I made the following test for my class: var mock = new Mock<IRandomNumberGenerator>(); mock.Setup(framework => framework.Generate(0, 50)) .Returns(7.0); var rnac = new RandomNumberAverageCounter(mock.Object, 1, 100); rnac.Run(); double result = rnac.GetAverage(); Assert.AreEqual(result, 7.0, 0.1); The problem here was that I changed my mind about what range of values Generate(int min, int max) would use. So in Mock.Setup() I defined the range as from 0 to 50 while later I actually called the Generate() method with a range from 1 to 100. I ran the test and it failed. I know that that is what it's supposed to happen but I was left wondering if isn't there a way to launch an exception or throw in a message when trying to run the method with wrong params. Also, if I want to run this Generate() method 10 times with different values (let's say, from 1 to 10), will I have to make 10 mock setups or something, or is there a special method for it? The best I could think of is this (which isn't bad, I'm just asking if there is other better way): for (int i = 1; i < 10; ++i) { mock.Setup(framework => framework.Generate(1, 100)) .Returns((double)i); }

How do I select every 6th element from a list (using Linq)

Hi, I've got a list of 'double' values. I need to select every 6th record. It's a list of coordinates, where I need to get the minimum and maximum value of every 6th value. List of coordinates (sample): [2.1, 4.3, 1.0, 7.1, 10.6, 39.23, 0.5, ... ] with hundrets of coordinates. Result should look like: [x_min, y_min, z_min, x_max, y_max, z_max] with exactly 6 coordinates. Following code works, but it takes to long to iterate over all coordinates. I'd like to use Linq instead (maybe faster?) for (int i = 0; i < 6; i++) { List<double> coordinateRange = new List<double>(); for (int j = i; j < allCoordinates.Count(); j = j + 6) coordinateRange.Add(allCoordinates[j]); if (i < 3) boundingBox.Add(coordinateRange.Min()); else boundingBox.Add(coordinateRange.Max()); } Any suggestions? Background-image is not displaying in Firefox

How to get attributes from both relative and absolute positioning

I have a footer that i want to attach to the bottom of the page using bottom:0px. However, I also want to center it by using margin-left:auto; and margin-right:auto;. Effectively, this will stick the footer to the bottom of the page while keeping it centered vertically. Unfortunately, these cannot be used together as bottom:0px requires position:relative while margin-left:auto and margin-right:auto require position:absolute. How can I get both of these attributes onto the same div without creating a container? If not possible, what is a clean way of getting both these attributes? sprintf bug with php & apache in windows?

I've run into a strange problem on a WAMP server setup (PHP version 5.3.0, Apache 2.2.11). When using sprintf to output a number, I occasionally get erroneous characters in the output string. Example: (not trimmed from anything, this is the only code in the script) $dt1 = new DateTime('now'); $dt2 = new DateTime('now - 10 min'); $interval = $dt1->diff($dt2); $number = 10.0; $string = sprintf("%.1f", $number); echo "number: $number, string: $string\n"; If I run this at the command prompt with PHP CLI, I get the expected output: number: 10, string: 10.0 However, if I serve it using Apache, in the browser I get number: 10, string: :.0 with a colon where '10' should be. (Note that ':' is the next ascii character in sequence after '9', if $number is 0-9, everything works. Numbers greater than 10 appear to use ascii equivalents - so 11 is ';', 12 is '<', etc.) The strangest part is that the first four lines in the above code sample seem to affect the results. Logically, those statements should have no impact, but if I comment them out or remove them the problem goes away. Any ideas? Anyone else able to replicate this?

Hi, I solved this problem by following a straightforward but not optimal algorithm. I sorted the vector in descending order and after that substracted numbers from max to min to see if I get a + b + c = d. Notice that I haven't used anywhere the fact that elements are natural, distinct and 10 000 at most. I suppose these details are the key. Does anyone here have a hint over an optimal way of solving this? Thank you in advance! Find existence of number in a sorted list in constant time? (Interview question)

I'm studying for upcoming interviews and have encountered this question several times (written verbatim) Find or determine non existence of a number in a sorted list of N numbers where the numbers range over M, M N and N large enough to span multiple disks. Algorithm to beat O(log n); bonus points for constant time algorithm. First of all, I'm not sure if this is a question with a real solution. My colleagues and I have mused over this problem for weeks and it seems ill formed (of course, just because we can't think of a solution doesn't mean there isn't one). A few questions I would have asked the interviewer are: Are there repeats in the sorted list? What's the relationship to the number of disks and N? One approach I considered was to binary search the min/max of each disk to determine the disk that should hold that number, if it exists, then binary search on the disk itself. Of course this is only an order of magnitude speedup if the number of disks is large and you also have a sorted list of disks. I think this would yield some sort of O(log log n) time. As for the M N hint, perhaps if you know how many numbers are on a disk and what the range is, you could use the pigeonhole principle to rule out some cases some of the time, but I can't figure out an order of magnitude improvement. Also, "bonus points for constant time algorithm" makes me a bit suspicious. Any thoughts, solutions, or relevant history of this problem?

