• How to create a magic square in PHP?

  I'd like to try my hand at creating a Magic Square in PHP (i.e. a grid of numbers that all add up to the same value), but I really don't know where to start. I know of the many methods that create magic square, such as starting "1" at a fixed position, then moving in a specific direction with each iteration. But that doesn't create a truly randomized Magic Square, which is what I'm aiming for. I want to be able to generate an N-by-N Magic Square of N² numbers where each row and column adds up to N(N²+1)/2 (e.g. a 5x5 square where all rows/columns add up to 65 — the diagonals don't matter). Can anybody provide a starting point? I don't want anybody to do the work for me, I just need to know how to start such a project? I know of one generator, written in Java (http://www.dr-mikes-math-games-for-kids.com/how-to-make-a-magic-square.html) but the last Java experience I had was over 10 years ago before I quickly abandoned it. Therefore, I don't really understand what the code is actually doing. I did notice, however, that when you generate a new square, it shows the numbers 1-25 (for a 5x5 square), in order, before quickly generating a fresh randomized square.

• pass Validation error to UI element in WPF?

  I am using IDataErrorInfo to validate my data in a form in WPF. I have the validation implemented in my presenter. The actual validation is happening, but the XAML that's supposed to update the UI and set the style isn't happening.   I am struggling with a data model (I use MySQL for the database). I am uneasy about what I have come up with. If someone could suggest a better approach, or point me to some reference matter I would appreciate it. The data would have organizations of many types. I am trying to do a 3 level classification (Class, Category, Type). Say if I have 'Italian Restaurant', it will have the following classification Food Services Restaurants Italian However, an organization may belong to multiple groups. A restaurant may also serve Chinese and Italian. So it will fit into 2 classifications Food Services Restaurants Italian Food Services Restaurants Chinese The classification reference tables would be like the following: ORG_CLASS (RowId, ClassCode, ClassName) 1, FOOD, Food Services ORG_CATEGORY(RowId, ClassCode, CategoryCode, CategoryName) 1, FOOD, REST, Restaurants ORG_TYPE (RowId, ClassCode, CategoryCode, TypeCode, TypeName) 100, FOOD, REST, ITAL, Italian 101, FOOD, REST, CHIN, Chinese 102, FOOD, REST, SPAN, Spanish 103, FOOD, REST, MEXI, Mexican 104, FOOD, REST, FREN, French 105, FOOD, REST, MIDL, Middle Eastern The actual data tables would be like the following: I will allow an organization a max of 3 classifications. I will have 3 GroupIds each pointing to a row in ORG_TYPE. During Search, If all three classification are chosen, It will be more specific. For example, if Food Services Restaurants Italian is the criteria, the where clause would be 'where OrgGroupId1 = 100' If only 2 levels are chosen Food Services Restaurants I have to do 'where OrgGroupId1 in (100,101,102,103,104,105, .....)' - There could be a hundred in that list I will disallow class level search. That is I will force selection of a class and category The Ids would be integers. I am trying to see performance issues and other issues. Overall, would this work? or I need to throw this out and start from scratch.

• How do I add a header with data to a QTableWidget in Qt?

  Hi, I'm still learning Qt and I am indebted to the SO community for providing me with great, very timely answers to my Qt questions. Thank you. I'm quite confused on the idea of adding a header to a QTableWidget. What I'd like to do is have a table that contains information about team members. Each row for a member should contain his first and last name, each in its own cell, an email address in one cell, and office in the other cell. I'd to have a header above these columns to name them as appropriate. I'm trying to start off easy and get just the header to display "Last" (as in last name). Here is my code. int column = m_ui-teamTableWidget-columnCount(); m_ui-teamTableWidget-setColumnCount(column+1); QString* qq = new QString("Last"); m_ui-teamTableWidget-horizontalHeader()-model()-setHeaderData(0, Qt::Horizontal, QVariant(QVariant::String, &qq)); My table gets rendered corretly, but the header doesn't contain what I would expect. It contains 1 cell that contains the text "1". I am obviously doing something very silly here that is wrong, but i am lost. I keep pouring over the documentation, finding nothing. • jeditable not updating browser display - leaves "click to edit..." after succesful edit

  I am using jeditable fairly simply and it all works fine, updates the database, etc. The only problem I have is after the user types the new value data and hits enter it doesn't update the field in the browser to show the new value - instead it puts "Click to edit..." in place of it. Am I missing something like a return value from my php file? the php fucntion just takes the args and updates the database - and it works fine.   I have an abstract object called Applicant and two different types of objects that inherit from Applicant called Business and Individual. So I have three classes that look like this: public abstract class Applicant { ... } public class Individual : Applicant { ... } public class Business : Applicant { ... } Now in the DataGrid I want to show all the details of Applicant object. When you choose a row I want to show details of either the business or individual as a internal grid. • EPIPE blocks server

  I have written a single-threaded asynchronous server in C running on Linux: The socket is non-blocking and as for polling, I am using epoll. Benchmarks show that the server performs fine and according to Valgrind, there are no memory leaks or other problems. The only problem is that when a write() command is interrupted (because the client closed the connection), the server will encounter a SIGPIPE. I am doing the interrupted artifically by running the benchmarking utility "siege" with the parameter -b. It does lots of requests in a row which all work perfectly. Now I press CTRL-C and restart the "siege". Sometimes I am lucky and the server does not manage to send the full response because the client's fd is invalid. As expected errno is set to EPIPE. I handle this situation, execute close() on the fd and then free the memory related to the connection. Now the problem is that the server blocks and does not answer properly anymore. Then, it's added to the EPOLL queue. epoll_wait() signalises that the client sent data (EPOLLIN). The request is parsed and and a response is composed. Sending the headers works fine but when it comes to the body, write() results in an EPIPE. It is not a bug in "siege" because it blocks any incoming connections, no matter from which client.

