  • Delphi Volume control by keyboard

    - by user568160
    Hi All, I recently had to replace a keyboard and this one ( GE 98552 ) does not have programmable buttons along the top and I miss the up/down volume buttons. it has 9 special buttons but none for volume and this model is not programmable. DUH! I am a long-time Delphi programmer but never messed with the multimedia stuff. Can anyone suggest some code to assign to say the "+" and "-" keys on the numeric pad that will change the volume up and down? I never use those two buttons so I would not be giving up functionality. Thanks Frank

  • flash blocking javascript events

    - by jedierikb
    this is an edit of the original post now that I better understand the problem. now with source code! In IE, if body (or another html div has focus), then you keypress & click on flash at the same time, then release... a keyup event is never fired. It is not fired in javascript or in flash. Where is this keyup event? This is the order of event firing you get instead: javascriptKeyEvent:bodyDn ** currentFocuedElement: body javascriptKeyEvent:docDn ** currentFocuedElement: body actionScriptEvent::activate ** currentFocuedElement: [object] actionScriptEvent::mouseDown ** currentFocuedElement: [object] actionScriptEvent::mouseUp ** currentFocuedElement: [object] Subsequent keyup and keydown events are captured by flash, but that initial keyUp is never fired.. anywhere. And I need that keyup! Here is the html/javascript: <html> <head> <script type="text/javascript" src="p.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="swfobject.js"></script> <script> function ic( evt ) { Event.observe( $("f1"), 'keyup', onKeyHandler.bindAsEventListener( this, "f1Up" ) ); Event.observe( $("f2"), 'keyup', onKeyHandler.bindAsEventListener( this, "f2Up" ) ); Event.observe( document, 'keyup', onKeyHandler.bindAsEventListener( this, "docUp" ) ); Event.observe( $("body"), 'keyup', onKeyHandler.bindAsEventListener( this, "bodyUp" ) ); Event.observe( window, 'keyup', onKeyHandler.bindAsEventListener( this, "windowUp" ) ); Event.observe( $("f1"), 'keydown', onKeyHandler.bindAsEventListener( this, "f1Dn" ) ); Event.observe( $("f2"), 'keydown', onKeyHandler.bindAsEventListener( this, "f2Dn" ) ); Event.observe( document, 'keydown', onKeyHandler.bindAsEventListener( this, "docDn" ) ); Event.observe( $("body"), 'keydown', onKeyHandler.bindAsEventListener( this, "bodyDn" ) ); Event.observe( window, 'keydown', onKeyHandler.bindAsEventListener( this, "windowDn" ) ); Event.observe( "clr", "mousedown", clearHandler.bindAsEventListener( this ) ); swfobject.embedSWF( "tmp.swf", "f2", "100%", "20px", "9.0.0.0", null, {}, {}, {} ); } function clearHandler( evt ) { clear( ); } function clear( ) { $("log").innerHTML = ""; } function onKeyHandler( evt, dn ) { logIt( "javascriptKeyEvent:"+dn ); } function AS2JS( wha ) { logIt( "actionScriptEvent::" + wha ); } function logIt( k ) { var id = document.activeElement; if (id.identify) { id = id.identify(); } $("log").innerHTML = k + " ** focuedElement: " + id + "<br>" + $("log").innerHTML; } Event.observe( window, 'load', ic.bindAsEventListener(this) ); </script> </head> <body id="body"> <div id="f1"><div id="f2" style="width:100%;height:20px; position:absolute; bottom:0px;"></div></div> <div id="clr" style="color:blue;">clear</div> <div id="log" style="overflow:auto;height:200px;width:500px;"></div> </body> </html> Here is the as3 code: package { import flash.display.Sprite; import flash.display.StageAlign; import flash.display.StageScaleMode; import flash.events.KeyboardEvent; import flash.events.MouseEvent; import flash.events.Event; import flash.external.ExternalInterface; public class tmpa extends Sprite { public function tmpa( ):void { extInt("flashInit"); stage.align = StageAlign.TOP_LEFT; stage.scaleMode = StageScaleMode.NO_SCALE; stage.addEventListener( KeyboardEvent.KEY_DOWN, keyDnCb, false, 0, true ); stage.addEventListener( KeyboardEvent.KEY_UP, keyUpCb, false, 0, true ); stage.addEventListener( MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, mDownCb, false, 0, true ); stage.addEventListener( MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP, mUpCb, false, 0, true ); addEventListener( Event.ACTIVATE, activateCb, false, 0, true ); addEventListener( Event.DEACTIVATE, dectivateCb, false, 0, true ); } private function activateCb( evt:Event ):void { extInt("activate"); } private function dectivateCb( evt:Event ):void { extInt("deactivate"); } private function mDownCb( evt:MouseEvent ):void { extInt("mouseDown"); } private function mUpCb( evt:MouseEvent ):void { extInt("mouseUp"); } private function keyDnCb( evt:KeyboardEvent ):void { extInt( "keyDn" ); } private function keyUpCb( evt:KeyboardEvent ):void { extInt( "keyUp" ); } private function extInt( wha:String ):void { try { ExternalInterface.call( "AS2JS", wha ); } catch (ex:Error) { trace('ex: ' + ex); } } } }

