraries. I think if this had worked it would have been the solution I was after.   Another one I can't find an answer for, and it feels like I've gone mad. I have a BASH script using a for loop to run a complex command (many protein sequence alignments) on a lot of files (~5000). The loop produces statements that will execute when given alone (i.e. copy-pasted from the error message to the command prompt), but which return "no such file or directory" inside the loop.   I want to be able to create a UIButton with an oversized responsive area. I know that one way to do that is to override the hitTest method in a subclass, but how do I instantiate my custom button object in the first place? [OversizedButton buttonWithType: UIButtonTypeDetailDisclosure]; doesn't work out of the box because buttonWithType returns a UIButton, not an OversizedButton. So it seems like I need to override the buttonWithType method as well. I ran the test and it failed. I know that that is what it's supposed to happen but I was left wondering if isn't there a way to launch an exception or throw in a message when trying to run the method params. Also, if I want to run this Generate() method 10 times with different values (let's say, from 1 to 10), will I have to make 10 mock setups or something, or is there a special method for it?   I have a queatoin about IloLPMatrix and addGe. I was trying to follow the example of AdMIPex5.java to generate user defined cutting planes based on the solution to the LP relaxation. The difference is that eh initial MIP model is not read in from a mps file, but set up in the code using methods like addGe, addLe etc. I think this is why I ran into problems while copying the exampe to do the following. IloLPMatrix lp = (IloLPMatrix)cplex.LPMatrixIterator().next(); lp from the above line turns to be NULL. I am wondering 1. What is the relationship between IloLPMatrix and the addLe, addGe commands? I tried to addLPMatrix() to the model, and then used model.addGe methods. but the LPMatrix seems to be empty still. How do I populate the IloLPMatrix of the moel according to the value that I had set up using addGe and addLe. Is the a method to this easily, or do I have to set them up row by row myself? I was doing this to get the number of variables and their values by doing lp.getNumVars(). Is there other methods that I can use to get the number of variables and their values wihout doing these, since my system is set up by addLe, addGe etc? Thanks a lot for your help on this.

  Overview: I'm interested in learning more about the .NET4 "In-Process Side-by-Side Execution" of assemblies, and need additional information to help me demystify it. Motivation: The application in question is built against .NET2, and uses two third-party libraries that also work against .NET2. The application is deployed (via file copy) to client machines in a virtual environment that includes .NET2. Not my architecture, please bear with me. Goal: To see if it's possible to rebuild the application assemblies (or a subset) against .NET4, and ship the application as before, without changing the third-party libraries and including the .NET4 Client Profile (as described here) in the deployment. Steps Taken: The following articles were read, but didn't quite provide me enough information: In-Process Side-by-Side Execution: Browsed this article, and Scenario Two is the closest it comes to describing something that resembles my situation, but doesn't really cover it with any depth. ASP.NET Side-by-Side Execution Overview: This article covers a web application, but I'm dealing with a client WinForms application. CLR Team Blog: In-Process Side-by-Side: This is useful to explain how plug-ins to host processes function under .NET4, but I don't know if this applies to the third-party libraries. Further Steps: I'm also unclear on how to proceed upgrading a single .NET2 assembly to .NET4, with the overall application remaining in .NET2 (i.e. how to configure the solution/project files, if any special code needs to be included, etc.).
