• What are the default/recommendet access rights for %ALLUSERSPROFILE%?

  We have a Windows application that reads and writes some data for all users. We place it at %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\OurProgram*.* We now encounter a few cases in larger companies, where users do not have write permission to %ALLUSERSPROFILE%. Most of these cases are running Windows 7. The problem does not occur on a normal desktop installation of Windows 7 though. What is the recommended policy for this location? I have not found any "official" information about this. Is there a different location where all users have write permission?

• HP 4530s: Fan is Always On even When Laptop/CPU is Idle

  Just bought an HP 4530s from newegg. Laptop is great, but.. The FAN is always on. I did some googling, found it is a known problem, but no easily googlable solution. Tried to: Update BIOS to the latest Disable "CPU fan always on when plugged in" BIOS setting Installed Windows 7 Home (came with), Live CDed Ubuntu, Windows XP Spent 2 hours with horrible HP support Some other things that I can't already recall = spent too much time on it Laptop is not refundable (learned it the hard way, after the fact, by looking at the NEWEGG clever policy that is hidden in "details") I would really appreciate a workable solution / workaround / hack. The laptop is for my friend who will most likely be running Windows XP/7.

• How can I recover my Transcend pendrive when both the used space and free space are 0 bytes?

  I have an Transcend pendrive, and when I connect it and double click it to explore, it is showing the error: Please insert a disk into drive Also In the properties field it is showing File system- Unknown Used space- 0 bytes free space- 0 bytes capacity- 0 bytes I tried to format it using using the command prompt but it is not showing in the list disk command. It is also not showing in the Disk Management.

• I accidentally made my new hard drive (the non system drive) my primary partition

  Hi all, When installing a new hard drive, I accidentally formatted it using 'Disk Management' and set it up as my primary active partition, even though it isn't the system drive. Then, when I restarted my machine, Windows wouldn't boot, citing a missing or corrupt SYSTEM folder. Can anyone help me re-enable the system hard drive as my primary active partition? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• sql user not associated with a trusted connection

  just setup a new server with sql server express 2005. (want to connect remotely) I set logins both windows and sql I modified so both local and remote connections are allowed I restarted the server windows firewall is not connected. (have an external firewall with a hole at port 1443) user account is active, no password policy or forcing to change on next login etc. If I even try to connect using this username locally on the server using 'file | connect to object explorer' I get the same message that the user is not associated to a trusted connection.

• Member of local Administrators group cannot elevate

  Hi We have just installed the first Windows 7 (professional) workstation in our domain. Its primary user has been added to the local (computer's) Administrators group (computername\Administrators). Still, whenever elevation is needed, his credentials are not accepted, and he is never allowed to act as an administrator. For example, he cannot write a file to C:\ (not that he needs to, but it illustrates the problem). Putting him in the domain's Administrators group doesn't help either (anyway we'd rather not do that). I suspect that he may be the victim of some policy that controls elevation, but can't seem to find it. Can anyone shed some light?

• SQL Server Logs: missing date ranges

  I need to be able to export SQL Server logs into CSV files, which I can easily do with the export function. However in doing so I've noticed there's a range of dates missing from the SQL Server logs in Management Studio, two months actually. I'm wondering where these logs might be found, and if it's possible to reload them so I can view and then export them. They're strictly for informational purposes, but I do need them. • Moving to an outside Exchange provider - How to create new Outlook profile on multiple PCs?

  Following an acquisition we are switching from our local Exchange to an outside provider. I need to change account settings / create new profile so that users are able to access their new mailbox, and I hate the idea of doing it manually on every single client. I have tried quick and dirty solution with copying profile information from Registry on one computer to the other, hoping that I could fix user info later. Quite obviously, this didn't work: Outlook recognized the profile, I could select it at the application startup, but there the fun ends - the profile was corrupt. I couldn't change settings in Mail settings on Control panel, either. Didn't find any Group policy solution. Is there any application, script or other solution, that would help me save time commuting from one PC to the other and typing the same info over and over again?

