  • Introduction to WebCenter Personalization: &ldquo;The Conductor&rdquo;

    There are some new faces in the town of WebCenter with the latest 11g PS3 release.  A new component has introduced itself as "Oracle WebCenter Personalization", a.k.a WCP, to simplify delivery of a personalized experience and content to end users.  This posting reviews one of the primary components within WCP: "The Conductor". The Conductor: This ain't just an ordinary cloud... One of the founding principals behind WebCenter Personalization was to provide an open client-side API that remains independent of the technology invoking it, in addition to independence from the architecture running it.  The Conductor delivers this, and much, much more. The Conductor is the engine behind WebCenter Personalization that allows flow-based documents, called "Scenarios", to be managed and executed on the server-side through a well published and RESTful api.      The Conductor also supports an extensible model for custom provider integration that can be easily invoked within a Scenario to promote seamless integration with existing business assets. Introducing the Scenario Conductor Scenarios are declarative offline-authored documents using the custom Personalization JDeveloper bundle included with WebCenter.  A Scenario contains one (or more) statements that can: Create variables that are scoped to the current execution context Iterate over collections, or loop until a specific condition is met Execute one or more statements when a condition is met Invoke other scenarios that exist within the same namespace Invoke a data provider that integrates with custom applications Once a variable is assigned within the Scenario's execution context, it can be referenced anywhere within the same Scenario using the common Expression Language syntax used in J2EE web containers. Scenarios are then published and tested to the Integrated WebLogic Server domain, or published remotely to other domains running WebCenter Personalization. Various Client-side Models The Conductor server API is built upon RESTful services that support a wide variety of clients able to communicate over HTTP.  The Conductor supports the following client-side models: REST:  Popular browser-based languages can be used to manage and execute Conductor Scenarios.  There are other public methods to retrieve configured provider metadata that can be used by custom applications. The Conductor currently supports XML and JSON for it's API syntax. Java: WebCenter Personalization delivers a robust and light-weight java client with the popular Jersey framework as it's foundation.  It has never been easier to write a remote java client to manage remote RESTful services. Expression Language (EL): Allow the results of Scenario execution to control your user interface or embed personalized content using the session-scoped managed bean.  The EL client can also be used in straight JSP pages with minimal configuration. Extensible Provider Framework The Conductor supports a pluggable provider framework for integrating custom code with Scenario execution.  There are two types of providers supported by the Conductor: Function Provider: Function Providers are simple java annotated classes with static methods that are meant to be served as utilities.  Some common uses would include: object creation or instantiation, data transformation, and the like.  Function Providers can be invoked using the common EL syntax from variable assignments, conditions, and loops. For example:  ${myUtilityClass:doStuff(arg1,arg2))} If you are familiar with EL Functions, Function Providers are based on the same concept. Data Provider: Like Function Providers, Data Providers are annotated java classes, but they must adhere to a much more strict object model.  Data Providers have access to a wealth of Conductor services, such as: Access to namespace-scoped configuration API that can be managed by Oracle Enterprise Manager, Scenario execution context for expression resolution, and more.  Oracle ships with three out-of-the-box data providers that supports integration with: Standardized Content Servers(CMIS),  Federated Profile Properties through the Properties Service, and WebCenter Activity Graph.   • Server-Sent Events using GlassFish (TOTD #179)

    Bhakti blogged about Server-Sent Events on GlassFish and I've been planning to try it out for past some days. Finally, I took some time out today to learn about it and build a simplistic example showcasing the touch points. Server-Sent Events is developed as part of HTML5 specification and provides push notifications from a server to a browser client in the form of DOM events. It is defined as a cross-browser JavaScript API called EventSource. The client creates an EventSource by requesting a particular URL and registers an onmessage event listener to receive the event notifications. This can be done as shown var url = 'http://' + document.location.host + '/glassfish-sse/simple';eventSource = new EventSource(url);eventSource.onmessage = function (event) { var theParagraph = document.createElement('p'); theParagraph.innerHTML = event.data.toString(); document.body.appendChild(theParagraph);} This code subscribes to a URL, receives the data in the event listener, adds it to a HTML paragraph element, and displays it in the document. This is where you'll parse JSON and other processing to display if some other data format is received from the URL. The URL to which the EventSource is subscribed to is updated on the server side and there are multipe ways to do that.     I have written a ViewController in which i get data from the internet and display it in a UItableview using a json parser which uses object for key to identify its objects. What i would like your help in is to convert it into MVC pattern to make it less clumsy instead of including everything in the same controller class.   • django/python: is one view that handles two separate models a good idea?

