  • Migrating ASP.NET (MVC 2) on .NET 3.5 over to .NET 4

    I've currently got a ASP.NET MVC 2 application on .NET 3.5 and I want to migrate it over to the new .NET 4.0 with Visual Studio 2010. Reason being that it's always good to stay on top of these things - plus I really like the new automatic encoding with <%: %> and clean web.config :-) So, does anyone have any experience they could share? Looking for gotchas and the likes. I guess this could also apply to any ASP.NET Forms projects aswell. TIA, Charles

  • Tim Heuer's editable combobox and tab stops

    I'm using Tim Heuer's editable combo box in one of my Silverlight 3 projects and it works rather well. This control has an issue with tab stops though, that I don't understand yet... You have to hit tab twice so as to move to the next item. Did anyone manage to make this control support tabstops?

  • Algorithm for heat map?

    I have a list of values each with latitude and longitude. I'm looking to create a translucent heatmap image to overlay on Google Maps. I know there are server side and flash based solutions already, but I want to build this in javascript using the canvas tag. However, I can't seem to find a concise description of the algorithm used to turn coordinates and values into a heatmap. Can anyone provide or link to one? Thanks.

    I downloaded the nServicebus binaries as of May 17th and have two different vb.net projects (one in .net 3.5, the other in .net 4.0) that both have the error "Reference to Assembly nServicebus, Version 2.0.0.1145, culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=9fc386479f8a226c containing the type NServicebus.IStartable. Add one to your project. I have in the references already nServicebus.dll, nservicebus.Core.dll, and log4net.dll

  • Python Wildcard Import Vs Named Import

    Ok, I have some rather odd behavior in one of my Projects and I'm hoping someone can tell me why. My file structure looks like this: MainApp.py res/ __init__.py elements/ __init__.py MainFrame.py Inside of MainFrame.py I've defined a class named RPMWindow which extends wx.Frame. In MainApp.py this works: from res.elements.MainFrame import * And this does not: from res.elements.MainFrame import RPMWindow I realize that the wild card import won't hurt anything, but I'm more interested in understanding why the named import is failing when the wild card succeeds.

  • PostgreSQL to Data-Warehouse: Best approach for near-real-time ETL / extraction of data

    Background: I have a PostgreSQL (v8.3) database that is heavily optimized for OLTP. I need to extract data from it on a semi real-time basis (some-one is bound to ask what semi real-time means and the answer is as frequently as I reasonably can but I will be pragmatic, as a benchmark lets say we are hoping for every 15min) and feed it into a data-warehouse. How much data? At peak times we are talking approx 80-100k rows per min hitting the OLTP side, off-peak this will drop significantly to 15-20k. The most frequently updated rows are ~64 bytes each but there are various tables etc so the data is quite diverse and can range up to 4000 bytes per row. The OLTP is active 24x5.5. Best Solution? From what I can piece together the most practical solution is as follows: Create a TRIGGER to write all DML activity to a rotating CSV log file Perform whatever transformations are required Use the native DW data pump tool to efficiently pump the transformed CSV into the DW Why this approach? TRIGGERS allow selective tables to be targeted rather than being system wide + output is configurable (i.e. into a CSV) and are relatively easy to write and deploy. SLONY uses similar approach and overhead is acceptable CSV easy and fast to transform Easy to pump CSV into the DW Alternatives considered .... Using native logging (http://www.postgresql.org/docs/8.3/static/runtime-config-logging.html). Problem with this is it looked very verbose relative to what I needed and was a little trickier to parse and transform. However it could be faster as I presume there is less overhead compared to a TRIGGER. Certainly it would make the admin easier as it is system wide but again, I don't need some of the tables (some are used for persistent storage of JMS messages which I do not want to log) Querying the data directly via an ETL tool such as Talend and pumping it into the DW ... problem is the OLTP schema would need tweaked to support this and that has many negative side-effects Using a tweaked/hacked SLONY - SLONY does a good job of logging and migrating changes to a slave so the conceptual framework is there but the proposed solution just seems easier and cleaner Using the WAL Has anyone done this before? Want to share your thoughts?

