• Moving webshop storage to NoSQL solution

  If you had a webshop solution based on SQL Server relational DB what would be the reasons, if any, to move to NoSQL storage ? Does it even make sense to migrate datastores that rely on relations heavily to NoSQL? If starting from scratch, would you choose NoSQL solution over relational one for a webshop project, which will, after a while, again end up with a bunch of tables like Articles, Classifications, TaxRates, Pricelists etc. and a magnitude of relations between them? What's the support like in .NET (4.0) for MongoDB or MongoDB's support for .NET 4.0? Can I count on rich code generation tools similar to EF wizard, L2SQL wizard etc. for MongoDB? Because as what I have read so far, NoSQL's are mostly suited for document storage, simpler object models. Your answer to this question will help me make the right infrastructure design decisions.

  Hello, I am a newbie to Oracle, and I have used MySQL for most of the time. So now for testing scripts, I was just planning to create a database, but from the resources I have found on google, it doesn't look as simple it is maybe in mysql or in sqlserver. I just need to create a database, say "CREATE DATABASE TESTDB";. That is it, but of the resources I have found, it seems I need to create an instance identifier, decide an authentication method, create an initialization file etc. Do I really have to do all this or am I using the wrong resources. I just need to create a database and add a few tables into it, just to check my connection string etc. I need to check if I am able to connect to my web server.

My query is: SELECT t2.NAME, t1.serie FROM ( SELECT * FROM `all` WHERE `serie` LIKE '$serie' ) t1 INNER JOIN sootv t2 ON t1.art = t2.art; it works, but sootv table contains data like name|art|foo abc | 1 | 5 abc | 1 | 6 i get 2 same results. • Maintaining stored procedures in source control

  How do you guys maintain your stored procedures? I'd like to keep versions of them for a few different reasons. I also will be setting up cruisecontrol.net and nant this weekend to automate builds. I was thinking about coding something that would generate the create scripts for all tables/sprocs/udf/xml schemas in my development database. Then it would take those scripts and update them in source control every couple hours.... Ideally, I'd like to make this some sort of plugin/module for cruisecontrol.net. Any other ideas?

  Ho do I prevent a duplicate row from being created in a table with two columns, neither of which are unique? And can this be done using MySQL only, or does it require checks with my PHP script?   I need a comparison table of some sort for database varieties (MySQL, SQLite etc.). I can't find one. My use case is, I am implementing storage of objects in a distributed hash table. I need a database solution that is: Fast for sorting Simplistic (no users, preferably no additional structures like multiple tables etc.) Concurrent (if possible) Multi-platform File based (not stored in memory primarily) Centralized I will be programming in Go. As I understand, I believe I need what is called a Document Orientated Database, because I am storing objects, identified by keys. EDIT: While I am implementing a DHT, I will also be storing metadata about the objects, such as access counts etc. It would also be preferable to have TLL (time to live)

• Changing newid() to newsequentialid() on an existing table

  Hi, At the moment we have a number of tables that are using newid() on the primary key. This is causing large amounts of fragmentation. So I would like to change the column to use newsequentialid() instead. I imagine that the existing data will remain quite fragmented but the new data will be less fragmented. This would imply that I should perhaps wait some time before changing the PK index from non-clustered to clustered. My question is, does anyone have experience doing this? Is there anything I have overlooked that I should be careful of?

• SQL Server 2008 EF 4 - limiting database records returned using permissions?

  In our database all tables are linked back to a single table. This table has a bit column to limit whether the record is displayed. Currently the records are filtered on the code side of the website. Is there any way to set up permission so that userA would never see any record in the database where that common bit column was set to true? We are using SQL Server 2008. Alternatively we are also using entity framework 4.0 in .net 4 (in c#) if you have any ideas how it might be accomplished there? Thanks for your feedback.

  I need to model Owners and Rentees in an application, so you have stuff that is always owned by someone and can be rented for someone else. I first approached this problem with Single Table Inheritance because both types of person will share all attributes, so you would have a model called Person associated to a table people with Owner and Rentee inheriting from Person. The problem is that Single type inheritance discerns subtypes using a field type and therefore a record in the table can represent either an Owner or a Rentee but not both at the same time, while in the real context you can have an Owner which is renting something from another Owner and therefore that person is at the same time an Owner and a Rentee. How would you approach this problem? Would you use separated tables fro owners and rentees? Is there any other type of table inheritance in Rails?

