  • rails summing column values of rows with similar attributes

    - by butterywombat
    Hi all, I have a Sites table that has columns name, and time. The name does not have to be unique. So for example I may have the entries 'hi.com, 5', 'hi.com, 10', 'bye.com, 4'. I would like to sum up all the unique sites so that i get 'hi.com, 15' and 'bye.com, 4' for plotting purposes. How can I do that? (For some reference I was looking at http://railscasts.com/episodes/223-charts but I couldn't get the following (translated to my table) to work def self.total_on(date) where("date(purchased_at) = ?", date).sum(:total_price) end nor do I really understand the syntax of the 'where("date(purchased_at) = ?", date)' part. Thanks for helping a rails newbie!

  • Python point lookup (coordinate binning?)

    - by Rince
    Greetings, I am trying to bin an array of points (x, y) into an array of boxes [(x0, y0), (x1, y0), (x0, y1), (x1, y1)] (tuples are the corner points) So far I have the following routine: def isInside(self, point, x0, x1, y0, y1): pr1 = getProduct(point, (x0, y0), (x1, y0)) if pr1 >= 0: pr2 = getProduct(point, (x1, y0), (x1, y1)) if pr2 >= 0: pr3 = getProduct(point, (x1, y1), (x0, y1)) if pr3 >= 0: pr4 = getProduct(point, (x0, y1), (x0, y0)) if pr4 >= 0: return True return False def getProduct(origin, pointA, pointB): product = (pointA[0] - origin[0])*(pointB[1] - origin[1]) - (pointB[0] - origin[0])*(pointA[1] - origin[1]) return product Is there any better way then point-by-point lookup? Maybe some not-obvious numpy routine? Thank you!

  • How does one access subviews and handle groups of them?

    - by david
    If I want to manipulate a view I get it with [self viewWithTag:5];. Is there a better way to do this? Sometimes I need to manipulate a bunch of view (e.g. move them all out of the way. I do this by adding a UIView (e.g. UIView iHoldViews) and then adding the views, buttons, etc to this view. Then I can move the iHoldViews view and all its subviews move with it. Is there a better way to do this? (I have a feeling there is :) Maybe storing them in a NSArray or NSMutableDictionary ?

  • What are the differences in performance between synchronous and asynchronous JavaScript script loading?

    - by jasdeepkhalsa
    My question is simply: what are the differences in performance between synchronous and asynchronous JavaScript script loading? From what I've gathered synchronous code blocks the loading of a page and/or rest of the code from executing. This happens at two levels. First, at the level of the script actually loading, and secondly, within the JavaScript code itself. For example, on the page: Synchronous: <script src="demo_async.js" type="text/javascript"></script> Asynchronous: <script async src="demo_async.js" type="text/javascript"></script> And within a script: Synchronous: function a() {alert("a"); function b() {alert("b");}} Asynchronous (and self-executing): (function(a, function(b){ alert(b); }) { alert(a); }))(); So what really is the difference in performance from using these different loading methods and JavaScript patterns?

  • Empty data was able to be stored to the Database in CakePHP even if "Not Null" had been specified.

    - by kwokwai
    Hi all, I was doing some self learning on CakePHP 1.26 with Mysql 5. I got a simple table with only one field and had applied "Not Null" to this field. This field in the table was corresponding to a Input text box in a HTML form. I tried not to enter anything into the Input text field, and then I saw that empty data was able to be stored into the Table even if "Not Null" had been applied to this field. I am confused of this result. Could you help me please?

  • Objective-C FontAwesome

    - by sdover102
    I'm Attempting to get FontAwesome up and running on an iOS app and could use a little assistance. I have the following code for iOS: UIBarButtonItem * viewDeckButton = [[UIBarButtonItem alloc] initWithTitle:@"\uf0c9" style:UIBarButtonItemStyleBordered target:self.viewDeckController action:@selector(toggleLeftView)]; NSDictionary * customTextAttrs = [NSDictionary dictionaryWithObjectsAndKeys: [UIFont fontWithName:@"FontAwesome" size:14.0], UITextAttributeFont, nil]; [viewDeckButton setTitleTextAttributes:customTextAttrs forState:UIControlStateNormal]; @"\uf0c9" corresponds to the css class, icon-reorder. The font appears to be installed on my system (see http://cl.ly/image/2F1x1z2H0i2N). I'm getting the standard box character, as if the font is not loaded (see http://madmonkdev.com/badchar.png). Any help would be appreciated.