Once converted, the .vbproj files have changed from this in VS2008: <PropertyGroup Condition=" '$(Configuration)|$(Platform)' == 'Debug|AnyCPU' "> <DebugSymbols>true</DebugSymbols> <DebugType>full</DebugType> <DefineDebug>true</DefineDebug> <DefineTrace>true</DefineTrace> <OutputPath>bin\Debug\</OutputPath> <DocumentationFile>CustomerManager.xml</DocumentationFile> <WarningsAsErrors>41999,42016,42017,42018,42019,42020,42021,42022,42032,42036</WarningsAsErrors> </PropertyGroup> To this in VS2010: <PropertyGroup Condition=" '$(Configuration)|$(Platform)' == 'Debug|AnyCPU' "> <DebugSymbols>true</DebugSymbols> <DebugType>full</DebugType> <DefineDebug>true</DefineDebug> <DefineTrace>true</DefineTrace> <OutputPath>bin\Debug\</OutputPath> <DocumentationFile>CustomerManager.xml</DocumentationFile> <NoWarn>42353,42354,42355</NoWarn> <WarningsAsErrors>41999,42016,42017,42018,42019,42020,42021,42022,42032,42036</WarningsAsErrors> </PropertyGroup> The main difference, is that in the VS2010 version, the 42353,42354,42355 value has been added; Inside the IDE, this manifests itself as the following setting in the Project Properties | Compile section as: "Function returning intrinsic value type without return value" = None This isn't a problem when building code inside Visual Studio 2010, but when trying to build the code through our continuous integration scripts, it fails with the following errors: [msbuild] vbc : Command line error BC2026: warning number '42353' for the option 'nowarn' is either not configurable or not valid [msbuild] vbc : Command line error BC2026: warning number '42354' for the option 'nowarn' is either not configurable or not valid [msbuild] vbc : Command line error BC2026: warning number '42355' for the option 'nowarn' is either not configurable or not valid I couldn't find anything on Google for these messages, which is strange, as I am trying to find out why this is happening. Any suggestions as to why Visual Studio 2010's conversion wizard is doing this?

    Any suggestions on how to become a better Android programmer? I'm past intro tutorials, which mainly focus on how to use pieces of the SDK, but I still struggle to structure big Android apps. Obviously the best use of my time is continuing with my coding projects, but I'm wondering if I should be learning more about Android particulars, solidifying my somewhat shaky Java knowledge, going back to object-oriented fundamentals or patterns...?     I'm referencing a WiX extension in a WiX library project. This WiX library project is itself referenced by my main WiX MSI project. Why does the main project have to also reference the WiX extension, even though it doesn't directly need it? I'd like to keep my wixlib's as self-contained as possible, so that other projects that use them don't need to know about their inner workings. I'm using latest stable release of WiX (3.0.x).

  • Binding a wpf listbox to a combobox

    Hi there, I have created a very basic wpf application that I want to use to record time entries against different projects. I havent used mvvm for this as I think its an overkill. I have a form that contains a combobox and a listbox. I have created a basic entity model like this What I am trying to do is bind the combobox to Project and whenever I select an item from the combobox it updates the listview with the available tasks associated with that project. This is my xaml so far. I dont have any code behind as I have simply clicked on that Data menu and then datasources and dragged and dropped the items over. The application loads ok and the combobox is been populated however nothing is displaying in the listbox.   • Potential annoyances of tab delimited Python source?

    I want to start a new project, and I want this to be my first Python project. I was looking through the style guide, http://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0008/, which "strongly recommends" using a 4-spaces indentation style for new projects. But I just hate this idea! In my opinion, tabs are better for this purpose. What annoyances could crop up one day if another developer wanted to work on my tab-delimited files?

  • String.split() method bug in GWT 2.0.3

    I'm upgrading a GWT project from GWT 1.7.1 to currently newest version 2.0.3. It seems that new GWT broke String.split(String regex) method - I get the following error on the Javascript side: this$static is undefined This happens in this line of my .nocache.js file: if (maxMatch == 0 && this$static.length > 0) { ...which happens to be a part of String split method equivalent in Javascript. Is there a cure for this, apart from doing string splitting myself?
