• Program error trying to generate Outlook 2013 email from Visual Basic 2010 [on hold]

  I am using vb to send emails through outlook. Currently we have a mix of outlook versions at our office: 2010 and 2013 with a mix of 32 bit and 64 bit (a mess, I know). I have referenced the version 15 dll for 2013 and it seems to be backward compatible, but when I try to use the above code for 2013 (it is 64 bit) it says it cannot start Microsoft Outlook. A program error has occured. This is happening on the application Dim statement line. I have tried googling around but there doesn't seem to be much out there referencing 2013 but I feel that the problem here probably has more to do with 64 bit than the software version. • How to implement lockstep model for RTS game?

  In my effort to learn programming I'm trying to make a small RTS style game. I've googled and read a lot of articles and gamedev q&a's on the topic of lockstep synchronization in multiplayer RTS games, but am still having trouble wrapping my head around how to implement it in my own game. I currently have a simple server/client system. For example if player1 selects a unit and gives the command to move it, the client sends the command [move, unit, coordinates] to the server, the server runs the pathfinding function and sends [move, unit, path] to all clients which then moves the unit and run animations. So far so good, but not synchronized for clients with latency or lower/higher FPS. How can I turn this into a true lockstep system? Is the right methodology supposed to be something like the following, using the example from above: Turn 1 start gather command inputs from player1 send to the server turn number and commands end turn, increment turn number The server receives the commands, runs pathfinding and sends the paths to all clients. Next turn receive paths from server, as well as confirmation that all clients completed previous turn, otherwise pause and wait for that confirmation move units gather new inputs end turn Is that the gist of it? Should perhaps pathfinding and other game logic be done client side instead of on the server, if so why? Is there anything else I'm missing? I hope someone can break down the concept, so I understand it better.

• Getting codebaseHQ SVN ChangeLog data in your application

  I deploy apps via ClickOnce. After each deployment we have to review the changes made and send out an email to the users with the changes. What I decided now to do is to use CodebaseHQ’s API to access a project’s SVN repository and display the commit notes so some users who download new updates can check what was changed or updated in an app. This saves a heck of a lot of time, especially when your apps are in beta and you are making several changes daily based on feedback. • game multiplayer service development

  I'm currently working on a multiplayer game. I've looked at a number of multiplayer services(player.io, playphone, gamespy, and others) but nothing really hits the mark. They are missing features, lack platform support or cost too much. What I'm looking for is a simple poor man's version of steam or xbox live. Not the game marketplace side of those two but the multiplayer services. User accounts, profiles, presence info, friends, game stats, invites, on/offline messaging. Basically I'm looking for a unified multiplayer platform for all my games across devices. Since I can't find what I'm planning to roll my own piece by piece. I plan to save on server resources by making most of the communication p2p. Things like game data and voice chat can be handled between peers and the server keeps track of user presence and only send updates when needed or requested. I know this runs the risk of cheating but that isn't a concern right now. I plan to run this on a Amazon ec2 micro server for development then move to a small to large instance when finished. I figure user accounts would be the simplest to start with. Users can create accounts online or using in game dialog, login/out, change profile info. The user can access this info online or in game. I will need user authentication and secure communication between server and client. I figure all info will be stored in a database but I dont know how it can be stored securely and accessed from webserver and game services. I would appreciate and links to tutorials, info or advice anyone could provide to get me started. Any programming language is fine but I plan to use c# on the server and c/c++ on devices. I would like to get started right away but I'm in no hurry to get it finished just yet. If you know of a service that already fits my requirements please let me know.

