• What is the behavior of a WPF 4 ControlStoryboardAction trigger?

  Hi all! I have a question that's been bugging me for a while: I have a lengthy IO operation which I invoke asynchronously, and I want my UI to show a blinking text to tell the users that the data is loading. I have an IsLoading boolean property in my ViewModel, and I used a ControlStoryboardAction to kickoff the blinking animation, which is set to repeat forever. For my ControlStoryboardAction trigger, I configured a data trigger to see if IsLoading is true, and start my storyboard if true. My problem is, when my IO operation returns, and I set IsLoading back to false, the animation continues to play. I thought once the trigger condition evaluated to false, it would stop the animation? I then added a second ControlStoryboardAction to stop the animation if IsLoading evaluted to false, but this didn't have any effect. The animation continued to play after IsLoading was false. Can anyone explain to me how trigger works in ControlStoryboardAction? In normal data triggers in WPF, once the condition evaluated to false, the property would be set back to its original state. It seems triggers in WPF actions don't work the same way? Thanks in advance for your help!

  I will shamelessly state that I have little experience with Log4Net... I only just installed it, but it won't capture log events from Quartz.net, which is a scheduling library. Apparently Quartz.net uses Commons Logging and that needs to be configured to point to my Log4Net settings. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work. • How to implement Master-Detail with Multi-Selection in WPF?

  Hi, I plan to create a typical Master-Detail scenario, i.e. a collection of items displayed in a ListView via DataBinding to an ICollectionView, and details about the selected item in a separate group of controls (TextBoxes, NumUpDowns...). No problem so far, actually I have already implemented a pretty similar scenario in an older project. However, it should be possible to select multiple items in the ListView and get the appropriate shared values displayed in the detail view. This means, if all selected items have the same value for a property, this value should be displayed in the detail view. If they do not share the same value, the corresponding control should provide some visual clue for the user indicating this, and no value should be displayed (or an "undefined" state in a CheckBox for example). Now, if the user edits the value, this change should be applied to all selected items. Further requirements are: MVVM compatibility (i.e. not too much code-behind) Extendability (new properties/types can be added later on) Does anyone have experience with such a scenario? Actually, I think this should be a very common scenario. However, I could not find any details on that topic anywhere. Thanks! gehho. PS: In the older project mentioned above, I had a solution using a subclass of the ViewModel which handles the special case of multi-selection. It checked all selected items for equality and returned the appropriate values. However, this approach had some drawbacks and somehow seemed like a hack because (besides other smelly things) it was necessary to break the synchronization between the ListView and the detail view and handle it manually.

• Strange ng-model behavior inside ng-repeat

I'm positive that filter.value is defined and available on the scope even though Angular thinks it's not for some reason. I'm not quite sure what I'm doing wrong. Any help is much appreciated.

• Programming tips for writing document editors?

  I'm asking this because I'm in the process of writing two such editors for my Mega Man engine, one a tileset editor, and another a level editor. When I say document editor, I mean the superset application type for things like image editors and text editors. All of these share things like toolbars, menu options, and in the case of image editors, and my apps, tool panes. We all know there's tons of advice out there for interface design in these apps, but I'm wondering about programming advice. Specifically, I'm doubting my code designs with the following things: Many menu options toggle various behaviors. What's the proper way to reliably tie the checked state of the option with the status of the behavior? Sometimes it's more complicated, like options being disabled when there's no document loaded. More and more consensus seems to be against using MDI, but how should I control tool panes? For example, I can't figure out how to get the panels to minimize and maximize along with the main window, like Photoshop does. When tool panels are responsible for a particular part of the document, who actually owns that thing? The main window, or the panel class? How do you do communication between the tool panels and the main window? Currently mine is all event based but it seems like there could be a better way. This seems to be a common class of gui application, but I've never seen specific pointers on code design for them. Could you please offer whatever advice or experience you have for writing them?

• SQLite on iPhone - Techniques for tracking down multithreading-related bugs

  Hey guys, I'm working with an Objective-C wrapper around SQLite that I didn't write, and documentation is sparse... It's not FMDB. The people writing this wrapper weren't aware of FMDB when writing this code. It seems that the code is suffering from a bug where database connections are being accessed from multiple threads -- which according to the SQLite documentation won't work if the if SQLite is compiled with SQLITE_THREADSAFE 2. I have tested the libsqlite3.dylib provided as part of the iPhone SDK and seen that it is compiled in this manner, using the sqlite_threadsafe() routine. Using the provided sqlite library, the code regularly hits SQLITE_BUSY and SQLITE_LOCKED return codes when performing routines. To combat this, I added some code to wait a couple of milliseconds and try again, with a maximum retry count of 50. The code didn't contain any retry logic prior to this. Now when a sqlite call returns SQLITE_BUSY or SQLITE_LOCKED, the retry loop is invoked and the retry returns SQLITE_MISUSE. Not good. Grasping at straws, I replaced the provided sqlite library with a version compiled by myself setting SQLITE_THREADSAFE to 1 - which according to the documentation means sqlite is safe to be used in a multithreaded environment, effectively serialising all of the operations. It incurs a performance hit, that which I haven't measured, but it ridded the app of the SQLITE_MISUSE happening and seemed to not need the retry logic as it never hit a busy or locked state. What I would rather do is fix the problem of accessing a single db connection from multiple threads, but I can't for the life of me find where it's occurring. So if anyone has any tips on locating multithreaded bugs I would be extremely appreciative. Thanks in advance.

