• Migrating IBM ClearCase to TFS

  Using the Team Foundation Server Integration Tools Platform. Versions: ClearCase: 7.1.1.2 Team Foundation Server: 2012 RTM Integration Tools: 2.2.20314.1 OS: Windows 2008 R2 ENT SP1 I was able to do a simple example migration of a few files by using the following approach: Using a dynamic view Creating a view shortcut drive (i.e. Z:\) Running the tools as a UI client (not as a windows service) Running the tools UI in user mode (do not “Run as Administrator”) Using the CC detailed history adapter Selecting the view shortcut drive (i.e. Z) on the Tools UI Connect to CC dialog Selecting the “Detect Changes in CC” option on the Tools UI Connect to CC dialog Changing the DisableTargetAnalysis value to True on the Tools UI configuration view I have yet to perform actual migrations for real projects, but will update this blog as I do.

• how to get bash to stop escaping $ during tab-completion?

  I have this on the command line: ln -sf $PWD/wine- and then I hit tab to complete the filename. In earlier versions of Ubuntu, this worked just fine to complete the wine- filename (and as a side-effect $PWD would be expanded at that time). But now it turns it in to ln -sf \$PWD/wine- which isn't what I meant at all and doesn't complete anything as the file does not literally start with $. • What is the point to namespaces in branches in git?

  So I mainly use Mercurial for my projects and I decided to sit down and learn all Git's shenanigans to discover if I'm in the right side (at least for me). I'm learning that git uses namespaces for branches and I would like to know (in your experience) what is the point of namespaces?. In Mercurial I could just set the convention of naming branches like so: <branch name> //for "origin" branches <username>/<branch name> //for user branches I imagine that there is more to it than just the name (aside from avoiding naming conflicts), but what do I get out of this seemingly more complicated (not necessarily bad) model?

• What makes Java so suitable for writing NoSQL Databases

  Looking at this page that aggregates the current NoSQL landscape, one can see that the majority of these projects are written in Java. Databases are complex systems software dealing with the file system, and so C/C++ would be a better choice than Java for this. (that's my thinking which might be flawed) Secondly, databases deal with transferring large amounts of data from disk to RAM -- which they call a working set. The JVM takes non-trivial amount of RAM for it's own purpose -- so it would be more efficient to use a platform that leaves lots of memory for data instead of hogging it for its own operations. The major relational databases are ALL written in C/C++ MySQL C, C++ Oracle Assembler, C, C++ SQL Server C++ PostgreSQL C SQLite C So what makes Java so popular in NoSQL world.

  If I use this code: using (StreamWriter streamWriter = new StreamWriter("Content/player.txt", true)) { streamWriter.Write("Hello!"); streamWriter.Close(); } The program will not actually add "Hello!" to the file. However, if I use this code: using (StreamWriter streamWriter = new StreamWriter("C:/Users/Michael/Documents/Visual Studio 2010/Projects/PuzzleGame/PuzzleGame/PuzzleGameContent/player.TXT", true)) { streamWriter.Write("Hello!"); streamWriter.Close(); } The program will work as intended and add "Hello!" to the save file. Is there any way I can do this without hardcoding the path?

• Legally, can I re reuse code for different customers?

  The company I work for develops custom factory automation applications for multiple customers. Even though each application is custom, they contain common code which is re-used across projects. One of the customers is now looking for the source code to their application, which has caused a major storm in the company. Management have decided that we can't give them the source to the shared components as they are used by other customers. I've been asked to modify the shared components 'enough' so as they aren't common. So my questions are: 1) Legally, should there be any problem with re-using common components for different customer? 2) If I really need to modify the common components, then how much is 'enough' ? (I know this sucks, but I either do this or hand in my notice). Oh yeah, and my company has no license in place with any of these customers.

• How can I install another version of Ubuntu on my computer and then uninstall it without messing up my bootup process?

  I have Ubuntu 11.10 installed and I am having some problems with it. I'd like to see if the problems are related to some customizations I did. Since one of my problems relate to the slow logout process, I don't want to use the live version. I want to actually install a new version in a separate partition along side my current version and then, after testing that new version and figuring out what I want, just removing the partition and going back to a single version of Ubuntu on this computer. Does anyone know how to do that without messing up my boot process?

• Ubuntu Windows Installer - Firewall

  I installed Ubuntu with the Windows installer to use it along side. I could not find anything to activate a firewall so I thought its inbuilt and running. However now I read that I have to activate it manually? The command that was shown actually didnt promt any repsonse. Is it that the Windows installer version does not have that. Also my greatest concern is that I was without firewall protection for 2-3 weeks and I am using alot of public networks (university and dorm(only cable but still)). Thanks in advance.