• Display two images side by side on an HTML Page

  I am trying to place two images of the same size side-by-side. If I use a "table" then I am able to display both images side-by-side. But in my CSS Stylesheet I am using a custom format for the table and this shows on the page containing the images too. But I want to just display both images without any custom background or border etc. I tried using "div", "span", "ul" & "li" etc. but failed in each case. How can I place two images (of same size) in a single line, without using a "table"? If I have to use "table" for the same, then how can I use two (or more) different formatting for my tables using CSS? Thank you. Lalit Kumar Barik

• MySQL performance over a (local) network much slower than I would expect

  MySQL queries in my production environment are taking much longer than I would expect them too. The site in question is a fairly large Drupal site, with many modules installed. The webserver (Nginx) and database server (mysql) are hosted on separated machines, connected by a 100mbps LAN connection (hosted by Rackspace). I have the exact same site running on my laptop for development. Obviously, on my laptop, the webserver and database server are on the same box. Here are the results of my database query times: Production: Executed 291 queries in 320.33 milliseconds. (homepage) Executed 517 queries in 999.81 milliseconds. (content page) Development: Executed 316 queries in 46.28 milliseconds. (homepage) Executed 586 queries in 79.09 milliseconds. (content page) As can clearly be seen from these results, the time involved with querying the MySQL database is much shorter on my laptop, where the MySQL server is running on the same database as the web server. Why is this?! One factor must be the network latency. On average, a round trip from from the webserver to the database server takes 0.16ms (shown by ping). That must be added to every singe MySQL query. So, taking the content page example above, where there are 517 queries executed. Network latency alone will add 82ms to the total query time. However, that doesn't account for the difference I am seeing (79ms on my laptop vs 999ms on the production boxes). What other factors should I be looking at? I had thought about upgrading the NIC to a gigabit connection, but clearly there is something else involved. I have run the MySQL performance tuning script from http://www.day32.com/MySQL/ and it tells me that my database server is configured well (better than my laptop apparently). The only problem reported is "Of 4394 temp tables, 48% were created on disk". This is true in both environments and in the production environment I have even tried increasing max_heap_table_size and Current tmp_table_size to 1GB, with no change (I think this is because I have some BLOB and TEXT columns).

• Parasing HTML to find specific links (Without Keywords)

  I posted about this sort of earlier, but I am not sure how to post back to my original question as I can only comment or answer my own question. Anyways, I need to get 4 links from a website, the latest stable build links for windows and linux, and the latest development build links for windows and linux (4 links total) within my C++ application. I can download the page (http://www.sourcemod.net/snapshots.php) with LibCURL which is already implemented in the project, but after that I am not sure. I was looking at parsers, but I can't think of how I am going to discern link from link. Obviously using a parser I could get the first link from each table, but this does not seem efficient and would only provide me with the links to windows builds. It looks like the links I need will be in the fourth in both tables, but I am just very familiar with a good way to go about this, so any help would be appreciated.

  I scripted the tables in my dev database using SQL 2008 - generate scripts option (Datbase-right click-Tasks-Generate Scripts) and ran it on the staging database, but the script throws the below error for each table Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Line 1 Incorrect syntax near '('. Msg 319, Level 15, State 1, Line 15 Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'with'. If this statement is a common table expression, an xmlnamespaces clause or a change tracking context clause, the previous statement must be terminated with a semicolon.   Lets say we have 3 tables (actually I have 2 at the moment, but this example might illustrate the thought better): [Person] ID: int, primary key Name: nvarchar(xx) [Group] ID: int, primary key Name: nvarchar(xx) [Role] ID: int, primary key Name: nvarchar(xx) [PersonGroupRole] Person_ID: int, PRIMARY COMPOSITE OR NOT? Group_ID: int, PRIMARY COMPOSITE OR NOT? Role_ID: int, PRIMARY COMPOSITE OR NOT? Should any of the 3 ID's in the relation PersonGroupRole be marked as PRIMARY key or should they all 3 be combined into one composite?? whats the real benefit of doing it or not? I can join anyways as far as I know, so Person JOIN PersonGroupRole JOIN Group gives me which persons are in which Groups etc. I will be using LINQ/C#/.NET on top of SQL-express and SQL-server, so if there is any reasons regarding language/SQL that might make the choice more clear, thats the platform I ask about. Looking forward to see what answers pops up, as I have thought of these primary keys/indexes many times when making combined ones.

