• Why are downloads from Canonical Partners repository so slow?

  If I need Sun Java, Adobe Flash Plugin or anything else that comes from Canonical Partners the package downloads are painfully slow even small sized packages like the Flash plugin, to speed things up I have to go here: http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/pool/partner/ to find what I want, download the packages with a download manager (which is usually about 20 times faster than the package manager) and then place them in my /var/cache/apt/archives folder I run the package manager afterwards, as long as the right versions of the packages I ask to install are detected in the /var/cache/apt/archives folder they will be installed immediately. I would like to stop doing this, so I am wondering if anyone else has this problem, what could be the cause and if there is a fix. I am located in the Western Caribbean region. I think it would be helpful to note that all other packages coming from the repository I have selected with synaptic download at acceptable speeds.

• Encrypt images before uploading to Dropbox [migrated]

  I want to encrypt a file first before the file will be uploaded to the dropbox. So i have implement the encryption inside the uploading of the codes. However, there is an error after i integrate the codes together. Where did my mistake go wrong? Error at putFileOverwriteRequest and it says The method putFileOverwriteRequest(String, InputStream, long, ProgressListener) in the type DropboxAPI is not applicable for the arguments (String, FileOutputStream, long, new ProgressListener(){}) Another problem is that this FileOutputStream fis = new FileOutputStream(new File("dont know what to put in this field")); i do not know where to put the file so that after i read the file, it will call the path and then upload to the Dropbox. • Viewing the NetBeans Central Registry (Part 2)

  Jens Hofschröer, who has one of the very best NetBeans Platform blogs (if you more or less understand German), and who wrote, sometime ago, the initial version of the Import Statement Organizer, as well as being the main developer of a great gear design & manufacturing tool on the NetBeans Platform in Aachen, commented on my recent blog entry "Viewing the NetBeans Central Registry", where the root Node of the Central Registry is shown in a BeanTreeView, with the words: "I wrapped that Node in a FilterNode to provide the 'position' attribute and the 'file extension'. All Children are wrapped too. Then I used an OutlineView to show these two properties. Great tool to find wrong layer entries." I asked him for the code he describes above and he sent it to me. • How to use AD/GPO/Print Services to "push out" a new printer driver to replace a broken one? How did my server get a broken driver?

  Context: We have an AD/GPO-managed corporate network with a little over a hundred PCs running Windows 7 x64, and a few managed printers. Our Server2008R2 primary domain controller is configured as a print server for them all. Problem: After a recent windows update and restart (no printer driver updates were included) on the DC, a particular shared printer (Lexmark T650) has begin exhibiting some strange behavior. First, it prints a preceding and following blank page for almost every document, on jobs submitted by about half of client machines (no separator page is configured on the server or any of the clients I've seen). Second, whenever someone tries to access "Printing Preferences" on any client, they recieve the following error message (this happens everywhere, 100% of the time, and didn't happen before the update on the DC): Once they click "OK", the prefs screen appears (with no separator page selected) and everything seems fine. I'm not even sure if these two issues are related, but everyone seems affected by one or both of those issues. What I've Tried: I've been hesitant to un-deploy the problem printer, or remove it via GPO, as it's pretty heavily used. I've tried updating (via MS update and our internal WSUS server) client machines and the DC. No printer driver updates have appeared, and no number of updates or restarts on the server or the client seems to have achieved anything other than my boss getting grumpy that I'm bouncing the domain controller so often. I've tried deleting the drivers on the server, and re-installing them from the original source that has worked for the past year...no change. I've tried selecting "New Driver" for one of the shared printers on a client machine, running as domain admin, and pushed the latest driver found by MSupdate back up to the DC. This changed the version number of the driver recorded in the print server manager, but caused no change--on the client I pushed from, or on any other. The error still appears. Question: Why the heck is this happening? Obviously, I got a bad driver from somewhere, but how do I get rid of it? I don't know of any "roll back drivers" functionality for centrally managed print drivers like Windows offers for other devices. How would I a) get this issue resolved on a client, and b) push the fix to the other members of the domain?

• Nautilus won't browse my USB hard drive unless I double click it twice.

  On my laptop, running 10.10, whenever I plug in a thumb drive Nautilus will add an icon on the desktop and open a file manager window with the drive contents. This does not work for my 250Mb external hard drive: the icon is added on the desktop, but no file manager window pops up. Double clicking on the icon just causes some disk activity (on the system drive) and nothing else. Double clicking another time on the icon the file manager eventually opens. At first I thought this was related to nautilus-elementary, but after removing nothing has changed. How do I even start debugging this?

  I am running an Ubuntu ditro inside a VMWare virtual machine with a bridged connection on a windows 7 host. What I am trying to do is to have the virtual machine connect to a VPN, but I'm not having much success. At first, the system was using wicd, but I replaced it with network-manager who's supposed to have OpenVPN support. The problem is, even tho i've purged the wicd installation, there're connections shown in the network manager, and still, I'm able to access the net. I've also added the openvpn data in the network manager tab, but it's shown as never used. PS: when I try to stop and start the NetworkManager service, an error message pops up telling me that there's not such a service, but apt-get tells me i've already installed it...

