• Normalized Device Coordinates to window coordinates

  I just read some stuff about the theory behind 3d graphics. As I understand it, normalized device coordinates (NDC) are coordinates that describe a point in the interval from -1 to 1 on both the horizontal and vertical axis. On the other hand window coordinates describe a point somewhere between (0,0) and (width,height) of the window. So my formula to convert a point from the NDC coordinate system to the window system would be xwin = width + xndc * 0.5 * width ywin = height + ynfv * 0.5 * height The problem now is that in the OpenGL documentation for glViewport there is an other formula: xwin = ( xndc + 1 ) * width * 0.5 + x ywin = ( yndc + 1 ) * height * 0.5 + y Now I'm wondering what I am getting wrong. Especially I'm wondering what the additional "x" and "y" mean. Hope the question isn't too "not programming related", but I thought somehow it is related to graphics programming.

• How to customize notches in ggplot boxplot

  I had a question on how to change/customize the upper and lower limit of a notch on a boxplot created by ggplot2. I looked through the function stat_boxplot and found that ggplot calculates the notch limits with the equation median +/- 1.58 * iqr / sqrt(n). However instead of that equation I wanted to change it with my own set of upper and lower notch limits. My data has 4 factors and for each factor I calculated the median and did a bootstrap to get a 95% confidence interval of that median. Thus in the end I would like to change every boxplot to have its own unique notch upper and lower limit. I'm not sure if this is even possible in ggplot and was wondering if people have an idea on how to do this? Thanks again!

• Thread Suicide on Shutdown?

  I have a java.util.Timer running at a fixed interval. I have added a Runtime#addShutdownHook and it shuts down when the VM ends normally or abnormally. However, it keeps the VM alive when a main terminates, unless I insist by doing a System.exit in the main. Is there any way for me to check if I'm the last Thread standing, or some other way to avoid altering a main that would exit normally on finish? Note: I know a lot of people believe that java.util.Timer is deprecated (it's not), but unless your alternative helps me solve this problem...

• How can I delete a file in Sinatra after it has been sent via send_file?

  I have a simple sinatra application that needs to generate a file (via an external process), send that file to the browser, and finally, delete the file from the filesystem. Something along these lines: class MyApp < Sinatra::Base get '/generate-file' do # calls out to an external process, # and returns the path to the generated file file_path = generate_the_file() # send the file to the browser send_file(file_path) # remove the generated file, so we don't # completely fill up the filesystem. File.delete(file_path) # File.delete is never called. end end It seems, however, that the send_file call completes the request, and any code after it does not get run. Is there some way to ensure that the generated file is cleaned up after it has been successfully sent to the browser? Or will I need to resort to a cron job running a cleanup script on some interval?

• Check for new mails in Hotmail using OpenPop.NET

  I was advised to use OpenPop lib to fetch my mail from hotmail. But I could'nt find any better way to check for new mail except disconnecting and reconnecting again. And there, I found a problem, Hotmail doesn't allow more than 1 pop3 login each 15 minutes. I want to know if it's possible to get the new mail without disconnecting and reconnecting to their pop3 server.   I have a counter that counts up every 1 second and add 1 to an int. • jQuery/JavaScript: Trigger when preloaded

  Hello there, jQuery has the .ready() function, but I am unsure whether this is what I need: I set a default background image in CSS (imange 1 out of 4), once document is loaded (images and all, not only DOM); I want to start preloading background image 2 out of 4. Once that is loaded, I want to fade image 1 into image 2. Then I want to preload the next image (3 out of 4), once that is loaded, I want to fade from background image 2 into image 3, and finally preload image 4. Once image 4 is loaded, i would like to fade image 3 into image 4. After that, I want to cycle between the images with a set time interval. What strategy would I use to solve this? .load() function? • How should I display invalid options?

  I've got a WinForms client-server app that displays various offers in a list. Every user (client) has a "rating". An offer consists of various data including a minimum and maximum rating. If a user's rating does not fall in that interval, he should not be able to take the offer. Of course I could just perform some server filtering and send a list of offers prefiltered for each user to the client application. But that would surely, and rightfully, lead to confused requests "Why isn't this offer showing up? I know it exists, it shows up on [other user]'s screen." How should I handle this? My favorite solution so far is to grey out the offer and add a tooltip "You can't take this offer because your rating is too high/low" while displaying greyed-out offers at the bottom of the list to leave the actually valid offers easily visible on top of the list.

