  One of the co-founders answered questions about the company when the job was posted, but I feel like I shouldn't assume that he's the one who is in charge of hiring. Since it's relatively new and has a lot of name overlap with other things already on the web, it's hard to find any information about the company online, much less the name of their hiring manager. I'm not even certain that they do have a hiring manager, since I seem to remember that they are just an 8 person team. I've heard that "To whom it may concern" is tacky, and normally I would say something along the lines of "Dear Head of Human Resources", but that clearly doesn't work in this case. Any idea what my salutation should be? • Effect of using dedicated NVidia card instead of Intel HD4000

  Short version: Can someone please advise me of the effect of adding a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M card to an Ubuntu laptop in terms of power consumption and performance gains/losses when doing general productivity tasks and booting up. Also, how good are the closed source, open source, and Bumblebee drivers for these newer cards compared to support for the Intel HD4000? Long version/Background, if any info here is helpful: I'm thinking of ordering a laptop from PC Specialist (a UK company who actually sell machines without Windows pre-installed) with the following specifications: Genesis IV: 15.6" AUO Matte 95% Gamut LED Widescreen (1920x1080) Intel® Core™i5 Dual Core Mobile Processor i5-3210M (2.50GHz) 3MB 4GB SAMSUNG 1600MHz SODIMM DDR3 MEMORY (1 x 4GB) 120GB INTEL® 520 SERIES SSD, SATA 6 Gb/s (upto 550MB/sR | 520MB/sW) Intel 2 Channel High Definition Audio + MIC/Headphone Jack GIGABIT LAN & WIRELESS INTEL® N135 802.11N (150Mbps) + BLUETOOTH Now, as I want this laptop mainly for work and not for games, I would be more than content with the HD4000 integrated chip which comes with the processor. However, for compatibility reasons, I am not able to get the specs I want unless I choose a NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M 1GB graphics card, which I don't have a great deal of use for. I'm willing to buy it, however, as it's still cheaper than any other laptop with the specs I want. However, I know that Linux power management isn't fantastic with open-source graphics drivers, and I don't much about Bumblebee. Basically, whilst I'm happy to 'tolerate' the card being there, I don't want to experience any negative effects on the rest of my system (battery, performance etc) and if there are likely to be any, I might reconsider my purchase. So if anyone can advise me on the effects, I would be very grateful, since I doubt I can just turn the card off. Thankyou for any assistance :)

• Implementing `fling` logic without pan gesture recognizers

  So I am trying to port over a simple game that I originally wrote to iphone into cocos2d-x. I've hit a minor bump however in implementing simple 'fling' logic I had in the iphone version that is difficult to port over to the c++. In iOS I could get the velocity of a pan gesture very easily: CGPoint velocity = [recognizer velocityInView:recognizer.view]; However now I basically only know where the touch began, where the touch ended, and all the touches that are logged in between. For now I logged all the pts onto a stack then pulled the last point and the 6th to last point (seemed to work the best), find the difference between those pts multiply by a constant and use that as the velocity. It works relatively well, but I'm wondering if anyone else has any better algorithms, when given a bunch of touch pts, to figure out a new speed upon releasing an object that feels natural (Note speed in my game is just a constant x and y, there's no drag or spin or anything tricky like that). Bonus points if anyone has figured out how to get pan gestures into the newest version (3.0 alpha) of cocos2d-x without losing ability to build cross platform.

• How to get Wifi Working Properly - I am Noob

  I'm a noob to Ubuntu, but not computers. I installed a full version of Ubuntu version 12 whatever it is. I run it on a machine that has Win7/Win8 on another hard drive. My wireless adapter is some tiny USB stick I got on eBay - it works great in Windows, but I can't get it to work in Ubuntu. More precisely, Ubuntu is providing me a list (sometimes) of wireless networks in the area and when I try to connect to mine it just keeps password prompting me even though the one I use is correct. I looked over all the settings multiple times and don't believe there is anything in error regarding what it takes to connect to my network. So, I thought maybe it is a driver issue and came across NDIS. I thought I should try installing it, but I don't know how when I can't connect the Ubuntu machine to the Internet. I tried some commands to no avail. I have the Ubuntu installation disc and it shows a NDIS common and utils .deb files in there. Can someone out there help me out to get this wireless setup so I can get online?