  I tried to override the <legacyImpersonationPolicy> Element, so a single application, will enable this policy (which is necessary, since this application breaks if disabled). • Download of ~100MB file from Joomla + Docman component is incomplete (sometimes)

  Hi, I hope this is right place for this. I am currently running Joomla v1 with a file management component called Docman on a Bluehost server. Some users (particularly with slower download speeds) are experiencing partial file downloads with some of my larger files (~100MB). I would like to keep the Joomla + Docman installation. My users can use autocomplete when they are on other websites so I think it is a server setting in this case. How do I turn autocomplete on for a server running Windows Server 2008? • How can I restrict the backuppc client user as much as possible? (rsync)

  I have backuppc making full backups of servers, but I'd like to be sure that my set up is as paranoid as possible. BackupPC is set up to backup via rsync, and it is set up to use a specific user on each client to be backed up. Because the backuppc client user has to have access to every file on the client machine and the ability to ssh into the machine without an interactive password, I'm a little nervous about securing the clients, and I'd like to know I haven't overlooked any options. Here's what I have in place: in the client user's authorized_keys file, i've included from="IPTOSERVER",command="/usr/bin/rsync" before the user's public key, so that the user can only login coming from the BackupPC server. Next, in the sudoers file, I've added this line: backuppc ALL=NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/rsync to allow root-level permissions only for the rsync command for that user. Are there other user, policy, or ssh restrictions that I can add while still allowing the backup pc client user to rsync all files?

So we're left with little choice (?) but to consider opening up our SVN servers. • How to allow simple file sharing on Windows Server 2008R2 through VPN

  We are a small, distributed company with a Windows Server 2008R2 installation. I would like to set up a way for our employees to connect securely to this server via VPN and then be able to map a network drive. I have gotten this to work somewhat by installing the Network Policy and Access Services Role on the server and using the default settings. I have also created a network share on the server. The problem is that our connectivity is sporadic (sometimes the service stops listening on the port or simply refuses to authorize correct credentials) and slow. I can always connect through VPN, but mapping is problematic. I would be grateful for the answer on how to accomplish this as well as some guidance on whether I am on the right track. • Sun OS 5.10 not honoring .hushlogin

  I scp and ssh a zillion times a day, and because of our corporate policy I can't get rid of /etc/issue or /etc/motd on the destination machines. So whereas I just want to see the results of my scp or ssh, all I ever end up seeing is thousands of copies of the motd. .hushlogin doesn't seem to be honored. Any other ideas on how to get rid of the message display? Is there some sshd config setting I don't know about (though I probably couldn't change that either)? Is there some curiously sunos/solaris specific way to achieve the goal?

Yousendit offers a service like what I am looking for, but it does not make sense to use their service if I already have a web server. Is there an open source version of Yousendit that I can run on my own web server? What is this type of software or service called? (calling it an FTP Server does not seem to fit)

• When RDP as a Domain User, Smart Card Requested

  My W8 machine is connected to domain zen. If I rdp to the W8 machine, I can log in as a local user without problems. If I try to log in as a domain user, I am prompted for a smart card instead of a password. Any ideas why? Note that Interactive login: require smart card is disabled in group policy: And here is the output from rsop.msc: Some additional information on this one. If my connecting machine is on the same domain/network as the W8 machine, then I am prompted for a password as usual. If the machine is remote, on a different domain, then I am prompted for a smart card. In addition, the machine I am connecting from that gets the smartcard prompt is an XP box. I haven't isolated exactly which of these factors triggers the different response.

• WSUS Looping 2 updates on 2003 servers

  Good afternoon, Hopefully I can articulate this so that people understand my problem. We have WSUS on windows server 2008. We have 8 Windows 2003 servers. There is an update ready to install KB2982792. We install it then it says there is another update to install KB2728973. Then it says there is another update to install, again KB2982792. This goes on and on. Talked to microsoft support and they confirmed that the update was infact installed and applied to the computer (Checking untrusted certifactions confirmed that for these updates) and their suggestion was to just "Hide update". This is fine except on the WSUS server it still shows failed updates which is not okay with our policy. I'm here to ask for help figuring this out and what I can do to trouble shoot it. • Why isn't Adobe software multilingual?

  I work in a design studio with several non-native English speakers (in this case, into Japanese and Chinese). I have installed the latest Creative Suite (CS5) on our mac stations and was once again disappointed that unlike so many modern software packages there is still no option to change the language of the software. Most of the team has been good enough to work on their English, but it would be much more helpful for them to work in their native language. Why does Adobe continue to require separate licenses based on language? Are they operating under the assumption that only a single language is ever spoken in any given country? Are there any other third party options or does Adobe at least have some sort of statement regarding this policy?

