  • jQuery fading in an element - not working exactly as i want it to...

    - by Nike
    Anybody see what's wrong? Doesn't seem to do anything. If i replace $(this, '.inner').stop(true, false).fadeIn(250); with $(.fadeInOnHover .inner').stop(true, false).fadeIn(250); then all the .inner elements on the page will fade in (which isn't really what i want, as i have ~10 of them). I know it's possible to achieve what i want to do, but i don't know how in this case. Thanks in advance :) <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function() { $('.fadeInOnHover .inner').css("display","none"); $('.fadeInOnHover').hover(function() { $(this, '.inner').stop(true, false).fadeIn(250); }).mouseout(function() { $(this, '.inner').stop(true, true).fadeOut(100); }); }); </script>

  • Factory.next not working in FactoryGirl 4.x and Rails 3.0. Anyone know the replacement?

    - by cchapman900
    I'm very new to Rails and am following along in the Ruby on Rails 3 Tutorial book by Michael Hartl and am running into a little bump while using the factory_girl gem. Specifically, I'm not sure how to update the code Factory.next(...) Before coming to this, I did run into a little problem between the older version of FactoryGirl used in the book and the current 4.1 version I'm using now, but was able to resolve it. Specifically, the old way of writing code as user = Factory(:user) needed to be updated to user = FactoryGirl.create(:user) That was fine, but now I'm coming to the code (as written in the book): spec/controllers/users_controler_spec.rb . @users << Factory(:user, :email => Factory.next(:email)) . which I've tried updating to . @users << FactoryGirl.create(:user, :email => FactoryGirl.next(:email)) . but get the error: Failure/Error: @users << FactoryGirl.create(:user, :email => FactoryGirl.next(:email)) NoMethodError: undefined method `next' for FactoryGirl:Module I've tried a few different variations but still can't quite get it. Is the problem I'm having with FactoryGirl and just not using the gem correctly or does it have something to do with the Ruby methods?

  • how is this dropdown working ? on selection it displays another record.

    - by ida
    this website here: http://www.offpricecars.com/inventory2.html?F=C when you select a dropdown the record based on your selection is displayed. ive tried copying it to localhost and it wont work. ive also tryed reading its headers and cant seem to figure out how javascript is making the records display on selection. i do understand that its extension isnt really html and might be another but based on how its operating as a html file i cant seem to find anywhere on how its sending the string to show the records. thanks

  • Two '==' equality operators in same 'if' condition are not working as intended.

    - by Manav MN
    I am trying to establish equality of three equal variables, but the following code is not printing the obvious true answer which it should print. Can someone explain, how the compiler is parsing the given if condition internally? #include<stdio.h> int main() { int i = 123, j = 123, k = 123; if ( i == j == k) printf("Equal\n"); else printf("NOT Equal\n"); return 0; } Output: manav@workstation:~$ gcc -Wall -pedantic calc.c calc.c: In function ‘main’: calc.c:5: warning: suggest parentheses around comparison in operand of ‘==’ manav@workstation:~$ ./a.out NOT Equal manav@workstation:~$ EDIT: Going by the answers given below, is the following statement okay to check above equality? if ( (i==j) == (j==k))

  • Why isn't my algorithm for find the biggest and smallest inputs working?

