• License Requirements for Including Dual-Licensed Open-Source Software

  How do you opt into one software license and not the other when the distributor gives the consumer more than one choice? For example I would like to use the DataTables JavaScript library in my web application. According to their web site, "DataTables is dual licensed under the GPL v2 license or a BSD (3-point) license." • What are the options for simple Ajax calls for a Java webapp?

  I've got a very simple need and I don't know what are the options available. If I simplify, users see webpage like this server by a Java webapp server: [-] red [x] green [-] blue [-] yellow The selected color is green And then I want the user to be able to select the yellow color and have the part of the page containing the relevant text change to: [-] red [-] green [-] blue [x] yellow The selected color is yellow Basically I want something a bit more user friendly than simply using HTTP GET all the time. There shall be a lot of options the user can select from and this shall affect an (HTML formatted) text displayed on the page. And I want the user to see his change as soon as possible, without having the page to fully reload and without being redirected to another page. There shall be a client/server round-trip (the information to display depending on the options selected ain't available on the client-side so I cannot do it all in JavaScript in the browser). I'd like to use Ajax requests but I don't know which way to go: jQuery GWT something else What are my options and what would be the pros and cons of the various approach? P.S: I'm very familiar with Java (SCP since the last century and basically being a Java programmer for the last 12 years or so) but not familiar at all with JavaScript (though I did hack a few Ajaxy-calls years ago, way before great libraries existed).

Every single time when someone has followed my answer – they have found accurate answer in first few clicks. However increasingly this question getting very popular so I have decided to answer this question here. I usually prefer to create my own T-SQL script but in today’s case, I have taken the script from web. I have seen this script at so many places I do not know who is original creator so not sure who should get credit for the same. Question: How to retrieve SQL Server Installation date? Answer: Run following query and it will give you date of SQL Server Installation. SELECT create_date FROM sys.server_principals WHERE sid = 0x010100000000000512000000 Question: I have installed SQL Server Evaluation version how do I know what is the expiry date for it? Answer: SQL Server evaluation period is for 180 days. The expiration date is always 180 days from the initial installation.   LinqPad as we all know has been a wonderful tool for running ad-hoc queries. With Azure Table storage in picture LinqPad was no longer in picture and we shifted focus to Cloud Storage Studio only to realize the limited and strange querying capabilities of CSS. With some tweaking to Linqpad we can get the comfortable old shoe of ad-hoc queries with LinqPad in the Azure Table storage. Steps: 1. Start LinqPad 2. Right Click in the query window and select “Query Properties” 3. In The Additional References add reference to Microsoft.WindowsAzure.StorageClient, System.Data.Services.Client.dll and the assembly containing the implementation of the DataServiceContext class tied to the Azure table storage. 4. In the additional namespace imports import the same three namespaces mentioned above. 5. Then we need to provide following details. a. Table storage account name and shared key. b. DataServiceContext implementing class in your code. c. • Deployable dependencies in Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Beta

  One new feature that comes with Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Beta is support for deployment references. Deployment reference means that you can include all necessary DLL-s to deployment package so your application has all assemblies it needs to run with it in deployment package. In this posting I will show you how to use deployment dependencies. When I open my ASP.NET web application I have new option for references when I right-click on my web project: Add Deployable Dependencies… If you select it you will see dialog where you can select dependencies you want to add to your project package. When packages you need are selected click OK. Visual Studio adds new folder to your project called _bin_DeployableAssemblies. Screenshot on right shows the list of assemblies added for ASP.NET Pages and Razor. All DLL-s required to run ASP.NET MVC 3 with Razor view engine are here. I am not sure if NuGet.Core.dll is required in production but if it is added then let it be there. Deploy to Azure I tried to deploy my ASP.NET MVC project that uses Razor to Windows Azure after adding deployable references to my project. Deployment went fine and web role instance started without any problems. The only DLL reference I made as local was the one for System.Web.Mvc. All Razor stuff came with deployable dependencies. Conclusion Visual Studio support for deployable dependencies is great because this way component providers can build definitions for their components so also assemblies that are loaded dynamically at runtime will be in deployment package.

