• Basic Objective-C syntax: "%@"?

  Hi, I'm working through the Stanford iPhone podcasts and have some basic questions. The first: why is there no easy string concatenation? (or am I just missing it?) I needed help with the NSLog below, and have no idea what it's currently doing (the %@ part). Do you just substitute those in wherever you need concatenation, and then comma separate the values at the end? NSString *path = @"~"; NSString *absolutePath = [path stringByExpandingTildeInPath]; NSLog(@"My home folder is at '%@'", absolutePath); whereas with any other programing language I'd have done it like this: NSLog(@"My home folder is at " + absolutePath); Thanks!   I am trying to understand how to use reference parameters. There are several examples in my text, however they are too complicated for me to understand why and how to use them. Could anyone give me the MOST basic example of how/why to use one, and perhaps the difference with or without it (what would happen if you didn't attach the '&'). for example, if I've created a function: int doSomething(int& a, int& b), what would be the consequences of not putting in that '&.' I understand that reference variables are used in order to change a formal-reference, which then allows a two-way exchange of parameters. However, that is the extent of my knowledge, and a more concrete example would be of much help. Thank you.

• Is 'bool' a basic datatype in C++ ?

  I got this doubt while writing some code. Is 'bool' a basic datatype defined in the C++ standard or is it some sort of extension provided by the compiler ? I got this doubt because Win32 has 'BOOL' which is nothing but a typedef of long. Also what happens if I do something like this: int i = true; Is it "always" guaranteed that variable i will have value 1 or is it again depends on the compiler I am using ? Further for some Win32 APIs which accept BOOL as the parameter what happens if I pass bool variable?

  Hi guys, I have a website that has around 10 pages. Only one of those pages uses Zend (to integrate with Google gData). Right now, it's just all coded into that one page, but I'm wanting to learn how to use Zend Framework. How do you handle basic-relatively static php pages within Zend Framework? Do you just stick the whole individual pages into their own respective views and then have to common stuff in the layout, and not worry about a model and controller for those pages? in general, is MVC accepted and appropriate technology for general "web-design" work?

  I will be writing my first daemon in php and I have a couple really basic questions that I need help with. 1) What packages need to be installed on my linux server and Does anything in PHP need to be enabled?   I have an application with set limits on subscription attributes i/e a user can have five projects for subscription A but have ten for subscription B At present I run a check on there current usage when linking to the create action and if they are over there limit I do not display the link to create a new project. On the view (for the new project ) I again run the check (in a helper) to see if they can create a new project and if they are not I display a message stating so and a little upgrade link. Is this a secure method of stopping a user bypassing there subscription attribute limitations ? What about direct PUT requests etc ?

  I have a set of tables to show the relationship between organziations and supporters below. Although I have done some basic mySQL querries, I know very little about database 'design'. I plan to querry the database for: -a list of contributors to a specific organization... or, -a list of organizations that a specific suporter supports. The database tables for organiations and contributors may have other columns in the future and recieve a lesser amount of querries based on that information. • How to define large list of strings in Visual Basic

  I'm writing a macro in Visual Basic for PowerPoint 2010. I'd like to initialize a really big list of strings like: big_ol_array = Array( _ "string1", _ "string2", _ "string3", _ "string4" , _ ..... "string9999" _ ) ...but I get the "Too many line continuations" error in the editor. When I try to just initialize the big array with no line breaks, the VB editor can't handle such a long line (1000+) characters. Does anyone know a good way to initialize a huge list of strings in VB? Thanks in advance!

• Visual C# GUI Designer - Recommended way of removing generated event handler-code & basic tutorial

  Hi, I'm new to the Visual C# designer so these are general and pretty basic question on how to work with the designer. When we for instance add a label to a form and then double-click on it in the Visual C# designer (I'm using Microsoft Visual C# 2008 Express Edition), the following things happen: The designer generates code within Form1.Designer.cs (assume default names for simplicity) to add the label, then with the double-click it will add the event handler label1_Click to the label within Form1.Designer.cs, using the following code this.label1.Click += new System.EventHandler(this.label1_Click); and it adds the event handler method to Form1.cs private void label1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { } If I now remove the label only the code within Form1.Designer.cs will be removed but the label1_Click method will stay within Form1.cs even if it isn't used by anything else. But if I'm using reset within Properties-Events for the Click-event from within the designer even the label1_Click method in Form1.cs will be removed. 1.) Isn't that a little inconsistent behavior? 2.) What is the recommended way of removing such generated event handler-code? 3.) What is the best "mental approach"/best practice for using the designer? I would approach it by mental separation in the way that Form1.cs is 100% my responsibility and that on the other hand I'm not touching the code in Form1.Designer.cs at all. Does that make sense or not? Since sometimes the designer removes sth. from Form1.cs I'm not sure about this. 4.) Can you recommend a simple designer tutorial that assumes no Visual C# designer knowledge but expects/doesn't explain C#. • java RMI newbie-- some basic questions about SSL and auth/.rate limiting an RMI service