    - by Matt Ellen
    I have started a new job, and with it comes a new language: Ironpython. Thankfully a good language :D Before starting I got to grips with Python on the whole, but that was only a week's worth of learning. Now I'm writing actual code. I've been charged with writing an algorithm that finds the best input parameter to collect data with. The basic algorithm is (as I've been instructed): Set the input parameter to a good guess Start collecting data When data is available stop collecting find the highest point If the point before this (i.e. for the previous parameter value) was higher and the point before that was lower then we've found the max otherwise the input parameter is increased by the initial guess. goto 2 If the max is found then the min needs to be found. To do this the algorithm carries on increasing the input, but by 1/10 of the max, until the current point is greater than the previous point and the point before that is also greater. Once the min is found then the algorithm stops. Currently I have a simplified data generator outputting the sin of the input, so that I know that the min value should be PI and the max value should be PI/2 The main Python code looks like this (don't worry, this is just for my edification, I don't write real code like this): import sys sys.path.append(r"F:\Programming Source\C#\PythonHelp\PythonHelp\bin\Debug") import clr clr.AddReferenceToFile("PythonHelpClasses.dll") import PythonHelpClasses from PHCStruct import Helper from System import Math helper = Helper() def run(): b = PythonHelpClasses.Executor() a = PythonHelpClasses.HasAnEvent() b.Input = 0.0 helper.__init__() def AnEventHandler(e): b.Stop() h = helper h.lastLastVal, h.lastVal, h.currentVal = h.lastVal, h.currentVal, e.Number if h.lastLastVal < h.lastVal and h.currentVal < h.lastVal and h.NotPast90: h.NotPast90 = False h.bestInput = h.lastInput inputInc = 0.0 if h.NotPast90: inputInc = Math.PI/10.0 else: inputInc = h.bestInput/10.0 if h.lastLastVal > h.lastVal and h.currentVal > h.lastVal and h.NotPast180: h.NotPast180 = False if h.NotPast180: h.lastInput, b.Input = b.Input, b.Input + inputInc b.Start(a) else: print "Best input:", h.bestInput print "Last input:", h.lastInput b.Stop() a.AnEvent += AnEventHandler b.Start(a) PHCStruct.py: class Helper(): def __init__(self): self.currentVal = 0 self.lastVal = 0 self.lastLastVal = 0 self.NotPast90 = True self.NotPast180 = True self.bestInput = 0 self.lastInput = 0 PythonHelpClasses has two small classes I wrote in C# before I realised how to do it in Ironpython. Executor runs a delegate asynchronously while it's running member is true. The important code: public void Start(HasAnEvent hae) { running = true; RunDelegate r = new RunDelegate(hae.UpdateNumber); AsyncCallback ac = new AsyncCallback(UpdateDone); IAsyncResult ar = r.BeginInvoke(Input, ac, null); } public void Stop() { running = false; } public void UpdateDone(IAsyncResult ar) { RunDelegate r = (RunDelegate)((AsyncResult)ar).AsyncDelegate; r.EndInvoke(ar); if (running) { AsyncCallback ac = new AsyncCallback(UpdateDone); IAsyncResult ar2 = r.BeginInvoke(Input, ac, null); } } HasAnEvent has a function that generates the sin of its input and fires an event with that result as its argument. i.e.: public void UpdateNumber(double val) { AnEventArgs e = new AnEventArgs(Math.Sin(val)); System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(1000); if (null != AnEvent) { AnEvent(e); } } The sleep is in there just to slow things down a bit. The problem I am getting is that the algorithm is not coming up with the best input being PI/2 and the final input being PI, but I can't see why. Also the best and final inputs are different each time I run the programme. Can anyone see why? Also when the algorithm terminates the best and final inputs are printed to the screen multiple times, not just once. Can someone explain why?

  • Why aren't min-width and max-width working as I expect?

    - by Nathan Long
    I'm trying to adjust a CSS page layout using min-width and max-width. To simplify the problem, I made this test page. I'm trying it out in the latest versions of Firefox and Chrome with the same results. <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <title>Testing min-width and max-width</title> <style type="text/css"> div{float: left; max-width: 400px; min-width: 200px;} div.a{background: orange;} div.b{background: gray;} </style> </head> <body> <div class="a"> (Giant block of filler text here) </div> <div class="b"> (Giant block of filler text here) </div> </body> </html> Here's what I expect to happen: With the browser maximized, the divs sit side by side, each 400px wide: their maximum width Shrink the browser window, and they both shrink to 200px: their minimum width Further shrinking the browser has no effect on them Here's what actually happens, starting at step 2: Shrink the browser window, and as soon as they can't sit side-by-side at their max width, the second div drops below the first Further shrinking the browser makes them get narrower and narrower, as small as I can make the window So here's are my questions: What does max-width mean if the element will sooner hop down in the layout than go lower than its maximum width? What does min-width mean if the element will happily get narrower than that if the browser window keeps shrinking? Is there any way to achieve what I want: have these elements sit side-by-side, happily shrinking until they reach 200px each, and only then adjust the layout so that the second one drops down? And of course... What am I doing wrong?

  • How can I learn the math necessary for working with computer vision?

    - by Duncan Benoit
    I know that computer vision involves a lot of math, but I need some tips about how programmers gain that knowledge. I've started to use the OpenCV library but I have some major problems in understanding how the math works in the algorithms. In college I have studied some math and we worked with matrices and derivatives, but I didn't pay to much attention to the subject. It seemed to be so difficult and useless from a programmer point of view. I suppose that there has to be some easy way to understand what a second derivative is without calculating an equation. (Derivatives are just an example) Do you have any tips for me about how can i gain such knowledge? A forum, book, link, advice, anything?

