• vmware server end of life, where to go now?

  We have some virtual machines on vmware server 2.x running on 64 bit hardware and quite happy with it. As vmware server will no longer be offered we are thinking to migrate to ESXi, which seems is free. We will have to install the specialized network cards but that's a minor problem. But once left alone with a quite silently discontinued product there is some resistance to vmware. VirtualBox seems to work: http://blogs.oracle.com/virtualization/2010/06/migrating_from_vmware_to_virtu.html What other free (of licencing cost) options are there? We have windows server 2003 32 bit VMs and also linux 32 and 64 bit VMs to migrate. So xen does not seem an option, which does not run microsoft OSes.

  My physical PC is running 2 VMs on virtualbox. Both of the VM's are linux 64 bit. Don’t forget to give it a look. I agree with Mike because after I looked into the /etc/hosts files, it has just default localhost stuff in it. How should I reconfigure the hosts file?

• Cannot access virtual machine via ping from the physical host machine

  I'm installing a FreeBSD Server on VirtualBox. I set up the IP address (192.168.10.5) for the virtual server to run a mail server and the host computer(Windows 7) with 192.168.10.184. The two machines cannot communicate or connect to each other. I cannot ping from the virtual machine to the host and vice versa. The host machine connects to a LAN. I want the mail server to run frm a VMachine. I think it's a problem with the network configuration of the virtual machine.

• Turnkeylinux lampp guest doesn't have internet connection

  I've set up a turnkeylinux lampp server in virtualbox with two network bridged connections, one for when I'm plugged in to my router, and one for when I'm using a wireless connection. This allowed me to pull up the turnkey control panel on the host machine's browser, but when I try going into the command prompt in the guest and run an apt-get update, it doesn't seem to have an internet connection, even though it seems to have a connection with the host. What could be wrong? Thank you very much in advance for any answers...!

• An efficient setup of several VPSs on one box?

  Hello all, I hope its ok to ask this question on serverfault, its not an actual fault but more of an implementation advice request. I would like to have a dedicated server that I can deploy my own VPSs on. These VPS will be various windows, Mac and Linux operating systems. I was thinking of buying a large Linux based dedicated server and then running VMWare Server or Virtualbox and adding my own images on there for each OS but I am thinking this isn't going to be cost effective and easy to maintain. I am hoping someone can help me with the perfect setup that is both cost effective and efficient so that I can have 6 VPS at my disposal that I can easily control. Thanks all for any help.

• Intel VT-x disappeared after upgrading to Windows 8

  I've upgraded to Windows 8 some weeks ago (MSDNAA!) and today, while I was trying to run a VM, I've noticed that VT-x is disabled. Now, Hyper-V works without problems, as I've tried emulating Win7 and WP8; but VirtualBox says that VT-x is disabled and it can't run my VM. Just to double check, I've run Securable by GRC and the Intel utility and both says that I've got VT-x off. Here comes the problem: VT-x is ON in my BIOS, and it worked flawlessly before upgrading to Windows 8! Any kind of suggestion? EDIT: My CPU supports VT-x: http://ark.intel.com/products/52219

• Pure-FTPd: Which IP Address To Use For Login?

  I am trying to connect to my VirtualBox LAMP Server with FileZilla, and it's not working. I have a static IP set, a FTP user set (with FTPd), and can connect successfully with ftp localhost, but not with Filezilla with the same credentials. I suspect this is because I am using the wrong IP address in the Host box. so is there a command I can use to display the IP address used to connect to my FTP? BTW, error code given in FileZilla is: Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message... Response: 425 Sorry, invalid address given Error: Could not connect to server

• Virtual guest does not have network access in cafe.

  My Virtualbox guest OS (Ubuntu on ubuntu host) does not connect to the internet when I have wifi access through an internet cafe system. By this, I mean where your browser redirects to an internal web page where you can enter a code. On the guest, I can successfully connect to the virtual network adapter, but I do not get internet access, nor a redirect to the internal web page. I use OpenDNS for the host. I have no problems when connecting through ethernet or regular wifi. Can someone tell me any of: 1) How to fix the problem. 2) How such cafe systems work. 3) At least point me to a technical explanation of such a cafe system so I can begin to troubleshoot. Thanks!

• What is the best way to hide a command prompt window

  I'm running the headless interface of VirtualBox (VBoxHeadless.exe) with Ubuntu Server running on it. Every time I run VBoxHeadless, it starts a command prompt window which just sits on the taskbar taking space which could have been used by more useful programs. I want to hide this non-functional command prompt window (minimize to system tray or anything that just removes it visibly). How can I do this? It would be really cool, if this can be achieved without installing any 'minimize to system tray' utility. Any ideas??

