  • Security Issue in LinkedIn &ndash; View any 3rd profile without a premium account.

On opening the contact on my desktop, I was surprised to see, I need to upgrade my account to view the contact. Doing some research along with my wife, I found this simple security vulnerability from LinkedIn that can let anyone view a contact’s full profile even when you have a “not upgraded” LinkedIn account and that the contact is a “3rd + Everyone Else”. Here’s an example of what I am talking about. I just made a random search on LinkedIn for a contact whose name starts with Sacha. Do note, this is just a walkthrough and I am not publicizing any Sacha. I check the “3rd + Everyone Else” and find a “LinkedIn Member”. On clicking this person’s profile to view, I am presented with the following page, asking me to upgrade. Make a note of this page’s web address and you get the profile id from it. For example, for this contact, the page address is: http://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=868XXX35 The Profile Id for this contact is 868XXX35. Now, open following page where the Profile Id is the same as the one we grabbed a moment earlier. https://touch.www.linkedin.com/?#profile/868XXX35 The mobile page exposes this contact information and you even get the possibility to connect to this person without an introduction mail (InMail). I hope someone from LinkedIn sees and issues a fix for this. I am pretty sure, it’s something that they don’t want the user to do without purchasing an upgrade package.

  • Add SQL Azure database to Azure Web Role and persist data with entity framework code first.

    In my last post I went for a warts n all approach to set up a web role on Azure. In this post I’ll describe how to add an SQL Azure database to the project. This will be described with an as minimal as possible amount of code and screen dumps. All questions are welcome in the comments area. Please don’t email since questions answered in the comments field is made available to other visitors. As an example we will add a comments section to the site we used in the previous post (Länk här). Steps: 1. Create a Comments entity and then use Scaffolding to set up controller and view, and add ConnectionString to web.config. 2. Create SQL Azure database in Management Portal and link the new database 3. Test it online!   1. Right click Models folder, choose add, choose “class…” . Name the Class Comment. 1.1 Replace the Code in the class with the following: using System.Data.Entity; namespace MvcWebRole1.Models { public class Comment {    public int CommentId { get; set; }    public string Name { get; set; }      public string Content { get; set; } } public class CommentsDb : DbContext { public DbSet<Comment> CommentEntries { get; set; } } } Now Entity Framework can create a database and a table named Comment. Build your project to assert there are no build errors.   1.2 Right click Controllers folder, choose add, choose “class…” . Name the Class CommentController and fill out the values as in the example below.     1.3 Click Add. Finally click Connections strings in the right menu to get the connection string we need to add in our web.debug.config file.   2.2 Now, take a copy of the connection String earlier added to the web.config and paste in web.debug.conifg in the connectionstrings node. Replace everything within “ “ in the copied connectionstring with that you got from SQL Azure. You will have something like this:   2.3 Rebuild the application, right click the cloud project and choose “Package…” (if you haven’t set up publishing profile which we will do in our next blog post). Remember to choose the right config file, use debug for staging and release for production so your databases won’t collide. You should see something like this:   2.4 Go to Management Portal and click the Web Services menu, choose your service and click update in the bottom menu.   2.5 Link the newly created database to your application. Click the LINKED RESOURCES in the top menu and then click “Link” in the bottom menu. You should get something like this. 3. Alright then. Under the Dashboard you can find the link to your application. Click it to open it in a browser and then go to ~/Comments to try it out just the way we did locally. Success and end of this story!

  • Most standard / Best way to keep the same top menu among different web pages?

    What's the standard way to keep the same menu on top among different web pages without having to duplicate it on each page (I don't mean that it doesn't reload like when using frames and only loading the bottom part; I want the menu to scroll with the page when scrolling down, like this, this, this and pretty much every single web page that exists). I found this answer but the guy can't use Php and I can. Plus, I see several people giving different suggestions, but I assume there is a standard since pretty much every single web page in the whole web have a menu on top that stays the same among multiple pages . I'm just a newbie on web design (I can program Php and Html easily but I have no idea about standards and stuff like that since I'm self-taught guy ;)). What I would normally do is to include the menu with php but I'm not sure if this is the "standard".