  • Ubuntu 10.04 not detecting multiple monitors

    - by user28837
    I have 2 graphics cards, the output from the lspci: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV770 [Radeon HD 4850] 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV710 [Radeon HD 4350] I have one monitor connected to the 4850 and 2 connected to the 4350. However when I go into System Preferences Monitors the only monitor shown is the one connected to the 4850. Is there something I need to enable for it to be able to use the other card? How do I get this to work. Thanks. • Intercept and ignore keyboard event in Windows 7 32bit

    - by Sg2010
    Hi all, My hardware has a problem, from time to time it's sending a "keydown" followed by a "keyup" of event: keydown: None LButton, OemClear 255 keyup: None LButton, OemClear 255 keydown: None LButton, OemClear 255 keyup: None LButton, OemClear 255 It goes like this forever, in Windows. In general it doesn't affect most of the applications, because this key is not printable. I think it's a special function key, like a media key or something. It doesn't do anything. But, in some applications that LISTEN to keydown and keyup, I get undesire and unexpected behaviour. Is there a way to intercept these 2 events in Windows (for all applications, for Windows itself) and make the OS ignore them? This is really important to me, if you can think of any solution, I'd be forever thankful.

  • How to differentiate between scrollbar click events and scrollbar drag events?

    - by Sameer
    I need to scroll an EXT-GWT grid by some custom amount instead of the default 1-2 rows. Since I couldn't find any parameter that let me do this, I overrode the event handler to capture scroll or mousewheel events. On any such event, I just programmatically move the scroller further by the required amount in the same direction, keeping a flag to ensure that it doesn't go into an infinite loop. However, this technique fails when the user scrolls the grid with the scroller. Specifically, when I drag the scroller from some position to the top of the scroll track, the rows displayed in the grid are not the topmost rows in the grid but some rows further down. I figured that if I could differentiate between the events generated by the scroll-up and scroll-down buttons and those generated by scroller drag, I could handle them separately and rectify the issue. Any way this could be done? Or is there a way to specify the amount by which a scrollbar should scroll in one step? Thanks -Sameer

  • Attaching events in JavaScript

    - by R0MANARMY
    As comment to one of the questions here a commenter wrote (emphasis mine): ... By using an inline "onclick" you are doing a similar thing, but it is harder to maintain and more prone to issues. The JavaScript community as a whole has been moving away from inline JavaScript for a while now. This was referring to attaching events to HTML elements using $("#someID").click(function(){ do something here...; }); rather than <a id="someID" onclick="someFunction();"> Has there really been a shift away from the old school way of declaring events inline, and if so, what are the benefits of one of the other?

