• One eye on my dinner and one eye on SQL server

  LiveJournal Tags: RedGate,Work Life Balance,Tips and Tricks,SQL Server This is somewhere between a Tweet and a proper blog article - would that be a Bleet? Anyway, I was at a local restaurant yesterday and after placing my order I was thinking about having to get home and log in to check some SQL Servers and then the thought came to me that as we were near civilisation there was likely to be a 3G signal that might actually make using the web browser on my phone bearable. It was surprisingly fast on my HTC Desire, it was almost as good as Wi-Fi. RedGate SQL Monitor works fine on the default HTC browser and here is the proof, me checking the servers while I am waiting for the meal to arrive. • New CAT5 cable run is unstable - bad jacks? Bad cable?

  This is a little project I'm doing at home. I wanted to wire two rooms together (basically, the router is one room, and the switch is in the second room). So I ran a CAT5 between the two rooms, and wired an RJ45 jack in each room. I then hooked up the two jacks with two CAT5 cable to run it through the cable tester, and all 8 wires seem good. Now, when I connect the switch and the router, the connection is unstable -- I ping the router and it barely holds on for two pings before it disconnects, and stays in that unstable state. Just to make sure the router and the switch are ok, I connected them with long wire between the two rooms and the connection is absolutely stable, and pings continuously. What could be the cause for the unstable connection? Especially that it pings a few times, so there IS a connection. But why is it unstable? And how come the cable tester says it's ok, but it's unstable?

  I have a VLC playlist (.xspf) of over a 100 songs all scattered all over my computer. I'm looking for a way to save this playlist and all it's songs to another folder - flash drive, external drive or just a different location in my computer. How can I do this? • ASA 5510 Need to filter traffic log events to my iPhone

  For some reason I cannot update apps or download apps to any ios devices on my network (tried both iphone and ipads). When I'm at home on my own network everything works fine. This started about a week ago. I've configured my iphone with a static IP address and even used 4.2.2.2 as my dns to rule out that the issue is with my DNS Server. I'm looking at the SYSLOG in ASDM (Cisco ASA 5510) but Im not sure it is providing me enough info. It seems to be showing ACL blocks on my public ip address, but not individual client IP's, so I can't see whats going on. How can I setup a way to filter any incoming/outgoing traffic to my iPhone's static IP and try and troubleshoot this?

• XFS and loss of data when power goes down

  Each time electricity goes down, my desktop (without UPS) loses some temporary information. Opera can lose settings, history, cache, or mail accounts (Thanks heavens I was wise to use IMAP). Partially or all together. a whole file (complete and save) in Geany appeared empty (and I didn't commit it to Git) rhythmbox lost all podcasts subscription data I'm afraid there are other losses I just didn't see. What's the reason? A memory files cache, a mem-disk? Or non-atomic file writes in xfs? I have Ubuntu 9.10 and XFS on both / and /home partitions. Is ext4 safer in such circumstances? I've seen ext3 is faster. Is it as safe as *4? Given that the apartment I rent is connected to a common bus and 1 safety switch for several apartments, and the neighbors - alone or together - overload it at least once every week, the lights go down often enough for this to be an issue.

• Bootstrap a debian build environment and build source packages with no root privileges

  On debian squeeze, I am trying to do the following : fetch sources package from the wheezy source repository bootstrap a squeeze chroot for several architectures build the packages for several architectures (i386, amd64 + all and any) I want both the fetching, bootstrapping and build operation to be scriptable, repeatable, and run as a normal user. For the environment setup, I want to make as little use of the root account as possible (install the necessary dependencies, and maybe some visudo stuff). If possible I would like to avoid using a VM (pbuilder with user mode linux) So far I have tried several things with pbuilder (require root), debootstrap (require root) with little success. • Default Window Size

  I'm running Vista Home Premium 32-Bit, though I doubt that matters, in this case. So, how do you set the default windows size? Is there a registry tweak for this? Going to Tools->Folder Options...->View Apply to Folders or Reset Folders doesn't work. So, whenever I open a new window to a random new folder I haven't opened before, I don't want it to take 75% of the screen. Is there any way I could make it open smaller?

• Clients not recognizing secondary LDAP groups?

  I'm having an issue where users who are members of secondary groups in LDAP are not being recognized as members of that group by the client. In this case, user jdoe is not being recognized as a member of the projects group. On the client, getent group shows: projects:*:20001:1001,1002,1003,1004,1005,1006 and getent passwd shows: jdoe:x:1003:10003:John Doe:/home/jdoe:/bin/bash But if I log in to the client as jdoe, and run id, I get: uid=1003(jdoe) gid=10003(jdoe) groups=24(cdrom),25(floppy),29(audio),44(video),46(plugdev),10003(jdoe) It recognizes jdoe's primary group, and the secondary groups that are appended by the client to all LDAP users, but the LDAP secondary groups are not in the list. We can see that jdoe's id is in the projects group, so why is the projects group not showing when jdoe runs the id command? The group objects are basic posixGroup entries, with a memberUid attribute for each of its members. We are using OpenLDAP on Ubuntu 10.04 server and clients.