• How can I remove duplicate icons for "launched" java programs in the launcher?

  When launching java programs (like IntelliJ IDEA and Crashplan) in Natty's Unity launcher, duplicate icons are shown (see image). For IntelliJ I created the .desktop file, for Crashplan the .desktop file is supplied with the application. Is there something that can be changed in the .desktop files (or somewhere else) that can prevent this from occurring? I couldn't find a bug report for unity itself but programs like Gnome-Do/Docky have bug reports and had to make internal changes to their applications to prevent this. In this image the 1st icon is the one created from the .desktop file and the second icon is after launching it. Second icon disappears when closing the application. • Facebook Like javascript related to Time Spent Downloading a page Increase in GWT?

  Hi, I installed the Facebook Like button Javascript version on my website on December 15th. Take a look at this report from Google Webmaster Central. Crawl stats Googlebot activity in the last 90 days The crawl stats are from Googlebot which as far as I know doesn't execute Javascript. Could the Facebook Like Javascript code, "The XFBML version" be related to large spike in Time spent downloading a page? (By the way the huge spike in November was caused by a mistake where every image request was getting a 301.) I'm not sure what caused the spike to go down by half somewhere in December. It may have been related to a faulty setting in web.config. I'm at a loss as to what I can do about this or even how to tell if this is my problem or Googlebots crawl problem. Here is the Facebook code I am using to create the like button.   Our budget situation is a little different this year than in years past.  We were late getting an initial budget approved.  There are a number of different reasons this occurred.  We had different competing priorities and the budget got pushed down the list.  And that’s completely my fault for not making the budget a higher priority and getting it completed on time. That left us with initial budget approval in early August rather than prior to June 30th.  Even after that there were a number of small adjustments that needed to be made.  And one large glaring mistake that needed to be fixed.  We had a typo in the budget that made it through twelve versions of review.  In my defense I can only say that the cell was red so of course it had to be negative!  And that’s one more mistake I can add to my long and growing list of Mistakes I’ll Never Make Again. Last week we passed a revised budget (version 17) with this corrected.  This is the version we’re cleaning up and posting to the web site this week or next.

• Update kernel patch for VMware Player 4.0.3

  As I stated some days ago, after upgrading to Ubuntu Precise Pangolin, aka 12.04 LTS, I had a minor obstacle with VMware products. Today, VMware offered to upgrade to Player 4.0.3 due to security-related reasons. Initially, I thought that this update might have the patch for kernel 3.2.0 integrated but sadly that is not the case. 'Hacking' the kernel patch My first intuitive try to run the existing patch against the sources of VMware Player 4.0.3 failed, as the patch by Stefano Angeleri (weltall) is originally written explicitely against Workstation 8.0.2 and Player 4.0.2. But this is nothing to worry about seriously. Just fire up your favourite editor of choice and modify the version signature for VMware Player, like so: nano patch-modules_3.2.0.sh And update line 8 for the new version: plreqver=4.0.3 Save the shell script and run it as super-user (root): sudo ./patch-modules_3.2.0.sh In case that you previously patched your VMware sources you have to remove some artifacts beforehand. Otherwise, the patch script will inform you like so: /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source/.patched found. You have already patched your sources. Exiting In that case, simply remove the 'hidden' file and run the shell script again: sudo rm /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source/.patchedsudo ./patch-modules_3.2.0.sh To finalise your installation either restart the vmware service or reboot your machine. On first start VMware will present you their EULA which you have to accept, and everything gets back to normal operation mode. Currently, I would assume that in case of VMware Workstation 8.0.3 you can follow the same steps as just described.

• Are the only types of data "sources" static and dynamic?