  • How to find out the format of a float?

    - by cannyboy
    I'm working with someone else's code, and there is a float with some unusual qualities. If I output the float using: NSLog(@"theFloat: %f", record.theFloat); I get: theFloat: 0.000000 However, if I use: NSLog(@"(int)theFloat = %i", (int) record.theFloat); I get: (int)theFloat: 71411232 How do I discover the real format and value of theFloat? I know that it should contain a large number. Incidentally, the Record class which contains the float propertizes it in such a way: @property (assign) float* theFloat; There is also floatLength: @property (assign) int floatLength; And has this method, which seems to indicate that the float is of variable length (?): - (void) copyFloat:(float*)theF ofLength:(int)len { float *floatcopy = malloc(len*sizeof(float)); memcpy(floatcopy, theF, len*sizeof(float)); self.theFloat = floatcopy; }

  • increasing speed and efficiency of ajax call

    - by user1048824
    I'm not the most disciplined dev, dont know standards and am self-taught so bear with me. I create stuff very logically and fast but not always using 'programming standards'. I have a mobile app using geolocation API. it gets thousands of places from my db and makes gmaps v3 markers for the ones around the user's current location. there is an ajax call from my JS to an aspx page that calls the database, makes a json string, and sends the json string to the javascript that then creates the google map markers. would i save time if the json string was in a flat file? im not sure if, generally speaking, accessing a sql db from an aspx page is faster than c# file i/o on a flat file with pre-rendered JSON. (of course, using the flat file, it would update everytime the db is updated)

  • should a student be diversifying or mastering programming languages?

    - by Max Link
    As the question states, is it better if a student diversifies or explores when learning programming languages or should they focus only on 2-3 languages and really get to know them well? Example of what I mean by diversifying: Functional -> Scheme Procedural -> C Object Oriented -> Java Dynamic or scripting -> Python Other -> C++ I have a few breaks in between semesters sometimes (up to 3 months) and I'm thinking of either learning a new language or "master" those that I know right now. Which would benefit me in the future? I know some(about 3 months of self studying each) Java, C, and C++ already . If I'm not mistaken, where I live, the industry is heavy on Java, C++, and C#.

  • dynamically double image size

    - by Edan Duarte
    I have an embarrassingly simple question: How can I display an image at double its size without hard coding the width and height attributes? Here's what I tried, but I ended up having to just enter 1000 for width and height. Is something wrong with my function? Thanks! <img onload="double(self.id);" name="bigPic" id="bigPic" src="album1.jpg" height="1000" width="1000"/> function double(id) { var img = document.getElementById(id); var dblWdth = img.width * 2; var dblHt = img.height * 2; img.height = dblHt; img.width = dblWdth; }

  • How to step inside NSManagedObject; access individual attributes.

    - by user300972
    NSManagedObject *entryObj = [self.fetchedResultsController objectAtIndexPath:indexPath]; entryObj consists of four String attributes. If I NSLog entryObj, I get the information I want. I cannot figure out how to access each of these properties individually. I read a similar post where the solution was to call "entity." I cannot figure out how to use "entity" to access a specific attribute. Any ideas? References? Tutorials? Thanks in advance.

  • Singleton design potential leak

    - by iBrad Apps
    I have downloaded a library off of github and have noticed that in the main singleton of the library there is a possible leak in this bit of code: +(DDGameKitHelper*) sharedGameKitHelper { @synchronized(self) { if (instanceOfGameKitHelper == nil) { [[DDGameKitHelper alloc] init]; } return instanceOfGameKitHelper; } return nil; } Now obviously there is no release or autorelease anywhere so I must do it but how and in what way properly? I have looked at various Singleton design patterns on the Internet and they just assign, in this case, instanceOfGameKitHelper to the alloc and init line. Anyway how would I properly fix this? Thanks!

How would I add the class in addition to the existing class? My code is as follows: <xsl:if test="data[@alias = 'off'] = 1"> <xsl:attribute name="class">off</xsl:attribute> </xsl:if> <xsl:if test="$currentPage/ancestor-or-self::node/@id = current()/@id"> <xsl:attribute name="class">active</xsl:attribute> </xsl:if> Thanks.

