  • C#/.NET Little Wonders: Static Char Methods

    - by James Michael Hare
Once again, in this series of posts I look at the parts of the .NET Framework that may seem trivial, but can help improve your code by making it easier to write and maintain. The index of all my past little wonders posts can be found here. Often times in our code we deal with the bigger classes and types in the BCL, and occasionally forgot that there are some nice methods on the primitive types as well.  Today we will discuss some of the handy static methods that exist on the char (the C# alias of System.Char) type. The Background I was examining a piece of code this week where I saw the following: 1: // need to get the 5th (offset 4) character in upper case 2: var type = symbol.Substring(4, 1).ToUpper(); 3:  4: // test to see if the type is P 5: if (type == "P") 6: { 7: // ... do something with P type... 8: } Is there really any error in this code?  No, but it still struck me wrong because it is allocating two very short-lived throw-away strings, just to store and manipulate a single char: The call to Substring() generates a new string of length 1 The call to ToUpper() generates a new upper-case version of the string from Step 1. In my mind this is similar to using ToUpper() to do a case-insensitive compare: it isn’t wrong, it’s just much heavier than it needs to be (for more info on case-insensitive compares, see #2 in 5 More Little Wonders). One of my favorite books is the C++ Coding Standards: 101 Rules, Guidelines, and Best Practices by Sutter and Alexandrescu.  True, it’s about C++ standards, but there’s also some great general programming advice in there, including two rules I love:         8. Don’t Optimize Prematurely         9. Don’t Pessimize Prematurely We all know what #8 means: don’t optimize when there is no immediate need, especially at the expense of readability and maintainability.  I firmly believe this and in the axiom: it’s easier to make correct code fast than to make fast code correct.  Optimizing code to the point that it becomes difficult to maintain often gains little and often gives you little bang for the buck. But what about #9?  Well, for that they state: “All other things being equal, notably code complexity and readability, certain efficient design patterns and coding idioms should just flow naturally from your fingertips and are no harder to write then the pessimized alternatives. This is not premature optimization; it is avoiding gratuitous pessimization.” Or, if I may paraphrase: “where it doesn’t increase the code complexity and readability, prefer the more efficient option”. The example code above was one of those times I feel where we are violating a tacit C# coding idiom: avoid creating unnecessary temporary strings.  The code creates temporary strings to hold one char, which is just unnecessary.  I think the original coder thought he had to do this because ToUpper() is an instance method on string but not on char.  What he didn’t know, however, is that ToUpper() does exist on char, it’s just a static method instead (though you could write an extension method to make it look instance-ish). This leads me (in a long-winded way) to my Little Wonders for the day… Static Methods of System.Char So let’s look at some of these handy, and often overlooked, static methods on the char type: IsDigit(), IsLetter(), IsLetterOrDigit(), IsPunctuation(), IsWhiteSpace() Methods to tell you whether a char (or position in a string) belongs to a category of characters. IsLower(), IsUpper() Methods that check if a char (or position in a string) is lower or upper case ToLower(), ToUpper() Methods that convert a single char to the lower or upper equivalent. For example, if you wanted to see if a string contained any lower case characters, you could do the following: 1: if (symbol.Any(c => char.IsLower(c))) 2: { 3: // ... 4: } Which, incidentally, we could use a method group to shorten the expression to: 1: if (symbol.Any(char.IsLower)) 2: { 3: // ... 4: } Or, if you wanted to verify that all of the characters in a string are digits: 1: if (symbol.All(char.IsDigit)) 2: { 3: // ... 4: } Also, for the IsXxx() methods, there are overloads that take either a char, or a string and an index, this means that these two calls are logically identical: 1: // check given a character 2: if (char.IsUpper(symbol[0])) { ... } 3:  4: // check given a string and index 5: if (char.IsUpper(symbol, 0)) { ... } Obviously, if you just have a char, then you’d just use the first form.  But if you have a string you can use either form equally well. As a side note, care should be taken when examining all the available static methods on the System.Char type, as some seem to be redundant but actually have very different purposes.  For example, there are IsDigit() and IsNumeric() methods, which sound the same on the surface, but give you different results. IsDigit() returns true if it is a base-10 digit character (‘0’, ‘1’, … ‘9’) where IsNumeric() returns true if it’s any numeric character including the characters for ½, ¼, etc. Summary To come full circle back to our opening example, I would have preferred the code be written like this: 1: // grab 5th char and take upper case version of it 2: var type = char.ToUpper(symbol[4]); 3:  4: if (type == 'P') 5: { 6: // ... do something with P type... 7: } Not only is it just as readable (if not more so), but it performs over 3x faster on my machine:    1,000,000 iterations of char method took: 30 ms, 0.000050 ms/item.    1,000,000 iterations of string method took: 101 ms, 0.000101 ms/item. It’s not only immediately faster because we don’t allocate temporary strings, but as an added bonus there less garbage to collect later as well.  To me this qualifies as a case where we are using a common C# performance idiom (don’t create unnecessary temporary strings) to make our code better. • How to position an element next to another an element of undefined position?