    I am using django multi-table inheritance: Video and Image are models derived from Media. I have implemented two views: video_list and image_list, which are just proxies to media_list. media_list returns images or videos (based on input parameter model) for a certain object, which can be of type Event, Member, or Crag. It alters its behaviour based on input parameter action, which can be either "edit" or "view". The problem is that I need to ask whether the input parameter model contains Video or Image in media_list so that I can do the right thing. Similar condition is also in helper method media_edit_list that is called from the view. I don't particularly like it but the only alternative I can think of is to have separate logic for video_list and image_list and then probably also separate helper methods for videos and images: video_edit_list, image_edit_list, video_view_list, image_view_list. So four functions instead of just two. That I like even less because the video functions would be very similar to the respective image functions. What do you recommend?     I've been trying to programmatically copy custom content type and its custom columns from one web to another for some time now, and I always get different errors or exceptions every time. After yet more tries, I received more strange and cryptic exception from Sharepoint after clicking onto a newly copied custom column in a custom content type. I checked the logs, and this is what I got: Unknown SPRequest erorr occurred.     Hi, I wanted to subclass UINavigationBar (to set a custom background image & text color) and use that for all the navigation bars in my app. Looking at the API docs for UINavigationController, it looks like navigationBar is read-only: @property(nonatomic, readonly) UINavigationBar *navigationBar Is there a way to actually use a custom UINavigationBar in my UIViewControllers?   • Reuse security code between WCF and MVC.NET

    First the background: I jumped into MVC.NET from the Java MVC world, so my implementation below is possibly cheating, I don't know. I avoided fooling with a custom membership provider and I just implemented the base code needed to authenticate and load roles in my LogOn action. Typically I just need to check roles programatically, and have no use for all of the other membership features, so I didn't originally think I needed a full Membership provider. I have a successful WCF project with a custom authentication and authorization layer that I did at least write per the proper API. I implemented it with custom IPrincipal, UserNamePasswordValidator and IAuthorizationPolicy classes to load from an Oracle database. In my WCF services, I use declarative security: [PrincipalPermission(SecurityAction.Demand, Role="ADMIN")]. The question (on the ASP.NET/MCV.NET side): All my reading indicates I should implement a custom Membership/Roles provider, and use [Authorize(Roles="ADMIN")] on my controller actions. At this point, I don't have a true Membership provider, but I'm using the same User class that implements the IPrincipal interface that works with the WCF security. I plan to share common code between the WCF and ASP.NET modules. So my LogOn action is not using the FormsService (and I assume this is bad). I had commented it out, and just used my "UserService" to access the Oracle db. I currently stick the User object into the session and access it from all MVC.NET controllers with "CurrentUser" property which grabs it from the session on demand. But this doesn't work with the [Authorize] attribute; I assume that is because it knows nothing about my custom Principal in the session, and is instead using whatever FormsService.SignIn() produces. I also found that session timeouts screw up the login redirect, the user doesn't get forwarded, instead we get a null exception accessing User from the session, and I assume it is related to my "skipping steps" to get a quick implementation.     Howdy all, I've got a table, which won't delete a row. Specifically, when I try to delete any row with a GEO_SHAPE_ID over 150000000 it simply does not disappear from the DB. I have tried: SQLyog to erase it. DELETE FROM TABLE WHERE GEO_SHAPE_ID = 150000042 (0 rows affected). UNLOCK TABLES then 2. As far as I am aware, bigint is a valid candidate for auto_increment. Anyone know what could be up? You gotta help us, Doc. We’ve tried nothin’ and we’re all out of ideas! DJS. PS. Here is the table construct and some sample data just for giggles.   • Why isn't jQuery automatically appending the JSONP callback?

    The $.getJSON() documentation states: If the specified URL is on a remote server, the request is treated as JSONP instead. See the discussion of the jsonp data type in $.ajax() for more details. The $.ajax() documentation for the jsonp data type states (emphasis mine): Loads in a JSON block using JSONP. Will add an extra "?callback=?" to the end of your URL to specify the callback. So it seems that if I call $.getJSON() with a cross-domain URL, the extra "callback=?" parameter should automatically get added. (Other parts of the documentation support this interpretation.) However, I'm not seeing that behavior. If I don't add the "callback=?" explicitly, jQuery incorrectly makes an XMLHttpRequest (which returns null data since I can't read the response cross-domain). If I do add it explicitly, jQuery correctly makes a <script> request. Here's an example: var URL = "http://www.geonames.org/postalCodeLookupJSON" + "?postalcode=10504&country=US"; function alertResponse(data, status) { alert("data: " + data + ", status: " + status); } $.getJSON(URL, alertResponse); // alerts "data: null, status: success" $.getJSON(URL + "&callback=?", alertResponse); // alerts "data: [object Object], status: undefined" So what's going on?   • Cookies not present after using XMLHttpRequest

