  Hello, I have the following (simplified) query select P.peopleID, P.peopleName, ED.DataNumber from peopleTable P left outer join ( select PE.peopleID, PE.DataNumber from formElements FE inner join peopleExtra PE on PE.ElementID = FE.FormElementID where FE.FormComponentID = 42 ) ED on ED.peopleID = P.peopleID Without the sub-query this procedure takes ~7 seconds, but with it, it takes about 3minutes. Given that table peopleExtra is rather large, is there a more efficient way to do that join (short of restructuring the DB) ?

• Best way to return result from business layer to presentation layer when using LINQ-to-SQL

  I have a business layer that has DTOs that are used in the presentation layer. This application uses entity framework. Here is an example of a class called RoleDTO: public class RoleDTO { public Guid RoleId { get; set; } public string RoleName { get; set; } public string RoleDescription { get; set; } public int? OrganizationId { get; set; } } In the BLL I want to have a method that returns a list of DTO. I would like to know which is the better approach: returning IQueryable or list of DTOs. Although I feel that returning IQueryable is not a good idea because the connection needs to be open. I want to build an invoice web application, an invoice can have many items, and each user can have an inventory list of product items that they can store and choose to add to an invoice item. My questions are: 1. Should I store all product inventory for all users using my application under one single table? Or have a separate product inventory table created for each user? 2. Is this even possible? 1 table is easier, but what if this single table grows too big, will I have a problem? (primary key INT).

  Hi How can i pass the different types of errors from Data access layer to presentation layer? suppose if we take the northwind database scenario I want to delete the customer, so i selected one customer in ui and clicked the "delete" button.It internally calls the "delete" in data access layer. The prerequisite for deleting the customer is that the customer doesn't have any orders.So in data access layer we wil check whether that customer has any orders.If the customer has orders how can we pass the message from dal to presentation layer that the customer has orders and we don't delete.   I have a table table1 (account, last_contact_date, insert_date), account and last_contact_date are primary keys. The insert_date is set with the time the recored being added by calling getdate(). I also have a temporary table #temp(account, last_contact_date) which I use to update the table1.   I'm trying to set up a query that shows the first post of each thread and is ordered by the date of the last post in each thread. • Need help tuning a SQL statement

  I've got a table that has two fields (custno and custno2) that need to be searched from a query. I didn't design this table, so don't scream at me. :-) I need to find all records where either the custno or custno2 matches the value returned from a query on the same table based on a titleno. In other words, the user types in 1234 for the titleno. My query searches the table to find the custno associated with the titleno. It also looks for the custno2 for that titleno. Then it needs to do a search on the same table for all other records that have either the custno or custno2 returned in the previous search in the custno or custno2 fields for those other records. Here is what I've come up with: SELECT BILLYR, BILLNO, TITLENO, VINID, TAXPAID, DUEDATE, DATEPIF, PROPDESC FROM TRCDBA.BILLSPAID WHERE CUSTNO IN (select custno from trcdba.billspaid where titleno = '1234' union select custno2 from trcdba.billspaid where titleno = '1234' and custno2 != '') OR CUSTNO2 IN (select custno from trcdba.billspaid where titleno = '1234' union select custno2 from trcdba.billspaid where titleno = '1234' and custno2 != '') The query takes about 5-10 seconds to return data. Can it be rewritten to work faster?

• SQL Server mirroring connection doesnt work

  I have 2 servers srv-erp1 and srv-erp3. I made them mirror on each other. All setup is done by lots of tutorials and examples. But when I call ALTER DATABASE MIRROR_TEST SET PARTNER = 'TCP://srv-erp3:5022' It`s response is: The server network address "TCP://srv-erp3:5022" can not be reached or does not exist. Check the network address name and that the ports for the local and remote endpoints are operational. I go to cmd on srv-erp3 and use netstat -an... this port is listening. I go to cmd on srv-erp1 and use telnet srv-erp3 5022...and its ok to connect. All firewalls are turned off. The only difference in config of srvrs is that srv-erp1 is on Windows Server 2003 R2 x64, and srv-erp3 is on Windows 2008 R2 x64 What can be the reason of this problem? Regards, Dmitry.