  • How events are assigned in .NET

    - by Matt
    I just realized I didn't fully understand why in .NET you assign events using a += symbol. I figured this out yesterday when I needed to remove an event and without thinking I was doing someobject.onsomeevent += null thinking that would just remove the event I had previously assigned. After some investigation, I figured out I had to someobject.onsomeevent -= someeventmethod; After figuring this out, I realized I don't understand how event methods are assigned in .NET. So I have a few questions: First, does it mean that I can do someobject.onsomeevent += someeventmethod; someobject.onsomeevent += someeventothermethod; If so, when onsomeevent occurs will they both get hit, and in the order specified or simultaneously? Furthermore, how can I determine what event methods are already assigned to someobject.onsomeevent? Second, is there a way to save the events methods in some class, remove them from someobject.onsomeevent and re-assign them after some other procedures that would normally trigger the event are complete?

  • WPF - Handling events from user control in View Model

    - by Vitaly
    I’m building a WPF application using MVVM pattern (both are new technologies for me). I use user controls for simple bits of reusable functionality that doesn’t contain business logic, and MVVM pattern to build application logic. Suppose a view contains my user control that fires events, and I want to add an event handler to that event. That event handler should be in the view model of the view, because it contains business logic. The question is – view and the view model are connected only by binding; how do I connect an event handler using binding? Is it even possible (I suspect not)? If not – how should I handle events from a control in the view model? Maybe I should use commands or INotifyPropertyChanged?

  • Cleanly handling events

    - by nkr1pt
    I have code similar to this in all my observer classes that handle events fired by an event bus class. As you can see there are a lot of instanceof checks to choose the path of action needed to appropriately handle events, and I was wondering if this could be done more cleanly, eliminating the instanceof tests? @Override public void handleEvent(Event event) { if (event instanceof DownloadStartedEvent) { DownloadStartedEvent dsEvent = (DownloadStartedEvent)event; dsEvent.getDownloadCandidateItem().setState(new BusyDownloadingState()); } else if (event instanceof DownloadCompletedEvent) { DownloadCompletedEvent dcEvent = (DownloadCompletedEvent)event; dcEvent.getDownloadCandidateItem().setState(new FinishedDownloadingState()); DownloadCandidate downloadCandidate = dcEvent.getDownloadCandidateItem(). getDownloadCandidate(); if (downloadCandidate.isComplete()) { // start extracting } } else if (event instanceof DownloadFailedEvent) { DownloadFailedEvent dfEvent = (DownloadFailedEvent)event; dfEvent.getDownloadCandidateItem().setState(new FailedDownloadingState()); } }

  • Events in Classes (VB.NET)

    - by Otaku
    I find that I write a lot of code within my classes to keep properties in sync with each other. I've read about Events in Classes, but have not been able to wrap my head around how to make them work for what I'm looking for. I could use some advice here. For example, in this one I always want to keep myColor up to date with any change whatsoever in any or all of the Red, Green or Blue properties. Class myColors Private Property Red As Byte Private Property Green As Byte Private Property Blue As Byte Private Property myColor As Color Sub New() myColor = Color.FromArgb(0, 0, 0) End Sub Sub ChangeRed(ByVal r As Byte) Red = r myColor = Color.FromArgb(Red, Green, Blue) End Sub Sub ChangeBlue(ByVal b As Byte) Blue = b myColor = Color.FromArgb(Red, Green, Blue) End Sub End Class If one or more of those changes, I want myColor to be updated. Easy enough as above, but is there a way to work with events that would automatically do this so I don't have to put myColor = Color.FromArgb(Red, Green, Blue) in every sub routine?

  • Is it possible to do live events in YUI, similar to jQuery's live events?

    - by eculver
    It doesn't currently seem as though there is a way to do live events in YUI similar to jQuery: http://api.jquery.com/live/ It sure would be nice if something like: function handleClick(e) { // click! } YUI().use('node-base', function(Y) { Y.on("click", handleClick, ".foo"); }); caused handleClick to be fired when a node with the "foo" class was clicked on after being dynamically added to the DOM and sometime after the Y.on was evaluated. I feel like live events are one of jQuery's killer features that YUI lacks.

