• Converting stream of jpg files to FLV stream

  I work with a Panasonic hcm280a camera that can be controlled by my software, It generates a stream of jpeg files that are huge and I want to convert this stream to a FLV stream preferably with a good compressional ration Does FFMpeg do that? I am basically looking for an off the shelve open source software (or commercial software) that can generate that streaming media for me. Again my input is a stream of jpg files that come from the camera server. Any insight or comment would be greatly appreciated Thanks

• E-commerce platform for custom application integration

  We are building an online subscription-based website and I'm looking for recommendations on which e-commerce platform to use for the checkout process. Requirements include: Only four products. The sign-up process of the site is heavily customized, and after checkout the user should automatically get logged into the subscriber area. Subscriptions will last one year and can be renewed manually. Support for coupons/discount codes at a later point. Since the entire application is custom, we've weighed building a custom checkout but are strongly leaning towards using existing software to avoid having to build lots of admin reporting as well as a coupon engine down the road. The two questions we're pondering are: Is it better to a) build our application custom and use whatever e-commerce software we select just for the payment piece, or b) use the e-commerce software as the basis and build our application around it/as a module/etc? Which e-commerce platform should we use? I've looked into a variety of off the shelf e-commerce software, but it's not clear to me which would be easiest to integrate with. • Copy task in Visual Studio 2008

  This is a question related to a previous question I posted (see here). I need to configure a .csproj file to copy some files from a directory to another one (let me call them SOURCE and DESTINATION). I also need to change the SOURCE path depending from the configuration I'm using. For example, if I compile my project in Debug mode, the SOURCE path must contain a subfolder called Debug. I tried the solution proposed by Schmitt in the previous post, using $(ConfigurationName) to set the dynamic directory into the SOURCE path. When I opened the solution containing that project, a list of links to the source files appeared in the main tree of the project and they were correctly related to the Debug mode. But when I changed to the Release mode, I saw that the path of the linked source files were set again to the Debug version. Is there a way to specify a parameter in the Include attribute of the SourceFiles element? Thank you.

• Google App Engine - Secure Cookies

  I'd been searching for a way to do cookie based authentication/sessions in Google App Engine because I don't like the idea of memcache based sessions, and I also don't like the idea of forcing users to create google accounts just to use a website. I stumbled across someone's posting that mentioned some signed cookie functions from the Tornado framework and it looks like what I need. What I have in mind is storing a user's id in a tamper proof cookie, and maybe using a decorator for the request handlers to test the authentication status of the user, and as a side benefit the user id will be available to the request handler for datastore work and such. The concept would be similar to forms authentication in ASP.NET. This code comes from the web.py module of the Tornado framework. According to the docstrings, it "Signs and timestamps a cookie so it cannot be forged" and "Returns the given signed cookie if it validates, or None." I've tried to use it in an App Engine Project, but I don't understand the nuances of trying to get these methods to work in the context of the request handler. Can someone show me the right way to do this without losing the functionality that the FriendFeed developers put into it? • windbg and symbols

  When I set a breakpoint on one of the methods that appears on top of the stack (!CLRStack), I get lots of these messages for every DLL that the debuggee is referencing including the .NET Framework ones. ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded Further digging into this shows that windbg is not loading every .pdb file that I make available in the symbols path. I've double-checked my symbol's path and it looks OK, but the following commands clearly show that not all PDBs are loaded correctly! 0:000 !sym noisy noisy mode - symbol prompts on 0:000 .reload Reloading current modules ................................................................ • .htpasswd under IIS - does it work?

  I'm trying to password protect a directory on a server that's running IIS. I've put the following in the .htaccess file in that directory - AuthName "Restricted Area" AuthType Basic AuthUserFile /path/.htpasswd AuthGroupFile /dev/null require valid-user I've tried a whole bunch of different paths and although it's asking for a username and password it won't take it. I've tried using the path provided by _SERVER["PATH_TRANSLATED"] but that's no help either. Is this a problem with my path, or does IIS just not support .htpasswd?

• Flex ANT tasks can't find my assets

  I'm attempting to compile my Flex project with an ANT build script. One of my MXML components references an external XML data file, like this: <mx:XML id="treeData" source="assets/data/help.xml" /> When I build the project using Flex Builder, it compiles fine. However, when I try to compile it using ANT, I get the following error: Error: Problem finding external XML: assets/data/help.xml How come ANT isn't finding the XML file? Apparently it knows the source path otherwise it would not have found the component to begin with. I added the source path to the target anyway, but it doesn't seem to have made any difference: <source-path path-element="${SRC}" /> Any ideas?