Emerald Theme Manager is not available in Ubuntu Software Center? I installed Compiz and Compiz Setting Manager, it works ok, but the Windows 3D plugin is not work? The Shutdown/Restart function on Right-Top Panel is not work, is there any solution for this problem? The mouse theme I installed only work in current session, next time i restart computer it change back to default mouse theme? How can i resize the spacing between Desktop Icon? • Managing shots of the player

  I'm currently developing a 2D Jump'n'Run and the situation is the following: The player has different weapons he can collect and is then able to shoot the weapon's projectiles (laser, rockets, whatever). In my previous game (space shooter) I just had a manager class for all the weapon-shots, it stored them in a container and then updates and draws every single one. When the "shoot-event" occurred, the "ProjectileManager" was notified and it added the wanted projectile. The input for player action is handled in the player-class, so the player would have to know the manager to call the function of the manager. I also have a collisionManager, that checks for collisions between, for example, enemies and the projectiles and then notifies these objects. However, I somehow have the feeling, that I shouldn't use this approach and that there might be a better way to handle this. I know, the question is a bit vague, I'm pretty much just looking for input and ideas to improve my design.

• Object hierarchy returned by WCF Service is different than expected

  Good Day Everyone... My understanding may be wrong, but I thought once you applied the correct attributes the DataContractSerializer would render fully-qualified instances back to the caller. The code runs and the objects return. But oddly enough, once I look at the returned objects I noticed the namespacing disappeared and the object-hierarchy being exposed through the (web applications) service reference seems to become "flat" (somehow). Now, I expect this from a web-service…but not through WFC. Of course, my understanding of what WFC can do may be wrong. ...please keep in mind I'm still experimenting with all this. So my questions are… Q: Can I do something within the WFC Service to force the namespacing to render through the (service reference) data client proxy? Q: Or perhaps, am I (merely) consuming the service incorrectly? Q: Is this even possible? I'd use BorderLayout while adding, but the vertical spacing is too far away when I just use directions closest to one another. The output of this code is to create a window, 300,150, place whatever's in the two panels in the exact same spaces. Yes, I realize there's useless code there with setBounds(), but that was just me screwing around with Absolute Positioning, which wasn't working out for me either.

Here's the original post if anyone's interested (this is just a copy from it): MEF Codeplex "Let me first say that I'm completely new to MEF (just discovered it today) and am very happy with it so far. However, I've ran in to a problem that is very frustrating. I'm creating an app that will have a plugin architecture and the plugins will only be stored in a single DLL file (or coded into the main app). The DLL file needs to be able to be recompiled during run-time and the app should recognize this and re-load the plugins (I know this is difficult, but it's a requirement). To accomplish this I took the approach covered http://blog.maartenballiauw.be/category/MEF.aspx there (look for WebServerDirectoryCatalog). Basically the idea is to "monitor the plugins folder, copy the new/modified assemblies to the web application’s /bin folder and instruct MEF to load its exports from there." So now at this point I should be able to re-compile the plugins DLL, drop it in to the Plugins folder, my FileWatcher detect that it's changed, and then copy it into folder "2" and directoryCatalog should point to the new folder. All this actually works! The problem is, even though it seems like every thing is pointed to the right place, my IEnumerable variable is never updated with the new plugins. So close, but yet so far! Any suggestions? I know the downsides of doing it this way, that no dll is actually getting unloaded and causing a memory leak, but it's a Windows App and will probably be started at least once a day, and the plugins are un-likely to change that often, but it's still a requirement from the client that it does this without re-loading the app. Thanks! • Entities used to serialize data have changed. How can the serialized data be upgraded for the new entities?

  Hi, I have a bunch of simple entity instances that I have serialized to a file. In the future, I know that the structure of these entities (ie, maybe I will rename Name to Header or something). The thing is, I don't want to lose the data that I have saved in all these old files. What is the proper way to either load the data from the old entities into new entities upgrade the old files so that they can be used with new entities Note: I think I am stuck with binary serialization, not xml serialization. I can use a dataContractSerializer and do something like [DataMember("bar")] private string foo; and change the name in the code and keep the same name that was used for serialization. But what about the following additional cases: The original entity has new members which can be serialized Some serialized members that were in the original entity are removed Some members have actually changed in function (suppose that the original class had a FirstName and LastName member and it has been refactored to have only a FullName member which combines the two) To handle these, I need some sort of interpreter/translator deserialization class but I have no idea what I should use

Is there any configuration that I can set to achieve this? BTW this code below works when I run it within office network and any network within any home network ... i have tried atleast 5 friends network in Plano, Texas. I want this code to work when run from any network in another country.
