  I've come up with a simple search view to search for records in my app. The user just enters all parameters in the search box then all this is matched against the database, then results are returned. One of these fields is the phone number....now in the database it's stored in the format XXX-XXX-XXX. • Count Distinct With IF in MySQL?

  I need to do a query with count distinct and IF, but the results always are 0. What I need to do, is count the different users from a table in different months, using IF. My individual query, for one month is this: SELECT COUNT(DISTINCT(idUsers)) AS num_usuarios FROM table01 WHERE date1='201207' But I need to get the results by different months in the same query. What I'm trying to do is this: SELECT IF(date1=(201207), count(distinct(idUsers)), 0) as user30, IF(fecha1=(201206), count(distinct(idUsers)), 0) as user60, IF(fecha1=(201205), count(distinct(idUsers)), 0) as user90, IF(fecha1=(201204), count(distinct(idUsers)), 0) as user120, IF(fecha1=(201203), count(distinct(idUsers)), 0) as user150 FROM table01 But the all the results are always 0.

  Hi I have created jdbc mysql connection. my program works fine for simple execution of query. But if i run the same program for more than 10 hour and execute query then i receives the following mysql exception. I have not used close() method anywhere. i created database connection and opened it forever and always execute query. there is no where that i explicitly mentioned timeout for connection. i am unable to identify the problem com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.MySQLNonTransientConnectionException: Connection.close() has already been called.   I have the following SQL query:- select distinct * from dbo.Profiles profiles left join ProfileSettings pSet on pSet.ProfileKey = profiles.ProfileKey left join PlatformIdentities pId on pId.ProfileKey = profiles.Profilekey I need to convert it to a LinqToEntities expression. I have tried the following:- from profiles in _dbContext.ProfileSet let leftOuter = (from pSet in _dbContext.ProfileSettingSet select new { pSet.isInternal }).FirstOrDefault() select new { profiles.ProfileKey, Internal = leftOuter.isInternal, profiles.FirstName, profiles.LastName, profiles.EmailAddress, profiles.DateCreated, profiles.LastLoggedIn, }; The above query works fine because I haven't considered the third table "PlatformIdentities". Single left outer join works with what I have done above. How do I include PlatformIdentities (the 3rd table) ? I basically want to translate the SQL query I specified at the beginning of this post (which gives me exactly what I need) in to LinqToEntities. Thanks

• Altering a Column Which has a Default Constraint

  Setting up a default column is a common task for  developers.  But, are we naming those default constraints explicitly? In the below  table creation, for the column, sys_DateTime the default value Getdate() will be allocated. CREATE TABLE SampleTable (ID int identity(1,1), Sys_DateTime Datetime DEFAULT getdate() ) We can check the relevant information from the system catalogs from following query. SELECT sc.name TableName, dc.name DefaultName, dc.definition, OBJECT_NAME(dc.parent_object_id) TableName, dc.is_system_named  FROM sys.default_constraints dc INNER JOIN sys.columns sc ON dc.parent_object_id = sc.object_id AND dc.parent_column_id = sc.column_id and results would be: Most of the above columns are self-explanatory. The last column, is_system_named, is to identify whether the default name was given by the system. As you know, in the above case, since we didn’t provide  any default name, the  system will generate a default name for you. But the problem with these names is that they can differ from environment to environment.  If example if I create this table in different table the default name could be DF__SampleTab__Sys_D__7E6CC920 Now let us create another default and explicitly name it: CREATE TABLE SampleTable2 (ID int identity(1,1), Sys_DateTime Datetime )   ALTER TABLE SampleTable2 ADD CONSTRAINT DF_sys_DateTime_Getdate DEFAULT( Getdate()) FOR Sys_DateTime If we run the previous query again we will be returned the below output. And you can see that last created default name has 0 for is_system_named. Now let us say I want to change the data type of the sys_DateTime column to something else: ALTER TABLE SampleTable2 ALTER COLUMN Sys_DateTime Date This will generate the below error: Msg 5074, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 The object ‘DF_sys_DateTime_Getdate’ is dependent on column ‘Sys_DateTime’. Msg 4922, Level 16, State 9, Line 1 ALTER TABLE ALTER COLUMN Sys_DateTime failed because one or more objects access this column. • How to avoid SQLiteException locking errors