• off-the-shelf HDD in Dell Optiplex 755 - Invalid Replacement - Press F1 when rebooting

  Hi, I recently put an SSD into my work Optiplex 755. Since then, every time the system boots or reboots, I get prompted to hit F1 to continue with a message like HDD replacement is not valid. The system works just fine. What I am gathering from Dell's website is that I left the original drive internally as a data drive. And apparently the Optiplex does not support 2 drives in the configuration we purchased originally and complains. Any suggestions on how to get rid of this message? some suggested the MEBx or whatever from Intel and to turn it off, but I did not succeed earlier. It's not a big deal 80% of the time, but I regularly work from home and occasionally need to fire a reboot and well, you don't get the BIOS screen remotely :) Regards, Eric.

• YouTube videos not working

  I have a problem with watching YouTube videos. It says: "An error occurred, please try again later". I've tried loading different videos and that's what it says to all the videos I try to watch. I've tried using another browser, clearing cache + cookies etc, but none of that really worked out. My operating system is Windows 7 Home Premium, I use Google Chrome as my browser. And the YouTube videos was able to be watched earlier. I suspect that it has something to do with the PC, since I've got YouTube working on my laptop earlier. Not sure if it still works on my laptop though. Hope I've given enough information for you to help me out with this problem. Feel free to ask if there's anything else you need to know. Hope you can/will help me out. :)

• De-index URL parameters by value

  Upon reading over this question is lengthy so allow me to provide a one sentence summary: I need to get Google to de-index URLs that have parameters with certain values appended I have a website example.com with language translations. There used to be many translations but I deleted them all so that only English (Default) and French options remain. When one selects a language option a parameter is aded to the URL. For example, the home page: https://example.com (default) https://example.com/main?l=fr_FR (French) I added a robots.txt to stop Google from crawling any of the language translations: # robots.txt generated at http://www.mcanerin.com User-agent: * Disallow: Disallow: /cgi-bin/ Disallow: /*?l= So any pages containing "?l=" should not be crawled. I checked in GWT using the robots testing tool. It works. But under html improvements the previously crawled language translation URLs remain indexed. The internet says to add a 404 to the header of the removed URLs so the Googles knows to de-index it. I checked to see what my CMS would throw up if I visited one of the URLs that should no longer exist. This URL was listed in GWT under duplicate title tags (One of the reasons I want to scrub up my URLS) https://example.com/reports/view/884?l=vi_VN&l=hy_AM This URL should not exist - I removed the language translations. The page loads when it should not! I played around. I typed example.com?whatever123 It seems that parameters always load as long as everything before the question mark is a real URL. So if Google has indexed all these URLS with parameters how do I remove them? I cannot check if a 404 is being generated because the page always loads because it's a parameter that needs to be de-indexed.

• Using VLANs that are routed together?

  I have a quick question that's bugging me the more I read about VLANs. So far I understand that they are useful for dividing the network into sub-sections, but if you route them together does that not remove any security benefit? As an example, if I created a VLAN on my home network which was simply one computer, one server and one router.if I wanted to divide the network between computers and servers I could put the computer on VLAN 10 and the server on VLAN 20. Then the computer would no longer be able to communicate with the server - unless I added a static route to the router that connected the two together, basically telling VLAN 10 that VLAN 20 exists and how to communicate with it. The VLANs would then be connected in a similar way to a 'flat' network that has no VLANs. Therefore, surely, all security benefits are lost. Am I missing something?

• GIMP Slow Startup

  Is there any way to speed up GIMP's startup time on Windows Vista Home Premium 32-Bit 1.6 [Dual] Intel Processors? On XP [different computer], it loads in less than 3 seconds. On Vista, it takes 20 seconds: 2 Seconds (other - fonts, brushes, etc) 18 Seconds (extension-script-fu) It just freezes at extension-script-fu. Looking at ProcessExplorer (or Task Manager, whatever), I see that it's not taking any CPU. EDIT: it does seem to be taking 50% of the CPU. It gets stuck for about 18 seconds, then starts working again, and the actual GIMP program pops up [...finally]. I have the latest stable version running (I think). I tried it with XP SP2 Compatibiliy mode and/or Run As Administrator, but that didn't help. EDIT: One way would be to disable script-fu. Does anyone know how to disable it at startup? (NOTE: Just wanted to point out that the title and the tags are the same. :D )

• Installing 64-bit Ubuntu alongside 32-bit Ubuntu?

