  I have a native query that does a batch insert into a MySQL database: String sql = "insert into t1 (a, b) select x, y from t2 where x = 'foo'"; EntityTransaction tx = entityManager.getTransaction(); try { tx.begin(); int rowCount = entityManager.createNativeQuery(sql).executeUpdate(); tx.commit(); return rowCount; } catch(Exception ex) { tx.rollback(); log.error(...); } This query causes a deadlock: while it reads from t2 with insert .. select, another process tries to insert a row into t2. I don't care about the consistency of reads from t2 when doing an insert .. select and want to set the transaction isolation level to READ_UNCOMMITTED. How do I go about setting it in JPA backed by Hibernate?

  I have been succesfully using the command line database deployment tool VSDBCMD on my dev and test environments but the tool fails in our integration environmrnt. I am using the VS 2010 version of the tool. The servers have all of the prerequisites including: .net 4.0 sql server compact edition 3.5 sp1 (as well as the full edition of 2008) sql server 2008 server management objects sql server 2008 native client sql server system clr types msxml 6 all of the dependent DLLs included in: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition\v3.5\desktop*.dll C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition\v3.5*.dll C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\VSTSDB\Deploy**. The only reference to this error that I have been able to find has to do with a bug in the VS 2008 edition when the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0 key is missing. In my case the 10.0 version of the key exists. Has anyone else encountered this?

• Message pump in C# Windows service

  Hello, I have a Windows Service written in C# that handles all of our external hardware I/O for a kiosk application. One of our new devices is a USB device that comes with an API in a native DLL. I have a proper P/Invoke wrapper class created. However, this API must be initialized with an HWnd to a windows application because it uses the message pump to raise asynchronous events. Besides putting in a request to the hardware manufacturer to provide us with an API that does not depend on a Windows message pump, is there any way to manually instantiate a message pump in a new thread in my Windows Service that I can pass into this API? Do I actually have to create a full Application class, or is there a lower level .NET class that encapsulates a message pump? Thanks

• Snow Leopard & Ruby on Rails - SQLite3 issue

  I just upgraded to snow leopard. • Android - Read PNG image without alpha and decode as ARGB_8888 Android

  I try to read an image from sdcard (in emulator) and then create a Bitmap image with the "BitmapFactory.decodeByteArray" method. I set the options: options.inPrefferedConfig = Bitmap.Config.ARGB_8888 options.inDither = false Then I extract the pixels into a ByteBuffer. ByteBuffer buffer = ByteBuffer.allocateDirect(width*height*4) bitmap.copyPixelsToBuffer(buffer) I use this ByteBuffer then in the JNI to convert it into RGB format and want to calculate on it. But always I get false data - I test without modifying the ByteBuffer. Only thing I do is to put it into the native method into JNI. Then cast it into a unsigned char* and convert it back into a ByteBuffer before returning it back to Java. Before displaying the image I get data back with bitmap.copyPixelsFromBuffer( buffer ) But then it has wrong data in it. My Question is if this is because the image is internally converted into RGB 565 or what is wrong here? May anybody has an idea, it would be great!

• Using IIS Application Request Routing (ARR) for ASP.NET MVC

  I use a simple ASP.NET MVC web (the template you use when you create a new site) and the web works as expected in my live environment. I now try to use IIS Application Request Routing version 2. I have a rule that send all reuqests to a different server that match a rule. The settings are a bit like this: http://blogs.iis.net/wonyoo/archive/2008/07/09/application-request-routing-arr-as-a-reverse-proxy.aspx My rule is just a bit different it is /shop(.*). Only requests that contain shop are send to a different server. I have to use rewrite, not redirect (The same as in the Picture) This works as long as the web the original requests go to is no ASP.NET MVC web. I tried to use a plain htm file in the webfolder and it worked. If put a compiled ASP.NET application into the webfolder it worked. But as soon as I put an ASP.NET MVC web into the folder, request arr served by this application. My understanding is that the ARR should kick in before the web application gets the chance to handle the request. Did anybody use ARR sucessfully as a reverse proxy for a ASP.NET MVC web? EDIT Here is the resulting web config when the rewrite roule is entered.   Hi All! I'm having an issue interacting between Matlab and .NET. I've managed to call .NET methods from Matlab code and vice versa. However, if I call a .NET method that, in turn, instantiates a Matlab object, it crashes (with a type initialization exception). Think about this scenario: a .NET assembly is interacting with a Matlab dll that was deployed for .NET (not native) by Matlab's deploytool. Now, when I'm loading the above .NET dll in a Matlab program everything is ok until I run a method that utilizes the other Matlab dll. Only then everything crashes. The exact message is: Warning: Cannot initialize MATLAB Compiler-generated software component in MATLAB. MATLAB Compiler-generated software components cannot be used from within MATLAB.   We are rolling out a large deployment of SQL Server Reporting Services Reports and our platform is SQL Server 2005 so our Report Server is version 2005 running in Native mode. Our web application uses server reports rendered in the Report Viewer 9.0 control. We want to be able to use local reports based on the 2008 RDL spec to create some dashboard applications. We also would like to use the new report viewer 10.0 to viewer these reports. Is there a way to run these both Side-By-Side in the same project? If so how would we go about that? Create a custom server control?

  In many of my answers I repeatedly urge users not to use JavaScript libraries like jQuery. I even wrote a blog post about the problems that using a library create. Some of these problems include holding back native standards development, keeping users comfortably using IE, and abstracting the developer from real JavaScript. If a site doesn't require IE as part of its audience, then how are libraries useful? The other popular browsers share extremely similar implementations and work well with things like JavaScript 1.6 arrays and AJAX. This is not a troll question, I'm truly wondering what they're useful for.

