• Installing the Windows Azure Tools for Visual Studio March 2011 and SDK 1.4

  Coming from the joys and new features the SDK 1.3 version gave us back in November/December, we are now again at the doors of another update, Version 1.4 To get it, go to the Windows Azure website, the click on the Develop Menu option.  Once there, Click on the Get Tools & SDK button. This will start the download to activate the Web Platform Installer, when you review the information on it, you get this. Click Install. And Accept the EULA. Installation starts at this point. And you are finished. More to come on the changes this addresses.

• Removed Xserver driver. ubuntu doesnt start. what should i Do?

  im new on ubuntu , i intalled it ( dual booted with windows 7) i was customizing it, but when i tried to run compiz it said that missing glx or something like that in the screen, i realized that the driver that i was not using wasnt the gefroce on so i went to nvidia downloaded the correct version for my graphic ( geforce gtm 525m) when y run the .run file it told me that i was using xserver and that i cant install this driver with the xserver installed. i search for information of how to remove or disable xserver i found one. in this web site --http://www.ubuntugeek.com/ubuntu-tiphow-to-removeinstall-and-reconfigure-xorg-without-reinstalling-ubuntu.html when i run the command , after that i tried to instal the geforce on, doesnt work so i remember windows that you must reboot after a driver unintallation or intallation so i reboot, them ubuntu doesnto load, it show the ubuntu whit the five dots like or 1-2 sec and them i get a black screen ( not the red-black of ubutntu ) so why i should do. i dont want to re install i dont have a cd and my usb is a little damaged so please if you could help me

  Is it acceptable to return a non-zero exit code if the program in question ran properly? For example, say I have a simple program that (only) does the following: Program takes N arguments. It returns an exit code of min(N, 255). Note that any N is valid for the program. A more realistic program might return different codes for successfully ran programs that signify different things. Should these programs instead write this information to a stream instead, such as to stdout?

