• iPhone SDK / Core Data usage scenario, similar to GAE data store?

  Hi all, I am currently rewriting a map based App which I wrote in the past, specifically for 2.2.1 devices. Originally I wrote it to make use of SQLite databases but I would like to try and migrate it over Core Data, now that it's available on 3.X (for which I am rewriting to). I am fairly experienced in iPhone/Obj-C development, SQL and server backend technologies, but I have never had the chance to work with Core Data so IDK really if it's the appropiate tool for what I am trying to accomplish. The App works on a limited area in a map over which there are about 4000 placemarks, with different kinds of icons and sizes. Of course not all 4000 placemarks are shown at once but only those currently visible in the map viewport, and depending on the zoom level. What I am doing right now is, after the user moves the map in any way (panning or zooming) I am requesting from the backend server the required information for the placemarks that would be visible given the viewport coordinates boundaries and zoom level, however the process isn't as smooth as I'd like (the backend is sending its response in XML and I am compressing it using gzip), it takes anywhere from 1 to 3 seconds to update the display of the placemarks after the user ends moving the map. What I would like to do is to prefetch all the placemarks data at the App launch and use it all through the app life time - I don't mind storing it for later use because the data should be dynamic. The way I would do it right now is, after retrieving all the data, to store it on an SQLite db which I would query later, whenever the user moves the map, to return only the placemarks inside the viewport coordinate boundaries and specific to a given zoom level. Now, the question itself is, if is it possible to use some more 'native', object driven way to carry this queries process, which got me thinking about Core Data and if it is in any way similar to what Google App Engine offers through its datastore where you can fetch a number of objects from the backend given a certain query or criteria, without resorting to an SQL query itself. Like I said before I don't have any experience on Core Data but I have a pretty deep understanding of Obj-C and iPhone development, as well as SQL databases. Any guides on how to achieve what I'm trying (if possible at all) would be greatly appreciated.

• Ubiquity CmdUtils.setSelection won't replace HTML

  I'm attempting to write a Ubiquity command that allows you to replace a selected link or URL pointing to an image with that image itself. However, the CmdUtils.setSelection() function (documented here) seems to do nothing if any html tags are present in the selection, making it useless for replacing any links. When selecting plain text, it functions exactly as intended, replacing the text with an <img src="text"/> tag. Is there something I'm missing, or will this function simply not allow me to replace html? If the latter is the case, is there a function or method that will allow me to do this? Any other advice is welcome as well! • Dynamic URL -> Controller mapping for routes in Rails

  I would like to be able to map URLs to Controllers dynamically based on information in my database. • Wanted: How to reliably, consistently select an MKMapView annotation

  After calling MKMapView's setCenterCoordinate:animated: method (without animation), I'd like to call selectAnnotation:animated: (with animation) so that the annotation pops out from the newly-centered pushpin. For now, I simply watch for mapViewDidFinishLoadingMap: and then select the annotation. However, this is problematic. For instance, this method isn't called when there's no need to load additional map data. In those cases, my annotation isn't selected. :( Very well. I could call this immediately after setting the center coordinate instead. Ahh, but in that case it's possible that there is map data to load (but it hasn't finished loading yet). I'd risk calling it too soon, with the animation becoming spotty at best. Thus, if I understand correctly, it's not a matter of knowing if my coordinate is visible, since it's possible to stray almost a screenful of distance and have to load new map data. Rather, it's a matter of knowing if new map data needs to be loaded, and then acting accordingly. Any ideas on how to accomplish this, or how to otherwise (reliably) select an annotation after re-centering the map view on the coordinate where that annotation lives? Clues appreciated - thanks!

• How to handle media kept on a separate server (PHP)

  So, I have three server, and the idea was to keep all media (images, files, movies) on a media server. I never got around to do it but I think I probably should. So these are the three servers: WWW server DB server Media server Visitors obviously connect to the WWW server and currently image resizing and cache:ing is done on the WWW servers as the original files are kept there. So the idea for me is for image functions I have, that does all the image compositioning, resizing and cahceing would just pie the command over to the media server that would return ther path to the finnished file. What I don't know is how to handle functions such as file_exists() and figuring out image dimensions when needed before even any image management comes into play. Do I pipe all these commands to the other server, via HTTP?   As EF 4.0 released, more support to SQL server Stored procedure. Complex Type can be generated automatically for result dataset of SP. But complex type not support by Ria Service. When I try to use ria service combined with EF 4.0, I want to get dataset by SP. This result is not mapped to any entity/table. Some sulutions suggested by community are: 1. Create view to map sp result. (but for EF, if there is no ID or primary, can't be map to any entity) 2. Create Entity to map sp result.(for this, you even need to map SP for CRUD even though I don't need CUD on this sp result) Also above solution can't be automated. As Database objects maybe changed with the time, auto update edm will lost above solution. So what's the solution? I want to put data operation back to DB as possible, so that many changes can be done in DB and no need to rebuild .net assemblies(this cause redeploy).

