• Git for beginners: The definitive practical guide

  Ok, after seeing this post by PJ Hyett, I have decided to skip to the end and go with git. So what I need is a beginners practical guide to git. "Beginner" being defined as someone who knows how to handle their compiler, understands to some level what a makefile is, and has touched source control without understanding it very well. "Practical" being defined as this person doesn't want to get into great detail regarding what git is doing in the background, and doesn't even care (or know) that it's distributed. Your answers might hint at the possibilities, but try to aim for the beginner that wants to keep a 'main' repository on a 'server' which is backed up and secure, and treat their local repository as merely a 'client' resource. • NSURLSession and amazon S3 uploads

  I have an app which is currently uploading images to amazon S3. I have been trying to switch it from using NSURLConnection to NSURLSession so that the uploads can continue while the app is in the background! I seem to be hitting a bit of an issue. The NSURLRequest is created and passed to the NSURLSession but amazon sends back a 403 - forbidden response, if I pass the same request to a NSURLConnection it uploads the file perfectly. Has anyone tried uploading to S3 with this and hit similar issues? I wonder if it is to do with the way the session pauses and resumes uploads, or it is doing something funny to the request..? One possible solution would be to upload the file to an interim server that I control and have that forward it to S3 when it is complete... but this is clearly not an ideal solution! • Uploading images from Flex to Rails using Paperclip

  Hi everyone, I'm looking for a way to upload images that were created in my flex app to rails. I've tried to use paperclip, but it don't seem to work. I've got this tutorial here: http://blog.alexonrails.net/?p=218 The problem is, that they are using a FileReference to browse for files on the clients computer. They call the .upload(...) function and send the data to the upload controller. Then I want to do the same thing in LINQ, and it throws the following error: NHibernate.QueryException: could not resolve property: Url.Length of: DC_Control I've searched alot for this "could not resolve property" error, but I can't quite figure out, what this means. Is this because the LINQ implementation is not complete? If so it's a bit disappointing coming from Linq2Sql where this would just work. I also tried it setting up the mapping with a hbm.xml instead of using FluentNHibernate but it produced teh same error.

  A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away... Trying to migrate a database from MySQL to PostgreSQL. All the documentation I have read covers, in great detail, how to migrate the structure. I have found very little documentation on migrating the data. The schema has 13 tables (which have been migrated successfully) and 9 GB of data. MySQL version: 5.1.x PostgreSQL version: 8.4.x I want to use the R programming language to analyze the data using SQL select statements; PostgreSQL has PL/R, but MySQL has nothing (as far as I can tell). A New Hope Create the database location (/var has insufficient space; also dislike having the PostgreSQL version number everywhere -- upgrading would break scripts!): sudo mkdir -p /home/postgres/main sudo cp -Rp /var/lib/postgresql/8.4/main /home/postgres sudo chown -R postgres.postgres /home/postgres sudo chmod -R 700 /home/postgres sudo usermod -d /home/postgres/ postgres All good to here.   I need help setting a transparent image to the clipboard. I keep getting "handle is invalid". Basically, I need a "second set of eyes" to look over the following code. (The complete working project at ftp://missico.net/ImageVisualizer.zip.) This is an image Debug Visualizer class library, but I made the included project to run as an executable for testing. (Note that window is a toolbox window and show in taskbar is set to false.) I was tired of having to perform a screen capture on the toolbox window, open the screen capture with an image editor, and then deleting the background added because it was a screen capture. So I thought I would quickly put the transparent image onto the clipboard. Well, the problem is...no transparency support for Clipboard.SetImage. Google to the rescue...not quite. This is what I have so far. I pulled from a number of sources. See the code for the main reference. My problem is the "invalid handle" when using CF_DIBV5. Do I need to use BITMAPV5HEADER and CreateDIBitmap?   I've created an ASP.NET MVC application that has an initializer attached to the PreApplicationStartMethodAttribute. When initializing, a collection is instantiated that implements an interface I've defined. If I leave the instantiation, w3wp crashes. If I modify the interface, w3wp still crashes. I've tried every variation I could come up with on the theme of keeping the instantiation but doing everything else differently, but w3wp still crashes. My biggest issue here is that I have absolutely no idea why w3wp is crashing. It's not a StackOverflowException or anything concrete like that, all I get is the unintelligent junk cited above. I've tried to use DebugDiag and IISState to debug the w3wp process, but DebugDiag is only available for post-dump analysis in x64 (I'm running on Windows 7 x64, so the w3wp process is thus 64 bit) and IISStat says the following when I try to run it: D:\Programs\iisstate>IISState.exe -p 9204 -d Symbol search path is: SRV*D:\Programs\iisstate\symbols*http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols IISState is limited to processes associated with IIS. If you require a generic debugger, please use WinDBG or CDB. They are available for download from http://www.microsoft.com/ddk/debugging. This error may also occur if a debugger is already attached to the process being checked. Incorrect Process Attachment I've double-checked 10 times that the process ID of my w3wp process is correct. I'm suspecting that IISState too only can debug x86 processes. Setting a breakpoint anywhere in the application does absolutely nothing. The break point isn't hit and w3wp crashes as soon as the request comes through to IIS from the browser. Starting the application with F5 in Visual Studio 2010 or starting another application to get the w3wp process up and running and then attaching the VS2010 debugger to it and then visiting the faulting application doesn't help. I've also tried to add an HTTP module as described in KB-911816 as well as add this to my web.config file: <configuration> <runtime> <legacyUnhandledExceptionPolicy enabled="true" /> </runtime> </configuration> Needless to say, it makes absolutely no difference. So I'm left with no way to debug the w3wp process, no way to extract any information from it and complete garbage dumped in my event log. If anybody has any idea on how to debug this problem, please let me know! Update My collection was initialized based on RouteTable.Routes which might have thrown an exception (perhaps by not being initialized itself yet in such an early stage of the ASP.NET lifecycle). Postponing the communication with RouteTable.Routes until a later stage solved the problem. While I don't really need an answer to this question anymore, I still find it so obscure that I'll leave it for anyone to comment on and answer, because I found no existing posts on this problem anywhere, so it might be of good reference in the future.