• RDA Health Checks for SOA

  What is a health check in RDA? A health check evaluates something in your environment to determine whether a change needs to be considered in order to avoid a problem or optimize fuctionality. Examples of what this 'something' might be are: Configuration Parameters JVM Options Runtime Statistics What have we done for SOA? In the latest release of RDA, 4.30, we have added a Rule Set for SOA called 'Oracle SOA 11g (11.1.1) Post Installation (Generic)'. This Rule Set contains 14 SOA related health checks. These checks were all derived from common issues / solutions we see in support of the SOA product. Many of the recommendations come from the product documentation while others are covered in the SOA Knowledge Base. Our goal is that you will be able to easily identify the areas of concern and understand the guidance available from the output of the Rule Set. Running the health checks for SOA The rules that the checks use are installed with RDA and bundled by product or functional area into what are called 'Rule Sets'. To view the available Rule Sets simply run the command from the RDA home location: rda.cmd (or .sh) -dT hcve This will bring up a list of the available HCVE (Health Check / Verification Engine) Rule Sets. Each Rule Set contains a group of related rules that are used for evalutation and display of results. A rule can be considered synonymous with a single health check and they are assigned an ID, Name and Description that can be seen when they are executed. The Rule Set for SOA is option number 11 and you just enter this selection at the prompt. The Rule Set will then execute to completion. After running an HCVE Rule Set the tool will write the output to the RDA_HOME/output folder. The simplest way to view the output is to drag the .htm file to a browser but of course it can also be uploaded to a Service Request for evaluation by Oracle Support. Many of the Rule Sets will prompt you for information before they can execute their rules but the SOA Rule Set will identify the SOA domains configured in your RDA setup.cfg file. This means that you don't need to answer all of the questions again about where stuff is but it also means that you must have configured RDA for SOA. To run the Rule Set: Download the latest version of RDA from MOS Doc ID 314422.1 Configure RDA for your SOA domains. Detailed steps can be found here In it's simplest form the command is 'rda.cmd (.sh) -S SOA' Go to the RDA home location and enter the command 'rda.cmd (or .sh) -dT hcve' Select option '11' It should be noted that this our first release of a SOA Rule Set so there will probably be some things we need to clean up or fix. None of these rules will actually modify anything on your system as they are read only and do the evaluations internally. Please let us know if you have any issues with the rules or ideas for new ones so we can make them as useful as possible. The Checks Here is a list of the SOA health checks by ID, Name and Description. ID Name Description A00100 SOA Domain Homes Lists the SOA domains that were indentified from the RDA setup.cfg file A00200 Coherence Protocol Conflict Checks to see if you have both Unicast and Multicast configured in the same domain. Checks both the setDomainEnv and config.xml entries (if it exists). We recommend Unicast with fully qualified host names or IP addresses. A00210 Coherence Fully Qualified Host Checks that the host names are fully qualified or that IP addresses are used. Will fail if unqualified host names are detected. A00220 Unicast Local Host Checks that the Coherence localhost is specified for use with Unicast A00300 JTA Timeout Checks that the JTA timeout is configured for the domain and lists the value. The bundled rule will only list the current values of the JTA timeout for each SOA Domain. In the future the rule with fail with a warning if the value is 300 seconds or lower. It is recommended that timeouts follow the pattern 'syncMaxWaitTime' < EJB Timeouts < JTA Timeout. The 300 second value is important because the EJB Timeouts default to 300 seconds. Additional information can be found in MOS Doc ID 880313.1. A00310 XA Max Time Checks that the JTA Maximum XA call time is set for the domain. Fails if it is not explicitly set or if the value is less than or equal to the default of 12000 ms. A00320 XA Timeout Checks that the XA timeout is enabled and that the value is '0' for the SOA Data Source (SOADataSource-jdbc.xml) A00330 JDBC Statement Timeout Checks that the Statement Timeout is set for all SOA Data Sources. Fails if the value is not set or if it is set to the default of -1. A00400 XA Driver Checks that the SOA Data Source is configured to use an XA driver. Fails if it is not. A00410 JDBC Capacity Settings Checks that the minimum and maximum capacity are equal for all SOA Data Sources. Fails if they are not and lists specifically which data sources failed. A00500 SOA Roles Checks that the default SOA roles 'SOAAdmin' and 'SOAOperator' are configured for the soa-infra application in the file sytem-jazn-data.xml. Fails if they are not. A00700 SOA-INFRA Deployment Checks that the soa-infra application is deployed to either a cluster, all members of a cluster or a stand alone server. A00710 SOA Deployments Checks that the SOA related applications are deployed to the same domain members as soa-infra. A00720 SOA Library Deployments Checks that the SOA related libraries are deployed to the same domain members as soa-infra. A00730 Data Source Deployments Checks that the SOA Data Sources are all targeted to the same domain members as soa-infra

• Windows Azure SDK 1.2 Available - .NET 4.0 Support

  The Windows Azure team had just announced the release of the latest version of its tools and SDK (v1.2) at the TechED 2010 New Orleans. You can download it here. The biggest new feature/improvement of this version of the SDK would be Visual Studio 2010 RTM and .NET 4.0 support. It gives us the facilities to build our azure-based applications on top of .NET 3.5 and 4.0 as well. So the guys who is working on, like me, or is going to be working on .NET 4 would better to have this SDK installed I think. • Configure IPv6 on your Linux system (Ubuntu)