  Hi, I wrote a long table with a label in a tex file and \input it into my main tex file. The reference in the main tex file to the table, however, does not show the numbering of the table but the one of the next table that are written directly in the main tex file. All long tables that are written directly in the main tex file have correct references. How to fix my problem? Must the label be defined in the same tex file as its reference? Thanks and regards! The label is \label{tab:yy}, and the reference is \ref{tab:yy}, and every table has a distinct label.

  Hi! I'm trying to join some tables together in MySQL, but I seem to get an error saying: #1066 - Not unique table/alias: 'calendar_jobs' I really want it to select everything from the cal_events, the 2 user bits and just the destination col from the jobs table, but become "null" if there arn't any job. A right join seemed to fit the bill but doesn't work! Can anyone help!? UPDATE: Thanks for the help on the previous query, I'm now up to this: SELECT calendar_events.* , calendar_users.doctorOrNurse, calendar_users.passportName, calendar_jobs.destination FROM `calendar_events` , `calendar_users` RIGHT JOIN calendar_jobs ON calendar_events.jobID = calendar_jobs.jobID WHERE `start` >= 0 AND calendar_users.userID = calendar_events.userID; But am now getting an error saying: #1054 - Unknown column 'calendar_events.jobID' in 'on clause' What is it this time!? • Adding new column in Sales Order View Items in Magento Admin

  In the admin interface of Magento I need to modify the tables in the Sales / Order / View order so that it shows, besides the products name, their manufacturer as well. I'm trying to look for the file to modify to make that happen. I thought I would find a section with all the columns that are displayed in app/code/core/Mage/Sales/Block/Order/Item/Renderer/Default.php but by inspecting it there seem to be no reference to the columns/product attributes. I also tried to modify app/design/adminhtml/default/default/template/sales/order/view/items/renderer/default.phtml by changing <?php echo $this->getColumnHtml($_item, 'name') ?> into <?php echo $this->getColumnHtml($_item, 'manufacturer') ?> but it changed nothing, so I suppose that file is not involved... Can anybody please point me to the right file to modify? Thank you!

  This is a wordpress installation, but I think the question is more of a general sql question. First off, my sql skills are not great (I don't even know if I'm following the correct format for illustrating the db). • Psycopg2 doesn't like table names that start with a lower case letter

  I am running ActiveState's ActivePython 2.6.5.12 and PostgreSQL 9.0 Beta 1 under Windows XP. If I create a table with an upper case first letter (i.e. Books), psycopg2 returns the "Programming Error: relation "books" does not exist" error message when I run the select statement: execute("SELECT * FROM Books"). The same error is returned if I run: execute("SELECT * FROM books"). However, if I change the table to a lower case first name (i.e. books), then either of the above statements works. Are tables name supposed to have a lower case first name? Is this a setting or a feature or a bug? Am I missing something obvious?

  Ok, using SQL Server 2008. On my web page I have a textbox with jQuery-UI AutoComplete hooked up. Now I need a stored procedure to search across all columns of a single table(or multiple joined tables I suppose) for a search string coming from the textbox/autocomplete AJAX call, and return "suggested" search strings. I am using the AdventureWorks db for testing(Products table) So for example, the product table has columns for product name and product number(among others) and I want to return suggested search strings based on user input where they may enter a product name and/or a product number. I have it working across a single column which was simple. Any ideas?

• PHP - MySQL - Select runs indefinitely

  I have three tables listings: id, pid, beds, baths, etc, etc, etc, db locations: id, pid, zip, lat, lon, etc, etc, etc, db images id, pid, height, width, raw, etc, etc, db id, pid & db are indexed. db just references the mls provider a particular item came from. in images the raw column holds raw image data there are about 15k rows in listings/locations, and about 120k rows in images so there are multiple rows that have the same pid. when i do "select pid from listings" or "select pid from locations" the query completes successfully in about 100ms. when i do "select pid from images" it just hangs in sqlyog and never completes... i was thinking since the raw column contains alot of information that it might be trying to select that too, but my query doesn't try to select that so I can't imagine why it's taking so long... any idea why this is happening??

So first i want to select in binder the binder i need to get the tablesname where data is stored. So i need to select table by a fieldname in this case the fieldname is tableid1 and would have the content 21 so that i have to look in 21. AND it should be property 1 from table 456 and table 21 the same... i am using php and already tried with union and subquerys but it seems that i am to silly to prepare such query!
