  • 'abstract class' versus 'normal class' for a reusable library

    I'm developing a reusable library and have been creating abstract classes, so the client can then extend from these. QUESTION: Is there any reason in fact I should use an abstract class here as opposed to just a normal class? Note - Have already decided I do not want to use interfaces as I want to include actual default methods in my library so the client using it doesn't have to write the code.

  • Most idiomatic way to print a time difference in Java?

    I'm familiar with printing time difference in milliseconds: long time = System.currentTimeMillis(); //do something that takes some time... long completedIn = System.currentTimeMillis() - time(); But, is there a nice way print a complete time in a specified format (eg: HH:MM:SS) either using Apache Commons or even the dreaded platform API's Date/Time objects? In other words, what is the shortest, simplest, no nonsense way to write this in Java?

    I want to be notified when a build has been completed\failed in visual studio and I DO NOT want to use pre\post build steps, I want an external process or VS plugin that will count the number of builds.     Hi all - I'm attempting to write a Python wrapper for poker-eval, a c static library. All the documentation I can find on ctypes indicates that it works on shared/dynamic libraries. Is there a ctypes for static libraries? I know about cython, but should I use that or recompile the poker-eval into a dynamic library so that I can use ctypes? Thanks, Mike

  • How to access Java servlet running on my PC from outside ?

    I used Netbeans6.7 to write a servlet, when it runs, it opens a browser window with this address : http://localhost:8080/My_App/Test_Servlet, I replaced the "localhost" with my IP address, now it looks like this : http://192.???.1.??:8080/My_App/Test_Servlet, but I tried to access it from another computer outside my home, it can't read anything, I wonder if I need to change Windows Fire Wall setting to allow outside traffic, it's a Paypal IPN app, so I call Paypal, they said they can't access : http://192.???.1.??:8080/My_App/Test_Servlet What on my side should I do to allow traffic from "paypal.com" to access "My_App/Test_Servlet" ?   • Access external xml using xslt document function return 401

    On MOSS2007, I have a webpart that display the content of a xml feed. I use a xslt with parameters for transforamtions. There is a situation when I receive a 401 Authorisation exception. I realize that this happen when a document() function from my xslt try to open an external xml. If I try to open this xml in browser all work ok. I provided my admin credentials to the web part and to the XmlSecureResolver. Same problem. The webpart is on server1 and the xml feed and external xml required by xslt is on server2.     I am trying to write a function to post form data and save returned cookie info in a file so that the next time the page is visited, the cookie information is sent to the server (i.e. normal browser behavior). I wrote this relatively easily in C++ using curlib, but have spent almost an entire day trying to write this in Python, using urllib2 - and still no success.     I have to fetch all the files from a folder and i am using the function GetFiles() like string[] dirImages = Directory.GetFiles(strPathYearImages + intYear , "*.png"); where strPathYearImages="Images\Holiday\2010\" but when i write the whole path like string[] dirImages = Directory.GetFiles(@"E:\IWP\Images\Holiday\"+ intYear , "*.png"); i get the required result.   • Experienced developer trying to get outsourcing contract with current client.

    I work for a major bank as a contract software developer. I've been there a few months, and without exception this place has the worst software practices I've ever seen. The software my team makes has no formal testing, terrible code (not reusable, hard to read, etc), minimal documentation, no defined development process and an absolutely sickening amount of waste due to bureaucratic overhead. Part of my contract is to maintain a group of thousands of very poorly written batch jobs. When one of the jobs fails (read: crashes), it's a developers job to look at the source, figure out what's wrong, fix it, and check it in. There is no quality assurance process or auditing of the results whatsoever. Once the developer says "it works" a manager signs off and it goes into production. What's disturbing is that these jobs essentially grab market data and put it into a third-party risk management system, which provides the bank with critical intelligence. I've discovered the disturbing truth that this has been happening since the 90s and nobody really has evidence the system is getting the correct data! Without going into details, an issue arose on Friday that was so horrible I actually stormed out of the place. I was ready to quit, but I decided to just get out to calm my nerves and possibly go back Monday. I've been reflecting today on how to handle this. I have realized that, in probably less than 6 months, I could (with 2 other developers) remake a large component of this system. The new system would provide them with, as primary benefits, a maintainable codebase less prone to error and a solid QA framework. To do it properly I would have to be outside the bank, the internal bureaucracy is just too much. And moreover, I think a bank is fundamentally not a place that can make good software. This is my plan. Write a report explaining in depth all the problems with their current system Explain why their software practices fail and generate a tremendous amount of error and waste. Use this as the basis for claiming the project must be developed externally. Write a high level development plan, including what resources I will require Hand 1,2,3 to my manager, hopefully he passes it up the chain. Worst case he fires me, but this isn't so bad. Convinced Executive decides to award my company a contract for the new system I have 8 years experience as a software contractor and have delivered my share of successful software products, but all working in-house for small/medium sized companies. When I read this over, I think I have a dynamite plan. But since this is the first time doing something this bold so I have my doubts. My question is, is this a good idea? If you think not, please spare no detail.

    I have identified the query constructs my users normally use. would it make sense for me to create composite indexes to support those constructs and provide FIRST_ROWS capability? If I migrate from SE to IDS, I will loose the ability to write low-level functions with c-isam calls, but gain FIRST_ROWS along with other goodies like: SET-READS for index scans (onconfig USE_[KO]BATCHEDREAD), optimizer directives, parallel queries, etc?
