• Introducing NFakeMail

  Ever had to resort to custom code to control emails sent by an application during integration and/or system testing? If you answered yes then you should definitely continue reading. NFakeMail makes it easier for developers to do integration/system testing on software that sends emails by providing a fake SMTP server. You’ll no longer have to manually validate the email sending process. It’s developed in C# and IronPython and targets the .NET 4.0 framework. With NFakeMail you can easily automate the testing of components that rely on sending mails while doing its job. Let’s take a look at some sample code, we start with a simple class containing a method that sends emails. class Notifier { public void Notify() { using (var smtpClient = new SmtpClient("localhost", 10025)) { smtpClient.Send("[email protected]", "[email protected]", "S1", "."); smtpClient.Send("[email protected]", "[email protected]", "S2", ".."); } } } Then to automate the tests for this method we only need to the following: [Test] public void Notify_T001() { using (var server = new FakeSmtpServer(10025)) { new Notifier().Notify(); // Verifies two messages are received in the next five seconds var messages = server.WaitForMessages(count: 2, timeout: 5000); // Verifies the message sender Debug.Assert(messages.All(m => m.From.Address == "[email protected]")); } } The created FakeSmtpServer instance will act as a simple SMTP server and intercept the messages sent by the Notifier class. It’s even possible to verify some fields of each intercepted message and by default all intercepted messages are saved to the file system in MIME format.

• Should we be able to deploy a single package to the SSIS Catalog?

  My buddy Sutha Thiru sent me an email recently asking about my opinion on a particular nuance of the project deployment model in SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) 2012 and I’d like to share my response as I think it warrants a wider discussion. Sprint 2 Pkg 4 & 5 been developed. During this time users raised a bug on Pkg2. We want to make the change to Pkg2 and deploy that to UAT and eventually to LIVE without releasing Pkg 4 &5. How do we do it? I steadfastly believe that there should not be a way for an unscrupulous developer to slide in a new version of a package under the covers. Deploying .ispac files brings a degree of rigour to your operational processes. Yes, that means that we as SSIS developers are going to have to get better at using source control and branching properly but that is no bad thing in my opinion. Claiming to be proper "developers" is a bit of a cheap claim if we don't even do the fundamentals correctly. I would be interested in the thoughts of others who have used the project deployment model. Do you agree with my point of view? @Jamiet

• 7u45 Caller-Allowable-Codebase and Trusted-Library

  Java 7 update 45 (October 2013) changed the interactions between JavaScript and Java Applets made through LiveConnect. The 7u45 update is a critical patch update that has also raised the security baseline and users are strongly recommended to upgrade. Versions below the security baseline used to apply the Trusted-Library Manifest attribute to call between sandboxed code and higher-privileged code. The Trusted-Library value was a Boolean true or false. Security changes for the current security baseline (7u45) introduced a different Caller-Allowable-Codebase that indicates precisely where these LiveConnect calls can originate. For example, LiveConnect calls should not necessarily originate from 3rd party components of a web page or other DOM-based browser manipulations (pdf). Additional information about these can be located at “JAR File Manifest Attributes for Security.” The workaround for end-user dialogs is described on the 7u45 release notes, which explains removing the Trusted-Library attribute for LiveConnect calls in favor of Caller-Allowable-Codebase. This provides necessary protections (without warnings) for all users at or above the security baseline. Client installations automatically detect updates to the secure baseline and prompt users to upgrade. Warning dialogs above or below Both of these attributes should work together to support the various versions of client installations. We are aware of the issue that modifying the Manifest to use the newer Caller-Allowable-Codebase causes warnings for users below the security baseline and that not doing it displays a warning for users above. Manifest Attribute 7u45 7u40 and below Only Caller-Allowable-Codebase No dialog Displays prompt Only Trusted-Library Displays prompt No dialog Both Displays prompt (*) No dialog This will be fixed in a future release so that both attributes can co-exist. The current work-around would be to favor using Caller-Allowable-Codebase over the old Trusted-Library call. For users who need to stay below the security baseline System Administrators that schedule software deployments across managed computers may consider applying a Deployment Rule Set as described in Option 1 of “What to do if your applet is blocked or warns of mixed code.” System Administrators may also sign up for email notifications of Critical Patch Updates.