• facebook iframe stream.Publish cannot close dialog or skip

  am pulling my hair over this :( spent 10 hrs but nothing came out I read this thread http://forum.developers.facebook.com/viewtopic.php?pid=198128 but it didn't help much. I'm running a local dev App Engine server ( localhost:8080 ) iframe app so I have a couple of problems. 1) on safari 4.0.4, the publish story dialog comes up nicely with all images/data/action_links. upon posting a story (or skipping), the dialog goes blank and wouldn't close. 2) I tested the same code on firefox 3.5.8, the dialog comes up with all images/data/action_links, but then the whole thing freezes. Clicking anywhere on the dialog doesn't help at all. If i'm patient enough and click "publish", I have to wait for abt 10 seconds before the dialog says "story is published". then it freezes. (clicking on skip doesn't make a difference). btw, there is no "button clicking effect" : ie: the buttons don't look like they "sink down" upon clicking. I checked the firefox memory using the command "top" on the terminal, it all seems okay, no spike in CPU processes ( i could open other firefox tabs and work on them) My futile attempts at solving the problems... 1) so i thought, hmm could this be because of local dev (localhost) problem? I uploaded the code to the production server, the same thing happens. 2) I tried an older firefox (3.1) and the same problem persisted ( the freezing ) 3) I noticed that i kind of used 2 different FB features ( Connect and XFBML). The Connect Feature I used in the PostStory function. The XFBML feature I used before the tag. So I thought, hmm ... I tried replacing the FB_RequireFeatures["Connect"] feature with FB_RequireFeatures["XFBML"]. nothing changed. • ASP.NET MVC2 Model Validation Fails with Non-US Date Format

  I have a small MVC2 app that displays in two cultures: en-US and es-MX. One portion contains a user input for a date that is pre-populated with the current date in the Model. When using en-US, the date field is displayed as MM/dd/yyyy and can be changed using the same format without causing any validation errors. When using es-MX, the date field is displayed as dd/MM/yyyy, but when the date is edited in this format, the server-side validation fails with the message: The value '17/05/1991' is not valid for The Date. One of the first things that jumps out at me about that message is that it is not localized. Both the message itself (which I do not think I can control) and the Display Name of the field (which I can control and is localized in my code). Should be displaying in a localized format. I have tried stepping through the code to see exactly where the validation is failing, but it seems to be happening inside some of the compiled MVC or DataAnnotations code that I cannot see.   I'm developing a JSF 2.0 application on Glassfish v3 and i'm trying to handle the ViewExpiredException. But whatever i do, i always get a Glassfish error report instead of my own error page. To simulate the occurrence of the VEE, i inserted the following function into my backing bean, which fires the VEE. I'm triggering this function from my JSF page through a commandLink. • How to create an array of User Objects in Powerbuilder?