  • How do I manipulate Handler Mappings cleanly in IIS7 using the Microsoft.Web.Administration namespac

    I asked this over on Stack Overflow but maybe it's something an experienced IIS 7 administrator might know more about, so I'm asking here as well. When manipulating Handler Mappings using the Microsoft.Web.Administration namespace, is there a way to remove the <remove name="handler name"> tag added at the site level. For example, I have a site which inherits all the handler mappings from the global handler mappings configuration.   • Diagnosing Solaris 8 server memory and swap space usage

    Hello everyone. Essentially, my question is related to memory allocation for Solaris virtual machines. I am running a couple of old Sun ONE 6 Java web servers on two Solaris 8 virtual machines. I see that there's a reasonable amount of swap space being used, but I'm not exactly sure if this could indicate a need to add more RAM to these machines. At service peak hours (mornings usually), the response time of the web application these servers host jumps up to at most 11 seconds (somewhat detrimental for a relatively simple web page loading action). Average response time at non peak times is about 5 seconds. What would you be able to infer about the RAM usage for these machines from the ouput below? Is this information reasonably sufficient? Or would I need to run some other commands to rule out server memory starvation? Finally, since there is a Java application at the core of the setup, I've also thought about: 1) Trace the heap's Object allocation to detect potential memory leaks. 2) Do some performance profiling to see if this instead related to networking delays. I mention this since the application talks with a single Oracle Database, but I would doubt this to be the case since they're pretty close from a network segmentation perspective. I appreciate any kind of insight and feedback you could provide. Thanks for your time and help.   • Fluent NHibernate View Mapping requires Id Column

    Hi Trying to use FNH to map a view - FNH insists on having a Id property mapped. However not all of my views have a unique identifing column. I can get around this with XML mappings as I can just specify a <id type="int"> <generator class="increment"/> </id> at the top of the mapping. Is there any way to duplicate this in FNH...? TIA Matt

  • Attempting to update partial view using Ajax.ActionLink gives error in MicrosoftAjax.js

    I am trying to update the partial view ( "OnlyPartialView" ) from an Ajax.ActionLink which is in the same partial view. While executing the foreach loop it throws this error in a popup box in visual studio: htmlfile: Unknown runtime error This error puts the break point in the MicrosoftAjax.js file, Line 5, Col 83,632, Ch 83632. The page is not updated appropriately. Any thoughts or ideas on how I could troubleshoot this? It was previously nested partial views, I've simplified it for this example but this code produces the same error. Is there a better way to do what I am trying to do?   • trying to override getView in a SimpleCursorAdapter gives NullPointerException

    Would very much appreciate any help or hint on were to go next. I'm trying to change the content of a row in ListView programmatically. In one row there are 3 TextView and a ProgressBar. I want to animate the ProgressBar if the 'result' column of the current row is zero. After reading some tutorials and docs, I came to the conclusion that LayoutInflater has to be used and getView() - overriden. Maybe I am wrong on this. If I return row = inflater.inflate(R.layout.row, null); from the function, it gives NullPointerException.     Hello, I'm currently using ... - (void)touchesBegan:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent *)event { - (void)touchesEnded:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent *)event { - (void)touchesMoved:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent *)event { to detect swipes. I've got everything working. The only problem is if the user touches on top of something (eg a UIButton or something) the - (void)touchesBegan:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent *)event { is not called. Is there something like touchesBegan but will work if I touch ANYWHERE on the view? Thanks in advance, David

However, I didn't find any solution for this problem I'm having: I have a UITableView with 2 sections, and no rows when the app is launched for the first time. The user can fill the sections later on as he wishes (the content is not relevant here). The UITableView looks good when filled with rows, but looks pretty ugly when there is none (the 2 header sections are stuck together with no white space in between). That is why I'd like to add a nice "No row" view in between when there is no row. I'd like to be able to pass in a collection of models or view-models (e.g., IQueryable<MyViewModel>) and get back an HTML table that uses the DisplayName attribute for the headings (th elements) and Html.Display(propertyName) for the cells (td elements). Each row should correspond to one item in the collection. The <td> elements are not working because the Html in <%= Html.Display(property.DisplayName) %> contains the model for the view, which is a collection of items, not the item itself. Somehow, I need to obtain an HtmlHelper object whose Model property is the current item, but I'm not sure how to do that. How do I solve these two problems?