• Wubi doens't work anymore - shows 'No wubildr' error

  Basics: HP Mini 311 Ubuntu netbook edition 10.04 (installed via Wubi) Symptoms: I load to Windows Boot Manager as usual. Options are Windows 7 and Ubuntu Netbook, like usual. Selecting Windows 7 does as it should. Loading Ubuntu Netbook, though, does not take me to the usual screen where it lets me select versions of Ubuntu (sorry for bad wording, not sure what the real name is called; it's where you select from about 6 items; I always picked the first due to lack of knowledge without issue). Instead it flashes an error in white on a black screen then restarts very quickly. It took me a few restarts, but here is the error: Try (hd0,0): NTSF5 No wubildr Try (hd0,1): NTSF5: Situation: I have no clue what caused it. The only thing I did last night on Ubuntu was install Skype, but the mic didn't work instantly so I got lazy and switched to Windows 7 and used Skype on there. When I tried to switch back to Ubuntu it began this. (There may be something I forget... it was 5 in the morning). There were no recent updates that I remember. No weird activity. Just... random. Help please?

• How can I grant read-only access to my SQL Server 2008 database?

  Hi, I'm trying to grant read-only access (in other words: select queries only) to a user account on my SQL Server 2008 R2 database. Which rights do I have to grant to the user to make this work? I've tried several kinds of combinations of permissions on the server and the database itself, but in all cases the user could still run update queries or he could not run any queries (not even select) at all. The error message I always got was The server principal "foo" is not able to access the database "bar" under the current security context. Thanks for your help, Adrian

• SQL SERVER – T-SQL Scripts to Find Maximum between Two Numbers

  There are plenty of the things life one can make it simple. I really believe in the same. I was yesterday traveling for community related activity. On airport while returning I met a SQL Enthusiast. He asked me if there is any simple way to find maximum between two numbers in the SQL Server. I asked him back that what he really mean by Simple Way and requested him to demonstrate his code for finding maximum between two numbers. Here is his code: DECLARE @Value1 DECIMAL(5,2) = 9.22 DECLARE @Value2 DECIMAL(5,2) = 8.34 SELECT (0.5 * ((@Value1 + @Value2) + ABS(@Value1 - @Value2))) AS MaxColumn GO I thought his logic was accurate but the same script can be written another way. I quickly wrote following code for him and which worked just fine for him. Here is my code: DECLARE @Value1 DECIMAL(5,2) = 9.22 DECLARE @Value2 DECIMAL(5,2) = 8.34 SELECT CASE WHEN @Value1 > @Value2 THEN @Value1 ELSE @Value2 END AS MaxColumn GO He agreed that my code is much simpler but as per him there is some problem with my code which apparently he does not remember at this time. There are cases when his code will give accurate values and my code will not. I think his comment has value but both of us for the moment could not come up with any valid reason. Do you think any scenario where his code will work and my suggested code will not work? • Nano suddenly putting in weird characters when I type

  I am using a shell and editing a file in nano (similar to pico). A short while ago, it started doing this thing where if I type: $query = "select" * from topics where id='' "; and then I hit Backspace and try to stick the letter 'a' into the id='' part, it changes it to: $query = "select * from koala_topics where id='a='' "; and the cursor jumps around to a few spaces before. Also if I type print At the start of a new line, and then I think "Oh I should have added a tab" and I go back and try to add a tab, it adds a tab AND 2 spaces, and if I put the cursor through the word print, it turns into printnt. Some other weird things have happened too. I uninstalled nano using yum (which is how I installed it), and then re-installed it, thinking that would get me clean preferences (in case that was the problem) but it doesn't fix it.

• July, the 31 Days of SQL Server DMO’s – Day 3 (sys.dm_exec_connections)

    The third DMV we will review is the sys.dm_exec_connections DMV. This DMV is Server-Scoped and displays information about each and every current connection on your SQL Server Instance. Lets take a look at some information that this DMV returns. SELECT * FROM sys.dm_exec_connections After reviewing this DMV, in my opinion, its not a whole lot of useful information returned from this DMV from a monitoring or troubleshooting standpoint. The primary use case I have for this DMV is when I need to get a quick count of how many connections I have on one of my SQL Server boxes. For this purpose a quick SELECT COUNT(*) satisfies my need. However, for those who need it, there is other information such as what type of authentication a specific connection is using, network packet size, and client/local TCP ports being used. This information can come in handy for specific scenarios but you probably wont need it very much for your day to day monitoring/troubleshooting needs. However, this is still an important DMV that you should be aware of in the event that you need it. To Fix it , you can perform the following steps: a.In the publish dialogue, uncheck “Overwrite existing version” and rename the workflow. b.Delete the old workflow which was checked out c.Publish the new workflow again with the old name d.Delete the “temporary” workflow again