  • Wordpress Events List Date Problem

    - by Roger
    Hi, I'm having a problem displaying events in the correct order in wordpress. I think the problem is because wordpress is treating the date as a string and ordering it by the day because it's in british date format. The goal is to display a list of future events with the most current event at the top of the list. But I must use the british date format of dd/mm/yyyy. Do I need to go back to the drawing board or is there a way of converting the date to achieve the result I need? Thanks in advance :) <ul> <?php // Get today's date in the right format $todaysDate = date('d/m/Y');?> <?php query_posts('showposts=50&category_name=Training&meta_key=date&meta_compare=>=&meta_value=' . $todaysDate . '&orderby=meta_value&order=ASC'); ?> <?php if (have_posts()) : while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?> <li> <h3><a href="<?php the_permalink(); ?>"> <?php the_title(); ?> </a></h3> <?php $getDate = get_post_meta($post->ID, 'date', TRUE); $dateArray = explode('/', $getDate); ?> <?php if($getDate != '') { ?> <div class="coursedate rounded"><?php echo date('d F Y', mktime(0, 0, 0, $dateArray[1], $dateArray[0], $dateArray[2])); ?></div> <?php } ?> <p><?php get_clean_excerpt(140, get_the_content()); ?>...</p> <p><strong><a class="link" href="<?php the_permalink(); ?>">For further details and booking click here</a></strong></p> </li> <?php endwhile; ?> <?php else : ?> <li>Sorry, no upcoming events!</li> <?php endif; ?>

  • Events not registering after replaceWith

    - by strager
    When I replaceWith an element to bring one out of the DOM, then replaceWith it back in, events registered to it do not fire. I need to events to remain intact. Here's my Javascript: var replacement = $(document.createElement('span')); var original = $(this).replaceWith(replacement); replacement .css('background-color', 'green') .text('replacement for ' + $(this).text()) .click(function() { replacement.replaceWith(original); }); Live demo In the demo, when you click an element, it is replaced with another element using replaceWith. When you click the new element, that is replaced with the original element using replaceWith. However, the click handler does not work any more (where I would think it should).

  • running code when two events have triggered

    - by Evert
    This is mostly a language-agnostic question. If I'm waiting for two events to complete (say, two IO events or http requests), what is the best pattern to deal with this. One thing I can think of is the following (pseudo js example). request1.onComplete = function() { req1Completed = true; eventsCompleted(); } request2.onComplete = function() { req2Completed = true; eventsCompleted(); } eventsCompleted = function() { if (!req1Completed || !req2Completed) return; // do stuff } Is this the most effective pattern, or are there more elegant ways to solve this issue?