• Email provider - suggestions needed

  We are looking for a good way to have email support. In theory, we need to allow end-users to send emails directly to support and careers. i.e. support@domain_name_here.com and careers@domain_name_here.com. Second, we need to provide emails to our staff. So each staff member has their own email address. i.e. joe@domain_name_here.com, meghan@domain_name_here.com, etc. Google Apps is one that we are considering. However, they are charging $50 per user, per year. Not so bad, considering the quality and the features they offer. However, there are also cheaper alternatives. i.e. my domain registrar offers an email plan for $20 / year / 10 emails. Go Daddy has a number of plans and still a lot more affordable than Google Apps. So far Namecheap and Go Daddy are the only ones I have looked at for email plans. Is it worth signing up with Google Apps? Or are there better alternatives? Your thoughts?

• Iphone/Android app – chatroom development – what framework & hosting needs?

  I have some experience regarding IPhone and Android development but I am now struggling to solve a new class of problem: apps that involve a client/server chatroom feature. That is, an app when people can exchange text over the internet, and without having the app to constantly “pull” content from the server. So that problem can’t be solved with a normal php/mysql website, there must be some kind of application running on a server that is able to send message from the server to the phone, rather than having the phone to check for new messages every 10 seconds… So I’m looking for ways to solve the different problems here: What framework should I use on the two sides (phone / server)? It should be some kind of library that doesn’t prevent me to write paid apps. It should also be possible to have the same server for the Iphone and android version of the app. What server / hosting solution do I need with what sort of features, I just have no experience regarding server application that can handle and initiate multiple connections and are hosted on hardware that is always online I tried to find resources online but couldn’t so far, either the libraries had the wrong kind of license/language or I just didn’t understand… Sometimes there were nice tutorial but for different needs such as peer2peer chat over local network… Same with the server and the hosting problem, not sure where to start really, I’m calling for help and I promise I will complete this page with notes about the experience I will get :-) Obviously the ideal would be to find a tutorial I missed that include client code, server code and a free scalable server… That being said, If I see something as good, it probably means that I have eaten the wrong kind of mushroom again… So, failing that, any pointer which might help me toward that quest, would be greatly appreciated. • Error with APE Server Installation

  I was trying to install APE-Server from the .deb file at the ape-server homepage (www.ape-project.org) and I ran into an error so wanted to try removing the installation and reinstalling. I did a sudo apt-get remove ape-server which ran successfully but left ape-server folders in my /etc/ and /etc/init.d locations. Me being an idiot new comer to linux decided that manually delete those folders. Now when I reinstall the ape-server those folders don't get recreated and therefore I cannot send the /etc/init.d/ape-server [option] command because the folder is not found. When I try to sudo apt-get purge (or remove) ape-server I get the following sudo apt-get purge ape-server Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done The following packages will be REMOVED: ape-server* 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 92 not upgraded. 1 not fully installed or removed. • Crafty.js multiplayer platform game, keeping players in sync

  I'm using crafty.js to create a very simple platform game. It doesn't need to stop cheating, it's actually just seeing other players move around, and it doesn't need to have collision detection between players. They are "shadows". How I've gone about it so far is to use http://pubnub.com to send messages between clients. These messages are simple. The first if a new player arrival, the second is a key down and the third is a key up. The code is here: https://github.com/whiteoctober/craftyconcept However I've hit against the old chestnut of keeping everything in sync. At the moment I'm letting the each of the clients decide where to place the other players based on the received key events, I also only move "you" until I get a key press event back from pubsub. My thinking here is to try and keep things in sync! However it isn't perfect, http://www.whiteoctober.co.uk/john/gametest/, things can get out of sync very easily. Key presses arrive in the wrong order etc. Is there any simple solutions to this, I would like to keep it all client side (with pubnub) and not have a central server with positions etc if possible.

• How do I get a rt2800usb wireless device working?

