  • ASP.NET application partially reading external configuration

    - by Trent
I have an ASP.NET web app and am attempting to reference an external config (using enterprise application blocks configuration) for some of the configuration but it is not entirely working. I previously had all of the configuration info in the web.config (and it was working), but we are wanting to share some of this configuration information between multiple apps. When I put configurationSource tag in the web.config, and read the configuration through the WebConfigurationManager object, it loads some of the external config info (Logging) but not the connectionStrings and not the custom section I created. So its reading it (logging is working), but some dots aren't being connected and my connection strings aren't coming through. Again, it worked when it was all in the web.config. Any idea what needs to change to be able to reference an external configuration source and have it all come through? • Where can I get feedback and support from other programmers in real time?

    - by cypherblue
I used to work in an office surrounded by a large team of programmers where we all used the same languages and had different expertises. Now that I am on my own forming a startup at home, my productivity is suffering because I miss having people I can talk to for specific help, inspiration and reality checks when working on a coding problem. I don't have access to business incubators or shared (co-working) office spaces for startups so I need to chat with people virtually. Where can I go for real-time chat with other programmers and developers (currently I'm looking for people developing for the web, javascript and python) for live debugging and problem-solving of the tasks I am working on? And what other resources can I use to get fellow programmer support?

  • can't publish my asp.net project?

    - by Sulaiman
dears, when try to publish my mroject I get this error: Error 3 Task failed because "AL.exe" was not found, or the correct Microsoft Windows SDK is not installed. The task is looking for "AL.exe" in the "bin" subdirectory beneath the location specified in the InstallationFolder value of the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A. You may be able to solve the problem by doing one of the following: 1) Install the Microsoft Windows SDK for Windows Server 2008 and .NET Framework 3.5. 2) Install Visual Studio 2008. 3) Manually set the above registry key to the correct location. 4) Pass the correct location into the "ToolPath" parameter of the task.

  • How to deploy a visual studio custom tool?

    - by Aen Sidhe
Hello. I have a my own custom tool for Visual Studio 2008 SP1. It consists of 5 assemblies: 3 assemblies with code that used heavily in my other projects, 1 assembly-wrapper above VS2008 SDK and assembly with the tool. If I'd debug my tool from visual studio, using "Run external program" option with command line "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe" and arguments "/ranu /rootsuffix Exp" all work perfectly. After that I trying to deploy it to my working VS copy, not to experimental hive doing: gacutil /i Asm1.dll for all my assemblies and doing RegAsm Asm1.dll only for assembly with custom tool. Neither of utils prints any error, all work as planned, even registry keys appeared. But my tool don't work even after PC restart. What did I do wrong? Wrapper looks like that: [ComVisible(true)] public abstract class CustomToolBase : IVsSingleFileGenerator, IObjectWithSite { #region IVsSingleFileGenerator Members int IVsSingleFileGenerator.DefaultExtension(out string pbstrDefaultExtension) { pbstrDefaultExtension = ".cs"; return 0; } int IVsSingleFileGenerator.Generate(string wszInputFilePath, string bstrInputFileContents, string wszDefaultNamespace, IntPtr[] rgbOutputFileContents, out uint pcbOutput, IVsGeneratorProgress pGenerateProgress) { GenerationEventArgs gea = new GenerationEventArgs( bstrInputFileContents, wszInputFilePath, wszDefaultNamespace, new ServiceProvider(Site as Microsoft.VisualStudio.OLE.Interop.IServiceProvider) .GetService(typeof(ProjectItem)) as ProjectItem, new GenerationProgressFacade(pGenerateProgress) ); if (OnGenerateCode != null) { OnGenerateCode(this, gea); } byte[] bytes = gea.GetOutputCodeBytes(); int outputLength = bytes.Length; rgbOutputFileContents[0] = Marshal.AllocCoTaskMem(outputLength); Marshal.Copy(bytes, 0, rgbOutputFileContents[0], outputLength); pcbOutput = (uint)outputLength; return VSConstants.S_OK; } #endregion #region IObjectWithSite Members void IObjectWithSite.GetSite(ref Guid riid, out IntPtr ppvSite) { IntPtr pUnk = Marshal.GetIUnknownForObject(Site); IntPtr intPointer = IntPtr.Zero; Marshal.QueryInterface(pUnk, ref riid, out intPointer); ppvSite = intPointer; } void IObjectWithSite.SetSite(object pUnkSite) { Site = pUnkSite; } #endregion #region Public Members public object Site { get; private set; } public event EventHandler<GenerationEventArgs> OnGenerateCode; [ComRegisterFunction] public static void Register(Type type) { using (var parent = Registry.LocalMachine.OpenSubKey(@"Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0", true)) foreach (CustomToolRegistrationAttribute ourData in type.GetCustomAttributes(typeof(CustomToolRegistrationAttribute), false)) ourData.Register(x => parent.CreateSubKey(x), (x, name, value) => x.SetValue(name, value)); } [ComUnregisterFunction] public static void Unregister(Type type) { using (var parent = Registry.LocalMachine.OpenSubKey(@"Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0", true)) foreach (CustomToolRegistrationAttribute ourData in type.GetCustomAttributes(typeof(CustomToolRegistrationAttribute), false)) ourData.Unregister(x => parent.DeleteSubKey(x, false)); } #endregion } My tool code: [ComVisible(true)] [Guid("55A6C192-D29F-4e22-84DA-DBAF314ED5C3")] [CustomToolRegistration(ToolName, typeof(TransportGeneratorTool))] [ProvideObject(typeof(TransportGeneratorTool))] public class TransportGeneratorTool : CustomToolBase { private const string ToolName = "TransportGeneratorTool"; public TransportGeneratorTool() { OnGenerateCode += GenerateCode; } private static void GenerateCode(object s, GenerationEventArgs e) { try { var serializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof (Parser.System)); using (var reader = new StringReader(e.InputText)) using (var writer = new StringWriter(e.OutputCode)) { Generator.System = (Parser.System) serializer.Deserialize(reader); Generator.System.Namespace = e.Namespace; Generator.GenerateSource(writer); } } catch (Exception ex) { e.Progress.GenerateError(ex.ToString()); } } } Resulting registry keys: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0\Generators] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0\Generators\{FAE04EC1-301F-11D3-BF4B-00C04F79EFBC}] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0\Generators\{FAE04EC1-301F-11D3-BF4B-00C04F79EFBC}\TransportGeneratorTool] @="TransportGeneratorTool" "CLSID"="{55a6c192-d29f-4e22-84da-dbaf314ed5c3}" "GeneratesDesignTimeSource"=dword:00000001 "GeneratesSharedDesignTimeSource"=dword:00000001