  I'm writing procedures for configuring VirtualBox support for 64-bit SMP guests, which requires hardware virtualization suppot (VTx/Intel, AMD-V/AMD). I have successfully configured this myself, however I'd like the procedure to be clear. sed -ne '/^flags/s/^.*: //p' /proc/cpuinfo | egrep -q '(vmx|svm)' && echo Has hardware virt || echo No HW virt ... shows if the CPU is capable. I've still got to go enable the feature in BIOS. Any way to test from within Linux to see that this is no or not? Thanks.

  I'm trying to find out the best "bang for my buck" so to speak in regards to virtual machines, and SMP. I have an Intel Core 2 Duo, which of course has two cores and the VT extensions, and I'm running Ubuntu Linux (host) on it with VirtualBox, which has Windows Vista (guest). Currently I've got the guest machine setup for two processors to give Windows a chance to manage its own parallelism, but I'm not certain that it's any faster. I've tried it with just one processor, but it's hard to tell if it's any better. Any thoughts? Should the guest have two processors setup?

• How can I route packets from one application to a virtual machine in windows 7?

  I am trying to test an application running in windows 7, and I would like to send the packets it generates to a server VM (I am using virtualbox) on the local machine which will act as a simulation for when packets will be really sent over the internet to a distant server. I need to check for correctness of the packets in certain situations. Is there a way on windows to take packets produced by an application and instead of passing it to my router, pass it along to another process, i.e. my virtual machine. I'd prefer not to change any of the code on my application and would rather find an outside solution. Is there such a solution for windows 7?

  I have installed Android as per this guide as a guess os via VirtualBox: http://www.android-x86.org/documents/virtualboxhowto Using the following ISO: android-x86-4.0-RC1-eeepc.iso But I am unable to connect to the internet from within the android virtual machine. The host OS is Ubuntu 12.04 where the internet works fine. I have internet access via a usb wireless connection to the home router. All this is fine. If I install Ubuntu 12.04 as a guest, where the host is also Ubuntu 12.04. The guest os'es internet works fine out of the box. But for some reason, I can't get the above androids internet to work out of the box as the guest os. Anyone know what I am doing wrong?

• pxelinux hanging when booting client machine

  I'm kind of new to all of this, so please forgive any vagueness/misunderstandings on my part. I'm using pxelinux and VMs to create CentOS 6.0 machines that have the same install every time. I have a new VM set to boot from network, but in the process of booting up it gets stuck at "Loading 10.1.1.20:/pxelinux.0" (10.1.1.20 is the address of the server it's getting info from). pxelinux conf: http://pastebin.com/4XfZZPY1 I'm pretty sure all my config files are correct, could it be VirtualBox related? • Use Internet Explorer 6 and 7 in Virtual Box.

  Hello. I am trying to install the vhds (virtual hard drive image) of IE6 on XP and IE 7 on XP packs available from Microsoft on Virtual Box. Virtual Box will only mount CD/DVD's and/or ISO's. How do I get it to use the Microsoft files? I need this to test web pages in IE6/IE7s. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium. Is there a way to do this, or another way that will allow me to load XP/IE6 and XP/IE7 in Virtualbox Edit: Ok I got it to work but it says XP must be updated in 3 days due to hardware changes. Microsoft said this would be activated til January 1st 2010. Is there a way to bypass that?

• virtual machines: optimal host os to run Windows XP guest os?

