• Serializing a part of object graph

  Hi all, I have a problem regarding Java custom serialization. I have a graph of objects and want to configure where to stop when I serialize a root object from client to server. Let's make it a bit concrete, clear by giving a sample scenario. I have Classes of type Company Employee (abstract) Manager extends Employee Secretary extends Employee Analyst extends Employee Project Here are the relations: Company(1)---(n)Employee Manager(1)---(n)Project Analyst(1)---(n)Project Imagine, I'm on the client side and I want to create a new company, assign it 10 employees (new or some existing) and send this new company to the server. What I expect in this scenario is to serialize the company and all bounding employees to the server side, because I'll save the relations on the database. So far no problem, since the default Java serialization mechanism serializes the whole object graph, excluding the field which are static or transient. My goal is about the following scenario. Imagine, I loaded a company and its 1000 employees from the server to the client side. Now I only want to rename the company's name (or some other field, that directly belongs to the company) and update this record. This time, I want to send only the company object to the server side and not the whole list of employees (I just update the name, the employees are in this use case irrelevant). My aim also includes the configurability of saying, transfer the company AND the employees but not the Project-Relations, you must stop there. Do you know any possibility of achieving this in a generic way, without implementing the writeObject, readObject for every single Entity-Object? What would be your suggestions? I would really appreciate your answers. I'm open to any ideas and am ready to answer your questions in case something is not clear.

• PulpCore OGG music playback - can't loop as soon as I animate the musicVolume property

  I have been experimenting with PulpCore for about a week or so and I am enjoying it very much but today I ran into a problem that I can't quite figure out. Sound bgMusic = Sound.load("music/music.ogg"); Playback musicPlayback; ... musicVolume = new Fixed(0.75); musicPlayback = bgMusic.loop(musicVolume); //TODO figure out why it's NOT looping when volume is animated // musicVolume.animate(0, musicVolume.get(), FADE_IN_TIME); This code, for as long as the last line is commented out, plays the music.ogg again and again in an endless loop (which I can stop by calling stop on the Playback object returned from loop(). However, I would like the music to fade in smoothly, so following the advice of the PulpCore API docs, I added the last line which will create the fade-in but the music will only play once and then stop. I wonder why is that? Here is a bit of the documentation: Playback pulpcore.sound.Sound.loop(Fixed level) Loops this sound clip with the specified volume level (0.0 to 1.0). The level may have a property animation attached. Parameters: level Returns: a Playback object for this unique sound playback (one Sound can have many simultaneous Playback objects) or null if the sound could not be played. So what could be the problem? I repeat, with the last line, the sound fades in but doesn't loop, without it it loops but starts with the specified 0.75 volume level.

• setlocale to fr-FR in PHP and number formatting

  Hi, I am trying to create a French version of one of my sites. I have set setlocale(LC_ALL, 'fr_FR'); at the top of my page, and using strftime I am displaying dates correctly in the French style. However I am having some problems with a number. Part of the page uses data I am getting from a Web Service. I am assigning a returned value to a var like this: $overallRating = $returnArray['Overall']; I am then using the following code later to format it to 1 decimal place number_format($overallRating,1) In the English version the overallRating value might be 7.5 and returns a value such as 7.5 (the reason for running it through the number_format is if it returns 7 I want it to display 7.0) However in the French version if I print out the raw $overallRating value I get 7,5 which looks like it has translated it into french. This would be fine but if I run it through number_format I get the error: Notice: A non well formed numeric value encountered in /sites/index.php on line 250 Line 250 is the number_format line I presume the translation to 7,5 is messing it up, but not sure how to solve this... Using PHP 5.3 in case there is anything new that helps me

• Cocoa-Created PDF Not Rendering Correctly

  I've created a PDF on the iPad, but the problem is when you have a line of text greater than 1 line, the content just goes off the page. However the black rectangle is partially see through since its transparency is set to 20%, therefore it should appear in red, but of a darker red than the rectangle sitting under since it is actually a faded black item. Some rendering problem occurs because of the last line of code that sets the opacity of the containing AbsolutePanel to 100% (which in theory should not affect the visual result). Indeed in that case the panel lying over remains still see through but straight through the background colour of the page! It's like if the panel sitting under was not there at all... Any ideas? This is under GWT 2.0 and IE7.