  • .NET Single Line Logging (ala Trace.Write/WriteLine) using Instrumentation.Logging

    - by KnownColor
Hello Everyone, My question is whether it is possible to get line/multiline (very unsure of correct term for this) behaviour of the Trace.Write and Trace.WriteLine methods but using the Microsoft Instrumentation Logging framework in .NET 2.0. Desired Output Hello World! Oh Hai. What I Currently Have Trace.Write("Hello "); Trace.WriteLine("World!"); Trace.Write("Oh Hai."); I would prefer to use instrumentation to log rather than writing to a log file using Debug.Trace. EDIT: By Instrumentation Logging I mean using a 'loggingConfiguration' block in my App.config and writing Log Entries using using Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Logging.Logger.Write(LogEntry logEntry); Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Logging.Configuration.FlatFileTraceListenerData, Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Logging, Version=2.0.0.0 for example. • Lightweight use of Enterprise Library TraceListeners

    - by gWiz
Is it possible to use the Enterprise Library 4.1 TraceListeners without using the entire Enterprise Library Logging AB? I'd prefer to simply use .NET Diagnostics Tracing, but would like to setup a listener that sends emails on Error events. I figured I could use the Enterprise Library EmailTraceListener. However, my initial attempts to configure it have failed. Here's what I hoped would work: <system.diagnostics> <trace autoflush="false" /> <sources> <source name="SampleSource" switchValue="Verbose" > <listeners> <add name="textFileListener" /> <add name="emailListener" /> </listeners> </source> </sources> <sharedListeners> <add name="textFileListener" type="System.Diagnostics.TextWriterTraceListener" initializeData="..\trace.log" traceOutputOptions="DateTime"> <filter type="System.Diagnostics.EventTypeFilter" initializeData="Verbose" /> </add> <add name="emailListener" type="Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Logging.TraceListeners.EmailTraceListener, Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Logging" toAddress="[email protected]" fromAddress="[email protected]" smtpServer="mail.example.com" > <filter type="System.Diagnostics.EventTypeFilter" initializeData="Verbose" /> </add> </sharedListeners> </system.diagnostics> However I get [ArgumentException: The parameter 'address' cannot be an empty string. Parameter name: address] System.Net.Mail.MailAddress..ctor(String address, String displayName, Encoding displayNameEncoding) +1098157 System.Net.Mail.MailAddress..ctor(String address) +8 Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Logging.Configuration.EmailMessage.CreateMailMessage() +256 Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Logging.Configuration.EmailMessage.Send() +39 Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Logging.TraceListeners.EmailTraceListener.Write(String message) +96 System.Diagnostics.TraceListener.WriteHeader(String source, TraceEventType eventType, Int32 id) +184 System.Diagnostics.TraceListener.TraceEvent(TraceEventCache eventCache, String source, TraceEventType eventType, Int32 id, String format, Object[] args) +63 System.Diagnostics.TraceSource.TraceEvent(TraceEventType eventType, Int32 id, String format, Object[] args) +198 System.Diagnostics.TraceSource.TraceInformation(String message) +14 Which leads me to believe the .NET Tracing code does not care about the "non-standard" config attributes I've supplied for emailListener. I also tried adding the appropriate LAB configSection declaration and: <loggingConfiguration> <listeners> <add toAddress="[email protected]" fromAddress="[email protected]" smtpServer="mail.example.com" type="Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Logging.TraceListeners.EmailTraceListener, Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Logging" name="emailListener" /> </listeners> </loggingConfiguration> This also results in the same exception. I figure it's possible to programmatically configure the EmailTraceListener, but I prefer this to be config-driven. I also understand I can implement my own derivative of TraceListener. So, is it possible to use the Ent Lib TraceListeners, without using the whole Ent Lib LAB, and configure them from the config file? Update: After examining the code, I have discovered it is not possible. The Ent Lib TraceListeners do not actually utilize the config attributes they specify in overriding TraceListener.GetSupportedAttributes(), despite the recommendations in the .NET TraceListener documentation. Bug filed.