  • How do I debug this javascript -- I don't get an error in Firebug but it's not working as expected.

    - by Angela
    I installed the plugin better-edit-in-place (http://github.com/nakajima/better-edit-in-place) but I dont' seem to be able to make it work. The plugin creates javascript, and also automatically creates a rel and class. The expected behavior is to make an edit-in-place, but it currently is not. Nothing happens when I mouse over. When I use firebug, it is rendering the value to be edited correctly: <span rel="/emails/1" id="email_1_days" class="editable">7</span> And it is showing the full javascript which should work on class editable. I didn't copy everything, just the chunks that seemed should be operationable if I have a class name in the DOM. // Editable: Better in-place-editing // http://github.com/nakajima/nakatype/wikis/better-edit-in-place-editable-js var Editable = Class.create({ initialize: function(element, options) { this.element = $(element); Object.extend(this, options); // Set default values for options this.editField = this.editField || {}; this.editField.type = this.editField.type || 'input'; this.onLoading = this.onLoading || Prototype.emptyFunction; this.onComplete = this.onComplete || Prototype.emptyFunction; this.field = this.parseField(); this.value = this.element.innerHTML; this.setupForm(); this.setupBehaviors(); }, // In order to parse the field correctly, it's necessary that the element // you want to edit in place for have an id of (model_name)_(id)_(field_name). // For example, if you want to edit the "caption" field in a "Photo" model, // your id should be something like "photo_#{@photo.id}_caption". // If you want to edit the "comment_body" field in a "MemberBlogPost" model, // it would be: "member_blog_post_#{@member_blog_post.id}_comment_body" parseField: function() { var matches = this.element.id.match(/(.*)_\d*_(.*)/); this.modelName = matches[1]; this.fieldName = matches[2]; if (this.editField.foreignKey) this.fieldName += '_id'; return this.modelName + '[' + this.fieldName + ']'; }, // Create the editing form for the editable and inserts it after the element. // If window._token is defined, then we add a hidden element that contains the // authenticity_token for the AJAX request. setupForm: function() { this.editForm = new Element('form', { 'action': this.element.readAttribute('rel'), 'style':'display:none', 'class':'in-place-editor' }); this.setupInputElement(); if (this.editField.tag != 'select') { this.saveInput = new Element('input', { type:'submit', value: Editable.options.saveText }); if (this.submitButtonClass) this.saveInput.addClassName(this.submitButtonClass); this.cancelLink = new Element('a', { href:'#' }).update(Editable.options.cancelText); if (this.cancelButtonClass) this.cancelLink.addClassName(this.cancelButtonClass); } var methodInput = new Element('input', { type:'hidden', value:'put', name:'_method' }); if (typeof(window._token) != 'undefined') { this.editForm.insert(new Element('input', { type: 'hidden', value: window._token, name: 'authenticity_token' })); } this.editForm.insert(this.editField.element); if (this.editField.type != 'select') { this.editForm.insert(this.saveInput); this.editForm.insert(this.cancelLink); } this.editForm.insert(methodInput); this.element.insert({ after: this.editForm }); }, // Create input element - text input, text area or select box. setupInputElement: function() { this.editField.element = new Element(this.editField.type, { 'name':this.field, 'id':('edit_' + this.element.id) }); if(this.editField['class']) this.editField.element.addClassName(this.editField['class']); if(this.editField.type == 'select') { // Create options var options = this.editField.options.map(function(option) { return new Option(option[0], option[1]); }); // And assign them to select element options.each(function(option, index) { this.editField.element.options[index] = options[index]; }.bind(this)); // Set selected option try { this.editField.element.selectedIndex = $A(this.editField.element.options).find(function(option) { return option.text == this.element.innerHTML; }.bind(this)).index; } catch(e) { this.editField.element.selectedIndex = 0; } // Set event handlers to automaticall submit form when option is changed this.editField.element.observe('blur', this.cancel.bind(this)); this.editField.element.observe('change', this.save.bind(this)); } else { // Copy value of the element to the input this.editField.element.value = this.element.innerHTML; } }, // Sets up event handles for editable. setupBehaviors: function() { this.element.observe('click', this.edit.bindAsEventListener(this)); if (this.saveInput) this.editForm.observe('submit', this.save.bindAsEventListener(this)); if (this.cancelLink) this.cancelLink.observe('click', this.cancel.bindAsEventListener(this)); }, // Event Handler that activates form and hides element. edit: function(event) { this.element.hide(); this.editForm.show(); this.editField.element.activate ?   • Why this base64 function stop working when increasing max length?