    - by allin
Hi, I am very new to html/xml/css and I'm trying my best to teach myself. However, I have run into a problem that a Google search could not solve. I would like to position a small image in a fixed location relative to another element(?) I believe this is the code of the element i want to position the second element relative to. #wrap { width:550px; background-color:#fff; margin:0 auto; padding:0; border-right:1px solid #ccc; border-left:1px solid #ccc; } #container { width: 500px; margin:0 auto; padding: 25px; font-size:.85em; background-color: #fff; } and this is partial code I'm trying to edit to position .xyz to the right of "#wrap" .xyz { position: ???; top: 200px; right: ???; _position: ???; _margin: ???; _text-align: right; z-index: 1337; } my search of SOF has lead me to believe i'm supposed to do something along the lines of this - http://stackoverflow.com/questions/104953/position-an-html-element-relative-to-its-container-using-css - but i haven't been able to. I greatly appreciate any help you may offer. Hopefully I've explained my problem properly.

  • What's the best way to convert a .eps (CMYK) to a .jpg (RGB) with Image Magick

    - by Slinky
Hi All, I have a bunch of .eps files (CMYK) that I need to convert to .jpg (RGB) files. The following command sometimes gives me under or over saturated .jpg images, when compared to the source EPS file: $cmd = "convert -density 300 -quality 100% -colorspace RGB ".$epsURL." -flatten -strip ".$convertedURL; Is there a smarter way to do this such that the converted image will have the same qualities as the source EPS file? • Handles Comparison: empty classes vs. undefined classes vs. void*

    - by Nawaz
Microsoft's GDI+ defines many empty classes to be treated as handles internally. For example, (source GdiPlusGpStubs.h) //Approach 1 class GpGraphics {}; class GpBrush {}; class GpTexture : public GpBrush {}; class GpSolidFill : public GpBrush {}; class GpLineGradient : public GpBrush {}; class GpPathGradient : public GpBrush {}; class GpHatch : public GpBrush {}; class GpPen {}; class GpCustomLineCap {}; There are other two ways to define handles. They're, //Approach 2 class BOOK; //no need to define it! typedef BOOK *PBOOK; typedef PBOOK HBOOK; //handle to be used internally //Approach 3 typedef void* PVOID; typedef PVOID HBOOK; //handle to be used internally I just want to know the advantages and disadvantages of each of these approaches. One advantage with Microsoft's approach is that, they can define type-safe hierarchy of handles using empty classes, which (I think) is not possible with the other two approaches. What else? EDIT: One advantage with the second approach (i.e using incomplete classes) is that we can prevent clients from dereferencing the handles (that means, this approach appears to support encapsulation strongly, I suppose). The code would not even compile if one attempts to dereference handles. What else?

  • How do I keep a count of undefined strings within a loop using PHP?

    - by mike
I'm using a loop within a loop to try to generate keyword combinations and also find the ones that have been used the most. My outside loop just queries a list of keywords (lets use "chicago" as our first keyword, 3 records were found). The inside loop finds all the records in the "posts" table where keyword = "chicago". Within this loop, I need to generate strings based on info I found in the database. Which, would look something like "chicago bulls", "chicago bears", "chicago cubs" etc... I know how to do everything up until this point, but how do I temporary hold these generated strings and count how many times they have been found within the 3 records?