• Proper chart scaling in Reporting Services 2005

  I'm developing a simple bar-chart in Reporting Services 2005 with a stored procedure as data-source. The values in this graph can be both positive and negative, and can span a very big range, and hence I cannot specify any non-dynamic scale that will work for all scenarios. The problem I'm facing is that the automatic scaling pretty much sucks. I get no line to show where the zero-point is, and the y-scale labels are from top to bottom: 8818 -191181 -391181 etc etc... So my question is, what is the best approach to make the scale more adapted to human reading? Is there any guide out there? Does reporting services 2008 handle this better? Also, moving away from Reporting Services is not really an option. I realize how to put values and expression in the max, min, and the gridline interval fields, although its more of a question what expressions I should put there.

  I am working on scroll. I have made a program wherein if the scroll box is in particular range of the panel then it automatically moves to a particular position in the slider. For eg, I have a panel of size 500. the scroll has height of 100. Now the total intervals are 5. Now if i slide the scroll box at a position 225 then i want that it automatically slides to the start of that interval that is at position 200. or if i slide to position 450 then instead of staying there it goes to position 400. Is it possible?

I haven't posted any source here, as you can freely see all that is there on the link. :-) Statement:I have a web page at http://agrimgupta.com/antaragni/ Disclaimer: Pardon me for the pathetic coding on that page. ;-) It was done on a very short interval. Improvements will be done at a later stage. Observation: This page is functioning normally on my localhost on all browsers. Problem: IE 8 is crawling (nearly hanging) while loading this page from the website. Although it is working fine on localhost. When on the website, It fails to render the mouseover effects, doing them in almost what seems like a minute. Question: How to resolve this stuck up of IE? It is necessary to resolve this. • Windows service installed successfully but not responding after started.

  I have a windows service written in C#, .Net framework 2.0. I installed it on three machines and it worked fine but on one machine (with .Net framework 2.0) the setup has installed the service successfully but the service is not responding after I start it. I check for this by checking whether a log file is created at a specific path insribed in the config file or not. This log file is created everytime the timer elapses the interval time. I'm unable to figure out the reason. Have checked all the parameters but unable to get any solution to this. The funny thing is that the same setup is running well on other machines. P.S.: I have admin access on all the servers I'm installing this service on.

  Hi. I subscribe to usb inserted event like this select * FROM __INSTANCECREATIONEVENT WITHIN 3 WHERE TARGETINSTANCE ISA Win32_DiskDrive After inserting usb flash it blinks every 3 seconds. This is polling interval and intrinsic events work by polling object that's in query. Now, we know these types of events may be resource expensive. (Putting value greater then 3 sometimes chokes these events and client program doesn't get notified). Are there other ways to do that, so that usb doesn't get scanned all the time? May be there some extrinsic events available? Right now the only solution I see is to unsubscribe from event above once it trigerred and resubscribe to it in __INSTANCEDELETIONEVENT handler. • How to schedule hundreds of thousands of tasks?

  We have hundreds of thousands of tasks that need to be run at a variety of arbitrary intervals, some every hour, some every day, and so on. The tasks are resource intensive and need to be distributed across many machines. Right now tasks are stored in a database with an "execute at this time" timestamp. To find tasks that need to be executed, we query the database for jobs that are due to be executed, then update the timestamps when the task is complete. Naturally this leads to a substantial write load on the database. As far as I can tell, we are looking for something to release tasks into a queue at a set interval. (Workers could then request tasks from that queue.) What is the best way to schedule recurring tasks at scale? For what it's worth we're largely using Python, although we have no problems using components (RabbitMQ?) written in other languages.

My question is if I got a 1-2 lakh entry in this table is this query is sufficient for the purpose ? or this query will take time to execute ? In most cases I have to show last 2 days data + periodically ( interval of 10 mins ) checking for updates with ajax from this table ... Please help Thanks

  I need to import records stored in a MySQL Database that I do not maintain into my Sql Server 2005 database (x64) We should import the records at an interval basis (probably 1 hour). What would be the best solution to perform the regular import? Windows Service (using reference MySql.data dll) Windows Client (could make it automated) SQL Extended Stored Procedure (is it possible to reference the MySQL.data dll?) SSIS package - Install MySQL ODBC driver The problem with #4 is that I do not really want to support the ODBC driver on the sql server. I'm not sure if you can even reference the x86 MySql.data dll into a x64 sql server process for #3. (Or if you can even reference that dll within a sql server project)

• How to make shell output redirect (>) write while script is still running?