  I was thinking about the XML format and the following quote: “XML is not a database. It was never meant to be a database. It is never going to be a database. Relational databases are proven technology with more than 20 years of implementation experience. They are solid, stable, useful products. They are not going away. XML is a very useful technology for moving data between different databases or between databases and other programs. However, it is not itself a database. Don't use it like one.“ -Effective XML: 50 Specific Ways to Improve Your XML by Elliotte Rusty Harold (page 230, Part 4, Item 41, 2nd paragraph) This seems to really stress that XML should not be used for data storage and should only be used for program to program interoperability. Personally, I disagree and .NET's app.config file that's used to store a program's settings is an example of data storage in an XML file. However for databases rather than configurations etc XML should not be used. To develop my point, I will use two examples: A) Data about customers with fields that are all on one level i.e. there are a number of fields all relating to one customer with no children B) Data about configuration of an application where nested fields and properties make a lot of sense So my question is, Is this still a valid statement and is it now acceptable to store data using XML? EDIT: I've sent an email to the author of that quote to ask for his input/extra context.

• A story from SQLvdb and Idera

  A year or so back, I struggled with some consistency problems so I figured out I needed a way to "mount" backup files as a virtual database. At the time (SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008) my choice fell on Idera's SQLvdb because it felt easy enough to use. I used it a few times and it worked great. Some time later we upgraded to SQL Server 2008R2 and I didn't use SQLvbd for a long time. Until yesterday... I was upset that suddenly SQLvbd took more than 2 hours to mount the backup file (if it succeeded at all). I uninstalled the application and went for lunch. After lunch, I decided to give SQLvbd another chance so I emailed their tech support and got a response within 30 minutes or so. Now, since I am a SQL Server MVP, they gave me another serial number than my first and I downloaded and installed a newer version. But also this version was really slow. I emailed back to them with the additional information they requested and to my surprise I had got an email this morning when I came back to work, where Idera explained some of the issues (bugs) and asked my to test a newer version. I did, and now a fresh mount of a 100GB database (compressed to 20GB with native compression) located on our SAN takes less than 6 minutes! Thank you. //Peter

• Getting codebaseHQ SVN ChangeLog data in your application

  I deploy apps via ClickOnce. After each deployment we have to review the changes made and send out an email to the users with the changes. What I decided now to do is to use CodebaseHQ’s API to access a project’s SVN repository and display the commit notes so some users who download new updates can check what was changed or updated in an app. This saves a heck of a lot of time, especially when your apps are in beta and you are making several changes daily based on feedback. • Adsense click bot is click bombing my site

  I have a site that get's roughly 7,000 - 10,000 page views per day right now. Starting around 1 AM on 7/1/12 I noticed the CTR was rising dramatically. These clicks would be credited then de-credited soon after. So, they were obviously fraudulent clicks. The next day I had about 200 clicks in account with about 100 of them being fraudulent. It's about 3 - 8 per hour evenly dispersed for each of the three ads 24 hours a day. This leads me to believe that it's some sort of Adsense click bot. Also, I removed the ads last evening then put them back up around 3AM and the invalid clicks started within 10 minutes. I signed up for statcounter.com to analyze the exit links on the Adsense. Then I conditionally blocked ads for the IP address of the person / bot I suspected doing this. But, I think that the bot has several proxies to choose from and can refresh IP addresses. I've notified Google through the invalid click form / email 4 times over the past two days in order to let them know I'm aware of the situation and am working on a solution. I've also temporally removed all ads on that site. How can I block a bot like this? Thank you.