• Can't get DataGridView to refresh over Linq to SQL (WinForm)

  Very strange situation here: I'm using L2S to populate a DataGridView. However, if someone is editing the grid and makes a mistake, I want them to be able to hit a refresh button and have their mistakes erased by reloading from the datasource. For the life of me, I can't get it to work. The code I am currently using on my refresh button is this: private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { this.DataContext.Refresh(RefreshMode.OverwriteCurrentValues); RefreshUserGrid(); } But the damn GridView remains unaffected. All that happens is the selected row becomes unselected. I have tried .Refresh(), .Invalidate(), I've tried changing the DataSource to NULL and back again (all suggestions from similar posts here)....none of it works. The only time the Grid refreshes is if I restart the app. I must be missing something fundamental, but I'm totally stumped and so are my colleagues. Any ideas? Thanks!

• BULK INSERT from one table to another all on the server

  I have to copy a bunch of data from one database table into another. I can't use SELECT ... INTO because one of the columns is an identity column. Also, I have some changes to make to the schema. I was able to use the export data wizard to create an SSIS package, which I then edited in Visual Studio 2005 to make the changes desired and whatnot. It's certainly faster than an INSERT INTO, but it seems silly to me to download the data to a different computer just to upload it back again. (Assuming that I am correct that that's what the SSIS package is doing). Is there an equivalent to BULK INSERT that runs directly on the server, allows keeping identity values, and pulls data from a table? (as far as I can tell, BULK INSERT can only pull data from a file) Edit: I do know about IDENTITY_INSERT, but because there is a fair amount of data involved, INSERT INTO ... SELECT is kinda of slow. SSIS/BULK INSERT dumps the data into the table without regards to indexes and logging and whatnot, so it's faster. (Of course creating the clustered index on the table once it's populated is not fast, but it's still faster than the INSERT INTO...SELECT that I tried in my first attempt) Edit 2: The schema changes include (but are not limited to) the following: 1. Splitting one table into two new tables. In the future each will have its own IDENTITY column, but for the migration I think it will be simplest to use the identity from the original table as the identity for the both new tables. Once the migration is over one of the tables will have a one-to-many relationship to the other. 2. Moving columns from one table to another. 3. Deleting some cross reference tables that only cross referenced 1-to-1. Instead the reference will be a foreign key in one of the two tables. 4. Some new columns will be created with default values. 5. Some tables aren’t changing at all, but I have to copy them over due to the "put it all in a new DB" request.

  I'm having trouble with Microsoft Access 2003, it's complaining about this statement: select cardnr from change where year(date)<2009 group by cardnr having max(time+date) = (time+date) and cardto='VIP' What I want to do is, for every distinct cardnr in the table change, to find the row with the latest (time+date) that is before year 2009, and then just select the rows with cardto='VIP'. This validator says it's OK, Access says it's not OK. This is the message I get: "you tried to execute a query that does not include the specified expression 'max(time+date)=time+date and cardto='VIP' and cardnr=' as part of an aggregate function." Could someone please explain what I'm doing wrong and the right way to do it? Thanks

I have two tables (data, transaction) which I insert information into in a serializable transaction (either they are both in, or both out, but not in limbo). INSERT INTO reconciles (ReconcileID, DataID) SELECT Reconcile = @ReconcileID, ID FROM Data WHERE NOT EXISTS (SELECT 1 FROM TRANSACTIONS WHERE data.id = transactions.id) Note that the ID is actually a composite (2 column) key, so I can't use a NOT IN operator My understanding was that the second query would exclude any values written into data without their transaction as this insert was happening at serializable and the read was occurring at read committed. I have evidence that reconcile is picking up entries

I want the second number (123) to also be an int; I don't want to convert anything to a string. (And yes, really I should be working with strings. • LINQ to SQL filter combobox output

  OK so I've got 2 tables for this instance, Users{UserID, Name}, Company{CompanyID, UserID, Name, Payrate} i also have 2 combo boxes, first one is for Users which Displays Name, and the Value is UserID i need the second combobox to get the Names from the Company table, but only showing Companies that are relevant to the selected user. I cant work out how to get it to go... Any ideas???