  I wrote a short script that never terminates. This script continuously generates output that I have to check on every now and then. I'm running it on a lab computer through SSH, and redirecting the output to a file in my public_html folder on that machine. python script.py > ~/public_html/results.txt However, the results don't show up immediately when I refresh the address. The results show up when I terminate the program, but as I said, it doesn't halt by itself. Is that redirect (>) being lazy with with writing? Is there a way to continuously (or with an interval) update the results in the file? Or is it the webserver that doesn't update the file while it is still being written?

  How does one create an AsyncTask which keeps running itself after a fixed interval of time. For eg. get data from server every 5 minutes and give notification to caller thread that it has received the data. I searched on the forum but could not find much. What I have gathered so far is that 1) A UI thread will call AsyncTask 2) onPrExecute for UI thread access before executing 3) OnPostExecute for UI thread access after executing I dont need to show any progress update to the user. • SQL SERVER – When are Statistics Updated – What triggers Statistics to Update

  If you are an SQL Server Consultant/Trainer involved with Performance Tuning and Query Optimization, I am sure you have faced the following questions many times. When is statistics updated? What is the interval of Statistics update? What is the algorithm behind update statistics? These are the puzzling questions and more. I searched the Internet as well many official MS documents in order to find answers. All of them have provided almost similar algorithm. However, at many places, I have seen a bit of variation in algorithm as well. I have finally compiled the list of various algorithms and decided to share what was the most common “factor” in all of them. I would like to ask for your suggestions as whether following the details, when Statistics is updated, are accurate or not. I will update this blog post with accurate information after receiving your ideas. The answer I have found here is when statistics are expired and not when they are automatically updated. I need your help here to answer when they are updated. Permanent table If the table has no rows, statistics is updated when there is a single change in table. If the number of rows in a table is less than 500, statistics is updated for every 500 changes in table. If the number of rows in table is more than 500, statistics is updated for every 500+20% of rows changes in table. Temporary table If the table has no rows, statistics is updated when there is a single change in table. If the number of rows in table is less than 6, statistics is updated for every 6 changes in table. If the number of rows in table is less than 500, statistics is updated for every 500 changes in table. If the number of rows in table is more than 500, statistics is updated for every 500+20% of rows changes in table. Table variable There is no statistics for Table Variables. If you want to read further about statistics, I suggest that you read the white paper Statistics Used by the Query Optimizer in Microsoft SQL Server 2008. • Add a Sleep Timer to Windows 7 Media Center

  Do you make it a habit of falling asleep at night while watching Windows Media Center? Today we are going to take a look at the MC7 Sleep Timer for Windows 7 Media Center. This simple little plugin allows you to schedule an automatic shutdown time in Media Center. Note: At this point MC7 Sleep Timer doesn’t work with extenders. If you’re using ClamAV or Panda it may detect this plugin as a virus, we’ve tested it and this is a false positive for these two antivirus apps. Installation and Usage Download and install MC7 Sleep Timer. (See download below) After the installation is finished, you will find MC7 Sleep Timer located in the Media Center Extras Library. Click on the tile to open the timer and configure your settings. The MC7 Sleep Timer will open in full screen mode. You can choose to shutdown the PC after 30 or 60 minutes, create a custom length shutdown timer at any 5 minute interval, or select the exact time you want the PC to shutdown.  After setting your PC to shutdown, you’ll get an audio confirmation. To set a custom timer length, scroll to the “Custom timer” option and click right or left on your Media Center remote or, the right or left arrow keys, to choose how many minutes before shutdown. To schedule a shutdown for a certain time, browse to the “Shutdown at time” button, and scroll right or left with the arrow keys on the keyboard or remote. When you’ve chosen your time, hit “Enter” on the keyboard or “OK” on the remote.   Clicking the “Monitor Off” button will turn off only the monitor and “Cancel Timer” will cancel your shutdown request. Conclusion If you often find yourself falling asleep every night watching Media Center and then fumbling and stumbling in the middle of the night to shutdown your computer, MC7 Sleep timer might just be a perfect addition to your Media Center setup.