  Thinking that there might be others, but not sure -- but before getting into that, let me explain what I mean by static and dynamic data sources. Static (or datastore) - Meaning that the data's state is non-changing, and if was changed, that would be a new state, and the old data would be considered stateless; meaning it no longer is known to exist, or not exist. Another way of possibly looking at a static data source might be that if read and written back without modification, the checksum for before and after should be exactly the same regardless of the duration of time between the reading and rewriting of the data. Examples: Photos, Files, Database Record, Dynamic (or datastream) - Meaning that the data's state is known to be in flux, and never expected to be the same per input. Example: Live video/audio feed, Stock Market feed, First let me say, the above is a very loose mapping of the concepts, and I'd welcome any feedback. Next, onto the core of the question, that being are these the only two types of data sources. My guess, is that yes, they are -- but that there are hybrid versions of the two. That being, streaming data that has a fixed state. For example, the data being streamed has a checksum given and each unique checksum is known to be a single instance of static data. On the flip side, static data could be chained via say a version control system; when played back, each version might be viewed as a segment of a stream; thing is, the very fact that it can be played back makes the data source static. Another type might be that the data source is being organically discovered, and it's simply unknown what the state is. Questions, feedback, requests -- just comment, thanks!!

  I downloaded Komparator source from this page. The INSTALL file in the source say the following: Unpack komparator4-xxx.tar.bz2, and open a shell inside this directory mkdir build cd build cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=`kde4-config --prefix` .. make sudo make install I unpacked the file, make the directory, entered this, but when I have tried to cmake (sentece Nº3) the terminal print the following errors disabling me to make & install: CMake Error at /usr/share/cmake-2.8/Modules/FindKDE4.cmake:98 (MESSAGE): ERROR: cmake/modules/FindKDE4Internal.cmake not found in /home/lucio/.kde/share/apps;/usr/share/kde4/apps Call Stack (most recent call first): CMakeLists.txt:2 (find_package) CMake Warning (dev) in CMakeLists.txt: No cmake_minimum_required command is present. • How do you keep SOA DRY?

  In our organization, we've shifted to a more "service oriented architecture". To give an example, let's assume we need to retrieve a "Quote" object. This quote has a shipper, a consignee, phone numbers, contacts, email addresses, and other location information. In other words, a Quote object is made up of many other objects. So, it seems like it would make sense to make a "Quote Retrieval Service". In our situation, we've accomplished this by creating a .NET solution and writing the service. The service API looks something like this (in pseudo-code): Function GetQuote(String ID) Returns Quote So, so far so good. Now, when this service is consumed, to keep things "de-coupled", we are creating essentially a duplicate of the Quote object and mapping from the QuoteService version of the Quote into the consumer's version of the Quote. In many cases, these classes will have the exact same properties. So, if the Quote service is consumed by 5 other applications, we would have 6 definitions of what a "Quote" is. One for each consumer, and one for the service. This feels wrong. I thought code was supposed to be DRY, but it seems like our method of SOA is forcing us to create tons of duplicated class definitions. What are we doing wrong, or is the code duplication just a "necessary evil" of SOA?

• How to debug lack of sound in Asus EEE PC

  I have an Asus EEE PC 1225B with fresh Lubuntu 12.04. And no sound. It doesn't seem to be some common problem, so I have to make some research what's up. I tried running alsamixer, so I know I have Realtek ALC269VB with nothing muted unexpectedly. What can I do next to identify and solve the problem? • D3DXMatrixDecompose gives different quaternion than D3DXQuaternionRotationMatrix