  My department doesn't have the budget to upgrade my ailing Dell D620 laptop. However, I do have the option to buy my own personal computer, then use my company-issued ISO image to run Windows XP as my guest os using virtualbox or vmware. Therefore, last month, I bought an Acer AX3910-U3012 desktop that had Windows 7 as the host os (and 8G RAM). In short, I was disappointed with the performance while trying to run WinXP as the guest os. (It didn't perform much better than my laptop.) Just wondering what the optimal host os would be for running Windows XP as the guest os? (No, I can't use my company-issued ISO image to build the os for my personal computer.) FWIW, I'm willing to spend up to $2k if it's REALLY worth it, but would prefer to spend no more than $1k. Also, in an effort to cut costs, I'd prefer buy a desktop instead of a laptop.   Hi All, I'm a newbie developer wanting to learn a bit about Virtualization (from the IT point of view, not theoretical/academic). What I'd like to do: Prepare a machine Install VMWare or VirtualBox Prepare 3 Guest OSes (one for Win2k8 server, 2 for Ubuntu Server) Win2k8 will run SQL Server 2k8 and IIS (for ASP.NET MVC deployment) 1 Ubuntu Server for Drupal, SugarCRM, MediaWiki, typical LAMP stuff 1 Ubuntu Server for Java (Tomcat/Jetty + MySQL/PostgreSQL) What I'd like to know: What would be the ideal Host OS such that the Host OS should not spend too many resources on itself but should boost these instances of VMs (e.g: does Win2k8 performs better vs Linux?) What would be the ideal machine for this (preferably AMD base chip) I'm not expecting the best performance out of this setup, just a decent one to host one drupal instance, one ASP.NET MVC (future, not now), and one Tomcat/Jetty instance. NB: If you have a better suggestions on the setup, feel free to let me know (e.g: maybe Drupal and Tomcat can be in one instance but move the database to another instance instead of 1 instance map to 1 webserver and 1 dbserver).   I tried to change the MAC address in a ubuntu VM (virtualbox), but after that it threw lots of errors during boot, and then I had no internet connection. Then I saw that the interface was renamed to eth1, so I edited /etc/network/interfaces to change eth0 to eth1, rebooted (didn't know how to restart the network), and boot was now faster and internet worked fine. But now after every time I log in, I get 1 or 2 error messages that say nothing, they only ask me if I want to report them. So I was wondering, is there was a proper way to change MAC address, to avoid these issues?

I have looked through the virtualbox manuals but nothing extremely technical came up (It was just a generic gloss over of the topic) How does it assign a different ip to the virtual machine but uses the same network card? Why does this different ip (I found using ip addr under linux) not show up under the "attached devices section" of my router but I can port forward to it? How come if I connect to a password protected wifi network, it does not require me to enter my password? Is this multihoming?

It also said that there is a network configuration problem. And when I inputted the ip address from whatismyip.com which should be the same as the ip address on local machine. I didn't get the previous error but I got another one, it said that: insufficient permissions to connect to "ip address" What solution can you suggest for this problem?

  I am trying to checkout into the virtualbox shared folder with svn 1.7 in ubuntu 12.04 running as a guest on a windows 7 host. I had read that this error was a 1.6 problem, and updated - but am still receiving the error: svn: E000071: Can't move '/mnt/hostShare/code/www/.svn/tmp/svn-hsOG5X' to '/mnt/hostShare/code/www/trunk/statement.aspx?d=201108': Protocol error I found this blog post about the same error in a mac environment, but am finding that changing the folder/file permissions does nothing. vim .svn/entires just has the number 12 - does this need to be changed? Thank you for any assistance! (just another reason for why I prefer git...)

  So here is my current objective: I need to create two guest instances of Ubuntu Desktop 9.10 in VirtualBox on a WindowsXP host. (This is needed for communications later on.) (this step is almost done) I need to establish networking between all three OS's, the host and two guests (Guest1 - Host - Guest2). I know that generally, to establish networking between Windows host and Ubuntu guest, we set up a bridge connection. But here there are two guests, and primarily I need networking between the two guests (Ubuntu to Ubuntu). So will there need to be a change in tap0 and tap1 interfaces when we set up a bridge, or is there a better way to implement this? Please explain the procedure.

• Simple active directory permissions issue

  So I've created a domain controller (DC) as well as 3 machines (SQL-A, SQL-B, SQL-CORE). All are running Windows Server2008R2 (on virtualbox). I have successfully joined the 3 machines to the domain controller. Next I created a user in active directory called Kim_Akers who is a member of "Domain Admins", "Domain users", "Enterprise Admins" and "Schema Admins". However when I login to SQL-A for example as contso/Kim_Akers and then try and run something like the ServerManager.msc I can't do it due to lack of permissions "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions". What am I doing wrong that Kim_Akers doesn't have permissions to do this? Thanks.

• Setting execute permission on a Fedora 11 (host and guest) shared folder file is not working for me.

  I have set up a VirtualBox Fedora 11 (i386) guest on my Fedora 11 (x86_64) host system with shared folders enabled. I mount the shared folder successfully with the recommended "mount -t vboxsf share /shareddir -o rw,exec,uid=500,gid=100" command. I can successfully read and write files in the share from the guest but I cannot set the execute bit on any file in the share from the guest system. Nothing in GoogleSpace seems to address my issue let alone provide a solution. fwiw, selinux is disabled on both the guest and host and the shared folder is an ext4 file system.