  I am just learning Clojure and am having trouble moving my code into different files. I keep detting this error from the appnrunner.clj - Exception in thread "main" java.lang.Exception: Unable to resolve symbol: -run-application in this context It seems to be finding the namespaces fine, but then not seeing the Vars as being bound... Any idea how to fix this? • Why does x86 WiX installer on Vista x64 not write keys to WOW6432Node in the registry

  I have an installer that writes to HKLM\Software\DroidExplorer\InstallPath. On any x86 machine it writes just fine to the expected location, on Windows XP x64 and Windows 7 x64 it also writes to the expected location, which is actually HKLM\Software\WOW6432Node\DroidExplorer\InstallPath. Later on during the install, my bootstrapper, which is also x86, attempts to read the value. On all x86 Windows machines it is successful, and on Windows XP x64 and Windows 7 x64, but Windows Vista x64 is unable to locate the key. If I look in the registry, it doesn't actually write it to WOW6432Node on Vista, it writes it to Software\DroidExplorer\InstallPath If I do not forcefully tell the installer to write to WOW6432Node, it writes the value to Software\DroidExplorer\InstallPath, but the bootstrapper still trys to look in WOW6432Node because of the Registry Reflection. This is on all x64 systems. Why is Vista x64 the only one I have this issue with? Is there a way around this?

• Guaranteed way to find the ildasm.exe and ilasm.exe files regardless of .NET version/environment?

  Is there a way to programmatically get the FileInfo/Path of the ildasm.exe/ilasm.exe executables? I'm attempting to decompile and recompile a dll/exe file appropriately after making some alterations to it (I'm guessing PostSharp does something similar to alter the IL after the compilation). I found a blog post that pointed to: var pfDir = Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolders.ProgramFiles)); var sdkDir = Path.Combine(pfDir, @"Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\bin"); ... However, when I ran this code the directory did not exist (mainly because my SDK version is 7.1), so on my local machine the correct path is @"Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.1\bin". How do I ensure I can actually find the ildasm.exe? Similarly, I found another blog post on how to get access to ilasm.exe as: string windows = Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.System); string fwork = Path.Combine(windows, @"..\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727"); ... While this works, I noticed that I have Framework and Framework64, and within Framework itself I have all of the versions up to v4.0.30319 (same with Framework64). So, how do I know which one to use? Should it be based on the .NET Framework version I'm targetting? Summary: How do I appropriately guarantee to find the correct path to ildasm.exe? How do I appropriately select the correct ilasm.exe to compile?