  • Tips for adapting Date table to Power View forecasting #powerview #powerbi

    - by Marco Russo (SQLBI)
During the keynote of the PASS Business Analytics Conference, Amir Netz presented the new forecasting capabilities in Power View for Office 365. I immediately tried the new feature (which was immediately available, a welcome surprise in a Microsoft announcement for a new release) and I had several issues trying to use existing data models. The forecasting has a few requirements that are not compatible with the “best practices” commonly used for a calendar table until this announcement. For example, if you have a Year-Month-Day hierarchy and you want to display a line chart aggregating data at the month level, you use a column containing month and year as a string (e.g. May 2014) sorted by a numeric column (such as 201405). Such a column cannot be used in the x-axis of a line chart for forecasting, because you need a date or numeric column. There are also other requirements and I wrote the article Prepare Data for Power View Forecasting in Power BI on SQLBI, describing how to create columns that can be used with the new forecasting capabilities in Power View for Office 365.

It would be nice to be able to set both ways, i.e. with databinding or in the derived control code behind, but neither work. With the data binding, it doesn't work. If I try in the code behind I get a null reference to 'header'. This is silverlight 4 (not sure if that makes a difference) Any suggestions on how to do with with both databinding and in code ? Cheers

This is not working for me: public bool createRegistry() { if (!registryExists()) { Microsoft.Win32.Registry.LocalMachine.CreateSubKey("Software\\xelo\\"); Microsoft.Win32.Registry.LocalMachine.OpenSubKey("Software\\xelo").SetValue("hostname", (string)hostname, Microsoft.Win32.RegistryValueKind.String); return true; } else { return updateRegistry(); } } The exception error is to do with Not Authorized to do this. Any Help would be apreaciated Exeption: System.UnauthorizedAccessException | "Cannot write to the registry key"

I have two Access versions installed: Microsoft Access XP (aka 2002, aka version 10.0) Microsoft Access 2007 (aka version 12.0) Wenn I let an Application run in Microsoft Access XP and call Dim o As Object Set o = CreateObject("Access.Application.10") Debug.print o.version This returns 12.0 instead of 10.0! Solutions anybody? I don't get this.

  • Implicit and Explicit implementations for Multiple Interface inheritance

    Following C#.NET demo explains you all the scenarios for implementation of Interface methods to classes. There are two ways you can implement a interface method to a class. 1. Implicit Implementation 2. Explicit Implementation. Please go though the sample. using System; namespace ImpExpTest {     class Program     {         static void Main(string[] args)         {             C o3 = new C();             Console.WriteLine(o3.fu());             I1 o1 = new C();             Console.WriteLine(o1.fu());             I2 o2 = new C();             Console.WriteLine(o2.fu());             var o4 = new C();       //var is considered as C             Console.WriteLine(o4.fu());             var o5 = (I1)new C();   //var is considered as I1             Console.WriteLine(o5.fu());             var o6 = (I2)new C();   //var is considered as I2             Console.WriteLine(o6.fu());             D o7 = new D();             Console.WriteLine(o7.fu());             I1 o8 = new D();             Console.WriteLine(o8.fu());             I2 o9 = new D();             Console.WriteLine(o9.fu());         }     }     interface I1     {         string fu();     }     interface I2     {         string fu();     }     class C : I1, I2     {         #region Imicitly Defined I1 Members         public string fu()         {             return "Hello C"         }         #endregion Imicitly Defined I1 Members         #region Explicitly Defined I1 Members         string I1.fu()         {             return "Hello from I1";         }         #endregion Explicitly Defined I1 Members         #region Explicitly Defined I2 Members         string I2.fu()         {             return "Hello from I2";         }         #endregion Explicitly Defined I2 Members     }     class D : C     {         #region Imicitly Defined I1 Members         public string fu()         {             return "Hello from D";         }         #endregion Imicitly Defined I1 Members     } } Output:- Hello C Hello from I1 Hello from I2 Hello C Hello from I1 Hello from I2 Hello from D Hello from I1 Hello from I2 span.fullpost {display:none;}

  • Open XML at TechEd 2010

Open XML was a big part of my first session at TechEd 2010 called, "Office 2010: Developing the Next Wave of Productivity Solutions". The thing that gets the biggest reaction is the Open XML SDK 2.0 "Productivity Tool"-- especially the ability to reflect over an Office document to produce C# code that will produce the target document. Here's the scenario: I have a Word document (Excel spreadsheet, PowerPoint deck) that a user produced manually. I want to be able to produce that same document...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? We already have over 80 articles in several categories including Silverlight. Take a look: here.