  In trying to solve this problem, I tracked down the problem to the conversion of the rotation matrix to quaternion. In particular, consider the following matrix: -0.02099178 0.9997436 -0.008475631 0 0.995325 0.02009799 -0.09446743 0 0.09427284 0.01041905 0.9954919 0 0 0 0 1 SlimDX.Quaternion.RotationMatrix (which calls D3DXQuaternionRotationMatrix gives a different answer than SlimDX.Matrix.Decompose (which uses D3DXMatrixDecompose). The answers they give (after being normalized) are: X Y Z W Quaternion.RotationMatrix -0.05244324 0.05137424 0.002209336 0.9972991 Matrix.Decompose 0.6989997 0.7135442 -0.03674842 -0.03006023 Which are totally different (note the signs of X, Z, and W are different). Note that these aren't q/-q (two quaternions that represent the same rotation); they face completely different directions. I've noticed that with matrices for rotations very close to that one (successive frames in the animation) that the Matrix.Decompose version gives a solution that flips around wildly and occasionally goes into the desired position, while the Quaternion.RotationMatrix version gives solutions that are stable but go in the wrong direction. This is only for the right arm in my animation -- for the left arm, both functions give the correct solution, which is the same quaternion within error tolerances. This makes me think that there's some sort of numeric instability or weird stuff with signs going on. I tried implementing this and then this, but both gave me a completely incorrect solution (even for the matricies where the SlimDX ones were working correctly) -- maybe the rows and columns are flipped?

  My SD card won't mount when I put it into my lap top, everything was fine before the upgrade. The information about the SD card appears just fine when I type "sudo fdisk l " it just says that it doesn't have a valid partition table. • Oh snap! My RPi was upgraded to 512MB! Woo-hoo!

  I ordered a Raspberry Pi Model B (256MB) over 4 months ago on backorder. When it finally came I saw it was upgraded to the new half a gig model! Woot! But, all was not perfect. Gary C. told me the shipped configuration of the new RPi models didn't have the right firmware for 512MB, and I had to upgrade the start.elf in the /boot directory to recognize all of the 512MB RAM. I did a "free" command, and sure enough saw only 240MB. Sadness. But, Gary gave me a copy of his start.elf which worked after some trail and error. • Partitioning Strategies for P6 Reporting Database

  Prior to P6 Reporting Database version 3.2 sp1 range partitioning was used. This was applied only to the history tables. The ranges were defined during installation and additional ranges would need to be added once your date range entered the final defined range. As of P6 Reporting Database version 3.2 sp1, interval partitioning was implemented. Interval partitioning was applied to the existing History table as well as Slowly Changing Dimension tables. One of the major advantages of interval partitioning is there is no more manual addition of ranges. The interval partitioning will automatically create partitions for the defined interval when data is inserted into the table and it exceeds the existing partitions. In 3.2 sp1 there are steps on how to update your partitioning. For all versions after 3.2 sp1 interval partitioning is the only partitioning option used. When upgrading it is important to be aware of these changes. • ksoftirqd uses 100% cpu

  I am running 32bit Ubuntu 10.04. A lot of the times ksoftirqd/0 or ksoftirqd/1 start using up 100% CPU for no apparent reason, and I am forced to reboot my laptop. Incidentally this also happens when I maximize my (youtube) videos on Chrome and Fireox, but once I un-maximize the videos the CPU usage goes down to the original levels. Any ideas what it going on? --- Addendum --- dmesg produces a ~2000 line output. • suggestions for lonewolf dev setup

  I'm looking for some suggestions for a better development setup. Background: I'm a crusty old software engineer (mostly java of late) and I have around 50 - 100 incomplete java projects scattered everywhere, usb keys, HDDs, and spanning across 5 or 6 computers etc, which have been put on hold for a few years (ie: family). I have no version control at home. I've been using IntelliJ for around 10 years, so that's the only constant. I'm thinking of nominating one machine as a headless server to put all my projects on, maybe a ubuntu box, that way It won't matter which device I'm on, all my projects can be accessed (and I don't have to waste time actually looking for them). I don't need to access code over the net. These are my own 'happy place' projects so I only work on them when I'm at home, however I can see the benefit of the tasking app being online, that way if I think of something while on public transport lets say, I can add it then & there, but it's not a requirement. I can wait until I get home to create tasks. Summary: So I need some sort of version control so I can rollback mistakes, and some sort of simple tasking software where I can assign tasks for myself later on when I get time. I use Subversion, Sonar, Jira and Crucible at work but I think it's a little bit of an overkill for me though. What do you suggest?
