• Resetting or refreshing a database connection

  This Android application on Google uses the following method to refresh the database after replacing the database file with a backup: public void resetDbConnection() { this.cleanup(); this.db = SQLiteDatabase.openDatabase( "/data/data/com.totsp.bookworm/databases/bookworm.db", null, SQLiteDatabase.OPEN_READWRITE); } I did not build this app, and I am not sure what happens. I am trying to make this idea work in my own application, but the data appears to be cached by the views, and the app continues to show data from the database that was replaced, even after I call cleanup() and reopen the database. I have to terminate and restart the activity in order to see the new data. I tried to call invalidate on my TabHost view, which pretty much contains everything. I thought that the views would redraw and refresh their underlying data, but this did also not have the expected result. I ended up restarting the activity programmatically, which works, but this seems to be a drastic measure. Is there a better way?

  Basically I have my Emacs set up so it has a GUI specific elisp, but when starting it in daemon mode this doesn't evaluate. The code is something like: ;; gui.el (when window-system (progn ;; do stuff here )) I'd like this file (or at least the code within it—perhaps a funtion) to be re-evaluated when I run emacsclient -c on the command line, as I miss out on all my font-lock and color-theme goodness (as I have that stuff set to runonly when a GUI exists).

• Can a PL/pgSQL function contain a dynamic subquery?

  I am writing a PL/pgSQL function. The function has input parameters which specify (indirectly), which tables to read filtering information from. The function embeds business logic which allows it to select data from different tables based on the input arguments. The function dynamically builds a subquery which returns filtering data which is then used to run the main query. My questions are: Is it 'legal' to use a dynamic subquery in a PL/pgSQL function. I cant see why not - but this question is related to the next one. AFAIK, PL/pgSQL are cached or precompiled by the query engine. How does having a function that generates dynamic subqueries impact the work of the query engine?

• Setting outbound 'Expires:' in Squid server's HTTP header

  I'm having a problem where items served by my Squid server are being cached by Limelight for too long, sometimes days. It happens when a piece of content has been static for a long time (weeks) and then undergoes numerous changes in a matter of hours. Limelight gets its content from our Squid server and I'm told that if I can add 'Expires: 15m' in the HTTP header the Squid server sends, Limelight will not cache the image for more than 15 min. Unfortunately, I can fond no setting in Squid that will allow me to add this to the header. • Stand-alone Java code formatter/beautifier/pretty printer?

  I'm interested in learning about the available choices of high-quality, stand-alone source code formatters for Java. The formatter must be stand-alone, that is, it must support a "batch" mode that is decoupled from any particular development environment. Ideally it should be independent of any particular operating system as well. So, a built-in formatter for the IDE du jour is of little interest here (unless that IDE supports batch mode formatter invocation, perhaps from the command line). A formatter written in closed-source C/C++ that only runs on, say, Windows is not ideal, but is somewhat interesting. To be clear, a "formatter" (or "beautifier") is not the same as a "style checker." A formatter accepts source code as input, applies styling rules, and produces styled source code that is semantically equivalent to the original source code. A style checker also applies styling rules, but it simply reports rule violations without producing modified source code as output. So the picture looks like this: Formatter (produces modified source code that conforms to styling rules) Read Source Code → Apply Styling Rules → Write Styled Source Code Style Checker (does not produce modified source code) Read Source Code → Apply Styling Rules → Write Rule Violations Further Clarifications Solutions must be highly configurable. I want to be able to specify my own style, not simply select from a canned list. Also, I'm not looking for a general purpose pretty-printer written in Java that can pretty-print many things. I want to style Java code. I'm also not necessarily interested in a grand-unified formatter for many languages. I suppose it might be nice for a solution to have support for languages other than Java, but that is not a requirement. Furthermore, tools that only perform code highlighting are right out. I'm also not interested in a web service. I want a tool that I can run locally. Finally, solutions need not be restricted to open source, public domain, shareware, free software, commercial, or anything else. All forms of licensing are acceptable.