I define a method called dist, to calculate the distance between two points which I does it correctly when directly using the method. However, when I get a function to call it to calculate the distance between two points, I get UnboundLocalError: local variable 'minkowski_distance' referenced before assignment edit sorry, I just realised, this function does work. However I have another method calling it that doesn't. Getting a Script Error Every Time I Click a Link

I have everything working perfectly on my site, but for some reason, I get an error message in console whenever I click a link anywhere on my site. Ultimately, I am trying to make it so my scroll-to setting still works, but not have that error come up anymore. I made this script a long time ago, and I'm really confused as to what could be causing this error when everything is functioning perfectly otherwise? Thanks!

Align a set of elements that are not next to each other in the HTML

The problem is that the contents of each row may vary. Without setting a min-height of each row, how could i make sure that each row visually lines up with its corresponding row from the other column? I can't think of any way to achieve this in CSS alone. I'm wondering if there's some sneaky jQuery way of achieving this? EDIT: I Can't change the HTML structure. Cheers

One limitation on Windows Phone 7 is related to System.Net namespace classes. There is no convenient way to read data from web. There is no WebClient class. There is no GetResponse() method – we have to do it all asynchronously because compact framework has limited set of classes we can use in our applications to communicate with internet. In this posting I will show you how to read RSS-feeds on Windows Phone 7. NB! This is my draft code and it may contain some design flaws and some questionable solutions. This code is intended to use as test-drive for Windows Phone 7 CTP developer tools and I don’t suppose you are going to use this code in production environment. Current state of my RSS-reader Currently my RSS-reader for Windows Phone 7 is very simple, primitive and uses almost all defaults that come out-of-box with Windows Phone 7 CTP developer tools. My first goal before going on with nicer user interface design was making RSS-reading work because instead of convenient classes from .NET Framework we have to use very limited classes from .NET Framework CE. This is why I took the reading of RSS-feeds as my first task. There are currently more things to solve regarding user-interface. As I am pretty new to all this Silverlight stuff I am not very sure if I can modify default controls easily or should I write my own controls that have better look and that work faster. The image on right shows you how my RSS-reader looks like right now. Upper side of screen is filled with list that shows headlines from this blog. The bottom part of screen is used to show description of selected posting. You can click on the image to see it in original size. In my next posting I will show you some improvements of my RSS-reader user interface that make it look nicer. But currently it is nice enough to make sure that RSS-feeds are read correctly. FeedItem class As this is most straight-forward part of the following code I will show you RSS-feed items class first. Protecting a WebCenter app with OAM 11g - the Webcenter side

Recently, there was a customer requirment to enable a WebCenter custom portal application to have multiple login-type pages and have the authentication be handle through Oracle Access Manager (OAM) As my security colleagues would tell me, this is fully supported through OAM. Basically, all that would have to be done is to define in OAM individual resources (directories, URLS , .etc) that needed to be secured. Once that was done, OAM would handle the rest and the user would typically then be prompted by a login page, which was provided by OAM. I am not going to discuss talking about OAM security in this blog. In addition, my colleague Chris Johnson (ATEAM security) has already blogged his side of the story here: http://fusionsecurity.blogspot.com/2012/06/protecting-webcenter-app-with-oam-11g.html . What I am going to cover is what was done on the WebCenter/ADF side of things. In the test application, basically the structure of pages defined in the pages.xml are as follows: In this screenshot, notice that "Delegated Security" has been selected, and of the absence for the anonymous-role for the "secured" page (A - B is the same) This essentially in the WebCenter world means that each of these pages are protected, and only accessible by those define by the applications "role". For more information on how WebCenter handles security, which by the way extends from ADF security, please refer to the documentation. The (default) navigation model was configured. You can see that with this set up, a user will be able to view the "links", where the links define navigation to the respective page: Note from this dialog, you could also set some security on each link via the "visible" property. However, the recommended best practice is to set the permissions through the page hierarchy (pages.xml). Now based on this set up, the expected behavior is that I could only see the link for secured A page only if I was already authenticated (logged in). But, this is not the use case of the requirement, since any user (anonymous) should be able to view (and click on the link). So how is this accomplished? There is now a patch that enables this. In addition, the portal application's web.xml will need an additional context parameter: <context-param> <param-name>oracle.webcenter.navigationframework.SECURITY_LEVEL</param-name> <param-value>public</param-value> </context-param> As Chris mentions in his part of the blog, the code that is responsible for displaying the "links" is based upon the retrieval of the navigation model "node" prettyURL. The prettyURL is a generated URL that also includes the adf.ctrl-state token, which is very important to the ADF framework runtime. URLs that are void of this token, get new tokens from the ADF runtime. Since the OAM can also configure in the Authentication Scheme, the challenging URL (the login page(s)) can also come from anywhere. In this case the each login page have been defined in the custom portal application. This was another requirement as well, since this login page also needed to have ADF based content. This would not be possible if the login page came from OAM. The most important section is in the form tag, where the submit is a POST to the OAM server. This example page is mostly HTML, however, it is valid to have adf tags mixed in as well. As a side note, this solution is really to tailored for a specific requirement. Normally, there would be only one login page (or dialog/popup), and the OAM challenge resource would be /adfAuthentication. This maps to the adfAuthentication servlet. Windows Phone 7: Building a simple dictionary web client