  My brand new desktop running 13.04 has endless problems with wireless. Dozens of others are flooding forums with reports of the same problems. It worked fine for a few days, then there were a few days where it started having problems sometimes and working sometimes. Now it never works at all. I have 5+ devices all able to connect without any trouble at all, including iPhone, Android phone, 3DS, multiple game consoles, a laptop running windows 7, and even a second desktop machine running Ubuntu 12.04 sitting right behind the 13.04 machine. All other devices have full wireless bars displayed (strong signals). At any moment, one of the following is happening, and it changes randomly: Trying to connect forever, but never establishing a connection. Wireless icon constantly animating. Finds no wireless networks at all. (There are 12+ in range according to other devices.) Will not try to connect to the network. If I use the icon to connect, it will display "Disconnected" within a few seconds. Will continuously ask for the network password. Typing it in correctly does not help. Wireless is working fine. This happens sometimes. It can work for days at a time, or only 10 mins at a time. Various things that usually do nothing but sometimes fix the problem: Reboot. This has the best chance of helping, but it usually takes 5+ times. Disable/re-enable Wi-Fi using the wireless icon. Disable/re-enable Networking using the wireless icon. Use the icon to try and connect to a network (if found). Use the icon to open Edit Connections and delete my connection info, causing it to be recreated (once it's actually found again). Various things that seem to make no difference: Changing between using Linux headers in grub at bootup, between 3.10.0, 3.9.0, or 3.8.0. Move the wireless router very close to the desktop. Running sudo rfkill unblock all (I dunno what this is supposed to do.) I've used Ubuntu for 6 years and I've never had a problem with networking. Now I'm spending all my time reading through endless problem reports and trying all the answers. None of them have helped. I am doing this instead of getting work done, which is defeating the whole purpose of using Ubuntu. It's heartbreaking to be honest. It said to install gksu. I tried that, but of course, not having Internet, I didn't get the package. So instead I did: sudo gedit /etc/pm/power.d/wireless Which created the file. Here is the body: #!/bin/sh /sbin/iwconfig wlan0 power off I then rebooted. No change. I tried adding exit 0 to the bottom of the wireless file, and rebooted. No change. Please note that this is a desktop machine. I'm assuming power management is primarily for laptops, but the iwconfig does state that power management is on, so who knows. The recommended router changes I did not do, since the current router settings are (I think) required for some of the older devices I have, and because the current settings work on all my modern devices including Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 7. I do appreciate the advice though, and I'll look into it when I have time. Anything else to try? Update #2 I booted into Ubuntu 12.04.3 from a dvd, and the same problems exist. I have a separate old desktop machine with 12.04 installed that has no wireless problems at all. So obviously the problem is wireless hardware compatibility in both 12.04.03 LTS and 13.04. Update #3 The same problems exist even when using a wired connection. I plugged an ethernet cable directly to the router and the network manager added an "Auto Ethernet" entry, but it cannot establish a connection to it. So the problem is not specific to wireless. Meanwhile, I purchased a Trendnet N300 wireless USB adapter, TEW-664UB. I plugged it in, but I have no idea how to get Ubuntu to try and use it. Can anyone tell me how? Can I download a package on another computer and copy the .deb over to do an install, etc? I'm installing windows 7 to double check that the internet connection works there and it's not just some magically faulty hardware. Thanks for your help.