    I'm trying to make a bookmarklet to download videos off of YouTube, but I've come across a little problem. To detect the highest quality video available, I use a sort of brute force method, in which I make requests using the XMLHttpRequest object until a 404 isn't returned (I can't do it until a 200 ok is returned because YouTube redirects to a different server if the video is available, and the cross-domain policy won't allow me to access any of that data). Once a working URL is found, I simply set window.location to the URL and the download should start, right? Wrong. A request is made, but for reasons unknown to me, the cookies are stripped and YouTube returns a 403 access denied. This does not happen if the XML requests aren't made before it, i.e. if I just set the window.location to the URL everything works fine, it's when I do the XMLHttpRequest that the cookies aren't sent. The only downside is I can't automatically detect the highest quality, I just have to try every "fmt" parameter manually until I get it right. So my question is: why is the XMLHttpRequest object removing cookies from subsequent requests? This is the first time I've ever done anything in JS by the way, so please, go easy on me. ;)

    Having problems with IE8... This is the code: function replaceImage(el, url) { $('#'+el).html('<a href="'+url+'" target="_blank" class="image">'+basename(url)+'</a>'); $("input[name='"+el+"']").val(url); } Now if you click on the original showImageBrowser() button for the second time, IE will bring up the window but this time it freezes for a few seconds and then you get the alert "Could not open the image browser, please disable your popup blocker." This works fine in Firefox (obviously) but not in IE. I haven't even tried it in IE7/6 because if it doesn't work in 8 then I know I'm going to have problems. Any advice?

    I had an application that was downloading a .CSV file from a password-protected website then processing it futher. I was using FancyURLOpener, and simply hardcoding the username and password. (Obviously, security is not a high priority in this particular instance). Since downloading Python 3.1.2, this code has stopped working. But I guess it is expecting the url to be only: http://domainname/ . When I change the url mapping to: (r'^django/demoInstall$', views.index), it works fine.   • Hudson: how do i use a parameterized build to do svn checkout and svn tag?

    I'm setting up a parameterized build in hudson v1.362. the parameter i'm creting is used to determine which branch to checkout in subversion. I can set my svn repository url like this: https://my.svn.server/branches/${branch} and it does the checkout and the build just fine. now I want to tag the build after it finishes. i'm using the SVN tagging plugin for hudson to do this. so i go to the bottom of the project config screen for the hudson project and turn on "Perform Subversion tagging on successful build". here, i set my Tag Base URL to https://my.svn.server/tags/${branch}-${BUILD_NUMBER} and it gives me errors about those properties not being found. so i change them to environment variable usages like this: https://my.svn.server/tags/${env['branch']}-${env['BUILD_NUMBER']} and the svn tagging plugin is happy. the problem now is that my svn repository at the top is using the ${branch} syntax and the svn tagging plugin barfs on this: moduleLocation: Remote -https://my.svn.server/branches/$branch/ Tag Base URL: 'https://my.svn.server/tags/thebranchiused-1234'. There was no old tag at https://my.svn.server/tags/thebranchiused-1234. ERROR: Publisher hudson.plugins.svn_tag.SvnTagPublisher aborted due to exception java.lang.NullPointerException at hudson.plugins.svn_tag.SvnTagPlugin.perform(SvnTagPlugin.java:180) at hudson.plugins.svn_tag.SvnTagPublisher.perform(SvnTagPublisher.java:79) at hudson.tasks.BuildStepMonitor$3.perform(BuildStepMonitor.java:36) at hudson.model.AbstractBuild$AbstractRunner.perform(AbstractBuild.java:601) at hudson.model.AbstractBuild$AbstractRunner.performAllBuildSteps(AbstractBuild.java:580) at hudson.model.AbstractBuild$AbstractRunner.performAllBuildSteps(AbstractBuild.java:558) at hudson.model.Build$RunnerImpl.cleanUp(Build.java:167) at hudson.model.Run.run(Run.java:1295) at hudson.model.FreeStyleBuild.run(FreeStyleBuild.java:46) at hudson.model.ResourceController.execute(ResourceController.java:88) at hudson.model.Executor.run(Executor.java:124) Finished: FAILURE notice the first line, there: the svn tag is looking at ${branch} as part of the repository url... it's not parsing out the property value. i tried to change my original Repository URL for svn to use the ${env['branch']} syntax, but that blows up on the original checkout because this syntax is not getting parsed at all by the checkout. help?! how do i use a parameterized build to set the svn url for checkout and for tagging my build?!