  • Introduction to Extended Events

    - by extended_events
    For those fighting with all the Extended Event terminology, let's step back and have a small overall Introduction to Extended Events. This post will give you a simplified end to end view through some of the elements in Extended Events. Before we start, let’s review the first Extented Events that we are going to use: -          Events: The SQL Server code is populated with event calls that, by default, are disabled. Adding events to a session enables those event calls. Once enabled, they will execute the set of functionality defined by the session. -          Target: This is an Extended Event Object that can be used to log event information. Also it is important to understand the following Extended Event concept: -          Session: Server Object created by the user that defines functionality to be executed every time a set of events happen.   It’s time to write a small “Hello World” using Extended Events. This will help understand the above terms. We will use: -          Event sqlserver. error_reported: This event gets fired every time that an error happens in the server. -          Target package0.asynchronous_file_target: This target stores the event data in disk. -          Session: We will create a session that sends all the error_reported events to the ring buffer. Before we get started, a quick note: Don’t run this script in a production environment. Even though, we are going just going to be raise very low severity user errors, we don't want to introduce noise in our servers. -- TRIES TO ELIMINATE PREVIOUS SESSIONS BEGIN TRY       DROP EVENT SESSION test_session ON SERVER END TRY BEGIN CATCH END CATCH GO   -- CREATES THE SESSION CREATE EVENT SESSION test_session ON SERVER ADD EVENT sqlserver.error_reported ADD TARGET package0.asynchronous_file_target -- CONFIGURES THE FILE TARGET (set filename = 'c:\temp\data1.xel' , metadatafile = 'c:\temp\data1.xem') GO   -- STARTS THE SESSION ALTER EVENT SESSION test_session ON SERVER STATE = START GO   -- GENERATES AN ERROR RAISERROR (N'HELLO WORLD', -- Message text.            1, -- Severity,            1, 7, 3, N'abcde'); -- Other parameters GO   -- STOPS LISTENING FOR THE EVENT ALTER EVENT SESSION test_session ON SERVER STATE = STOP GO   -- REMOVES THE EVENT SESSION FROM THE SERVER DROP EVENT SESSION test_session ON SERVER GO -- REMOVES THE EVENT SESSION FROM THE SERVER select CAST(event_data as XML) as event_data from sys.fn_xe_file_target_read_file ('c:\temp\data1*.xel','c:\temp\data1*.xem', null, null) This query will output the event data with our first hello world in the Extended Event format: <event name="error_reported" package="sqlserver" id="100" version="1" timestamp="2010-02-27T03:08:04.210Z"><data name="error"><value>50000</value><text /></data><data name="severity"><value>1</value><text /></data><data name="state"><value>1</value><text /></data><data name="user_defined"><value>true</value><text /></data><data name="message"><value>HELLO WORLD</value><text /></data></event> More on parsing event data in this post: Reading event data 101 Now let's move that lets move on to the other three Extended Event objects: -          Actions. This Extended Objects actions get executed before events are published (stored in buffers to be transferred to the targets). Currently they are used additional data (like the TSQL Statement related to an event, the session, the user) or generate a mini dump.   -          Predicates: Predicates express are logical expressions that specify what predicates to fire (E.g. only listen to errors with a severity greater than 16). This are composed of two Extended Objects: o   Predicate comparators: Defines an operator for a pair of values. Examples: §  Severity > 16 §  error_message = ‘Hello World!!’ o   Predicate sources: These are values that can be also used by the predicates. They are generic data that isn’t usually provided in the event (similar to the actions). §  Sqlserver.username = ‘Tintin’ As logical expressions they can be combined using logical operators (and, or, not).  Note: This pair always has to be first an event field or predicate source and then a value         Let’s do another small Example. We will trigger errors but we will use the ones that have severity >= 10 and the error message != ‘filter’. To verify this we will use the action sql_text that will attach the sql statement to the event data: -- TRIES TO ELIMINATE PREVIOUS SESSIONS BEGIN TRY       DROP EVENT SESSION test_session ON SERVER END TRY BEGIN CATCH END CATCH GO   -- CREATES THE SESSION CREATE EVENT SESSION test_session ON SERVER ADD EVENT sqlserver.error_reported       (ACTION (sqlserver.sql_text) WHERE severity = 2 and (not (message = 'filter'))) ADD TARGET package0.asynchronous_file_target -- CONFIGURES THE FILE TARGET (set filename = 'c:\temp\data2.xel' , metadatafile = 'c:\temp\data2.xem') GO   -- STARTS THE SESSION ALTER EVENT SESSION test_session ON SERVER STATE = START GO   -- THIS EVENT WILL BE FILTERED BECAUSE SEVERITY != 2 RAISERROR (N'PUBLISH', 1, 1, 7, 3, N'abcde'); GO -- THIS EVENT WILL BE FILTERED BECAUSE MESSAGE = 'FILTER' RAISERROR (N'FILTER', 2, 1, 7, 3, N'abcde'); GO -- THIS ERROR WILL BE PUBLISHED RAISERROR (N'PUBLISH', 2, 1, 7, 3, N'abcde'); GO   -- STOPS LISTENING FOR THE EVENT ALTER EVENT SESSION test_session ON SERVER STATE = STOP GO   -- REMOVES THE EVENT SESSION FROM THE SERVER DROP EVENT SESSION test_session ON SERVER GO -- REMOVES THE EVENT SESSION FROM THE SERVER select CAST(event_data as XML) as event_data from sys.fn_xe_file_target_read_file ('c:\temp\data2*.xel','c:\temp\data2*.xem', null, null)   This last statement will output one event with the following data: <event name="error_reported" package="sqlserver" id="100" version="1" timestamp="2010-03-05T23:15:05.481Z">   <data name="error">     <value>50000</value>     <text />   </data>   <data name="severity">     <value>2</value>     <text />   </data>   <data name="state">     <value>1</value>     <text />   </data>   <data name="user_defined">     <value>true</value>     <text />   </data>   <data name="message">     <value>PUBLISH</value>     <text />   </data>   <action name="sql_text" package="sqlserver">     <value>-- THIS ERROR WILL BE PUBLISHED RAISERROR (N'PUBLISH', 2, 1, 7, 3, N'abcde'); </value>     <text />   </action> </event> If you see more events, check if you have deleted previous event files. • Add Events to Windows Live Calendar in IE 8