  I'm developing an android app. It has multiple threads reading from and writing to the android SQLite db. I am receiving the following error: SQLiteException: error code 5: database is locked I understand the SQLite locks the entire db on inserting/updating, but these errors only seems to happen when inserting/updating while I'm running a select query. The select query returns a cursor which is being left open quite a wile (a few seconds some times) while I iterate over it. If the select query is not running, I never get the locks. I'm surprised that the select could be locking the db.... is this possible, or is something else going on? What's the best way to avoid such locks? Thanks TAO

  Hi, I'm surprised this question hasn't come up. Couldn't find much on the web. Using Entry.objects.latest('created_at') I can recover the latest entry for all Entry objects, but say if I want the latest entry for each user? This is something similar to an SQL latest record query. But how do I achieve this using the ORM? Here is my approach I'm wondering if it is the most efficient way to do what I want. First I perform a sub query: Objects are grouped by user and the Max (latest) created_by field is returned for each user (created_at__max) I then filter Entry objects based on the results in the subquery and get the required objects. Entry.objects.filter(created_at__in=Entry.objects.values('user').annotate(Max('created_at')).values_list('created_at__max')) or using a manager: class UsersLatest(models.Manager): def get_query_set(self): return Super(UsersLatest,self).get_query_set().filter(created_at__in=self.model.objects.values('user').annotate(Max('created_at')).values_list('created_at__max')) Is there a more efficient way? possibly without sub query?   Hi-- I'm usually a PHP guy but got stuck doing a project in vb.net. I have a query (sqldatasource) that returns a single value (the last update date). I want to use a label to say something like "Last updated: " < Label = (returned value) In PHP this would be simple. In vb.net, all I can find are endless badly written code behinds showing how you'd execute the query onLoad then bind it to the label. Is this really the only way to do this? It seems like a ridiculously simple problem to have such a long solution. I have used a datagrid control to just bind the query result directly, but it prints the column name as well as the date, so it's not ideal. Any ideas?

• Sqlite: Selecting records spread over total records

  I have a sql / sqlite question. I need to write a query that select some values from a sqlite database table. I always want the maximal returned records to be 20. If the total selected records are more than 20 I need to select 20 records that are spread over the total records. It is also important that I always select the first and last value from the table when sorted on the date. I know how to accomplish this in code but it would be perfect to have a sqlite query that can do the same. The query Im using now is really simple and looks like this: "SELECT value,date,valueid FROM tblvalue WHERE tblvalue.deleted=0 ORDER BY DATE(date)" Hope I explained what I need, thanks for your help!

  I'm trying to come up with a way to query the values in two different columns in the same table where the result set will indicate instances where the value of columnB doesn't contain the value of columnA. For example, my "Nodes" table contains columns "NodeName" and "DNS". The values should look similar to the following: NodeName DNS Router1 Router1.mydomain.com I want to run a query to show which rows have a DNS value that does not contain (or begin with) the value of the NodeName field. I think the query should function something similar to the following, but obviously I'm missing something with regard to the use of "Like" in this situation. SELECT NodeName, DNS WHERE DNS NOT LIKE 'NodeName%' I'm using SQL Server 2005, and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated... :)

  I'm doing a basic select against a view. Unfortunately the result can be slow and I'm getting timeout errors intermittently. How can I increase the timeout? Using .NET 3.5, Sql Server 2000, Linq2Entities I'm using the very basic query List<MyData> result = db.MyData.Where(x.Attribute == search).ToList(); Fixing the query so that it's faster on the DB side is not an option here. Exact Error: "Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding." Update: I'd prefer to just change it for this one query.

  I have the following Access query I'm running through OLE DB in .NET: SELECT TOP 25 tblClient.ClientCode, tblRegion.Region FROM (tblClient LEFT OUTER JOIN tblRegion ON tblClient.RegionCode = tblRegion.RegionCode) ORDER BY tblRegion.Region There are 431 records within tblClient that have RegionCode set to NULL. For some reason, the query above returns all these 431 records instead of the first 25. If I change the query to ORDER BY tblClient.Client (the name of the client) like so: SELECT TOP 25 tblClient.ClientCode, tblRegion.Region FROM (tblClient LEFT OUTER JOIN tblRegion ON tblClient.RegionCode = tblRegion.RegionCode) ORDER BY tblClient.Client I get the expected result set of 25 records, showing a mixture of region names and NULL values. Why is it that ordering by a field retrieved through a LEFT OUTER JOIN will the TOP clause not work?

