  • Queue access to the database to avoid multiple cache items

    I have a music related ASP.NET web site which caches a lot of static information from the database on the first request. Sometimes, the application is reset and cache is cleared while the application is on heavy load and then all http requests go to the database to retrieve that static data and cache it for other requests. How can I ensure that only one request go to the database and cache the results, so that other request simply read that info from cache and not needlessly retrieve the same info over and over again. Can I use thread locking? For example, can I do something like lock(this) { db access here }?

    Hi, it seems that adding for example a button Dim myButton as New Button and then addHandler to mySub("lol", 255) is not possible. Where mySub is Shared Sub MySub(byRef myString as string, myInteger as Integer) So: addHandler myButton.click, addressOf mySub("lol", 255) - returns an error saying it does not work with parentheses or whatever. I somehow see why this might not be possible, so I'm looking for a work-around on this problem. Please help _jakeCake

    I am trying to add a extra column to a dataset after a query has completed. I have a database relationship of the following: Employees / \ Groups EmployeeGroups Empoyees holds all the data for that individual, I'll name the unique key the UserID. Groups holds all the groups that a employee can be a part of, i.e. Super User, Admin, User; etc. I will name the unique key GroupID EmployeeGroups holds all the associations of which groups each employee belongs too. (UserID | GroupID) What I am trying to accomplish is after querying for a all users I want to loop though each user and add what groups that user is a part of by adding a new column to the dataset named 'Groups' which is a string to insert the values of the next query to get all the groups that user is a part of. Then by user of databinding populate a listview with all employees and their group associations My code is as follows; Position 5 is the new column I am trying to add to the dataset. string theQuery = "select UserID, FirstName, LastName, EmployeeID, Active from Employees"; DataSet theEmployeeSet = itsDatabase.runQuery(theQuery); DataColumn theCol = new DataColumn("Groups", typeof(string)); theEmployeeSet.Tables[0].Columns.Add(theCol); foreach (DataRow theRow in theEmployeeSet.Tables[0].Rows) { theRow.ItemArray[5] = "1234"; } At the moment, the code will create the new column but when i assign the data to that column nothing will be assigned, what am I missing?     I have a parent master table that is generic enough to hold the common information of the children. Since the children were substantially different, we created separate tables for them. So I have something like this: tblMaster -------- MasterID int Name varchar(50) --Common to all children and there are a bunch of fields like this ChildType int -- Type of Child either ChildOne or ChildTwo ChildID int -- need to store ChildOneID or ChildTwoID depending on type of Child, so that i can refer to children tblChild1 -------- ChildOneID int IDENTITY tblChild2 --------- ChildTwoID int IDENTITY Should I have a ChildID in the master that is either ChildOneID or ChildTwoID based on the ChildType column? I have a number of children and I have simplified it for this question. The other way is to add ChildOneID and ChildTwoID as columns in the master, but since i have a number of columns, I will have a lot of null columns EDIT: Any help is appreciated

  • Changing the namespace for a Web Reference

    When I add a web reference to a project, it comes up with a default namespace of: com.wpdevs.myservice. This is the namespace I'd have expected it to use in the application. When I add the using statement to the project, I have to add: using MyProject.com.wpdevs.myservice; I'd like to find a way to eliminate having to reference the project name in the using statement. The project I'm putting together now is destined to be converted into a VS Project template and having that rather strange reference in there, or even having a per-project reference, isn't something I'd like to have in the project.

    I'm writing a banking system and my customer wants support both Russian and American numeric standards in decimal digits delimiter. Respectively . and ,. Now only , works properly. Perhaps because of web server's OS format (Russian is set). String like 2000.00 throws a FormatException: Input string was not in a correct format. How to fix that? Are there any other ideas except String.Replace('.', ',') on FormView.ItemInserting event?

  • How to program three editions Light, Pro, Ultimate in one solution

    I'd like to know how best to program three different editions of my C# ASP.NET 3.5 application in VS2008 Professional (which includes a web deployment project). I have a Light, Pro and Ultimate edition (or version) of my application. At the moment I've put all in one solution with three build versions in configuration manager and I use preprocessor directives all over the code (there are around 20 such constructs in some ten thousand lines of code, so it's overseeable): #if light //light code #endif #if pro //pro code #endif //etc... I've read in stackoverflow for hours and thought to encounter how e.g. Microsoft does this with its different Windows editions, but did not find what I expected. Somewhere there is a heavy discussion about if preprocessor directives are evil. What I like with those #if-directives is: the side-by-side code of differences, so I will understand the code for the different editions after six months and the special benefit to NOT give out compiled code of other versions to the customer. OK, long explication, repeated question: What's the best way to go?

Then ProductName is a Primary Column Group. It works perfect, But it shows the ProductNames in alphabatic order. I want it to show the ProductNames in custom order(defined by me).Like, ProductNo5 in 3rd column, ProductNo8 in 4th column, ProductNo1 in 5th column ... and so on!