  I am trying to work to secure a java based RMI service using SSL. I have some basic questions about the capabilities of using SSL. Specifically, from what I understand, the client and server connecting via SSL will need to have appropriate credential certificates in both client and server, for a client to be granted access to the server. Am I correct in my understanding? Also, what I want to know is, can a person who is already using my RMI service and has access to a client machine , make a copy of the certificate in the client machine to other client machines-- and then invoke my RMI service from those other machines as well? How do I prevent such a situation from occurring? I mean, in a REST API you can use OAuth authentication, can we have some kind of authentication in an RMI Service? Also, can I possibly limit usage of the RMI service? For eg, a specific client may be allowed to make only 5000 calls per day to my RMI service, and if he makes more calls the calls occurring after the 5000 calls limit are all denied? How do I do such rate limiting and/or authentication for my RMI Service?

• Authenticating to Google Search Appliance using Basic HTTP auth and ASP.NET (VB)

  I've run into a snag though which has to do with authentication between the Google Search Appliance and ASP. Normally, when asking for secure pages from the search appliance, the search appliance asks for credentials, then uses these credentials to try and access the secure results. If this attempt is successful, the page shows up in the results list. Since ASP is contacting the search appliance on the client's behalf, it will need to collect credentials and pass them along to the search appliance. I have tried a couple of different documented ways of accomplishing this, but they don't seem to work. This is the error that I have received when I try to read a simple Excel file into MATLAB. This is a snapshot of the spreadsheet I would like to load in. Could guide me the basic know-how to extract these data? I have looked through the other questions pertaining to reading Excel files into MATLAB, but I am still very confused. I ultimately wish to extract the file below for my project using the same method. The second image shows the data I have to extract which I could not do. Its file type seems to be different, it is comma separated values file which is not xls. Hence, I am also confuse about whether different file type prevents extraction of data.   Scenario: I have a windows form that holds a DataGridWiew with 3 pre-defined columns. I have 3 variables declared outside the function and assigned to inside the function. I have a function that enumerates stuff and puts it in the 3 columns, line by line: string VARIABLE1; string VARIABLE2; string VARIABLE3; private void FunctionEnumerateStuff() { foreach (StuffObject STUFF in StuffCollection) { VARIABLE1 = STUFF.SubStuff1.ToString(); VARIABLE2 = STUFF.SubStuff2.ToString(); VARIABLE3 = STUFF.SubStuff3.ToString(); DatagridWiew1.Rows.Add(VALUE1, VALUE2, VALUE3); } } What I want to do, is to execute this function from a BackGroundWorker process, so that the GUI of the application will be smooth and responsive. I have read up on backgroundworkers but I am having trouble relating, because all examples seems to be of entirely different scenarios and most of them are overwelmingly complex. San some helpful pedagogic soul help me and others with a very basic example of how to get this to work in the simplest way possible. Thanks.

• Ruby Gem Install question + answer(on windows vista Home Basic environment)

  Recently I am having problems with installing rcov gem on my windows (vista Home Basic environment), so after googling I found one solution and that is gem install rcov -v 0.8.1.1.0 #version that installs without errors gem update rcov #update to the latest version, in my case rcov-0.8.1.2.0-x86-mswin32 But this solution didn't worked on my colleague's system (windows xp) and after that we came to know about RubyInstaller devkit for winddows But that dev kit is not working on my vista, when I tried gem install rcov in my command prompt, it game me this error, C:\Users\Vamsi>gem install rcov Building native extensions. This could take a while... ERROR: Error installing rcov: ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension.ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension. D:/Spritle/Programs/Ruby/bin/ruby.exe extconf.rb creating Makefile nmake 'nmake' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Gem files will remain installed in D:/Spritle/Programs/Ruby/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/ge ms/rcov-0.9.8 for inspection. Results logged to D:/Spritle/Programs/Ruby/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/rcov-0.9.8/ext /rcovrt/gem_make.out So after that my colleague tried to install nmake as well but it was throwing some other error. Can some one suggest a better solution for solving this problems for all windows environments? I am aware of cygwin for windows but I am not sure that is an 100% solution either.