• How to open a server port outside of an OpenVPN tunnel with a pf firewall on OSX (BSD)

  I have a Mac mini that I use as a media server running XBMC and serves media from my NAS to my stereo and TV (which has been color calibrated with a Spyder3Express, happy). The Mac runs OSX 10.8.2 and the internet connection is tunneled for general privacy over OpenVPN through Tunnelblick. I believe my anonymous VPN provider pushes "redirect_gateway" to OpenVPN/Tunnelblick because when on it effectively tunnels all non-LAN traffic in- and outbound. As an unwanted side effect that also opens the boxes server ports unprotected to the outside world and bypasses my firewall-router (Netgear SRX5308). I have run nmap from outside the LAN on the VPN IP and the server ports on the mini are clearly visible and connectable. The mini has the following ports open: ssh/22, ARD/5900 and 8080+9090 for the XBMC iOS client Constellation. I also have Synology NAS which apart from LAN file serving over AFP and WebDAV only serves up an OpenVPN/1194 and a PPTP/1732 server. When outside of the LAN I connect to this from my laptop over OpenVPN and over PPTP from my iPhone. I only want to connect through AFP/548 from the mini to the NAS. The border firewall (SRX5308) just works excellently, stable and with a very high throughput when streaming from various VOD services. My connection is a 100/10 with a close to theoretical max throughput. The ruleset is as follows Inbound: PPTP/1723 Allow always to 10.0.0.40 (NAS/VPN server) from a restricted IP range >corresponding to possible cell provider range OpenVPN/1194 Allow always to 10.0.0.40 (NAS/VPN server) from any Outbound: Default outbound policy: Allow Always OpenVPN/1194 TCP Allow always from 10.0.0.40 (NAS) to a.b.8.1-a.b.8.254 (VPN provider) OpenVPN/1194 UDP Allow always to 10.0.0.40 (NAS) to a.b.8.1-a.b.8.254 (VPN provider) Block always from NAS to any On the Mini I have disabled the OSX Application Level Firewall because it throws popups which don't remember my choices from one time to another and that's annoying on a media server. Instead I run Little Snitch which controls outgoing connections nicely on an application level. (until you tell me otherwise :) 1) Full LAN access to the above ports on the mini/media server (including through my own VPN server) 2) All internet traffic from the mini/media server is anonymized and tunneled over VPN 3) If OpenVPN/Tunnelblick on the mini drops the connection, nothing is leaked both because of pf and the router outgoing ruleset. It can't even do a DNS lookup through the router. So what do I have to hide with all this? Nothing much really, I just got carried away trying to stop port scans through the VPN tunnel :) In any case this setup works perfectly and it is very stable. The Problem at last! I want to run a minecraft server and I installed that on a separate user account on the mini server (user=mc) to keep things partitioned. I don't want this server accessible through the anonymized VPN tunnel because there are lots more port scans and hacking attempts through that than over my regular IP and I don't trust java in general. So I added the following pf rule on the mini: ### Allow Minecraft public through user mc pass in on $eth_if proto {tcp,udp} from any to any port 24983 user mc pass out on $eth_if proto {tcp, udp} from any to any user mc And these additions on the border firewall: Inbound: Allow always TCP/UDP from any to 10.0.0.40 (NAS) Outbound: Allow always TCP port 80 from 10.0.0.40 to any (needed for online account checkups) This works fine but only when the OpenVPN/Tunnelblick tunnel is down. When up no connection is possbile to the minecraft server from outside of LAN. inside LAN is always OK. Everything else functions as intended. I believe the redirect_gateway push is close to the root of the problem, but I want to keep that specific VPN provider because of the fantastic throughput, price and service. The Solution? How can I open up the minecraft server port outside of the tunnel so it's only available over en0 not the VPN tunnel? Should I a static route? But I don't know which IPs will be connecting...stumbles How secure would to estimate this setup to be and do you have other improvements to share? I've searched extensively in the last few days to no avail...If you've read this far I bet you know the answer :)

• Windows 7 is blocking ports

  I am trying to open port 80 and 3690 for HTTP and svnserve respectively. I have Windows Firewall off, and have tried temporarily disabling Mcafee VirusScan Enterprise, to no avail. According to http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/, both ports 80 and 3690 are still blocked. I can't think of what would be blocking them if Windows Firewall and my antivirus are disabled. I know that since Windows Firewall is off, this output might not be useful, but I figured I'd include it just in case, haha.

• ASA 5540 v8.4(3) vpn to ASA 5505 v8.2(5), tunnel up but I cant ping from 5505 to IP on other side

  I am having problems pinging from a 5505(remote) to IP 10.160.70.10 in the network behind the 5540(HQ side). 5505 inside IP: 10.56.0.1 Out: 71.43.109.226 5540 Inside: 10.1.0.8 out: 64.129.214.27 I Can ping from 5540 to 5505 inside 10.56.0.1. I also ran ASDM packet tracer in both directions, it is ok from 5540 to 5505, but drops the packet from 5505 to 5540. It gets through the ACL and dies at the NAT. Here is the 5505 config, I am sure it is something simple I am missing.