  I'm currently working with phpmyedit and I need to access to the 'Add' (new record) function using a URL. As this script (phpmyedit) is dinamically generated, when I press the 'Add' button, I get the form to fill but the URL has no changes. How can I create some custom URL for the ADD button, that allows me to access externally and also pass parameters through the URL?   Possible Duplicate: How do you dive into large code bases? I have worked as a developer developing C/C++ applications for mobile platforms (Windows Mobile and Symbian) for about six years. About a year ago, however, I changed job and currently work with large(!) enterprise systems with high security and availability requirements, all developed in Java. My problem is that I am having a hard time getting a grip on the architecture of the systems, even after a year working with them, and understanding systems other people have built has never been my strong side. The fact that I haven't worked with enterprise systems before doesn't exactly help. Does anyone have a good approach on how to learn and understand large systems? Are there any particular techniques and/or patterns I should read up on?

• Reasons why AppHub samples won't build?

  I have an issue off of most downloaded projects where whenever I build it, VS2010 just crashes. I had this issue a while before, and it was widespread, I reinstalled, and it worked fine afterwards. If I create my own XNA project, and copy all of classes and assets over (which I admit, is super fun anyway) things build fine. But if I just download the project from here http://create.msdn.com/en-US/education/catalog/sample/roleplaying_game (RolePlayingGame_4_0_Win_Xbox.zip) and try to build, it automatically stops working, restarts, and reopens the project. If I Debug/Deploy to my Xbox, I do get a sucessful version to the Xbox, but VS2010 still stops and restarts. I've already repaired, and reinstalled again, still having the issue. Can anything think of plausible solutions?

  I remember when I learnt PHP, it was suggested that I code a simple blog or a forum after reading the language fundamentals and syntax. I was told/read that this would cover everything that I would learn about PHP in a beginners book. This advice was out there in a number of places, and after following and working with PHP it seems quite good advice. I am now learning Java, and reading the book Thinking in Java by Bruce Eckel. I wonder if there is any such set of similar, small projects that I could take up, that would cover all the essentials and most of what is covered in the book. Thanks.

  I have registered a new domain with a hosting company. They offer the feature that for each new domain there is an associated placeholder page. Actually it is a "Site not configured page" with some technical text and links to the hosting site. I could: submit its URL to search engines right now remove the page and submit the URL when the site will be online (could be a couple of months) replace the default page with "coming soon" contents and submit the URL opt for simplicity and add a blank html page having a focused and well descriptive title and maybe some meta tag other? I prefer 4 over 3 because at the moment there aren't precise project details to provide. What's the proper way to notify search engines that soon this site will be online, without getting penalized for side effects I'm not considering or aware of?

  I've been rummaging through Unity's source code (Shell Interface) and I was a little curious about something; where in the code are you supposed to find positional code? I'll clarify a bit with some examples. How do you find in the code what tells the Launcher to sit on the left side of the screen? Where in the code does it tell the "Session" button on the panel (top) to sit at the very right of the screen? I guess my real question is how do I find this out for myself? I've looked through a big portion of the source code and can't find anything related to the actual position of these items, only their sub-items like text-align. • Is it advisable to ask employees to create 'work' GitHub accounts?

  I've moved all our company Git repositories to GitHub and now I want to add employees to the projects. Since most employees already have personal GitHub accounts, I'm wondering whether I should ask them to create a work GitHub account. The reason that I'm thinking of doing this is to decrease the chances of unauthorized access to our code base since their personal accounts may be well publicized through their personal activity on the site, increasing chances of targeted attacks. Furthermore, if their personal account is ever compromised it won't mean the whole company code is accessible to the hijacker. Since this will bring the burden of maintaining two accounts for the employees I'm wondering whether it is the correct approach and whether it even makes sense. I would love to hear your opinions on this.

  In one of my projects users are allowed to edit the same file. It is group work and max number of users in group is 4. It is rare that they will be editing at the same time but there is possibility of it. I am using ckeditor which displays the content. how I can lock the content while it is being edited? For the above case what will happen if one users open the content for editing and then never saves and leave window open. Is it possible to save the content, release the lock for editing by another users? If first user comes back to desk they should see the message that "content has been changed, please refresh". • Successful business proposal; How to negotiate with employer for bonuses on the project [on hold]

  I'm the lone programmer at a small business which is falling head-over-heels for a website proposal I wrote on a project they were considering. Next week is the company meeting where it will be formally presented to the owners, and if the project is accepted it could become a (relatively) huge revenue stream when finished. Despite all the buzz I have no financial stake in the success or failure of the project. I know I haven't been profitable and they can't pay me what I should be making. I'm also the only non-management employee with no way to earn a bonus, despite having one of the most demanding jobs in the office. I'd like to know if there's any resources or advice for programmers or employees to negotiate and get invested in a projects success. Just a way to guarantee if I prove my worth I can move up a rung or two.