  After the presentation on IPv6 at the first event of the Emtel Knowledge Series and some recent discussion on social media networks with other geeks and Linux interested IT people here in Mauritius, I thought that I should give it a try (finally) and tweak my local network infrastructure. Honestly, I have been to busy with contractual project work and it never really occurred to me to set up IPv6 in my LAN. Well, the following paragraphs are going to shed some light on those aspects of modern computer and network technology. This is the first article in a series on IPv6 configuration: Configure IPv6 on your Linux system DHCPv6: Provide IPv6 information in your local network Enabling DNS for IPv6 infrastructure Accessing your web server via IPv6 Piece of advice: This is based on my findings on the internet while reading other people's helpful articles and going through a couple of man-pages on my local system. Let's embrace IPv6 The basic configuration on Linux is actually very simple as the kernel, operating system, and user-space programs support that protocol natively. If your system is ready to go for IP (aka: IPv4), then you are good to go for anything else. At least, I didn't have to install any additional packages on my system(s). We are going to assign a static IPv6 address to the system. Hence, we have to modify the definition of interfaces and check whether we have an inet6 entry specified. Open your favourite text editor and check the following entries (it should be at least similar to this): $ sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces auto eth0# IPv4 configurationiface eth0 inet static  address 192.168.1.2  network 192.168.1.0  netmask 255.255.255.0  broadcast 192.168.1.255# IPv6 configurationiface eth0 inet6 static  pre-up modprobe ipv6  address 2001:db8:bad:a55::2  netmask 64 Of course, you might have to adjust your interface device (eth0) or you might be interested to have multiple directives for additional devices (eth1, eth2, etc.). The auto instruction takes care that your device is enabled and configured during the booting phase. The use of the pre-up directive depends on your kernel configuration but in most scenarios this might be an optional line. Anyways, it doesn't hurt to have it enabled after all - just to be on the safe side. Next, either restart your network subsystem like so: $ sudo service networking restart Or you might prefer to do it manually with identical parameters, like so: $ sudo ifconfig eth0 inet6 add 2001:db8:bad:a55::2/64 In case that you're logged in remotely into your PC (ie. via ssh), it is highly advised to opt for the second choice and add the device manually. You can check your configuration afterwards with one of the following commands (depends on whether it is installed): $ sudo ifconfig eth0eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:21:5a:50:d7:94            inet addr:192.168.160.2  Bcast:192.168.160.255  Mask:255.255.255.0          inet6 addr: fe80::221:5aff:fe50:d794/64 Scope:Link          inet6 addr: 2001:db8:bad:a55::2/64 Scope:Global          UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1 $ sudo ip -6 address show eth03: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qlen 1000    inet6 2001:db8:bad:a55::2/64 scope global        valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever    inet6 fe80::221:5aff:fe50:d794/64 scope link        valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever In both cases, it confirms that our network device has been assigned a valid IPv6 address. That's it in general for your setup on one system. But of course, you might be interested to enable more services for IPv6, especially if you're already running a couple of them in your IP network. • Parsing google site speed in analytics

  I'm having a hard time making heads or tails of the Site Speed graphs in Google Analytics. Our site speed is fluctuating wildly from month to month, despite a large sample (the report is "based on 100,000's of visits) and a consistent web set up (static files served from an EC2 instance running nginx behind a load balancer). Here's our site speed, with each datapoint representing a week worth of data. Over this time period we modified our source and HTTP headers to increase our cache hits on static resources by 5x. Why would it fluctuate so much? Is there any way to get more reliable information from those graphs?

• Are there any guidelines for laying out screen "real estate?"

  I'm wondering if there is any information about creating a decent page layout so that your website will appeal to users of all resolutions. For example, the optimal width for pages. It seems like on my resolution, most websites have their content centered and covers about 80% of the page, which is easy on the eyes. Or maybe the height of the website's logo/header -- some sites I stumble upon have a huge logo with links or navigation under it, making it so that I need to scroll down to see the actual content, like articles or images (these sites don't keep me for very long). I understand that every user is different and may have browser extensions, page zoom or may be running some ancient system that displays in 640x480. I'm not looking for a "best" solution, but rather, some guidelines about designing to accommodate different resolutions. Basically, how can I make sure that I don't design a page where a paragraph might display in several easy-to-read lines on my resolution, but it turns into a single line on a 1920x1080 resolution and makes it hard for the user to follow?

  A few months back, I was doing some recreational reading at the iOS Dev Center, and I came across a small list of guidelines for free vs. paid apps. It included guidance along these lines: How not to promote a paid version within a free version Not displaying "placeholder" buttons in a free version that "work" in a paid version I can't remember much more than that, and I cannot find it anymore on the iOS Dev Center. It's possible I imagined it entirely, but I doubt it - does anyone have a link to this information, or have a set of guidelines for free vs. paid apps in the App Store?