• Android Loading listview items from service results in hang

  Hello, In my Android application, I have a ListActivity. This ListActivity uses a SimpleAdapter that I fill with items from my service. See my onCreate: public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); fillDataUsingCodeAbove(); } The reason I want this to run in the UI thread is that if you have a list item selected, or you have scrolled to a certain position in the ListView, and you rotate the device or take out the keyboard or something (to trigger a configuration change) when my activity is restarted, Android will try to restore the state right after onCreate. But, if I run it in a separate thread, it will not. Also there is a cool fadein animation too :) The problem I am having with running it in the UI thread is that when I try to bind to the service, that service bind request gets put onto the message queue. But then when I go into my loop, I stop the message queue from looping. So my program hangs, because it's waiting for the service to get bound, and the service won't get bound until the loop ends. I have thought of putting Looper.loop() inside my loop, but that just hangs it at Looper.loop() (I don't know why.) Sorry for such a long question, Isaac Waller

• Mouse bugginess - SWFObject, Firefox 3 for Mac, and Flash

  I'm pulling my hair out over a problem I'm encountering on Firefox 3.5 & 3.6 on OS X. I'm using SWFobject to embed an AmMap of the US, which has rollover tooltips for various states. The rollovers are working fine in every other browser I've tested, but they're very buggy on FF for Mac--most of the time they don't show up at all, but if I persistently click a state that's supposed to have a hover event, I might catch a glimpse of the tooltip. Here's the code for the SWFObject embed (incidentally, this isn't being done in the document head due to templating reasons). The reason that the SWFObject initialization is wrapped in Jquery's document.ready handler is that the swf wasn't even appearing in FF 3.5.9 for mac until I added that in: $(document).ready(function() { var params = { quality: "high", scale: "noscale", allowscriptaccess: "always", allowfullscreen: "true", bgcolor: "#FFFFFF", base:"/<?php print LANG .   As a student who's done an internship at a Silicon Valley company(non-financial), I'm curious to know what it's like working for a financial company doing software development. I'd expect the hours to be longer, and the pay to be higher. Specifically, I have the following questions: What's the work/life balance really like? Are you expected to work 80 hours a week most weeks? For those who have worked in non-financial software engineering jobs, how does being a financial software engineer compare in terms of work/life balance? How much does it pay? I'm curious as to starting(i.e. just got a BS) pay, as well as "top out" pay. (I'd prefer concrete numbers - ballpark is fine). Also, bonuses would be useful information. What jobs do financial programmers typically have? Are most just general software engineers, or do people typically have very specialized(i.e. AI or systems) backgrounds? Also, do most programmers have PhDs? Are programmers typically required to be at work, or are financial companies generally flexible about letting programmers work from home? When at work, do programmers have to dress formally? What are the technology environments like? Are finance companies using state-of-the-art hardware and software, or are they generally more conservative in upgrading their equipment? What programming languages are typically used? If VBA(shudder) is used, is it a large part of a finance company's workflow? If you could turn back the clock, would you still be a financial programmer? I'm going to keep this post open a little bit longer to get some more responses.

• mercurial: how to synchronize mq patches from a master repo as mq patches to a set of clone repos

  I have to run a dozen of different build tests on a code base maintained in a mercurial repository. I don't want to run serially these tests on same repository because they modify a set of common files and I want to run them in parallel on different machines. Also, after all tests are run I want to have access to latest test results from those test work areas. Currently I'm cloning the master repository a dozen of times and run in each clone one different test. Before each test execution I do a pull/update/purge preparation sequence in order to start the test on latest clean state. That's good for me. I'm also preparing new changes using mq extension that I would test on all clones as above before committing them. For testing some ready candidate mq patches I want somehow to deploy/synchronize them to be available in test clones and apply those ready for testing using some guard before running the test. Did anybody do this synchronization before? What's the most simple way to do it? Do I need to have versioned mq patches for that?