Like I mentioned in this post a while back, I came across a dictionary web service called Aonaware that serves up word definitions from various dictionaries and is really easy to use. The services page on their website, http://services.aonaware.com/DictService/DictService.asmx, lists all the operations that are supported by the dictionary service. Here they are, Word Dictionary Web Service The following operations are supported. For a formal definition, please review the Service Description. Define Define given word, returning definitions from all dictionaries DefineInDict Define given word, returning definitions from specified dictionary DictionaryInfo Show information about the specified dictionary DictionaryList Returns a list of available dictionaries DictionaryListExtended Returns a list of advanced dictionaries (e.g. translating dictionaries) Match Look for matching words in all dictionaries using the given strategy MatchInDict Look for matching words in the specified dictionary using the given strategy ServerInfo Show remote server information StrategyList Return list of all available strategies on the server Follow the links above to get more information on each API. In this post we will be building a simple windows phone 7 client which uses this service to get word definitions for words entered by the user. The application will also allow the user to select a dictionary from all the available ones and look up the word definition in that dictionary. So of all the apis above we will be using only two, DictionaryList() to get a list of all supported dictionaries and DefineInDict() to get the word definition from a particular dictionary. Before we get started, a note to you all; I would have liked to implement this application using concepts from data binding, item templates, data templates etc. I have a basic understanding of what they are but, being a beginner, I am not very comfortable with those topics yet so I didn’t use them. I thought I’ll get this version out of the way and maybe in the next version I could give those a try. A somewhat scary mock-up of the what the final application will look like, Select Dictionary is a list picker control from the silverlight toolkit (you need to download and install the toolkit if you haven’t already). Below it is a textbox where the user can enter words to look up and a button beside it to fetch the word definition when clicked. Finally we have a textblock which occupies the remaining area and displays the word definition from the selected dictionary. Create a silverlight application for windows phone 7, AonawareDictionaryClient, and add references to the silverlight toolkit and the web service. From the solution explorer right on References and select Microsoft.Phone.Controls.Toolkit from under the .NET tab, Next, add a reference to the web service. Again right click on References and this time select Add Service Reference In the resulting dialog paste the service url in the Address field and press go, (url –> http://services.aonaware.com/DictService/DictService.asmx) once the service is discovered, provide a name for the NameSpace, in this case I’ve called it AonawareDictionaryService. Press OK. You can now use the classes and functions that are generated in the AonawareDictionaryClient.AonawareDictionaryService namespace. Let’s get the UI done now. First row contains the list picker control, second row contains the textbox and the button, and the third row contains a textblock within a scroll viewer. The designer will now be showing the final ui, Now go to MainPage.xaml.cs, and add the following namespace declarations, using Microsoft.Phone.Controls; using AonawareDictionaryClient.AonawareDictionaryService; using System.IO.IsolatedStorage; A class called DictServiceSoapClient would have been created for you in the background when you added a reference to the web service. This class functions as a wrapper to the services exported by the web service. All the web service functions that we saw at the start can be access through this class, or more precisely through an object of this class. Create a data member of type DictServiceSoapClient in the Mainpage class, and a function which initializes it, DictServiceSoapClient DictSvcClient = null; private DictServiceSoapClient GetDictServiceSoapClient() { if (null == DictSvcClient) { DictSvcClient = new DictServiceSoapClient(); } return DictSvcClient; } We have two major tasks remaining. First, when the application loads we need to populate the list picker with all the supported dictionaries and second, when the user enters a word and clicks on the arrow button we need to fetch the word’s meaning. Populating the List Picker In the OnNavigatingTo event of the MainPage, we call the DictionaryList() api. This can also be done in the OnLoading event handler of the MainPage; not sure if one has an advantage over the other. When we added a reference to the dictionary service, asynchronous versions of all the functions were generated automatically. So in the above function we register a handler to the DictionaryListCompleted event which will occur when the call to DictionaryList() gets a response from the server. Then we call the DictionaryListAsynch() function which is the async version of the DictionaryList() api. If there was an error, we check the isolated storage settings to see if there is a dictionary list stored from a previous instance of the application and if so, we populate the list picker based on this saved list. Note that in this case there are chances that the dictionary list might be out of date if there have been changes on the server. Finally, if none of these cases are true, we display an error message to the user and try to fetch the list again. Fetching word definitions Getting this part done is very similar to the above code. We get the input word from the textbox, call into DefineInDictAsync() to fetch the definition and when DefineInDictAsync completes, we get the result and display it in the textblock. This class is also generated in the background while adding the service reference. We check the word definitions within this class to see if any results were returned, if not, we display a message to the user in the textblock. If a definition was found the text on the textblock is set to display the definition of the word. Adding final touches, we now need to save the current dictionary when the application exits. A small but useful thing is selecting the entire word in the input textbox when the user selects it. Create excel files with GemBox.Spreadsheet .NET component