• Working with images (CGImage), exif data, and file icons

  What I am trying to do (under 10.6).... I have an image (jpeg) that includes an icon in the image file (that is you see an icon based on the image in the file, as opposed to a generic jpeg icon in file open dialogs in a program). I wish to edit the exif metadata, save it back to the image in a new file. Ideally I would like to save this back to an exact copy of the file (i.e. preserving any custom embedded icons created etc.), however, in my hands the icon is lost.   I'm trying to get will paginate to link to my nested route instead of the regular posts variable. I know I'm supposed to pass some params to paginate but I don't know how to pass them. Basically there is an array stored in @posts and the other param paginate has access to is category_id. • bug/error in basis set path algorithm i can't figure out

  The following looks through a 2d array to find basis set paths. It is supposed to print out the individual paths but not repeat any and end when all paths are found. It however doesn't stop at the last path and has a bug in it somewhere in which the following happens: It goes halfway through the path and then goes to zero and ends the path for some reason. For example the table is filled with the following: all 0s, except for [1][2], [1][3], [2][4], [2][5], [3][5], [4][6], [5][6], [6][0] which all have a 1 in them. The desired paths are P1: 1 2 4 6 0 P2: 1 3 5 6 0 P3: 1 2 5 6 0. The output I get when i run the program is 12460 13560 1250 124 Any and all help on this is much appreciated, this is just the function that scans through the array looking for paths, I can add the entire program if that would be helpful. • How does Hadoop perform input splits?

  Hi, This is a conceptual question involving Hadoop/HDFS. Lets say you have a file containing 1 billion lines. And for the sake of simplicity, lets consider that each line is of the form <k,v> where k is the offset of the line from the beginning and value is the content of the line. Now, when we say that we want to run N map tasks, does the framework split the input file into N splits and run each map task on that split? or do we have to write a partitioning function that does the N splits and run each map task on the split generated? All i want to know is, whether the splits are done internally or do we have to split the data manually? • Forwarding first responder to UIScrollView unsuccessful

  Hello, I am trying to create an image cropping bpx whereby the underlying image can be zoomed an scrolled while the cropping "maskview" layer stays the same and the corners can be dragged in any direction. To achieve this, the ImageView is added to a UIScrollView, and this is added to the SelectionViewController.view . I then add the cropping "maskview" layer to the SelectionViewController.view. I did this instead of adding to the scrollview so that the cropping maskview won't be expanded when the underlying image expands. @interface SelectionViewController : UIViewController <UIScrollViewDelegate> { UIImageView *photoview; // Added to self.scrollview MaskedView *maskedview; // Added to self.view UIScrollView *scrollview; // Added to self.view } The maskview has first responder status and responds accordingly. However, the only event I am interested in the maskview is if any of the corners are dragged (this works fine). The problem I want to try to solve is two-fold: If it is a pinch or zoom gesture, I am trying to forward the responder to the UIScrollview using: [self.nextResponder touchesMoved:touches withEvent:event]; The scrollview does not seem to respond. I have confirmed that the self.nextResponder after the maskedview is the SelectionViewController's view itself. From there, it doesn't seem like the UIScrollview responds. It does respond fine if I remove the cropping maskedview. If I zoom in on the underlying image and the cropping maskview rectangle is still the same, I want to now crop the actual zoomed image. Let's say for the upper left hand corner of the crop box, how can I find what the coordinates translates to in the underlying UIImageView now that the image has been zoomed? • Intersection of Inner Polygons of MKPolygon being colored - iOS

  I am trying to create a fog of war style map where areas I have visited are uncovered and the rest of the map is "hidden". I am using a MKPolygonOverlay that covers the whole map and create inner polygons around all the locations I have visited. However in areas where these inner polygons overlap, that portion of the overlay is still being drawn. • iPhone - UIViewController not rotating when device orientation changes

  I have got my own custom UIViewController, which contains a UIScrollView with an UIImageView as it's subview. I would like to make the image to auto rotate when device orientation changes, but it doesn't seem to be working... In the header file, I've got; @interface MyViewController : UIViewController <UIScrollViewDelegate> { IBOutlet UIScrollView *containerView; UIImageView *imageView; } These components are initialised in the loadView function as below; containerView = [[UIScrollView alloc] initWithFrame:frame]; NSData *data = [NSData dataWithContentsOfURL:[NSURL URLWithString:@"http://..."]]; UIImage *image = [[UIImage alloc] initWithData:data]; imageView = [[UIImageView alloc] initWithImage:image]; [image release]; [containerView addSubview:imageView]; And I have added the following method, assuming that's all I need to make the view auto-rotate... -(BOOL)shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)interfaceOrientation { return YES; } MyViewController loads fine with the image I've specified to grab from the URL, and the shouldAutorotate... function is being called, with the correct UIInterfaceOrientation, when I flip the device too. However, didRotateFromInterfaceOrientation method do not get called, and the image doesn't seem to rotate itself... Could someone please point out what I need to add, or what I have done wrong here? • dynamically drawing polylines on googlemaps using php/mysql