• Is it customary for software companies to forbid code authors from taking credit for their work? do code authors have a say?

  The company I work for has decided that the source code for a set of tools they make available to customers is also going to be made available to those customers. Since I am the author of that source code, and since many source code files have my name written in them as part of class declaration documentation comments, I've been asked to remove author information from the source code files, even though the license headers at the beginning of each source file make it clear that the company is the owner of the code. Since I'm relatively new to this industry I was wondering whether it's considered typical for companies that decide to make their source code available to third parties to not allow the code authors to take some amount of credit for their work, even when it's clear that the code author is not the owner of the code. Am I right in assuming that I don't have a say on the matter?

• In WPF, should I base my converters on types or use-cases?

  I'm looking for some advice on how to write my WPF value converters. The way I'm currently writing them, they are very specific, like (bool?,bool) = Brush, i.e. I'm writing each converter for a specific use case, in this case, the Brush is bound to an indicator showing equality information between the bool? and the bool. This obviously makes re-use very hard and I end up with a quite large list of converters. Should I strive to write my converters in a more general way? Can I?

• Displaying google analytics data on my website

  I sale adspace for my websites directly to the advertisers. I ad page where I want to show google anaylytics information that update automatically without me having to manually update everyday or every month. I know google has public API and you can connect it to google graph API to to show pretty graphs. • Ubuntu 12.10 stopped during booting

  Good morning, I'm very new to Ubuntu. I decided to change to Ububtu (12.10) for my old laptop (Compaq Presario R3000 with AMD Athlon XP 2800+) that previously used Windows XP. After the installation, the PC restarted but, after a certain activity of the HDD stopped. Menwhile, no information from the screen (blank). Then I retried in recovery mode and the activity stopped at a certain point. I write the last two lines: [ 11.020922] pcmcia_socket pcmcia_socket0: cs: IO port probe 0x3000-0x7fff: [ 11.021676] excluding 0x3000-0x30ff 0x3400-0x34ff 0x3800-0x38ff 0x3c00-0x3cff I don't know how to solve the problem. Thanks in advance for the help.

• How do I mount this HDD?

  I have a Windows HDD attached to an external docking bay on my Ubuntu System, but the HDD brings up an error message: Mounting exited with exit code 14:windows is hibernated, refused to mount. Failed to mount '/dev/sde2':Operation not permitted. The NTFS partition is hibernated. Please resume and shutdown windows properly or mount the volume read-only with the 'ro' mount option, or mount the volume read-write with the 'remove_hiberfile' mount option. For example type in command line: mount -t ntfs-3g-o remove_hiberfile/dev/sde2/media/FE46D60C46D5C615 I am at a loss for exactly how to remove the hiberfile, or even mount it as read-only or read-write. I tried directly copy and pasting that exact command into my terminal, but it said: mount:only root can do that I do not know what to do at this point. I do need to get the information off of this drive, but I do not have a computer to put it in. Does anyone know what I should do from here?

• A testing feedback/report tool?

  I'm thinking of developing a pluggable test and assessment module. This tool will be used especially for desktop application projects to report and log errors, bugs, missing features and suggestions from testers. The tool will be plugged to the application by putting a small icon to the application itself. When pressed the tool will be visible where user can create entries about the application. Is there already a tool like that? I am not speaking about UI testing btw. For example, this tool might have a form consisting of Page name Environment information Entry type (can be bug, feature request, suggestion) Message User Info (name, contact etc) Date I think such a tool can greatly help testers prepare reports. Developers can understand the issue better and track all the reports.

  Some of our customers choose to use the Themes feature to rebrand their Training and Support Center link, and redirect it to an internal support site. If your company does this, we strongly advise that for your employees that have the Administrator role, you maintain a separate theme that keeps the Administrator's Training and Support link pointed to the CRM On Demand Training and Support Center, and not redirect it to an internal support site. Why? The company administrator needs access to the Training and Support Center because it gives them pod-specific application alerts on the Support tab and pod-specific release information on the Release Info tab. If a customer no longer has access to the Training and Support Center URL because they have already rebranded that link, they can contact Customer Care to request it again.
