We have developers some developers who are developing against a SQL Server 2005 database, while others are using 2008.
We just discovered that generating the edmx against a 2008 database set the ProviderManifestToken to 2008, which means some queries won't work against a 2005 database.
While this is a known issue, is there any way to set this value at run time, based on a config file?
I make a application, which has to interfaces. one is desktop and other is web application. both have their own databases (which are same is structure).
I want to sync the database from desktop to remote server and also from remote server to desktop but i have no idea that how it does.
I use the MYSql database. and my desktop application is in .NET
NOTE: There are more than one destop systems who update their databases and also sync databases.
Hello,
We have an .NET client app working against SQL Server 2005 (clustered), do I need to do something special in the client app to make it cluster aware?
Thanks.
Is there any sort of non-SQL API for talking to SQL Server? I'm curious if there is a more direct way to retrieve table or view data.
(I don't have a problem with SQL, just curious if any of the layer between the SQL parser and the underlying data store is exposed.)
I need a way to make my database mdf file secure from any adminstrators in SQL Server Express. Because I am developing application with C# connected to SQL Express database.
I'm supporting an old vb.net program whose database it connected to was moved from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008. Is there a setting on SQL Server 2008 which will allow ODBC connections to access the database but not allow VB.NET to connect to it programmatically?
the error i keep receiving in the app is:
An error has occurred while
establishing a connection to the
server. When connecting to SQL Server
2005, this failure may be caused by
the fact that under the default
settings SQL Server does not allow
remote connections. (provider: Named
Pipes Provider, error: 40 – Could not
open a connection to SQL Server)
however I can connect to it when I create a system dsn to the sql server instance and through VS2005's Tools Connect to Database.
Here is the code I'm using to connect:
dim strC as string
strC = "data source=bob; database=subscribers; user id=bobuser; password=passme"
dim connection as New SqlClient.SqlConnection(strC)
try
connection.open()
catch ex as Exception
msgbox(ex.message)
end try
connection.Close()
Hi,
I have a database (SQL server express 2008) which has a column that is defined as text. When we try to store some text which is in chinese, it is not saved. I read that the field should be ntext. I will now have to a conversion to my table to create the column as ntext.
Would I have to do anything with the collation of the database which is set to Latin?

Hi
Is there any way to massively alter primary keys(uid) to all tables with no primary primary keys in sql server database ? I have a lot of tables and most of them don not have primary keys.
Thanks in advance.
Today was released SQL Server 2008 R2.
Was trying to find what is new (from the developer perspective), but the MS sites has all the PR blah, blah, blah.
There is something new to be aware?
hi!
Is there a way to insert only date in a datetime column in sql server without the time?
for example
date (datetime)
===============
12-01-2000
16-02-2000
or i should store this as a varchar and cast it when retriving so that i can convert to whatever form i need.
Hi,
I just noticed that if I have an identity column in a table, when I insert new rows SQL Server 2008 is automatically filling up the sequence if there are discontinuity. I mean, if in my identity column I have 1,2,5,6 if I insert other two rows in the table the system puts automatically 3,7 in the identity column.
Do you know how to control this behavior?
THANKS
Hi all, I just set up Mercurial on our main webserver, hosting repositories via hgwebdir.cgi. The problem I'm having now is when I run hg push from my local machine to the server's repository, it takes an absolutely ridiculous amount of time to push a very small directory, with only a single changeset. Is it possible that I've set something up wrong? I keep getting HTTP Error 502: Bad Gateway.
Thanks!
Hello.

Hi Experts,
I have a tables with data like this
Id BookId TagId
34 113421 9
35 113421 10
36 113421 11
37 113421 1
38 113422 9
39 113422 1
40 113422 12
I need to write a query (SQL Server) which gives me data according to the tags say if I want bookIds where
tagid =9 it should return bookid 113421 and 113422 as it exists in both the books, but If I ask data for tags 9 and 10 it should return only book 113421 as that is the only book where both the tags are present.
Thanks

I have half a million records in a data set of which 50,000 are updated. Now I need to commit the updated records back to the SQL Server 2005 Database.
What is the best and efficient way to do this considering the fact that such updates could be frequent (though concurrency is not an issue but performance is)
In Oracle's PL-SQL, you can declare a variable and define its type based on a table column:
declare var1 table.column%TYPE;
Is it possible to do something similar in MS SQL Server?
I searched but could not find a duplicate for this question. If there is one, please let me know and I'll refer to it and delete this.
Is there any handy tool that can make updating tables easier? Usually I got an Excel file with the original value in one column and new value in another column. Then I write a formula in Excel to create the 'update' statement. Is there any way to simplify the updating task?
I believe the approach in SQL server 2000 and 2005 would be different, so could we discuss them both? Thanks.
Question: The new SQL Server 2008 database returns me values formatted English (date/float).
Is there a way I can set the return format ?
For example temporarely switching the database language?
Or just set the language for the current query ?
Sql server 2005 (even 2008) strips the insignificant whitespaces by default. To keep one can use the CONVERT funtction with the last argument as '1' (Ref. Article). How can we do the same thing in Entity Framework?
thanks