  • php regex to split invoice line item description

    - by user1053700
I am attempting to split strings like the following: An item (Item A) which may contain 89798 numbers and letters @ $550.00 4 of Item B @ $420.00 476584 of Item C, with a larger quantity and different currency symbol @ £420.00 into: array( 0 => 1 1 => "some item which may contain 89798 numbers and letters" 2 => $550.00 ); does that make sense? I am looking for a regex pattern which will split the quantity, description, and price (including symbol). the strings will always be: qty x description @ price+symbol so i assume the regex would be something like: `(match a number and only a number) x (get description letters and numbers before the @ symbol) @ (match the currency symbol and price)` How should I approach this?

  • Ruby Metaprogramming

    - by Veerendra Manikonda
I am having a method which returns the price of a given symbol and i am writing a test for that method. This is my test def setup @asset = NetAssetValue.new end def test_retrieve_price_for_symbol_YHOO assert_equal(33.987, @asset.retrieve_price_for_a_symbol('YHOO')) end def test_retrive_price_for_YHOO def self.retrieve_price_for_a_symbol(symbol) 33.77 end assert_equal(33.97, @asset.retrieve_price_for_a_symbol('YHOO')) end This is my method. def retrieve_price_for_a_symbol(symbol) symbol_price = { "YHOO" => 33.987, "UPS" => 35.345, "T" => 80.90 } raise Exception if(symbol_price[symbol].nil?) symbol_price[symbol] end I am trying to mock the retrieve_price_for_a_symbol method by writing same method in test class but when i call it, the call is happening to method in main class not in the test class. How do I add that method to meta class from test and how do i call it? Please help.

  • Force an array to recalcuate length after sort

    - by Rhyono
    If you take an array and do the following: arr = []; arr[100] = 1; The length will be 101, which makes sense due to 0-99 being set as undefined Now if we sort that array: arr.sort() it will look like this: [1, undefined x100] since keys are not preserved. However, the length is still 101, since the undefined have all been moved to the end, instead of removed. Is this behavior intentional and if so: is there a built-in function that removes undefined and recalculates and why is it intentional? I am not asking how to write my own function to recalculate length. A sorted array's length can easily be forced with for (x = 0; arr[x] != undefined; x++);arr.length = x;

  • iPhone nextResponder switching keyboards

    - by Steve
iPhone SDK 3.2 Beta 4 (I am downloading B5 to see if this clears this up) To me this seems like a bug, but maybe I am missing something. The linked test program illustrates this problem. I have several UITextFields that I am linking together using the Tag property. In textFieldShouldReturn I get the next UITextField and set it as the active responder. The problem arises with the IB settings for the keyboard type. In the test program I have the first two text fields set to default. The next three text fields are set to numeric and symbols. As you move into the set (bottom three) that use the numeric/symbol keyboard the keyboard will toggle between numeric/symbol and the default. What I mean is the third field will display the numeric/symbol. The second Default. The third numeric/symbol. If you add more text fields setup as numeric/symbol this will continue on. Now if you tab into the forth field (it should bring up the default) and then manually select the numeric/symbol. The problem will disappear. I have tried various things to track down why the problem disappears. No luck so far. Sample Project

  • Linking errors when building against Boost Unit Test Framework

    - by Rafid
I am trying to use Boost Unit Test Framework by building a stand alone library as detailed here: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_35_0/libs/test/doc/components/utf/compilation.html So I created a VC library project containing the mentioned files and build it and it was successful. Then I created a test project and referenced the library project I just created, but when I tried to build it, I got the following linking errors: 1>Type.obj : error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol "bool __cdecl boost::test_tools::tt_detail::check_impl(class boost::test_tools::predicate_result const &,class boost::unit_test::lazy_ostream const &,class boost::unit_test::basic_cstring<char const >,unsigned __int64,enum boost::test_tools::tt_detail::tool_level,enum boost::test_tools::tt_detail::check_type,unsigned __int64,...)" Any ideas?!