    - by flyout
    I am using this class to encode/decode text to base64. It works fine with MAX_LEN up to 512 but if I increase it to 1024 the decode function returns and empty var. This is the function: char* Base64::encode(char *src) { char* ptr = dst+0; unsigned triad; unsigned int d_len = MAX_LEN; memset(dst,'\0', MAX_LEN); unsigned s_len = strlen(src); for (triad = 0; triad < s_len; triad += 3) { unsigned long int sr = 0; unsigned byte; for (byte = 0; (byte<3)&&(triad+byte<s_len); ++byte) { sr <<= 8; sr |= (*(src+triad+byte) & 0xff); } sr <<= (6-((8*byte)%6))%6; // shift left to next 6bit alignment if (d_len < 4) return NULL; // error - dest too short *(ptr+0) = *(ptr+1) = *(ptr+2) = *(ptr+3) = '='; switch(byte) { case 3: *(ptr+3) = base64[sr&0x3f]; sr >>= 6; case 2: *(ptr+2) = base64[sr&0x3f]; sr >>= 6; case 1: *(ptr+1) = base64[sr&0x3f]; sr >>= 6; *(ptr+0) = base64[sr&0x3f]; } ptr += 4; d_len -= 4; } return dst; } Why could be causing this?

    - by eswaran
    Hi all, I am developed an web application in asp.net. In this application I have used jquery ajax for some pages. In this application, when I make two ajax call asynchrounoulsy that would not do as I expceted. what is happening is even the second ajax call finishes i can see the result when the maximum time out ajax call finished. I mean i can see the both results in the same time, not one by one. for an example. I have 3 pages 1) main.aspx - for make two ajax request. 2) totalCount.aspx - to find the total count. (max it takes 7 seconds to return, as corresponding table contains 3 lak records) 3) rowCount.aspx - to find the row details. (max it takes 5 seconds to return result). due to this scene, I have planed to make asyn call in jquery ajax in asp.net. here is my code... function getResult() { getTotalCount(); getRows(); } // it takes max 7 seconds to complete // as it take 7 seconds it should display second.( I mean after the rows dispaying) // but displaying both at the same time after the max time consuming ajax call completed. function getTotalCount() { $.ajax({ type : "POST", async : true, url : "totalCount.aspx?data1=" + document.getElementById("data").value, success : function(responseText) { $("#totalCount").attr("value", responseText); } }) } // it takes max 5 seconds to complete. // after finished, this should display first.( i mean before total count displays) // but displaying both at the same time after the max time consuming ajax call completed. function getRows() { $.ajax({ type : "POST", url : "getrows.aspx?data1=" + document.getElementById("data").value, async : true, success : function(responseText) { $("#getRows").attr("value", responseText); } }); } I would like to know, If there is any possible to make asyn call in jquery ajax in asp.net. I searched in net, I got some points that says we cannot do this in asp.net ref link: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg55125.html if we can do this in asp.net How to do that? thanks r.eswaran.

  • Any way to make this working dual core in C#?

    - by Frantisek
    Hi, I got a piece of code that loops through the array and looks for the similar and same strings in it - marking it whether it's unique or not. loop X array for I ( loop X array for Y ( If X is prefix of Y do. else if x is same length as Y and it's prefix do something. ) Here is the code to finilize everything for I and corresponding (found/not found) matches in Y. ) I'd like to make this for dual-core to multithread it. To my knowledge it is not possible, but it's highly probable that you may have some idea.

  • How do I open a web browser from a .NET Program? Process.Start() isn't working?

    - by Scott Whitlock
    I have a URL and I want to launch it in the default browser. I've tried two methods: Process.Start("http://stackoverflow.com"); ... and the one detailed in this other question using ShellExecute. In both cases I get the error: Windows cannot find 'http://stackoverflow.com'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. It shouldn't be trying to open it as a file though... from what I understand, it should recognize it as a URL and open it in the default browser. What am I missing? By the way: OS = Vista, and .NET = 3.5 EDIT: According to this MS KB article, since Process.Start sets the UseShellExecute by default, it should launch the default browser.

That said, I need to be able to write code on two machines, I'm considering checking out code to a flash thumb drive. Anyone know in advance what I should/shouldn't do to avoid loss of work? Do I need to ensure the drive letter stays the same?

  • Administrators vs Programmers: Who's got more people Interaction / Working hours?