• Success verification of mail() function PHP

  Hi Is it possible to check if the php can get some kind of a ping/flag back from exchange mail server to say "yes, email has been sent off to the intended recipient"? According to the PHP manual, the return of mail() boolean could mean; "It is important to note that just because the mail was accepted for delivery, it does NOT mean the mail will actually reach the intended destination." Does this mean, PHP can return success but actually there could be a problem on the mail server that php wouldn't know about it? and in this case no email has been sent and the user is none the wiser? • Binding Silverlight UserControl custom properties to its' elements

  Hi. I'm trying to make a simple crossword puzzle game in Silverlight 2.0. I'm working on a UserControl-ish component that represents a square in the puzzle. I'm having trouble with binding up my UserControl's properties with its' elements. I've finally (sort of) got it working (may be helpful to some - it took me a few long hours), but wanted to make it more 'elegant'. I've imagined it should have a compartment for the content and a label (in the upper right corner) that optionally contains its' number. The content control probably be a TextBox, while label control could be a TextBlock.   I have seen posts all over the internet that talk about how to fix the TransientObjectExceptions during save/update/delete but I am having this problem when calling list on my Criteria. I have two objects A and B. A has a field named b which is of type B. In my mapping b is mapped as a many-to-one. This all runs in a larger persistence framework (the framework is kind of like Core Data) and so I don't use any cascades in my hibernate mappings since cascades are handled at a higher level. • Relying on nhibernate's second level cache vs pushing objects into the session

  I have some big entities which are frequently accessed in the same session. For example, in my application there is a reporting page which consist of dynamically generated chart images. For each chart image on this page, the client makes requests to corresponding controller and the controller generates images using some entities. I can either use asp.net's session dictionary for "caching" those entities or rely on nhibernate's second level cache support with using cached queries for example. What is your opinion? By the way I will use shared hosting, is nhibernate's second level cache hosting friendly? Thanks.

  My application has a view controller that extends UITableViewController. However, if my app ever receives a low memory warning, the above view changes to UITableViewStylePlain. There is no associated xib file with the View/Controller. The viewDidUnload and didReceiveMemoryWarning methods are straightforward: - (void)didReceiveMemoryWarning { // Releases the view if it doesn't have a superview. • Calculating string sizes on iPhone on a background thread

  I've got some somewhat hefty string size calculations happening in my app (each one takes close to 500ms, and happens when the user scrolls to a new "page" in my app (like the Weather app). The delay only happens once per page, as the calculation only needs to be run once (and can even be cached for subsequent launches with the same data). Anyway, I still like to not block the UI for this type of work, as to me it screams using threads, but I know UIKit is not meant to be used from other threads. (I know NSString is not part of UIKit, but the string sizing methods are part of the UIKitAdditions...) So how should I go about doing this? What's the best way to not block the UI and do so safely?

Our file system is mounted in READ-ONLY mode when we need to detect the removal of the drive. We noticed the other day that we were able to unplug a hard drive and everything continued to run without a hitch until the next time we attempted to read from a file on disk.

  I have a situation where I need to, when in Radgrid Edit Mode and user makes a selection on a contained dropdownlist, display a modalPopup containing a Checkboxlist populated with data that relates to dropdownlist selection. When Selections are made on the checkboxlist, and OK button clicked, I want to return to the RadGrid Edit template, and populate a textbox in the template with the checkbox selected information. • Problem getting ar_mailer/ar_sendmail working on new server