    I have TableA in a many-to-many relationship with TableC via TableB. That is, TableA TableB TableC id | val fkeyA | fkeyC id | data I wish the do select sum(val) on TableA, grouping by the relationship(s) to TableC. Every entry in TableA has at least one relationship with TableC. For example, TableA 1 | 25 2 | 30 3 | 50 TableB 1 | 1 1 | 2 2 | 1 2 | 2 2 | 3 3 | 1 3 | 2 should output 75 30 since rows 1 and 3 in Table have the same relationships to TableC, but row 2 in TableA has a different relationship to TableC. How can I write a SQL query for this?

    Hi, gurus: I installed opencv2.1, made a new project (proj_A) using vs2008, used it for my computer vision tasks, it works fine. I copied an old project (proj_B, also made using vs2008) from other PC, compile it with ".h" and ".lib" files copied from opencv1.0 (which I did not install onto my PC), it compiles fine. I re-directed ".h" and ".lib" files in proj_B to opencv2.1 folders instead, compiled the proj_B, and then I got these errors from cxcore.hpp: class CV_EXPORTS RNG { public: enum { A=4164903690U, UNIFORM=0, NORMAL=1 }; // errors here, line 936 errors are: 5c:\opencv2.1\include\opencv\cxcore.hpp(936) : error C2143: syntax error : missing '}' before 'constant' 5c:\opencv2.1\include\opencv\cxcore.hpp(936) : error C2059: syntax error : 'constant' 5c:\opencv2.1\include\opencv\cxcore.hpp(936) : error C2143: syntax error : missing ';' before '}' 5c:\opencv2.1\include\opencv\cxcore.hpp(936) : error C2238: unexpected token(s) preceding ';' (400+ similar errors, but I believe the answer should be the same, so only list 1 set here) I compared setting for proj_A and proj_B, made them identical, and find no improvement. proj_A works well, proj_B refuse to compile. May I know what's wrong? Urgent, need to get it solved ASAP! Thanks a lot!

  • Unit Testing - Am I doing it right?

    Hi everyone, Basically I have been programing for a little while and after finishing my last project can fully understand how much easier it would have been if I'd have done TDD. I guess I'm still not doing it strictly as I am still writing code then writing a test for it, I don't quite get how the test becomes before the code if you don't know what structures and how your storing data etc... but anyway... Kind of hard to explain but basically lets say for example I have a Fruit objects with properties like id, color and cost. (All stored in textfile ignore completely any database logic etc) FruitID FruitName FruitColor FruitCost 1 Apple Red 1.2 2 Apple Green 1.4 3 Apple HalfHalf 1.5 This is all just for example. But lets say I have this is a collection of Fruit (it's a List<Fruit>) objects in this structure. And my logic will say to reorder the fruitids in the collection if a fruit is deleted (this is just how the solution needs to be). E.g. if 1 is deleted, object 2 takes fruit id 1, object 3 takes fruit id2. Now I want to test the code ive written which does the reordering, etc. How can I set this up to do the test? Here is where I've got so far. Basically I have fruitManager class with all the methods, like deletefruit, etc. It has the list usually but Ive changed hte method to test it so that it accepts a list, and the info on the fruit to delete, then returns the list. Unit-testing wise: Am I basically doing this the right way, or have I got the wrong idea? and then I test deleting different valued objects / datasets to ensure method is working properly.   • Dubugging a program not run within the debugger and without a crash

    I left a program running last night, it worked fine for about 5 hours and then one of its built-in self-diagnostic tests detected a problem and brought up a dialog box telling me the issue. The program was built with debug information (/Zi). Is it possible to somehow get the debugger started so I can examine the value of some variables within the program? Or is it too late?

  • "lock request time out period exceeded" Error When Trying to See DB Hierarchies

    I have a DB that I can run basic queries (albeit much slower than normal) off of. When I try to see the hierarchy trees for tables, views, or procedures in SSMS Object Explorer, I get the "lock request time out period exceeded". My Report Server reports that run off of objects in this DB are no longer completing. Jobs associated with procedures stored on this DB also do not run. I tried using sp_who2 to find and kill all connections on the DB. This has not solved the problem. What is going on here? How can I resolve this?

    I have a need to take backup of a SQL Server Db with tons of data in it and import into another environment for updating and testing. Since, i am not interested in the data, i just want to recreate the schema on my other server. There is an option called 'Generate Script', but is throwing errors running them on the target server. Curious, if anyone attempted to write a SQL script that would run through all the tables in the db and clear the rows, thereby i could just create the schema backup as .bak file and restore it into another server.

    Hi All, At the moment, when I try to register a user using the default Business Template in Silverlight, I am getting an error. Basically I am following a tutorial found on Channel 9 on how to build a business app with Silverlight. "An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 – Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 5) An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 – Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 1326)". I found a blog where it identifies the problem, and followed every step, however I am still getting the same problems.