  Hi. I am new to the googlemaps API. I have written a small app for my mobile phone that periodically updates its location to an SQL databse. I would like to display this information on a googlemap in my browser. Ideally i'd like to then poll the database periodically and if any new co-ords have arrived, add them to the line. So, when I add 10000 elements to a map, and after that call map.clear(), it will keep 10000 nulls in it's internal array. So, my question is, how does JVM handle this array of nothing, and thus, is HashMap memory effective?

  In Ruby 1.9.1 strings are no longer enumerable and string.each is undefined. This causes a problem when parsing values for an array of generated checkboxes since the field value, when submitted, becomes an array of strings. For example: <% for map in Map.find(:all) %> <%= check_box_tag "listing[map_ids][]", map.id %> <%= map.title %> <% end %> This will result in an error, undefined method `each' for "1":String, in process_parameter_filter because map_ids is being passed as "map_ids"=["1","2"] (if checkboxes with values 1 and 2 have been checked that is). What is the recommended way to fix this?

• .net c# cannot find img resources when open with exe

  Hello, My exe processes text documents and I want to be able to right click on documents, select open with and point to my exe file. I can double click on my exe and choose a file to process with OpenFileDialog and it works fine. However, when I do open with, I get FileNotFound error. • loaded resources looks ugly

  I have the TreeView class using in my project. I use icons for it.First i load icons so: ImageList^ il = gcnew ImageList(); il->Images->Add(Image::FromFile("DISK.ico")); il->Images->Add(Image::FromFile("FILE.ico")); il->Images->Add(Image::FromFile("FOLDER.ico")); treeView1->ImageList = il; All was good. But i dont like that if i delete my icons from directory of project. there is error in my project. I decide to add icons in .resx file. Now icons loading look so: ImageList^ il = gcnew ImageList(); Resources::ResourceManager^ resourceManager = gcnew Resources::ResourceManager ("FilesSaver.Form1", GetType()->Assembly); Object^ disk = resourceManager->GetObject("DISK"); il->Images->Add(reinterpret_cast<Image^>(disk)); Object^ file = resourceManager->GetObject("FILE"); il->Images->Add(reinterpret_cast<Image^>(file)); Object^ folder = resourceManager->GetObject("FOLDER"); il->Images->Add(reinterpret_cast<Image^>(folder)); treeView1->ImageList = il; And why icons in the TreeView looks ugly (they look lighter and have a big black border). Why did this happen?

  EDIT: i just deleted the entire post and reformulated the question to be more generic. I want to do a simple strategy game: map, units. Map: one class. Units: another class, self drawn. Simple questions: How does an unit should redraw itself on the map. A unit should be a JPanel or similar Swing component (just to be able to manage them as an entity with its own mousehandlers) or can be another thing, without neglecting the fact that it should be an autonomous object with its own action handlers and fields. Is this map-units model correct of a simple game that would help me to learn in a fun way Java and OOP fundamentals. Thats it!

• Google Maps API - Get points along route between lat/long

  I have a web site that I am trying to get completed and I need to have the user click points on a map and then work out the route on the roads between the two points. So the user clicks the first point on 1st street, and then clicks another point on 4th street, and the map will find the best way to get there and plot the route on the map. I am assuming this can be done using directions and parse it up, but I have been searching for an hour now and can't find what I am looking for (maybe bad search terms). I need to be able to plot the map manually (?) so I can calculate the distance, etc... of the route as the user continues to click. The site that is in beta is http://www.RunMyRoute.com/UserRoutes/Create and you can see I am trying to create running routes. I want the user to have the option for the route to follow the roads versus just a straight line between two points on the map. Any help on this would be great! Simon.

  I have a Vehicle model: map.resources :vehicles, :has_many => :suppliers Everything works great, but Vehicle has a boolean attribute is_truck. I want to make an Alias so I can get the same resources but with the "truck" word, I tried with: map.trucks '/trucks', :controller => :vehicles, :action => :index, :is_truck => true map.trucks '/trucks/by_supplier/:supplier', :controller => :vehicles, :action => :index, :is_truck => true The first one works well, but when I search within a Form the second doesn't work and searches all suppliers. Is it possible to map.resources for an alias ?