  The application has many different windows. One is a single 'row' window, which relates to a single row of data in a table, say 'Order'. Another is a 'multiple row' datawindow, where each row in the datawindow relates to a row in 'Order', used for spreadsheet-like data entry Functionality extentions have create a detail table, say 'Suppliers', where an order may require multiple suppliers to fill the order. Normally, suppliers are not required, because they are already in the warehouse (0), or there may need to be an order to a supplier to complete an order (1), or multiple suppliers may need to be contacted (more than one). As a single order is entered, once the items are entered, a User Object is populated depending on the status of the items in the warehouse. If required, this creates a 1-to-many relationship between the order and the "backorder". In the PB side, there is a single object uo_backorder which is created on the window, and is referenced by the window depending on the command (button popup, save, etc) I have been tasked to create the 'backorder' functionality on the spreadsheet-line window. Previously the default options for backorders were used when orders were created from the multiple-row window. A workaround already exists where unconfirmed orders could be opened in the single-row window, and the backorder information manipulated there. However, the userbase wants this functionality on the one window. Since the functionality of uo_backorder already exists, I assumed I could just copy the code from the single-order window, but create an array of uo_backorder objects to cope with multiple rows. It is associating the visual object placed on the face of the main window to each array cell, so anytime I reference the array cell object it's actually referencing the one original object, not the new instances that I (thought) I was creating. If I change the code iuo_backorders[ll_count+1] = create uo_backorder the code doesn't run, saying that it failed to initalize the popup window. I think this is related to the class being called the same thing as the instance. What I want to end up with is an array of uo_backorder objects that I can associate to each row of my datawindow (first row = first cell, etc). I think the issue lays in the fact it's a visual object, and I can't seem to get the window to run without adding a dummy object on the face of the window (functionality from the original single-row window). Since it's a VISUAL object, does the object indeed need to be embedded on the windowface for the window to know what object I'm talking about? If so, how does one create multiple windowface objects (one to many, depending on when a row is added)? Don't hesitate to inquire regarding any more information this issue may require from myself. I have no idea what is 'standard' or 'default' in PB, or what is custom and needs more explaining.

• Launching Intent.ACTION_VIEW intent not working on saved image file

I am creating the "mutable" bitmap after seeing someone using it and it seems to work better than without it. And i am using the parse method on the Uri class and not the fromFile because in my code i am calling these in different places and when i am creating the intent i have a string path instead of a file. Now for my problem. The file gets created. The intent launches a dialog asking me to select a viewer. I have 3 viewers installed. The Astro image viewer, the default media gallery (i have a milstone on 2.1 but on the milestone the 2.1 update did not include the 3d gallery so it's the old one) and the 3d gallery from the nexus one (i found the apk in the wild). Now when i launch the 3 viewers the following happen: Astro image viewer: The activity launches but i see nothing but a black screen. Media Gallery: i get an exception dialog shown "The application Media Gallery (process com.motorola.gallery) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again" with a force close option. 3D gallery: Everything works as it should. When i try to simply open the file using the Astro file manager (browse to it and simply click) i get the same option dialog but this time things are different: Astro image viewer: Everything works as it should. Media Gallery: Everything works as it should. 3D gallery: The activity launches but i see nothing but a black screen. As you can see everything is a complete mess. I have no idea why this happens but it happens like this every single time. It's not a random bug. Am i missing something when i am creating the intent? Or when i am creating the image file? Any ideas?

  Hi, I am trying to deploy an ear file to JBOSS AS (defalut server). The application is the mavenised version of examples of SeamInAction book. When I copy the file to $JBOSS_HOME/server/default/deploy, I don't get any exception but the application doesn't respond, after some time trying to access the application from the browser gives following in the log...