At the time it hit the market people simply didn’t get the value of having a cheap, easy to use internet terminal. It probably didn’t help much that the 1990s internet didn’t have the plethora of powerful and useful web-based applications we have now.   I am having a problem with a test page I set up for my website. The config file (index.html) looks like this <html> <head> <title>Welcome to website.net!</title> </head> <body> <h1>Success! The website.net virtual host is working!</h1> </body> </html> Which should display a page like this in my browser when I navigate to www.mywebsite.net Welcome to website.net! Success! The website.net virtual host is working! However I get a 403 "forbidden" error when I navigate to the page. What am I missing? I have the directory installed on /var/www/mywebsite.net/public_html/index.html I have the permissions of the /var/www directory set to 755 so that others can read and exicute it but it does not seem to be working. I also have port 80 open on my iptable. The server is a VPS server if that makes a difference however I have added a DNS record for the ip address. Any help is appreciated! • TechEd 2010 Day Two – No SQL Server in Sight

  Today I worked the booth at TechEd 2010, manning the new “Surface” computer, which is just the coolest object on the planet. After that I didn’t attend a single SQL Server session – instead I’ve been frequenting SharePoint, Microsoft Office, and even the High-Performance Computing sessions. The reason is that I get really high quality SQL Server presentations at PASS, SQL Saturdays, and online from Microsoft and other vendors. While there are SQL Server sessions here (after all, I’m giving one of them!) I tend to try and see things that I don’t normally get to learn about. And the cross-pollination between those technologies and mine is fantastic.     I’ve even managed to go to an Entity Framework presentation for the developers. I actually have (a little) more respect for that technology – and I’ve modified my presentation to encompass more of that information. So whenever you have the chance, take a walk outside your comfort zone. • No Clipboard support in Windows Phone 7 Series &ndash; iPhone points laughs

  What exactly were you taking of late MSFT? So much for a spanking new mobile OS which wants to emulate the iPhone OS so badly that it even copied and pasted the iPhone’s erstwhile lack of clipboard support as well? The reason given is so lame (shall I say differently able?) that deserves pity rather than lament. According to MSFT people don’t use the clipboard that often. Being a WinMo user for the better part of my life and having developed for the platform for worse part of it I could say with conviction that Clipboard support was one key differentiator which kept me away from “The Phone to have” of 2007-8-9. Let me try to find few use cases I for one have been using the clipboard. Copy files to and from card and phone memory. Copy images, audio files from apps/browsers/explorer to email other apps. Copy text to/from word documents, notes and emails. Copy content from network drives to memory card. Copy links between browsers (Yes i did it for the love of Opera and PIE alike). Others could definitely come up with more. So who are these so called “users” who provided feedback to MSFT that the clipboard is useless? • Observable Adapter

  .NET 4.0 introduced a pair of interfaces, IObservable<T> and IObserver<T>, supporting subscriptions to and notifications for push-based sequences. In combination with Reactive Extensions (Rx), these interfaces provide a convenient and uniform way of describing event sources and sinks in .NET. The StreamInsight CTP refresh in November 2009 included an Observable adapter supporting “reactive” event inputs and outputs.   While we continue to believe it enables an important programming model, the Observable adapter was not included in the final (RTM) release of Microsoft StreamInsight 1.0. The release takes a dependency on .NET 3.5 but for timing reasons could not take a dependency on .NET 4.0. Shipping a separate copy of the observable interfaces in StreamInsight – as we did in the CTP refresh – was not a viable option in the RTM release.   Within the next months, we will be shipping another preview of the Observable adapter that targets .NET 4.0. • Exempt programs from using active VPN connection

  When I connect to a VPN, all my network traffic is automatically routed through it. Is there a way to add exemptions to that? I don't know if adding exceptions has anything to do with the VPN protocol, but the VPN I'm using is of the OpenVPN protocol. Speaking of OpenVPN, why is it not installed by default on Ubuntu installs unlike PPTP? I could not get the list of IRCHighWay's servers, and this is the result I get trying to connect on XChat with running the bash script running: * Looking up irc.irchighway.net * Connecting to irc.irchighway.net (65.23.153.98) port 6667... * Connected.   I've been working on a new podcast for the game development community called the Deep Fried Devcast.  Currently we are in pre-production but should have some episodes up in the near future.  Here is a quick FAQ about the show: What is the Deep Fried Devcast? The Deep Fried Devcast is a bi-weekly show all about game development.  The show will feature developer interviews, a focus on the technical aspects of game development (programming, technical design), the business of team game development (time management, project management), and other areas focused around the actual development of games.