  Hey all. I've got a new app up and running on a new ubuntu server. It's working fine generally but i can't get ar_sendmail working. I'm following the instructions on this page: http://www.ameravant.com/posts/sending-tons-of-emails-in-ruby-on-rails-with-ar_mailer The setup is all done, ie i can "deliver mails" which just saves records in my Email table. Now i want to get the ar_sendmail daemon running to actually send them. (so i'm at 'Running ar_sendmail in daemon mode' in that web page). First thing: ar_sendmail --mailq >>ar_sendmail: command not found Ok...so, where is ar_sendmail? I have a look and there's an ar_sendmail file in the bin folder of the ar_mailer plugin, so i add the location of that to my path. I don't know if this was the right thing to do or not. Ok, so try again. ar_sendmail --mailq /var/www/apps/millionaire/vendor/plugins/ar_mailer/bin/ar_sendmail:3:in `require': no such file to load -- action_mailer/ar_sendmail (LoadError) from /var/www/apps/millionaire/vendor/plugins/ar_mailer/bin/ar_sendmail:3 hmm. Here's the offending file, there's not much there. #!/usr/bin/env ruby require 'action_mailer/ar_sendmail' ActionMailer::ARSendmail.run ok...so it literally is just trying to require this and can't find it. The file, action_mailer/ar_sendmail.rb is in the ar_mailer plugin, in it's lib folder. So, given that it's being called from inside the plugin, it should be able to see this right? I've got a feeling that i'm way off the track here and have missed something simple. Can anyone set me straight? I'm using rails 2.3.4 in case that's relevant. EDIT - i just realised something kind of dumb: when i call ar_sendmail from the command line like this, i'm just loading that one file, which doesn't know where it's supposed to look for the rest of the stuff, i think. Which really makes me think that i'm not trying to run the right thing. Is the ar_sendmail daemon a seperate program altogether, that i would get with apt_get or something? EDIT2 - i made some progress by installing the ar_mailer gem (which the guide said i shouldn't do) and that does seem to run. It's sending some mail request somewhere and clearing the Email table of pending emails. Running ar_sendmail in -ov (oneshot verbal) mode i see it report this for example: sent email 00000000019 from [email protected] to [email protected]: # So, it actually looks like it's working now and i just need to set up the ACTUAL THING WHICH SENDS EMAILS. sigh. still grateful for any advice. thanks, max

• When giving DataSource to a BindingSource shows only the cachedList Items.

  I have a BindingSource on a form with MyObject Datasource. I Open another form and passing MyObject where i give its EntitySetObject reference to another BindingSource. Everything ok. Deleting an Entity on EntitySetObject reference and closing the form with EndEdit(). OK. Back in the "First" form i add one Entity in MyObject.EntitySetObject and again opening the form. But i have noticed that when giving the datasource to the BindingSource i have 2 items in cachedlist and 3 entities. Control now shows only the 2 cached items. Any Idea?

• Implement Semi-Round-Robin file which can be expanded and saved on demand

  Ok, that title is going to be a little bit confusing. Let me try to explain it a little bit better. I am building a logging program. The program will have 3 main states: Write to a round-robin buffer file, keeping only the last 10 minutes of data. Write to a buffer file, ignoring the time (record all data). Rename entire buffer file, and start a new one with the past 10 minutes of data (and change state to 1). Now, the use case is this. I have been experiencing some network bottlenecks from time to time in our network. So I want to build a system to record TCP traffic when it detects the bottleneck (detection via Nagios). However by the time it detects the bottlenecking, most of the useful data has already been transmitted. So, what I'd like is to have a deamon that runs something like dumpcap all the time. In normal mode, it'll only keep the past 10 minutes of data (Since there's no point in keeping a boat load of data if it's not needed). But when Nagios alerts, I will send a signal in the deamon to store everything. Then, when Naigos recovers it will send another signal to stop storing and flush the buffer to a save file. Now, the problem is that I can't see how to cleanly store a rotating 10 minutes of data. I could store a new file every 10 minutes and delete the old ones if in mode 1. But that seems a bit dirty to me (especially when it comes to figuring out when the alert happened in the file). Ideally, the file that was saved should be such that the alert is always at the 10:00 mark in the file. While that is possible with new files every 10 minutes, it seems like a bit dirty to "repair" the files to that point. Any ideas? Should I just do a rotating file system and combine them into 1 at the end (doing quite a bit of post-processing)? Is there a way to implement the semi-round-robin file cleanly so that there is no need for any post-processing? Thanks Oh, and the language doesn't matter as much at this stage (I'm leaning towards Python, but have no objection to any other language. It's less of an issue than the overall design)...

• Full page reload on Post/Redirect/Get ignoring cache control

  I have a page that loads a lot of images, css and javascript. I've added a far future Expires header and set Cache-Control to public on these external dependencies so they should be cached. But every time I do a Post/Redirect/Get chrome tries to load these again. This behavior is very similar to reloading the page. I've added ETags and handle the If-None-Match header which helps a bit, but it still generates too many useless requests.