• Clean Code Developer & Certification in IT - MSCC 21.09.2013

  It was a very busy weekend this time, and quite some hectic to organise the second meetup on a Saturday for the Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community (MSCC) but it was absolutely fun. Following, I'm writing a brief summary about the topics we spoke about and the new impulses I got. "What a meetup... I was positively impressed. At the beginning I thought that noone would actually show up but then by the time the room got filled. Lots of conversation, great dialogues and fantastic networking between fresh students, experienced students, experienced employees, and self-employed attendees. That's what community is all about!" Above quote was my first reaction shortly after the gathering. And despite being busy during the weekend and yesterday, I took my time to reflect a little bit on things happened and statements made before writing it here on my blog. Additionally, I was also very curious about possible reactions and blogs from other attendees. Reactions from other craftsmen Let me quickly give you some links and quotes from others first... Starting the day with a surprise Indeed, I was very pleased to stumble over the existence of Mobile Monday Mauritius on LinkedIn, an association about any kind of mobile app development, mobile gadgets and latest smartphones on the market. Despite the Monday in their name they had scheduled their recent meeting on Saturday between 10:00 and 12:00hrs. Wow, what a coincidence! Let's grap the bull by its horns and pay them an introductory visit. As they chose the Ebene Accelerator at the Orange Tower in Ebene it was a no-brainer to leave home a bit earlier and stop by. It was quite an experience and fun to talk to the geeks over there. Really looking forward to organise something together.... Arriving at the venue As the children got a bit uneasy at the MoMo gathering and I didn't want to disturb them too much, we arrived early at Bagatelle. Well, no problems as we went for a decent breakfast at Food Lover's Market. Shortly afterwards we went to our venue location, Talking Drums, and prepared the room for the meeting. We only had to take off a repro-painting of the wall in order to have a decent area for the projector. All went very smooth and my two little ones were of great help. Just in time, our first craftsman Avinash arrived on the spot. And then the waiting started... Luckily, not too long. Bit by bit more and more IT people came to join our meeting. Meanwhile, I used the time to give a brief introduction about the MSCC in general, what we are (hm, maybe I am) trying to achieve and that the recent phase is completely focused on creating more awareness that a community like the MSCC is active here in Mauritius. As soon as we reached some 'critical mass' of about ten people I asked everyone for a short introduction and bio, just in case... Conversation between participants started to kick in and we were actually more networking than having a focus on our topics of the day. Quick updates on latest news and development around the MSCC Finally, Clean Code Developer No matter how the position is actually called, whether it is Software Engineer, Software Developer, Programmer, Architect, or Craftsman, anyone working in IT is facing almost the same obstacles. As for the process of writing software applications there are re-occurring patterns and principles combined with some common exercise and best practices on how to resolve them. Initiated by the must-read book 'Clean Code' by Robert C. Martin (aka Uncle Bob) the concept of the Clean Code Developer (CCD) was born already some years ago. CCD is much likely to traditional martial arts where you create awareness of certain principles and learn how to apply practices to improve your style. The CCD initiative recommends to indicate your level of knowledge and experience with coloured wrist bands - equivalent to the belt colours - for various reasons. Frankly speaking, I think that the biggest advantage here is provided by the obvious recognition of conceptual understanding. For example, take the situation of a team meeting... A member with a higher grade in CCD, say Green grade, sees that there are mainly Red grades to talk to, and adjusts her way of communication to their level of understanding. The choice of words might change as certain elements of CCD are not yet familiar to all team members. So instead of talking in an abstract way which only Green grades could follow the whole scenario comes down to Red grade level. Different story, better results... Similar to learning martial arts, we only covered two grades during this occasion - black and red. Most interestingly, there was quite some positive feedback and lots of questions about the principles and practices of the red grade. And we gathered real-world examples from various craftsman and discussed them. Following the Clean Code Developer Red Grade and some annotations from our meetup: CCD Red Grade - Principles Don't Repeat Yourself - DRY Keep It Simple, Stupid (and Short) - KISS Beware of Optimisations! Favour Composition over Inheritance - FCoI Interestingly most of the attendees already heard about those key words but couldn't really classify or categorize them. It's very similar to a situation in which you do not the particular for a thing and have to describe it to others... until someone tells you the actual name and suddenly all is very simple. CCD Red Grade - Practices Follow the Boy Scouts Rule Root Cause Analysis - RCA Use a Version Control System Apply Simple Refactoring Pattern Reflect Daily Introduction to the principles and practices of Clean Code Developer - here: Red Grade As for the various ToDo's we commonly agreed that the Boy Scout Rule clearly is not limited to software development or IT administration but applies to daily life in general. Same for the root cause analysis, btw. We really had good stories with surprisingly endings and conclusions. A quick check about who is using a version control system brought more drive into the conversation. Not only that we had people that aren't using any VCS at all, we also had the 'classic' approach of backup folders and naming conventions as well as the VCS 'junkie' that has to use multiple systems at a time. Just for the records: Git and GitHub seem to be in favour of some of the attendees. Regarding the daily reflection at the end of the day we came up with an easy solution: Wrap it up as a blog entry! Certifications in IT This is kind of a controversy in IT in general. Is it interesting to go for certifications or are they completely obsolete? What are the possibilities to get certified? What are the options we have in Mauritius? How would certificates stand compared to other educational tracks like Computer Science or Web Design. The ratio between craftsmen with certifications like MCP, MSTS, CCNA or LPI versus the ones without wasn't in favour for the first group but there was a high interest in the topic itself and some were really surprised to hear that exam preparations are completely free available online including temporarily voucher codes for either discounts or completely free exams. Furthermore, we discussed possible options on forming so-called study groups on a specific certificates and organising more frequent meetups in order to learn together. Taking into consideration that we have sponsored access to the video course material of Pluralsight (and now PeepCode as well as TrainSignal), we might give it a try by the end of the year. Current favourites are LPIC Level 1 and one of the Microsoft exams 40-78x. Feedback and ideas for the MSCC The closing conversations and discussions about how the MSCC is recently doing, what are the possibilities and what's (hopefully) going to happen in the future were really fertile and I made a couple of mental bullet points which I'm looking forward to tackle down together with orher craftsmen. Eventually, it might be a good option to elaborate on some issues during our weekly Code & Coffee sessions one Wednesday morning. Active discussion on various IT topics like certifications (LPI, MCP, CCNA, etc) and sharing experience Finally, we made it till the end of the planned time. Well, actually the talk was still on and we continued even after 16:00hrs. Unfortunately, we (the children and I) had to leave for evening activities. My resume of the day... It was great to have 15 craftsmen in one room. There are hundreds of IT geeks out there in Mauritius, and as Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community we still have a lot of work to do to pass on the message to some more key players and companies. Currently, it seems that we are able to attract a good number of students in Computer Science... but we have a lot more to offer, even or especially for IT people on the job. • Works using Django development server, but throws import error with Apache using mod_wsgi