  Hi, I'm trying to work on a new project parsing some JSON data for a Silverlight 4 project (specifically created as a "Silverlight Business Application - Visual C#" project) using C# in Visual Studio 2010, and I can't find how to include the references to have parsers and native object support for JSON data. As far as I know my development tools are up to date (checked MS update). I know that I can probably just write my own parser but that seems like re-inventing the wheel. • Embedding an offline Dashcode application in a UIWebView in an iPhone application

  In order words, can anyone tell me the basics of how to create a "hybrid" iPhone application? I want to load the web content (the Dashcode app itself) from the native application's application bundle. I've gotten this to partially work, but some content won't display and it otherwise seems like Dashcode is assuming a certain Safari environment or something that I don't seem to have in my UIWebView. Can anyone provide a link to some sample code that embeds a Dashcode project into a cocoa touch Xcode project? (I did search around Google for a bit trying to find something and I failed to come up with anything worthwhile, except for some books that I might eventually buy if the approach seems worthwhile.)

• trying to override getView in a SimpleCursorAdapter gives NullPointerException

  Would very much appreciate any help or hint on were to go next. I'm trying to change the content of a row in ListView programmatically. In one row there are 3 TextView and a ProgressBar. I want to animate the ProgressBar if the 'result' column of the current row is zero. After reading some tutorials and docs, I came to the conclusion that LayoutInflater has to be used and getView() - overriden. Maybe I am wrong on this. If I return row = inflater.inflate(R.layout.row, null); from the function, it gives NullPointerException. • Android daemon process

  Is it possible (without violating any licenses) to write a native C/C++ application on top of the Android OS and make it run as a daemon process? There are already several daemon process' running which one can see with the 'ps' command, the legal part concerns me the most. And also the lack of documentation on how to exactly do this. For the writing part, I guess one could use basic Linux programming concepts, since Android supports at least to some level the standard Posix API. To make it run as the phone boots, some modifications is of course required in init as well. I have no plans to have this app in the Android Market, so installing it manually to the phone is not a problem. As long as it does not require re-compiling the whole OS or kernel. I really appreciate all info on this topic, since there's isn't much available. Thanks.

  Hi, When looking for which version of Delphi 2010 to buy, we found the following limitation on the professional one: Delphi 2010 Professional is designed for developers building high-performance desktop GUI and touch-screen applications with (or without) embedded and local database persistence. What does this really mean? Does this mean that we'll only face this restriction if we choose to use the native vcl components for database access we'll face this restriction. And what if we choose to use ADO components instead of those? In this case, how can Delphi avoid us to access remote database servers? Did anyone here ever tried this? Going even further: if we choose to use a database like Firebird, which is just one file, and used a network mapped drive. Could we be facing the same limitation? Supposing we opt for ADO, what will be the main consequences?

Need it to be open-source, would prefer an MIT or Apache style license over a GPL license. Not opposed to a library that needs bindings to be written, as long as binaries are available for both windows and linux. Options considered: SQLite - has bindings and native implementation, but single-threaded and not all that fast Embedded InnoDB - no .NET bindings i can find and it's GPLv2 Berkley DB - no .NET bindings i can find Tokyo Cabinet - no .NET bindings i can find and problematic to build on windows MadCow Memory-mapped data structures - GPLv2 Is there an option better than the above that i'm missing, or bindings for the above i don't know about?

• Weblogic is slow to start (11mins) under VM (VirtualBox and VMware)

  (SOLVED! BY FAKING SYSTEM RANDOM GENERATOR, SEE BELOW) I'm setting up a VM image for my dev/build team. Inside that VM a Weblogic domain should be running. I use Ububtu server distro, WLS 9.2MP3 + ALSB. Everything works OK, quite fast, but at the start time the WLS stops twice for a measurable amounts of time. Two stops in total amount to about 10 minutes delay. For tasks where deployment requires server restart it's very annoying. :-( Sleeping time is not constant, sometimes the server starts very fast, sometimes so-so, sometimes 10 minutes or more. Interesting that if I press Enter while looking at the stopped server, it wakes up much faster, sometimes after a few seconds. WLST (Weblogic Jython shell) is also hanging for quite a time when executed in VM. It doesn't react to Enter though. Here must be some developers who run WLS with a VM. I wonder if others have the same problem? Was someone able to solve it? I am trying to do something like: @RunWith(PowerMockRunner.class) @PrepareForTest({GalpoQueueConnection.class, ApolloProcUtils.class}) public class GalpoQueueConnectionTest extends TestCase{ @Test public void testNextPNRFromQueueHappyPath() throws Exception { QueueReadBuilder mockBuilder = mock(QueueReadBuilder.class); PowerMockito.whenNew(QueueReadBuilder.class).withArguments(anyString(), anyString(), anyString()).thenReturn(mockBuilder); } } It seems like somehow powermockito is trying to call IMockHandler, and I looked at Mockito 1.8.3 api, and there isn't any. Any suggestions/ clues would be welcome.

• "Executing SQL directly; no cursor" error when using SCOPE_IDENTITY/IDENT_CURRENT

  There wasn't much on google about this error, so I'm askin here. I'm switching a PHP web application from using MySQL to SQL Server 2008 (using ODBC, not php_mssql). Running queries or anything else isn't a problem, but when I try to do scope_identity (or any similar functions), I get the error "Executing SQL directly; no cursor". I'm doing this immediately after an insert, so it should still be in scope. Running the same insert statement then query for the insert ID works fine in SQL Server Management Studio. Here's my code right now (everything else in the database wrapper class works fine for other queries, so I'll assume it isn't relevant right now): function insert_id(){ return $this->query_first("SELECT SCOPE_IDENTITY() as insert_id"); } query_first being a function that returns the first result from the first field of a query (basically the equivalent of execute_scalar() on .net).