    - by sanksjaya
    Well, I've heard programmers get to interact with other programmers quiet a lot. But, who gets to meet a lot of new people on a daily basis at work without getting the feeling "Goosh! I'm stuck with him/this for another year :(" - Admins or Coders? And what kind of people domain do each get to interact with? Secondly, I've had this myth for a long time that unlike programmers, Network/System/Security Admins get locked-up in a den and juiced up late nights and early mornings. Most of the time they had to slip out of work without being noticed. But recently one of my seniors from my grad school told he had to work late and on weekends for a product release. How true and often does this happen with programmers and admins?

  • Foreign key not working in MySQL: Why can I INSERT a value that's not in the foreign column?

    - by stalepretzel
    I've created a table in MySQL: CREATE TABLE actions ( A_id int NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, type ENUM('rate','report','submit','edit','delete') NOT NULL, Q_id int NOT NULL, U_id int NOT NULL, date DATE NOT NULL, time TIME NOT NULL, rate tinyint(1), PRIMARY KEY (A_id), CONSTRAINT fk_Question FOREIGN KEY (Q_id) REFERENCES questions(P_id), CONSTRAINT fk_User FOREIGN KEY (U_id) REFERENCES users(P_id)); This created the table I wanted just fine (although a "DESCRIBE actions;" command showed me that the foreign keys were keys of type MUL, and I'm not sure what this means). However, when I try to enter a Q_id or a U_id that does not exist in the questions or users tables, MySQL still allows these values. What did I do wrong? How can I prevent a table with a foreign key from accepting invalid data? If I add TYPE=InnoDB to the end, I get an error: ERROR 1005 (HY000): Can't create table './quotes/actions.frm' (errno: 150) Why might that happen? I'm told that it's important to enforce data integrity with functional foreign keys, but also that InnoDB should not be used with MySQL. What do you recommend?

  • Loading Native library to external Package in Eclipse not working. is it a Bug?

    - by TacB0sS
    I was about to report a but to Eclipse, but I was thinking to give this a chance here first: If I add an external package, the application cannot find the referenced native library, except in the case specified at the below: If my workspace consists of a single project, and I import an external package 'EX_package.jar' from a folder outside of the project folder, I can assign a folder to the native library location via: mouse over package - right click - properties - Native Library - Enter your folder. This does not work. In runtime the application does not load the library, System.mapLibraryName(Path) also does not work. Further more, if I create a User Library, and add the package to it and define a folder for the native library it still does not. If it works for you then I have a major bug since it does not work on my computer I test this in any combination I could think of, including adding the path to the windows PATH parameter, and so many other ways I can't even start to remember, nothing worked, I played with this for hours and had a colleague try to assist me, but we both came up empty. Further more, if I have a main project that is dependent on few other projects in my workspace, and they all need to use the same 'EX_package.jar' I MUST supply a HARD COPY INTO EACH OF THEM, it will ONLY (I can't stress the ONLYNESS, I got freaked out by this) work if I have a hard copy of the package in ALL of the project folders that the main project has a dependency on, and ONLY if I configure the Native path in each of them!! This also didn't do the trick. please tell me there is a solution to this, this drives me nuts... Thanks, Adam Zehavi.

  • Safe to pass objects to C functions when working in JNI Invocation API?

    - by bubbadoughball
    I am coding up something using the JNI Invocation API. A C program starts up a JVM and makes calls into it. The JNIenv pointer is global to the C file. I have numerous C functions which need to perform the same operation on a given class of jobject. So I wrote helper functions which take a jobject and process it, returning the needed data (a C data type...for example, an int status value). Is it safe to write C helper functions and pass jobjects to them as arguments? i.e. (a simple example - designed to illustrate the question): int getStatusValue(jobject jStatus) { return (*jenv)->CallIntMethod(jenv,jStatus,statusMethod); } int function1() { int status; jobject aObj = (*jenv)->NewObject (jenv, aDefinedClass, aDefinedCtor); jobject j = (*jenv)->CallObjectMethod (jenv, aObj, aDefinedObjGetMethod) status = getStatusValue(j); (*jenv)->DeleteLocalRef(jenv,aObj); (*jenv)->DeleteLocalRef(jenv,j); return status; } Thanks.

  • How can I set an absolute path for include function in php above the working directory?