Generating excel files from .NET code is not always a very easy task, especially if you need to make some formatting or you want to do something very specific that requires extra coding. I’ve recently tried the GemBox Spreadsheet and I would like to share my experience with you. First of all, you can install GemBox Spreadsheet library from VS.NET 2010 Extension manager by searching in the gallery: Go in the Online Gallery tab (as in the picture bellow) and write GemBox in the Search box on top-right of the Extension Manager, so you will get the following result: Click Download on GemBox.Spreadsheet and you will be directed to product website. Click on the marked link then you will get to the following page where you have the component download link Once you download it, install the MSI file. Open the installation folder and find the Bin folder. There you have GemBox.Spreadsheet.dll in three folders each for different .NET Framework version. Now, lets move to Visual Studio.NET. 1. Create sample ASP.NET Web Application and give it a name. 2. Reference The GemBox.Spreadsheet.dll file in your project So you don’t need to search for the dll file in your disk but you can simply find it in the .NET tab in ‘Add Reference’ window and you have all three versions. I chose the version for 4.0.30319 runtime. Next, I will retrieve data from my Pubs database. I’m using Entity Framework. MVVM in Task-It

As I'm gearing up to write a post about dynamic XAP loading with MEF, I'd like to first talk a bit about MVVM, the Model-View-ViewModel pattern, as I will be leveraging this pattern in my future posts. Download Source Code Why MVVM? Your first question may be, "why do I need this pattern? I've been using a code-behind approach for years and it works fine." Well, you really don't have to make the switch to MVVM, but let me first explain some of the benefits I see for doing so. MVVM Benefits Testability - This is the one you'll probably hear the most about when it comes to MVVM. Moving most of the code from your code-behind to a separate view model class means you can now write unit tests against the view model without any knowledge of a view (UserControl). Multiple UIs - Let's just say that you've created a killer app, it's running in the browser, and maybe you've even made it run out-of-browser. Now what if your boss comes to you and says, "I heard about this new Windows Phone 7 device that is coming out later this year. Can you start porting the app to that device?". Well, now you have to create a new UI (UserControls, etc.) because you have a lot less screen real estate to work with. So what do you do, copy all of your existing UserControls, paste them, rename them, and then start changing the code? Hmm, that doesn't sound so good. But wait, if most of the code that makes your browser-based app tick lives in view model classes, now you can create new view (UserControls) for Windows Phone 7 that reference the same view model classes as your browser-based app. Page state - In Silverlight you're at some point going to be faced with the same issue you dealt with for years in ASP.NET, maintaining page state. Let's say a user hits your Products page, does some stuff (filters record, etc.), then leaves the page and comes back later. It would be best if the Products page was in the same state as when they left it right? Well, if you've thrown away your view (UserControl or Page) and moved off to another part of the UI, when you come back to Products you're probably going to re-instantiate your view...which will put it right back in the state it was when it started. Hmm, not good. Well, with a little help from MEF you can store the state in your view model class, MEF will keep that view model instance hanging around in memory, and then you simply rebind your view to the view model class. I made that sound easy, but it's actually a bit of work to properly store and restore the state. At least it can be done though, which will make your users a lot happier! I'll talk more about this in an upcoming blog post. No event handlers? Another nice thing about MVVM is that you can bind your UserControls to the view model, which may eliminate the need for event handlers in your code-behind. So instead of having a Click handler on a Button (or RadMenuItem), for example, you can now bind your control's Command property to a DelegateCommand in your view model (I'll talk more about Commands in an upcoming post). Instead of having a SelectionChanged event handler on your RadGridView you can now bind its SelectedItem property to a property in your view model, and each time the user clicks a row, the view model property's setter will be called. Now through the magic of binding we can eliminate the need for traditional code-behind based event handlers on