• Git checkout doesn't change anything, and it's getting very frustrating

  I really like git. At least, I like the idea of git. Being able to checkout my master project as a separate branch where I can change whatever I want without risk of screwing everything else up is awesome. But it's not working. Every time I checkout a branch to another branch, make changes to the one branch, and then checkout the original branch, I still have all the files and changes that happened in the other branch. This is getting extremely frustrating. I've read that this can happen when you have files open in the IDE while doing this, but I've been pretty careful about that and both closed the files in the IDE, closed the IDE, and shut down my rails server before switching branches, and this still happens. Also, running 'git clean -f' either deletes everything that happened after some arbitrary commit (and randomly, at that), or, as in the latest case, didn't change anything back to its original state. I thought I was using git correctly, but at this point, I'm at my wit's end here. I'm trying to work with a bunch of experimental code using a stable version of my project, but I keep having to manually track down and fix all the changes I made. Any ideas or suggestions? git checkout -b photo_tagging git branch # to make sure it's right # make a bunch of changes, creations, etc git status # see what's changed since before git add . # approve of the changes, I guess, since if I do git commit after this, it says no changes git commit -m 'these are changes I made' git checkout master git branch #=> *master # look at files, tags_controller is still there, added in photo_tagging # and code added in photo_tagging branch are still there in *master This seems to happen whether I do a commit or not on the branch.

• Thumbnails fadein fadeout specific div fade issues

  I am using this code to hide and show a div based on which thumbnail you rollover; $(document).ready(function(){ $('div.infodiv').hide(); $(".website_thumbs a").hover( function(){ var name = $(this).attr("name"); $(".infodiv").stop(); $("."+name).fadeIn(); }, function(){ var name = $(this).attr("name"); $("."+name).fadeTo(7000,1).fadeOut(); }); }); The script gets the name attribute from the thumbnail and displays the div with the corresponding class. Each div shares the .infodiv class but also has a class unique to each thumbnail. The functionality is basically where I want it but when you scroll over the thumbnails fast some of the divs get stuck in a kind of half faded-in state and stop working unless i roll over them once - then they slow fade in and they are usable again. I am a bit new to jQuery and would appreciate any help.

• Efficient cron job utilizing Zend_Mail_Storage_Imap.

  I'm new to the IMAP protocol and Zend_Mail_Storage and I'm writing a small php script for a cron job that should regularly poll an IMAP account and check for new messages, and send an e-mail if new messages have arrived. As you can imagine, I want to only poll the IMAP account for relevant messages, and I only want to send a new e-mail if new messages have arrived since the last polled new message. So I thought of keeping track of the last message I polled with some unique identifier for a message. But I'm a bit uncertain about whether the methods I want to utilize for this do what I expect them to do though. So my questions are: Does the iterator position of Zend_Mail_Storage_Imap actually resemble some IMAP unique identifier for messages, or is it simply only and internal position of Zend_Mail_Storage_Abstract? For instance, if I tell it to seek() to message 5 (which I stored from an earlier session) will it indeed seek to the appropriate message on the IMAP server, even if for instance messages have been deleted since last session? Would keeping track of this latest polled message id in a file suffice for a cron job that, say, polls the account every 5 or 10 minutes? Or is this too naive, and should I be using a database for instance. Or is there maybe a much easier way to keep track of such state with Zend_Mail_Storage_Abstract? Also, do I need to poll every IMAP folder? Or is everything accumulated when I poll INBOX? If you could shed some light on any of these matters, I'ld appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

• Using $.get with jquery validation

  I'm trying to use the Jquery builtin validator on my page. The issue is that I have certain fields that only are required if the JobID (entered into another field) does not already exist in our database. I have a simple service which simply takes JobID and returns True or False based on whether the JobID exists, but I can't seem to get this information where I want it. • flash as3 document class and event listeners

  I think i have this document class concept entirly wrong now, i was wondering if someone mind explaining it.. I assumed that the above class would be instantiated within the first frame on scene one of a movie. I also assumed that when changing scenes the state of the class would remain constant so any event listeners would still be running.. Scene 1: I have a movieclip named ui_mc, that has a button in for muting sound. Scene 2: I have the same movie clip with the same button. Now the eventListener picks it up in the first scene, however it does not in the second. I am wondering for every scene do the event listeners need to be resetup? If that is the case if their an event listener to listen for the change in scene, so i can set them back up again lol.. • What is the exact difference between MEM_RESERVE and MEM_COMMIT states?

  As I understand it MEM_RESERVE is actually 'free' memory, ie available to be used by my process, but just hasn't been allocated yet? Or it was previously allocated, but had since been freed? Specifically, see in my !address output below how I am nearly out of virtual address space (99900 KB free, 2307872 as MEM_PRIVATE. But the states shows that 44.75% of that is actually MEM_RESERVE.