  I'm coming from a C++ background, so be kind on my n00bish queries... I'd like to read data from an input file and store it in a stringstream. I can accomplish this in an easy way in C++ using stringstreams. I'm a bit lost trying to do the same in Java. Following is a crude code/way I've developed where I'm storing the data read line-by-line in a string array. I need to use a string stream to capture my data into (rather than use a string array).. • How can I optimize this or is there a better way to do it?(HTML Syntax Highlighter)

  Hello every one, I have made a HTML syntax highlighter in C# and it works great, but there's one problem. First off It runs pretty fast because it syntax highlights line by line, but when I paste more than one line of code or open a file I have to highlight the whole file which can take up to a minute for a file with only 150 lines of code. I tried just highlighting visible lines in the richtextbox but then when I try to scroll I can't it to highlight the new visible text. • Dealing with Imprecise Drawing in CAD Drawing

  I have a CAD application, that allows user to draw lines and polygons and all that. One thorny problem that I face is user drawing can be highly imprecise, for example, a user might want to draw two rectangles that are connected to each other. Hence there should be one line shared by two rectangles. However, it's easy for user to, instead of draw a line, draw two lines that are very close to each other, so close to each other that when look from the screen, you would be mistaken that they are the same line, except that they aren't when you zoom in a little bit. My application would require user to properly draw the lines ( or my preprocessing must be able to do auto correction), or else my internal algorithm would not be able to process the inputs correctly. What is the best strategy to combat this kind of problem? I am thinking about rounding the point coordinates to a certain degree of precision, but although I can't exactly pinpoint the problem of this approach, but I feel that this is not the correct way of doing things, that this will introduce a new set of problem. Any idea?

• Python access an object byref / Need tagging

  I need to suck data from stdin and create a object. The incoming data is between 5 and 10 lines long. Each line has a process number and either an IP address or a hash. For example: pid=123 ip=192.168.0.1 - some data pid=123 hash=ABCDEF0123 - more data hash=ABCDEF123 - More data ip=192.168.0.1 - even more data I need to put this data into a class like: class MyData(): pid = None hash = None ip = None lines = [] I need to be able to look up the object by IP, HASH, or PID. The tough part is that there are multiple streams of data intermixed coming from stdin. (There could be hundreds or thousands of processes writing data at the same time.) I have regular expressions pulling out the PID, IP, and HASH that I need, but how can I access the object by any of those values? My thought was to do something like this: myarray = {} for each line in sys.stdin.readlines(): if pid and ip: #If we can get a PID out of the line myarray[pid] = MyData().pid = pid #Create a new MyData object, assign the PID, and stick it in myarray accessible by PID. myarray[pid].ip = ip #Add the IP address to the new object myarray[pid].lines.append(data) #Append the data myarray[ip] = myarray[pid] #Take the object by PID and create a key from the IP. <snip>do something similar for pid and hash, hash and ip, etc...</snip> This gives my an array with two keys (a PID and an IP) and they both point to the same object. But on the next iteration of the loop, if I find (for example) an IP and HASH and do: myarray[hash] = myarray[ip] The following is False: myarray[hash] == myarray[ip] Hopefully that was clear. I hate to admit that waaay back in the VB days, I remember being able handle objects byref instead of byval. Is there something similar in Python? Or am I just approaching this wrong?

• "Link" against a SWC in Flex

  I'm trying to do a very simple app in Flash/Flex, that loads an image embedded in the swf itself and then shows it. The thing is I'm trying to do it using the command line only (mxmlc and compc) and without using @Embed, and failing miserably. I'm using compc to put the png inside a swc : compc --include-file icon_big.png icon_big.png -output assets.swc This generates a 17 kb assets.swf, slightly bigger than icon_big.png. Then I try to compile and link Main.as : mxmlc -include-libraries+=assets.swc Main.as This produces a 944 byte Main.swf, which clearly doesn't include the asset, and fails at runtime. According to the mxmlc docs I found, -include-libraries should link with every class, including the ones not directly referenced by code (as is the case here, since I'm getting the class from code), and it unsurprisingly fails at runtime. Note that this same code (or, more precisely, quite equivalent code) works when used within a Flash project - I'm not looking to fix the code, but how to do in the command line whatever Flash does internally. I feel I'm just "not getting" something... any clues?

If I could get the guestbook app to function, then I might be able to get a grip on what's going on. As it is, I seem to fix one problem only to find another round the next corner.

  I'm trying to use Cmockery to mock C functions called from C++ code. Because the SUT is in C++, my tests need to be in C++. When I use the Cmockery expect_string() macro like this: expect_string(mock_function, url, "Foo"); I get: my_tests.cpp: In function ‘void test_some_stuff(void**)’: my_tests.cpp:72: error: invalid conversion from ‘void*’ to ‘const char*’ my_tests.cpp:72: error: initializing argument 5 of ‘void _expect_string(const char*, const char*, const char*, int, const char*, int)’ I see in cmockery.h that expect_string is defined: #define expect_string(function, parameter, string) \ expect_string_count(function, parameter, string, 1) #define expect_string_count(function, parameter, string, count) \ _expect_string(#function, #parameter, __FILE__, __LINE__, (void*)string, \ count) And here's the prototype for _expect_string (from cmockery.h): void _expect_string( const char* const function, const char* const parameter, const char* const file, const int line, const char* string, const int count); I believe the problem is that I'm compiling C code as C++, so the C++ compiler is objecting to (void*)string in the expect_string_count macro being passed as the const char* string parameter to the _expect_string() function. I've already used extern "C" around the cmockery.h include in my_tests.cpp like this: extern "C" { #include <cmockery.h> } ...in order to get around name-mangling problems. (See "How do I compile and link C++ code with compiled C code?") Is there a command-line option or some other means of telling g++ how to relax its restrictions on typecasting from my test's C++ code to the C function in cmockery.c? • How do I find Microsoft APIs?