  I have a 64-bit processor in my PC, but because of worries over application compatibility, up until now I have been using 32-bit Ubuntu (and 32-bit Vista because Dell wouldn't sell me 64-bit with my PC). Is it possible for me to install 64-bit Ubuntu alongside 32-bit ubuntu and 32-bit Windows Vista, so I can choose between them at boot and share data, and without uninstalling my 32-bit Ubuntu? My partitions are as follows Drive 1: 10 GB Vista recovery partition (E:), 240 GB Windows NTFS parition (230 GB used, C:). Drive 2: 167 GB Windows NTFS Partition (130 GB used, D: ), 8 GB swap partition, 13 GB / partition (6 GB used), 62 GB /home partition (20 GB used).

• windows 7 crash during hibernation

  At times, when I hibernate my Dell Latitude e6400 with Windows 7 (64 bit), the laptop screen goes black as it should, but then it takes several minutes before it powers down. Then, when I attempt to "resume," Windows boots up from a fresh startup, with all my work lost, and tells me that it's recovered from a serious error. What can I do to resolve this problem? Other background info: -I got a new hard drive with plenty of space about a year ago; I only use a small fraction of that space. This sometimes happens when I don't have any programs running at all. If it's relevant, I do have Dropbox and OneDrive running in the background, though. -The problem usually occurs when I hibernate just after I unplug from an external monitor to bring my laptop home, but I believe it happens at other times, too. • Move the Status Bar Web Address Display to the Address Bar

  Is the ability to see the addresses for weblinks the only reason that you keep the Status Bar visible? Now you can hide the Status Bar and move that address display to the Address Bar in Firefox. Before Here is the normal “Status Bar” address display for the weblink we were hovering the mouse over in our browser. That is nice but if you really prefer to keep the “Status Bar” hidden what do you do? Move that display to a better (and definitely more convenient) location. After Once you have the extension installed that is all there is to it…you are ready to go. Notice the address display in “Address Bar”. That is definitely looking nice. Just for fun we temporarily left the “Status Bar” visible as a demonstration while hovering over the link. And then with the “Status Bar” totally disabled…more screen real-estate is always a good thing. Note: The Status Address Bar extension does not show the original address behind shortened URLs. Conclusion If you are looking for an alternate way to see the address behind weblinks and acquire more screen real-estate, then the Status Bar extension will be a wonderful addition to your Firefox Browser. • How can I tell whether an interrupted rm -r removed any files?

  I installed sshfs a Linux box and then mounted my Mac home directory. In the middle of troubleshooting a configuration issue, I did an ls -l on the mount directory (as normal user), receiving: total 0 d????????? ? ? ? ? ? sl I then ran sudo rm -r on that directory but pressed Ctrl+C to terminate it immediately before it (looks) like the command did anything. I notice no files missing but I want to be sure - is there a way I can somehow inspect the filesystem log on my Mac to see if any files were actually removed?

  I am following this manual to install Arch Linux from within another Linux distro with the help of an Arch Linux live CD. Here is what I did: sudo mount -o loop Downloads/archlinux-2012.11.01-dual.iso arch_iso/ unsquashfs -d squashfs-root/ arch_iso/arch/x86_64/root-image.fs.sfs This results in a directory squashfs-root/ containing one file: root-image.fs I assume that this is not what I want. I want to see something that looks like a Linux root folder. If I follow these steps: "mount the file system" with mount -B /squashfs-root ${livecd_arch} and mount -t proc /proc ${livecd_arch}/proc, I get error messages like: mount: mount point /home/me/arch_root//proc does not exist What am I missing?   Hello, I have Centos 5 running Apache/2.2.3. Now the default folder is /var/www/html and whatever I put in it shows when I browse it from the web. Now I would like to to create a folder www under my user bob and have all files loaded from that folder; /home/bob/www When I change the document root folder in my httpd.config I get an 403 error, I have even tried with virtualhosts but the same error shows. Any ideas on what to do next?

  Hello, I bought my domain.tld and like to have it points toward my home server. I then created a zoneedit account and setted the zoneedit dns in my domain setting in my registrar web interface. I then installed ddclient on a machine behind my router, with the following conf: Configuration file for ddclient generated by debconf # /etc/ddclient.conf protocol=zoneedit1 use=if, if=eth0 server=www.zoneedit.com login=my_zoneedit_login password=my_zone_edit_password domain.tld When I open a browser and check http://domain.tld I have a site under contruction (from registrar dotsterparking).