So, is the table alias somehow has an impact on the execution time / buffer gets? Thanks in advance!

• LINQ To SQL Wildcards

  How can I build in wildcards to my LINQ To SQL lambda expression? This is what I have currently: var query = from log in context.Logs select log; foreach (string filter in CustomReport.ExtColsToFilter) { string tempFilter = filter; query = query.Where(Log => Log.FormattedMessage.Contains(tempFilter)); } This works fine up until I try and pass wildcards in the filter string. I'm experimenting with SqlMethods.Like() but to no avail. The filters above look like this: "<key>NID</key><value>mcass</value>". I'd like to be able to pass filters like this: "<key>NID</key><value>%m%</value>"

• nHibernate HQL dynamic Instantiation question

  Hello all, I can't find what's going on with the following nHibernate HQL. here's my VB.Net code: Return _Session.GetNamedQuery("PersonAnthroSummary").SetInt32(0, 2).UniqueResult() My Named Query: <sql-query name="PersonAnthroSummary"> select New PersonAnthroSummary( Anthro.Height, Anthro.Weight ) from PersonAnthroContact as Anthro where Anthro.ID = ? </sql-query> and i am importing the DTO class: <import class="xxxxxxx.DataServices.PersonAnthroSummary, xxxxxxxxx.DataServices"/> PersonAnthroSummary has a constructor that will take height and weight arguments. when i test this, nHibernate throwing following exception: {"Incorrect syntax near 'Anthro'."} and generated QueryString is: "select New PersonAnthroSummary( Anthro.Height, Anthro.Weight ) from PersonAnthroContact as Anthro where Anthro.ID = @p0" Can some one tell me what i'm doing wrong here?

• Unit testing in Django

  I'm really struggling to write effective unit tests for a large Django project. I have reasonably good test coverage, but I've come to realize that the tests I've been writing are definitely integration/acceptance tests, not unit tests at all, and I have critical portions of my application that are not being tested effectively. I want to fix this ASAP. Here's my problem. My schema is deeply relational, and heavily time-oriented, giving my model object high internal coupling and lots of state. Many of my model methods query based on time intervals, and I've got a lot of auto_now_add going on in timestamped fields. So take a method that looks like this for example: def summary(self, startTime=None, endTime=None): # ... logic to assign a proper start and end time # if none was provided, probably using datetime.now() objects = self.related_model_set.manager_method.filter(...) return sum(object.key_method(startTime, endTime) for object in objects) How does one approach testing something like this? Here's where I am so far. It occurs to me that the unit testing objective should be given some mocked behavior by key_method on its arguments, is summary correctly filtering/aggregating to produce a correct result? Mocking datetime.now() is straightforward enough, but how can I mock out the rest of the behavior? I could use fixtures, but I've heard pros and cons of using fixtures for building my data (poor maintainability being a con that hits home for me). I could also setup my data through the ORM, but that can be limiting, because then I have to create related objects as well. And the ORM doesn't let you mess with auto_now_add fields manually. Mocking the ORM is another option, but not only is it tricky to mock deeply nested ORM methods, but the logic in the ORM code gets mocked out of the test, and mocking seems to make the test really dependent on the internals and dependencies of the function-under-test. The toughest nuts to crack seem to be the functions like this, that sit on a few layers of models and lower-level functions and are very dependent on the time, even though these functions may not be super complicated. My overall problem is that no matter how I seem to slice it, my tests are looking way more complex than the functions they are testing.

• SharePoint 2007 Publishing site and Audience Targeting in Web Part

  In a Publishing site I have web part that has to show news items from the list that has Audience Targeting field. I am using CAML query to retrieve small number of last news items. Is it possible to specify Target Audience in the CAML query ? If not, how should I do it ? Retrieve all results and than apply filter in a loop ? I am practically duplicating Content Query Web Part and I need Audience Targeting in my custom web part.