  I'm a java programmer, and if I see something that: I don't know about or just want to find a method description without opening an ide or am on support I type java [classname] into google, and there it is. If I try this crazy stunt for C# I'll come up with a whole heap of tutorials (how do I use it etc). If I manage to get to MSDN, I have to wade through a page describing every .net technology to see how their syntax references the same object, and then I have to find the appropriate page from there ([class name] Constructor) for example. This is even more pronounced, because I don't have Visual Studio, so I've got nothing to make it easier. There must be something I'm missing or don't know... how does this situation work for Microsoft developers? how can I make my life easier/searches better? are there techniques that work no matter what computer I'm on (e.g. require no computer setup/downloads) Notes It could be thought that java is just "java", but it's just that the java apis are only referenced/defined in the core language. For all the other languages on the JVM, it's assumed that you will just learn the correct syntax to use the java apis. I presume that .Net only lists a whole heap of languages as the api classes are actually different and have different interfaces capabilities (or some approximation of this presumption). Edit While searching msdn works... in the java space I can type 'java [anyclass]' and it will generally be found... whether it's a java core api or a third party library

• C# TcpClient, getting back the entire response from a telnet device

  I'm writing a configuration tool for a device that can communicate via telnet. The tool sends a command via TcpClient.GetStream().Write(...), and then checks for the device response via TcpClient.GetStream().ReadByte(). This works fine in unit tests or when I'm stepping through code slowly. If I run the config tool such that it performs multiple commands consecutively, then the behavior of the read is inconsistent. By inconsistent I mean sometimes the data is missing, incomplete or partially garbled. So even though the device performed the operation and responded, my code to check for the response was unreliable. I "fixed" this problem by adding a Thread.Sleep to make sure the read method waits long enough for the device to complete its job and send back the whole response (in this case 1.5 seconds was a safe amount). • Does Java 6 open a default port for JMX remote connections?

  My specific question has to do with JMX as used in JDK 1.6: if I am running a Java process using JRE 1.6 with com.sun.management.jmxremote in the command line, does Java pick a default port for remote JMX connections? Backstory: I am currently trying to develop a procedure to give to a customer that will enable them to connect to one of our processes via JMX from a remote machine. The goal is to facillitate their remote debugging of a situation occurring on a real-time display console. Because of their service level agreement, they are strongly motivated to capture as much data as possible and, if the situation looks too complicated to fix quickly, to restart the display console and allow it to reconnect to the server-side. I am aware the I could run jconsole on JDK 1.6 processes and jvisualvm on post-JDK 1.6.7 processes given physical access to the console. However, because of the operational requirements and people problems involved, we are strongly motivated to grab the data that we need remotely and get them up and running again. EDIT: I am aware of the command line port property com.sun.management.jmxremote.port=portNum The question that I am trying to answer is, if you do not set that property at the command line, does Java pick another port for remote monitoring? If so, how could you determine what it might be?

• HighCharts : Can I customize the colors of individual series?

  I am using HighCharts for a line graph and i am attemping to change the line color for each series. I did find this example here but the data is hard coded. • Java split giving opposite order of arabic characters

  I am splitting the following string using \\| in java (android) using the IntelliJ 12 IDE. Everything is fine except the last part, somehow the split picks them up in the opposite order : As you can see the real positioning 34,35,36 is correct and according to the string, but when it gets picked out into split part no 5 its in the wrong order, 36,35,34 ... Any way I can get them to be in the right order? • How to access and run field events from extension js?

  I have an extension that helps in submitting forms automatically for a process at work. We are running into a problem with dual select boxes where one option is selected and then that selection changes another field's options. Since setting an option selected property to true doesn't trigger the field's onchange event I am trying to do so through code. The problem I've run into is that if I try to access or run functions on the field object from the extension, I get the error Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "Component is not available" nsresult: "0x80040111 (NS_ERROR_NOT_AVAILABLE)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://webformsidebar/content/webformsidebar.js :: WebFormSidebar_FillProcess :: line 499" data: no] the line causing the error is... if (typeof thisField.onchange === 'function') The line right before it works just fine... thisField.options[t].selected=true; ...so I'm not sure why this is resulting in such an error. What surprises me most I guess is that checking for the existence of the function leads to an error. It feels like the problem is related to the code running in the context of the extension instead of the browser window document. If so, is there any way to call a function in the browser window context instead? Do I need to actually inject code into the page somehow? Any other ideas? Thanks