    - by Baros
    I am running a script from /wp-content/themes/currenttheme/chat.php I want to include in the above php another one located in /forum/chat/index.php The index.php includes its own files I already tried `$root = $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT']; include($root."/forum/chat/index.php");` but I get this error `Warning: require(D:/My Dropbox/xampp/htdocs/lib/custom.php) [function.require]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in D:\My Dropbox\xampp\htdocs\forum\chat\index.php on line 17 Fatal error: require() [function.require]: Failed opening required 'D:/My Dropbox/xampp/htdocs/lib/custom.php' (include_path='.;\My Dropbox\xampp\php\PEAR') in D:\My Dropbox\xampp\htdocs\forum\chat\index.php on line 17` (the index.php also includes some files, but the /forum is ommited somehow in the path) then I tried `$path = getcwd(); $myfile = "/forum/chat/index.php"; include ($path.$myfile);` and got this error: `Warning: include(D:\My Dropbox\xampp\htdocs\forum/forum/chat/index.php) [function.include]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in D:\My Dropbox\xampp\htdocs\wp-content\themes\currenttheme\chat.php on line 24 Warning: include() [function.include]: Failed opening 'D:\My Dropbox\xampp\htdocs\forum/forum/chat/index.php' for inclusion (include_path='.;\My Dropbox\xampp\php\PEAR') in D:\My Dropbox\xampp\htdocs\wp-content\themes\currenttheme\chat.php on line 24`

  • How do people handle working with Code Names for their projects?

    - by Mark
    Hi All, Recently we started using some code names for several different types of prototype applications all following a theme. This made things a little more fun and was a great idea. The problem is that Im not too sure how people deal with migrating a codebase from "codename" state into version 1.0 state which may have a proper name... not something that a client really shouldnt see :) We are using Visual Studio at the moment, and I can see that you can change the assembly name, but there are references to the namespaces, etc... that would really be a large change to make. Do people both changing things like namespaces before the v1.0 release?

  • Why does my perl server stop working when i press 'enter'?

    - by David
    I have created a server in perl that sends messages or commands to the client. I can send commands just fine, but when i am being prompted for the command on my server i have created, if i press 'enter', the server messes up. Why is this happening? Here is part of my code: print "\nConnection recieved from IP address $peer_address on port $peer_port "; $closed_message = "\n\tTerminated client session..."; while (1) { print "\nCommand: "; $send_data = <STDIN>; chop($send_data); if ($send_data eq 'e' or $send_data eq 'E' or $send_data eq ' E' or $send_data eq ' E ' or $send_data eq 'E ' or $send_data eq ' e' or $send_data eq ' e ' or $send_data eq 'e') { $client_socket->send ($send_data); close $client_socket; print "$closed_message\n"; &options; } else { $client_socket->send($send_data); } $client_socket->recv($recieved_data,8000); print "\nRecieved: $recieved_data"; } }

  • How to avoid repetition when working with primitive types?

    - by I82Much
    I have the need to perform algorithms on various primitive types; the algorithm is essentially the same with the exception of which type the variables are. So for instance, /** * Determine if <code>value</code> is the bitwise OR of elements of <code>validValues</code> array. * For instance, our valid choices are 0001, 0010, and 1000. * We are given a value of 1001. This is valid because it can be made from * ORing together 0001 and 1000. * On the other hand, if we are given a value of 1111, this is invalid because * you cannot turn on the second bit from left by ORing together those 3 * valid values. */ public static boolean isValid(long value, long[] validValues) { for (long validOption : validValues) { value &= ~validOption; } return value != 0; } public static boolean isValid(int value, int[] validValues) { for (int validOption : validValues) { value &= ~validOption; } return value != 0; } How can I avoid this repetition? I know there's no way to genericize primitive arrays, so my hands seem tied. I have instances of primitive arrays and not boxed arrays of say Number objects, so I do not want to go that route either. I know there are a lot of questions about primitives with respect to arrays, autoboxing, etc., but I haven't seen it formulated in quite this way, and I haven't seen a decisive answer on how to interact with these arrays. I suppose I could do something like: public static<E extends Number> boolean isValid(E value, List<E> numbers) { long theValue = value.longValue(); for (Number validOption : numbers) { theValue &= ~validOption.longValue(); } return theValue != 0; } and then public static boolean isValid(long value, long[] validValues) { return isValid(value, Arrays.asList(ArrayUtils.toObject(validValues))); } public static boolean isValid(int value, int[] validValues) { return isValid(value, Arrays.asList(ArrayUtils.toObject(validValues))); } Is that really much better though? Any thoughts in this matter would be appreciated.