• What stands out on a Juniors CV

  Hi all, I am looking for advice, hopefully from people more experienced that me. I am going to start applying for junior positions for .net development in the summer. At the moment the only thing on my CV is a project I have done for Windows Phone 7 called sprout sms. It allows the user to send webtext as provided by Irish Operators. The app is doing well and is top ten in my local marketplace (Ireland). By trade I am a salesman and that is the extent of most of my employment. I haven't been to college and due to financial commitments I would not be able to go down the road of full time education. I have kept up to date with various .net related tech in a junior capacity and am looking to now change careers. What I am look to see is what stands out on a juniors CV. My lack of education stands against me so I am looking to offset this with practical experience. I am open to all suggestions and from the end of this month I am free to pursue "notches" which will make my CV stand out. So in short if you where hiring a Junior, what would you like to see that would make you take a second look or request an interview? NOTE: I do fear this is a subjective subject, rather than debate what is the best items to have on a Juniors CV I would like to concentrate on what info you would give to a junior who is looking to apply for a job this year.   Today I investigated one strange error working with Dynamic SMTP Port.   Event Type: Error Event Source: BizTalk Server 2006 Event Category: BizTalk Server 2006 Event ID: 5754 Date: ******** Time: ********AM User: N/A Computer: ******** Description: A message sent to adapter "SMTP" on send port "*********" with URI "mailto:********.com" is suspended. Error details: Unknown Error Description  MessageId:  {********} InstanceID: {********}   My code was pretty simple and the source of the error was hidden somewhere inside it.   msg_MyMessage(SMTP.CC) = var_CC; msg_MyMessage(SMTP.From) = var_From; msg_MyMessage(SMTP.Subject) = var_Subject; msg_MyMessage(SMTP.EmailBodyText) = var_Message;    // #1    msg_MyMessage(SMTP.SMTPHost) = " localhost "; msg_MyMessage(SMTP.SMTPAuthenticate) = 0; When I added line #2, this frustrating error disappeared.    msg_MyMessage(SMTP.EmailBodyTextCharset) = "UTF-8"; // #2 Conclusion: If we use the SMTP.EmailBodyText property, we must set up the SMTP.EmailBodyTextCharset property. To me it looks like a bug in BizTalk. [Maybe it is "by design", but in this case give us a useful error text!!!] And don't ask me how much time I've spent with this investigation.

• cannot get upstart to run user job

  I am trying to get upstart start a user job during the boot of my machine. I have my conky.conf upstart config file in my $HOME/.init directory. Wenn I run "start conky" I get this error: dre@dre-laptop:~$ start conky start: Rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type="method_call", sender=":1.76" (uid=1000 pid=2843 comm="start conky ") interface="com.ubuntu.Upstart0_6.Job" member="Start" error name="(unset)" requested_reply="0" destination="com.ubuntu.Upstart" (uid=0 pid=1 comm="/sbin/init") dre@dre-laptop:~$ I (think I) know that this error has to do with the d-bus system (authentification). I also read (http://upstart.ubuntu.com/cookbook/#id96) that ubuntu 12.10 already has the right configuration in the d-bus config file "/etc/dbus-1/system.d/Upstart.conf" to allow normal users to use upstart. dre@dre-laptop:~/.init$ cat conky.conf description "conky, a system monitor appled" start on lightdm stop on shutdown # Automatically restart process if crashed respawn # Essentially lets upstart know the process will detach itself to the background #expect fork # Start conky exec /usr/bin/conky So, who knows, what do I do wrong??? greetings Andre No one??? • Refactoring this code that produces a reverse-lookup hash from another hash

  This code is based on the idea of a Form Object http://blog.codeclimate.com/blog/2012/10/17/7-ways-to-decompose-fat-activerecord-models/ (see #3 if unfamiliar with the concept). My actual code in question may be found here: https://gist.github.com/frankjmattia/82a9945f30bde29eba88 The code takes a hash of objects/attributes and creates a reverse lookup hash to keep track of their delegations to do this. delegate :first_name, :email, to: :user, prefix: true But I am manually creating the delegations from a hash like this: DELEGATIONS = { user: [ :first_name, :email ] } At runtime when I want to look up the translated attribute names for the objects, all I have to go on are the delegated/prefixed (have to use a prefix to avoid naming collisions) attribute names like :user_first_name which aren't in sync with the rails i18n way of doing it: en: activerecord: attributes: user: email: 'Email Address' The code I have take the above delegations hash and turns it into a lookup table so when I override human_attribute_name I can get back the original attribute name and its class. Then I send #human_attribute_name to the original class with the original attribute name as its argument. The code I've come up with works but it is ugly to say the least. I've never really used #inject so this was a crash course for me and am quite unsure if this code effective way of solving my problem. Could someone recommend a simpler solution that does not require a reverse lookup table or does that seem like the right way to go? Thanks, - FJM