  • Understanding Symbols In Ruby

    - by Kezzer
Despite reading this article, I'm still confused as to the representation of the data in memory when it comes to using symbols. If a symbol, two of them contained in different objects, exist in the same memory location, then how is it that they contain different values? I'd have expected the same memory location to contain the same value. As a quote from the link: Unlike strings, symbols of the same name are initialized and exist in memory only once during a session of ruby I just don't understand how it manages to differentiate the values contained in the same memory location. EDIT So let's consider the example: patient1 = { :ruby => "red" } patient2 = { :ruby => "programming" } patient1.each_key {|key| puts key.object_id.to_s} 3918094 patient2.each_key {|key| puts key.object_id.to_s} 3918094 patient1 and patient2 are both hashes, that's fine. :ruby however is a symbol. If we were to output the following: patient1.each_key {|key| puts key.to_s} Then what will be output? "red", or "programming"? FURTHER EDIT I'm still really quite confused. I'm thinking a symbol is a pointer to a value. Let's forget hashes for a second. The questions I have are; can you assign a value to a symbol? Is a symbol just a pointer to a variable with a value in it? If symbols are global, does that mean a symbol always points to one thing?

  • Mootools Javascript can't push to array

    - by nona
    I have an array set with the heights of each hidden div, but when I use it, the div instantly jumps down, rather than slowly sliding as when there is a literal number. EDIT: testing seems to reveal that it's a problem with the push method, as content_height.push(item.getElement('.moreInfo').offsetHeight);alert(content_height[i]);gives undefined, but alert(item.getElement('.moreInfo').offsetHeight); gives the correct values Javascript: window.addEvent('domready', function(){ var content_height = [];i=0; $$( '.bio_accordion' ).each(function(item){ i++; content_height.push( item.getElement('.moreInfo').offsetHeight); var thisSlider = new Fx.Slide( item.getElement( '.moreInfo' ), { mode: 'horizontal' } ); thisSlider.hide(); item.getElement('.moreInfo').set('tween').tween('height', '0px'); var morph = new Fx.Morph(item.getElement( '.divToggle' )); var selected = 0; item.getElement( '.divToggle' ).addEvents({ 'mouseenter': function(){ if(!selected) this.morph('.div_highlight'); }, 'mouseleave': function(){ if(!selected) { this.morph('.divToggle'); } }, 'click': function(){ if (!selected){ if (this.getElement('.symbol').innerHTML == '+') this.getElement('.symbol').innerHTML = '-'; else this.getElement('.symbol').innerHTML = '+'; item.getElement('.moreInfo').set('tween', { duration: 1500, transition: Fx.Transitions.Bounce.easeOut }).tween('height', content_height[i]); //replacing this with '650' keeps it smooth selected = 1; thisSlider.slideIn(); } else{ if (this.getElement('.symbol').innerHTML == '+') this.getElement('.symbol').innerHTML = '-'; else this.getElement('.symbol').innerHTML = '+'; thisSlider.slideOut(); item.getElement('.moreInfo').set('tween', { duration: 1000, transition: Fx.Transitions.Bounce.easeOut }).tween('height', '0px'); selected = 0; } } }); } ); }); Why could this be? Thanks so much!