    Hi, I have a table like this: Table A Date Time ID Ref 110217 91703 A001 A1100056 110217 91703 A001 A1100057 110217 91703 A001 A1100058 110217 91703 A001 A1100059 110217 132440 A001 A1100057 110217 132440 A001 A1100058 110217 132440 A001 A1100060 I wish to have the latest data only & the final result should look like this using SQL: Date Time ID Ref 110217 132440 A001 A1100057 110217 132440 A001 A1100058 110217 132440 A001 A1100060 The database will self-update by itself at certain time. The problem is: I do not know the exact time, hence I do not know which record is the latest. Thanks.

  • Load custom class properly

    - by LinusAn
    I have a custom class which I want to "load" inside the firstViewController and then access it from other classes by segues. My Problem is, I can't even access and change the instance variable inside the firstViewController. Somehow I'm "loading" it wrong. Here is the code I used until now: inside viewController.h @property (strong, nonatomic) myClass *newClass; inside viewController.m @synthesize newClass; I then try to access it by: self.newClass.string = @"myString"; if(newClass.string == @"myString"){ NSLog(@"didn't work"); } Well, I get "didn't work". Why is that? When I write myClass *newClass = [myClass new]; It does work. But the class and its properties gets overwritten every time the ViewController loads again. What would you recommend? Thank you very much.

  • Singleton Creation preference

    - by cwieland
    You can create singletons in a variety of ways. I am wondering which is better between these. +(ServerConnection*)shared{ static dispatch_once_t pred=0; __strong static id _sharedObject = nil; dispatch_once(&pred, ^{ _sharedObject = [[self alloc] init]; // or some other init method }); return _sharedObject; } I could see that this compiles down to something very fast. I would think that checking the predicate would be another function call. The other is: +(ServerConnection*)shared{ static ServerConnection* connection=nil; if (connection==nil) { connection=[[ServerConnection alloc] init]; } return connection; } Are there any major differences between the two? I know these are probably similar enough to not worry about it. But Just wondering.

    I need to create certain number of UUId records (based on the selection of a drop down) and save them in the database. Now I am generating only one unique id. Can this be done in the model in this way? Or do I need to write a helper file for that? def generate_unique_token=(value) self.secret = Base64.encode64(UUIDTools::UUID.random_create)[0..8] end My controller: def create @secretcode = Secretcode.new(params[:secretcode]) @user = User.new(params[:user]) @secretcode.user_id = @user @secretcode.generate_unique_token = params[:secretcode][:secret] if @secretcode.valid? @secretcode.save redirect_to secretcodes_path else render 'new' end end My view page <%= form_for(@secretcode) do |f| %> <%= f.select(:secret, options_for_select([['1',1], ['10',10], ['20',20],['50',50]['100',100]])) %> <%= render 'layouts/error' %> <%=f.label :secret%> <%= f.hidden_field :user %> <%=f.submit :generate %> <% end %>

  • Call subclass constructor from abstract class in Java

    - by Joel
    public abstract class Parent { private Parent peer; public Parent() { peer = new ??????("to call overloaded constructor"); } public Parent(String someString) { } } public class Child1 extends parent { } public class Child2 extends parent { } When I construct an instance of Child1, I want a "peer" to automatically be constructed which is also of type Child1, and be stored in the peer property. Likewise for Child2, with a peer of type Child2. The problem is, on the assignment of the peer property in the parent class. I can't construct a new Child class by calling new Child1() because then it wouldn't work for Child2. How can I do this? Is there a keyword that I can use that would refer to the child class? Something like new self()?

I can make one or more UIButton's like so (in a loop, but shorted for simplicity): UIButton *button = [UIButton buttonWithType:UIButtonTypeRoundedRect]; [button addTarget:self action:@selector(buttonClicked:) forControlEvents:UIControlEventTouchDown]; [button setTitle:@"Button x" forState:UIControlStateNormal]; button.frame = CGRectMake(100.0, 100.0, 120.0, 50.0); [view addSubview:button]; Copied/Edited from this link: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1378765/how-do-i-create-a-basic-uibutton-programmatically But how do I determine in buttonClicked: which button was clicked? I'd like to pass tag data if possible to identify the button.