  I have a Django project that works fine with the development server that comes with it. No errors are produced at all when I use "django manage.py runserver" and the app works fine, but when I try to use it with mod_wsgi and Apache the browser displays "Internal Server Error" with a 500 error code and it generates an import error in the Apache error log. Here's the error in the log: ImportError: No module named registration I'm using the Django registration module which is located in a path like this: /opt/raj/photos/registration I know that the registration app is in the path because I can fire up a Python shell, import sys, and get a list of paths using sys.path. Here are some of the paths output from Python shell: sys.path ['', '/opt/raj/pyamf', '/opt/raj', '/opt/raj/pictures', '/opt/raj/pictures /registration', '/usr/lib/python2.6',....] Any thoughts would be appreciated.

• Want to improve my simple site/db backup script with auto removal of old backups.

• How to add a view helper directory (zend framework)

My herpers works fines when I put them in application's helpers path.   Hi. I use the following function to rename thumbnails. For example, if I upload a file called "image.png" to an upload folder, and this folder already has a file named "image.png" in it, the new file automatically gets renamed to "image-copy-1.png". If there also is a file called "image-copy-1.png" it gets renamed to "image-copy-2.png" and so on. The following function returns the new filename. At least that's what it is supposed to do... The renaming doesn't seeem to work correctly, though. Sometimes it produces strange results, like: 1.png 1-copy-1.png 1-copy-2.png 1-copy-2-copy-1.png 1-copy-2-copy-3.png I hope you understand my problem, despite my description being somewhat complex... Can you tell me what went wrong here? • Collection View Item binding issue

  I have two entities in a Data Model, ENTITY_A, and ENTITY_B, that are related (ENTITY_A with a one-to-many relationship to ENTITY_B named DetailItems). I have set up a NSCollectionView with its appropriate bindings to ENTITY_A, and have placed on a Collection View Item a label. If I bind the label to [Collection View Item] and with a Model Key Path of [representedObject.FIELD_NAME], it works great. If I bind it to a Model Key Path [representedObject.DetailItems.@count], again it works great. If I bind it to a Model Key Path [[email protected]_NAME], I get the following error on the console: addObserver:forKeyPath:options:context:] is not supported. Key path: @sum.FIELD_NAME. • Troubles configuring SSL for an Apache host

  I configured it on Friday night and all worked well. Today for some reason it stopped working and I can't figure out why. When you goto the secure page it's acting like I have a self-signed certificate and I don't. It's got to be something minor but I can't seem to see it. It's an updated Centos/Apache VM. I have worn Google out.

• IIS 6 forces AppRoot/Starting Point to upper case when Virtual Directory is imported from a file

  I have searched the web for this and couldn't find anything (well one remotely relevant post), so here I am. We have multiple ASP.NET apps in IIS 6 using Forms Authentication with dedicated path for each app. Since path is case sensitive it must match URL's path section exactly. However, because of an incorrect casing in IIS 6 Metabase for AppRoot (or Starting Point in IIS UI) bowser doesn't send Form cookie to the server whenever URL is previously resolved on the server and sent to client in incorrect case. Example: App URL = "https://Test.net/Application1" Cookie path = /Application1 Metabase AppRoot = /LM/W3SVC/1393818691/ROOT/APPLICATIONPATH1 Resolved URL = "https://Test.net/APPLICATIONPATH1" Now to the root cause... We create virtual directories on test server manually in a specific case (matches Path for each application). We then export virtual directory using UI to an XML file, which is then imported to another server (let's say production), at which point IIS decides to uppercase AppRoot element of the metabase. Can anyone shed some light on this? Is there a setting on IIS I am not aware of? I am trying to avoid manual edit of metabase after the import. Is that a bug?