• Android SQLite database locale, locking, and version

  In some books and online I see these method calls being made after a database is created: db.setLocale(Locale.getDefault()); db.setLockingEnabled(true); db.setVersion(DB_VERSION); Why is this done? As far as I can tell, after creating a new database, the system adds a table named android_metadata with one field named locale and that table has one row with the locale field set to "en_US". Now I assume the column has that value because I am using a U.S. phone, and if I were using a phone from a different region then the locale field would be set appropriately. Can anyone confirm this? I'm guessing that the setLocale method would only be useful in the case that you install a pre-built database onto a phone and then want to change the locale to match the phone's locale. Sound right? The documentation for setLockingEnabled says it defaults to true so there's no need to make that call, right? Lastly, what's with the call to setVersion? I can't find a table that contains this information so I've been assuming that the database file itself stores the version number somewhere. So when I create a database, which requires you to have already specified the version number in the call to the SQLiteOpenHelper constructor, there's no point in calling setVersion. Again, perhaps this method exists for the case of installing a pre-built database to a device and you then wish to change the database's version (though I can't think of when doing this would make sense).   What it does (sort of)... or is meant to, the script reads from a csv file that contains information on sound files and create a play list exactly 60 minutes long. An example csv, contains: their title, duration (in seconds), minium total time to be played (in minutes) An example is: Soundfoo,120,10 Soundbar,30,6 Sounddev,60,20 Soundrandom,15,8 The script works out the minimum instances of plays, take 'Soundfoo' for example, the length of each sample is 120 seconds and the minimum time to be played is 10 minutes, so basic maths 10*60/120 gives the number of instances the song is to be played, in this case 5. It is meant to take minimum number of instances and spread out equally from each other; so there will never be a period where for example Soundbar is played twice in a row. Then if the minium instances of each song has been used, and there is still time with in the 60 min, how is it possible to tell it to go back and fill the time by selecting each sound and including it till the 60 min is filled while remaining sparsely populated. Heres the issue(s)! The script fails to calculate the actual time require to play all the sounds in a file and the total time of the playlist, the thing is tho it doesn't get it wrong all the time maybe 3/5 times, even if I run it on the same csv file it will give me different answers. • R plot- SGAM plot counts vs. time - how do I get dates on the x-axis?

  I'd like to plot this vs. time, with the actual dates (years actually, 1997,1998...2010). The dates are in a raw format, ala SAS, days since 1960 (hence as.date conversion). If I convert the dates using as.date to variable x, and do the GAM plot, I get an error. It works fine with the raw day numbers. • jitter if multiple outliers in ggplot2 boxplot

  I am trying to find a suitable display to illustrate various properties within and across school classes. For each class there is only 15-30 data points (pupils). Right now i am leaning towards a whisker-less boxplot, showing only 1.,2. and 3. quartile + datapoints more then e.g. 1 population SD +/- the sample median. This I can do. However - I need to show this graph to some teachers, in order to gauge what they like most. I'd like to compare my graph with a normal boxplot. But the normal boxplot looks the same if there is only one outlier, or e.g. 5 outliers at the same value. • Why doesen't it work to write this NSMutableArray to a plist?

  edited. Hey, I am trying to write an NSMutableArray to a plist. The compiler does not show any errors, but it does not write to the plist anyway. I have tried this on a real device too, not just the Simulator. Basically, what this code does, is that when you click the accessoryView of a UITableViewCell, it gets the indexPath pressed, edits an NSMutableArray and tries to write that NSMutableArray to a plist. It then reloads the arrays mentioned (from multiple plists) and reloads the data in a UITableView from the arrays. • Binding data to the custom DataGridView

  All, I have a customized DataGridView where I have implemented extra functionality and bounded datasource in the same custom DataGridView (Using C# and .NET). Now, I could able to use it properly by placing it on a panel control. I have added label as button on panel control to display data from datasource on to datagrid and create a binding source. Another Label which act as a button is used to update data from grid to databse. Issue: I pressed show label to display data in a dsatagridview. Modified the grid cell value and immediately pressed update label which is on same panel control. I observed that, the cursor is still in the grid cell when I press Save button. While saving, the cell value is null even though I have entered something in the presentation layer. My expected behaviour is to get the modified value while saving. Special Case: After typing something in the grid cell, if I click on somewhere else like the row below where I entered something, before I click on Save button, it is working fine. (Here, mainly I tried to remove the focus from the currently modified cell) Is there any way to bind sources before I click on save button? Please suggest me. Please feel free to ask me if you need any information.