our user interface controls, and the best thing is that the view model knows about everything that's going on...which means we can test things without a user interface. The brains of the operation So what we're seeing here is that the view is now just a dumb layer that binds to the view model, and that the view model is in control of just about everything, like what happens when a RadGridView row is selected, or when a RadComboBoxItem is selected, or when a RadMenuItem is clicked. It is also responsible for loading data when the page is hit, as well as kicking off data inserts, updates and deletions. Once again, all of this stuff can be tested without the need for a user interface. If the test works, then it'll work regardless of whether the user is hitting the browser-based version of your app, or the Windows Phone 7 version. Nice! The database Before running the code for this app you will need to create the database. First, create a database called MVVMProject in SQL Server, then run MVVMProject.sql in the MVVMProject/Database directory of your downloaded .zip file. This should give you a Task table with 3 records in it. When you fire up the solution you will also need to update the connection string in web.config to point to your database instead of IBM12\SQLSERVER2008. The code One note about this code is that it runs against the latest Silverlight 4 RC and WCF RIA Services code. Please see my first blog post about updating to the RC bits. Beta to RC - Part 1 At the top of this post is a link to a sample project that demonstrates a sample application with a Tasks page that uses the MVVM pattern. This is a simplified version of how I have implemented the Tasks page in the Task-It application. Youll notice that Tasks.xaml has very little code to it. Just a TextBlock that displays the page title and a ContentControl. <StackPanel> <TextBlock Text="Tasks" Style="{StaticResource PageTitleStyle}"/> <Rectangle Style="{StaticResource StandardSpacerStyle}"/> <ContentControl x:Name="ContentControl1"/> </StackPanel> In List.xaml we have a RadGridView. We also have a simple form (Im using a couple of controls here from Silverlight.FX for the form layout, FormPanel and Label simply because they make for a clean XAML layout). Notice that the FormPanel is also bound to the SelectedItem in the view model (the same one that the RadGridView is). The two form controls, the TextBox and RadDatePicker) are bound to the SelectedItem's Name and DueDate properties. The Tasks page will load one of two child UserControls depending on whether you are viewing the list of tasks (List.xaml) or the form for editing a task (Details.xaml). // Set the DataContext to an instance of the view model class var viewModel = new TasksViewModel(); DataContext = viewModel; // Child user controls (inherit DataContext from this user control) List = new List(); // RadGridView Details = new Details(); // Form When the page first loads, the List is loaded into the ContentControl. // Show the RadGridView first ContentControl1.Content = List; In the code-behind we also listen for a couple of the view models events. The ItemSelected event will be fired when the user clicks on a record in the RadGridView in the List control. The SaveCompleted event will be fired when the user clicks Save in the Details control (the form). DataContext is a WCF RIA Services object that well use to retrieve the list of Tasks and to save any changes to a task. Ill talk more about this and Commands in future post, but for now think of the SaveCommand as an event handler that is called when the Save button in the form is clicked. DataContext = new DataContext(); SaveCommand = new DelegateCommand(OnSave); When the TasksViewModel constructor is called we also make a call to LoadTasks. This sets IsLoading to true (which causes the RadGridViews busy indicator to appear) and retrieves the records via WCF RIA Services. public LoadOperation<Task> LoadTasks() { // Show the loading message IsLoading = true; // Get the data via WCF RIA Services. This sets IsLoading to false (which hides the RadGridViews busy indicator), and fires property changed notifications to the UI to let it know that the IsLoading and Tasks properties have changed. This is the one thats bound to both the RadGridView and the form. When the user clicks a record in the RadGridView its setter gets called (set a breakpoint and see what I mean). Wireless card power management

I have noticed that when my computer in plugged in, the wireless strength increases. I'm assuming this is to do with power management. Is there a way to disable Wireless Power Management? I have found a few blog posts that show hacks to disable this but what is best practice here? Should there not be an option via the power menu that lets you toggle this?