  • Establishing a tcp connection from within a DLL

    - by Nicholas Hollander
I'm trying to write a piece of code that will allow me to establish a TCP connection from within a DLL file. Here's my situation: I have a ruby application that needs to be able to send and receive data over a socket, but I can not access the native ruby socket methods because of the environment in which it will be running. I can however access a DLL file and run the functions within that, so I figured I would create a wrapper for winsock. Unfortunately, attempting to take a piece of code that should connect to a TCP socket in a normal C++ application throws a slew of LNK2019 errors that I can not for the life of me resolve. This is the method I'm using to connect: //Socket variable SOCKET s; //Establishes a connection to the server int server_connect(char* addr, int port) { //Start up Winsock WSADATA wsadata; int error = WSAStartup(0x0202, &wsadata); //Check if something happened if (error) return -1; //Verify Winock version if (wsadata.wVersion != 0x0202) { //Clean up and close WSACleanup(); return -2; } //Get the information needed to finalize a socket SOCKADDR_IN target; target.sin_family = AF_INET; //Address family internet target.sin_port = _WINSOCKAPI_::htons(port); //Port # target.sin_addr.s_addr = inet_addr(addr); //Create the socket s = socket(AF_INET, SOCK_STREAM, IPPROTO_TCP); if (s == INVALID_SOCKET) { return -3; } //Try connecting if (connect(s, (SOCKADDR *)&target, sizeof(target)) == SOCKET_ERROR) { //Failed to connect return -4; } else { //Success return 1; } } The exact errors that I'm receiving are: Error 1 error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol _closesocket@4 referenced in function _server_disconnect [Project Path] Error 2 error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol _connect@12 referenced in function _server_connect [Project Path] Error 3 error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol _htons@4 referenced in function _server_connect [Project Path] Error 4 error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol _inet_addr@4 referenced in function _server_connect [Project Path] Error 5 error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol _socket@12 referenced in function _server_connect [Project Path] Error 6 error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol _WSAStartup@8 referenced in function _server_connect [Project Path] Error 7 error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol _WSACleanup@0 referenced in function _server_connect [Project Path] Error 8 error LNK1120: 7 unresolved externals [Project Path] 1 1 Many thanks!

  • Making Visual C++ DLL from C++ class

    - by prosseek
I have the following C++ code to make dll (Visual Studio 2010). class Shape { public: Shape() { nshapes++; } virtual ~Shape() { nshapes--; }; double x, y; void move(double dx, double dy); virtual double area(void) = 0; virtual double perimeter(void) = 0; static int nshapes; }; class __declspec(dllexport) Circle : public Shape { private: double radius; public: Circle(double r) : radius(r) { }; virtual double area(void); virtual double perimeter(void); }; class __declspec(dllexport) Square : public Shape { private: double width; public: Square(double w) : width(w) { }; virtual double area(void); virtual double perimeter(void); }; I have the __declspec, class __declspec(dllexport) Circle I could build a dll with the following command CL.exe /c example.cxx link.exe /OUT:"example.dll" /DLL example.obj When I tried to use the library, Square* square; square->area() I got the error messages. What's wrong or missing? example_unittest.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol "public: virtual double __thiscall ... Square::area(void)" (?area@Square@@UAENXZ) ADDED Following wengseng's answer, I modified the header file, and for DLL C++ code, I added #define XYZLIBRARY_EXPORT However, I still got errors. example_unittest.obj : error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol "__declspec(dllimport) public: __th iscall Circle::Circle(double)" (__imp_??0Circle@@QAE@N@Z) referenced in function "protected: virtual void __thiscall TestOne::SetUp(void)" (?SetUp@TestOne@@MAEXXZ) example_unittest.obj : error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol "__declspec(dllimport) public: __th iscall Square::Square(double)" (__imp_??0Square@@QAE@N@Z) referenced in function "protected: virtual void __thiscall TestOne::SetUp(void)" (?SetUp@TestOne@@MAEXXZ) example_unittest.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol "public: virtual double __thiscall Square::area(void)" (?area@Square@@UAENXZ) example_unittest.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol "public: virtual double __thiscall Square::perimeter(void)" (?perimeter@Square@@UAENXZ) example_unittest.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol "public: virtual double __thiscall Circle::area(void)" (?area@Circle@@UAENXZ) example_unittest.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol "public: virtual double __thiscall Circle::perimeter(void)" (?perimeter@Circle@@UAENXZ)

  • What is the "Apple" key and what key is it that is depicted as part of an upper case X?

    - by Marnix A. van Ammers
I read in some answers about using the "Apple" + "Space bar" keys. Which is the "Apple" key? Also, I see in my Mac OS X Safari menu bar that to open the download window I can use a 3 key combination. The last of the 3 keys are the Command key (depicted with a clover leaf symbol) and the 'L' key. The first key is the one I don't see anywhere. It is depicted by a symbol that looks to me like an upper case 'X' with most of the forward slash part removed. What key is that? OK, just discovered by trial and error that it must be a symbol for the "option" key. What is that symbol called and why is it not on the keyboard?