    - by Asian Angel
    Do you have event dates that you need to make note of while browsing in Internet Explorer? Adding those events to your Live Calendar is easy to do with the Add Events to Windows Live Calendar accelerator. Adding Events to your Live Calendar To add the accelerator click on Add to Internet Explorer and then confirm the installation when the secondary window appears. For our example we chose the “estimated” availability date of Microsoft Office 2010 to the public. At the bottom of the pre-order page we found the date we were looking for. To add an event highlight the desired text (will become event description) and select the Add an Event to Windows Live Calendar listing in the context menu. A new tab will be opened where you can add any relevant details or make final tweaks to the description before saving the event. There is our new calendar event ready to send out a notification e-mail for the Office 2010 release. The Add Events to Windows Live Calendar accelerator speeds up the process of adding events to your calendar by getting you directly to the event form. • Suppress task switch keys (winkey, alt-tab, alt-esc, ctrl-esc) using low-level keyboard hook

    - by matt
    I'm trying to suppress task switch keys (such as winkey, alt-tab, alt-esc, ctrl-esc, etc.) by using a low-level keyboard hook. I'm using the following LowLevelKeyboardProc callback: IntPtr HookCallback(int nCode, IntPtr wParam, ref KBDLLHOOKSTRUCT lParam) { if (nCode >= 0) { bool suppress = false; // Suppress left and right windows keys. if (lParam.Key == VK_LWIN || lParam.Key == VK_RWIN) suppress = true; // Suppress alt-tab. if (lParam.Key == VK_TAB && HasAltModifier(lParam.Flags)) suppress = true; // Suppress alt-escape. if (lParam.Key == VK_ESCAPE && HasAltModifier(lParam.Flags)) suppress = true; // Suppress ctrl-escape. /* How do I hook CTRL-ESCAPE ? */ // Suppress keys by returning 1. if (suppress) return new IntPtr(1); } return CallNextHookEx(HookID, nCode, wParam, ref lParam); } bool HasAltModifier(int flags) { return (flags & 0x20) == 0x20; } However, I'm at a loss as to how to suppress the CTRL-ESC combination. Any suggestions? Thanks.

  • Add Keyboard Binding To Existing Emacs Mode

    - by Sean M
    I'm attempting my first modification of emacs. I recorded a little keyboard macro and had emacs spit it out as elisp, resulting in: (setq add-docstring "\C-rdef\C-n\C-a\C-m\C-p\C-i\C-u6\"\C-u3\C-b") (global-set-key "\C-c\C-d" 'add-docstring) Searching the emacs reference, though, revealed that C-c C-d is already bound in diff mode. I don't plan on using diff mode, but the future is unknowable and I'd like to not lay a trap for myself. So I'd like this keybinding to only operate in python mode, where it tries to help me add docstrings. In my /usr/share/emacs/23.whatever/list/progmodes, I found python.elc and python.el.gz. I unzipped python.el.gz and got a readable version of the elisp file. Now, though, the documentation becomes opaque to me. How can I add my key binding to the python mode, instead of globally? Is it possible, for bonus points, to apply the changes to python mode without restarting emacs or closing open files? It's the self-modifying editor, I figure there's a good chance that it's possible.

  • Apple Aluminum Keyboard Via Bluetooth - Fn Key Problem

    - by Richard
    I'm connecting an Apple Bluetooth Aluminum keyboard (this one) to my Lubuntu setup using the blueman applet. The keyboard types fine, but I would like to use its fn key to change screen brightness changing, page-up (fn+ctrl+down), page-down (fn+ctrl+up), et cetera. Right now the fn key doesn't seem to work. When I use xev, I don't see anything happen when I press fn. Does the keyboard not send this to the computer at all? Do I need to configure blueman's "Input Service" setting to make this an Apple (rather than a generic) keyboard? (It's not obvious how to do this.) Is xev just not showing the fn key? Where in this stack of software do I need to make a change to achieve the desired behaviour? Thanks!

  • Harnessing Business Events for Predictive Decision Making - part 1 / 3

    - by Sanjeev Sharma
    Businesses have long relied on data mining to elicit patterns and forecast future demand and supply trends. Improvements in computing hardware, specifically storage and compute capacity, have significantly enhanced the ability to store and analyze mountains of data in ever shrinking time-frames. Nevertheless, the reality is that data growth is outpacing storage capacity by a factor of two and computing power is still very much bounded by Moore's Law, doubling only every 18 months.Faced with this data explosion, businesses are exploring means to develop human brain-like capabilities in their decision systems (including BI and Analytics) to make sense of the data storm, in other words business events, in real-time and respond pro-actively rather than re-actively. It is more like having a little bit of the right information just a little bit before hand than having all of the right information after the fact. To appreciate this thought better let's first understand the workings of the human brain.Neuroscience research has revealed that the human brain is predictive in nature and that talent is nothing more than exceptional predictive ability. The cerebral-cortex, part of the human brain responsible for cognition, thought, language etc., comprises of five layers. The lowest layer in the hierarchy is responsible for sensory perception i.e. discrete, detail-oriented tasks whereas each of the above layers increasingly focused on assembling higher-order conceptual models. Information flows both up and down the layered memory hierarchy. This allows the conceptual mental-models to be refined over-time through experience and repetition. Secondly, and more importantly, the top-layers are able to prime the lower layers to anticipate certain events based on the existing mental-models thereby giving the brain a predictive ability. In a way the human brain develops a "memory of the future", some sort of an anticipatory thinking which let's it predict based on occurrence of events in real-time. A higher order of predictive ability stems from being able to recognize the lack of certain events. For instance, it is one thing to recognize the beats in a music track and another to detect beats that were missed, which involves a higher order predictive ability.Existing decision systems analyze historical data to identify patterns and use statistical forecasting techniques to drive planning. They are similar to the human-brain in that they employ business rules very much like mental-models to chunk and classify information. However unlike the human brain existing decision systems are unable to evolve these rules automatically (AI still best suited for highly specific tasks) and  predict the future based on real-time business events. Mistake me not,  existing decision systems remain vital to driving long-term and broader business planning. For instance, a telco will still rely on BI and Analytics software to plan promotions and optimize inventory but tap into business events enabled predictive insight to identify specifically which customers are likely to churn and engage with them pro-actively. In the next post, i will depict the technology components that enable businesses to harness real-time events and drive predictive decision making.

  • Install 12.10 using Logitech Keyboard and mouse with bluetooth dongle

    - by Ryan
    I'm trying to install 12.10 on my system, but my mouse and keyboard are not working during installation. I use the Logitech MX5500 Bluetooth mouse+keyboard combo with a Bluetooth dongle. My keyboard and mouse work in my UEFI bios, and during the Windows 7/8 installation. My keyboard also works in the Ubuntu screen that allows me to set options, install, use the live cd, etc, before boot. I'm wondering if anyone knows a way to get this dongle working during the installation process so that I can actually install 12.10. Thanks.