In his update of Brian Leonard's original Taking Your First Steps With Oracle Solaris, Glynn Foster walks you through the most basic steps required to get a version of Oracle Solaris 11 operational: Installing Solaris (VirtualBox, bare metal, or multi-boot) Managing users (root role, sudo command) Managing services with SMF (svcs and svcadm) Connecting to the network (with SMF or manually via dladm and ipadm) Figuring out the directory structure Updating software (with the IPS GUI or the pkg command) Managing package repositories Creating and managing additional boot environments One of the things you'll have to consider as you install Solaris 11 on an x86 system is whether Solaris has the proper drivers for the devices on your system. In the section titled "Installing On Bare Metal as a Standalone System," Glynn shows you how to use the Device Driver utility that's included with the Graphical Installer. However, if you want to get that information before you start installing Solaris 11 on your x86 system, you can consult the x86 Device List that's part of the Oracle Solaris Hardware Compatibility List (HCL). Here's how: Open the Device List. Scroll down to the table. Open the "Select Release" pull-down menu and pick "Solaris 11 11/11." Move over to the "Select Device Type" pull-down menu, and pick the device type. Or "All." The table will list all the devices of that type that are supported by Solaris 11, including PCI ID and vendor. • How to set up dual quadro cards on RHEL 5.5?

  I have a RHEL 5 workstation with 2 nvidia Quadro FX4500 cards, with one display attached to each card. After doing a clean install of RHEL 5.5, the second display doesnt work (it worked ok in RHEL 5.2). Neither separate X screens nor Xinerama are working. The kernel version is 2.6.18-194.el5 I've tried nvidia drivers 185.18.36 (the ones that i was using on 5.2) and the latest 260.19.36 and neither works. • How can I reinstall XRandR without serious disruption to 12.04?

  This is the sequence that leads to xrandr going missing: Installed 12.04 on a system with a motherboard using the Intel G45 chipset and the E8400 Core 2 Duo and AMD Radeon HD 5450 video card. Installed fglrx when ubuntu prompted via Additional Drivers. Ran Catalyst (Administrative) to select multi-desktop and rebooted. Ran Catalyst (Administrative) to select Xinerama and rebooted. Answer yes to about 3 prompts that request to send bug reports to ubuntu. At this point Settings > Appearances no longer offers the widget that allows you to resize the Unity Launcher icons. Also Settings > Displays says randr extension is not present. BTW: This same sequence is repeatable, including the issues with the missing icon resizer and xrandr, so there is clearly bug fixing potential here. How can I get xrandr reinstalled without un-installing a large set of dependencies? I realize that if I un-install xrandr I will have the chance to re-install but the number of dependencies is large and so an un-install will cause many systems to be un-installed and I am afraid that will ruin Ubuntu 12.04. Hence, I'm looking for a more direct fix. I thought rebooting the .ISO disk and reinstalling would be a good fix but obviously not since this problem is repeatable.

• Asus G53SX How to use the recovery partition

  I am trying to use the recovery partition on my Asus G53SX laptop, but the instructions in the included booklet don't match up with what happens on the computer. It says press F9 during bootup and then press ENTER to select windows setup. Then select the language you want to recover, and so on. When I press F9 I end up in the boot manager and from there I can access safe mode and all these things. The closest thing I can find in this list is "Repair your computer" but this menu takes me to recovery points and backup images, none which are mentioned in the booklet. How can I use the recovery partition to restore my laptop to factory state?

• Performance-Driven Development

  I was reading a blog yesterday about the evils of SELECT *. The author pointed out that it's almost always a bad idea to use SELECT * for a query, but in the case of SQL Azure (or any cloud database, for that matter) it's especially bad, since you're paying for each transmission that comes down the line. A very good point indeed. This got me to thinking - shouldn't we treat ALL programming that way? In other words, wouldn't it make sense to pretend that we are paying for every chunk of data - a little less for a bit, a lot more for a BLOB or VARCHAR(MAX), that sort of thing? In effect, we really are paying for that. Which led me to the thought of Performance-Driven Development, or the act of programming with the goal of having the fastest code from the very outset. This isn't an original title, since a quick Bing-search shows me a couple of offerings from Forrester and a professional in Israel who already used that title, but the general idea I'm thinking of is assigning a "cost" to each code round-trip, be it network, storage, trip time and other variables, and then rewarding the developers that come up with the fastest code. I wonder what kind of throughput and round-trip times you could get if your developers were paid on a scale of how fast the application performed...   I want to write a shell script which will attach to a named tmux session, select a window (or pane) in that session and run a command in that selected window (or pane). How do I do this from a bash script? I know tmux new-window -n:mywindow 'exec something' allows you to send commands to a freshly created window. But I need something like tmux select-window -t:0 'my command' I suppose I could use send-keys but seems like their should be something that takes a command or list of commands that get run.

  I'm using Windows 7 with ye good olde Windows 2000 style (I favor usability and space over fancy-pants aero and effects) and am looking for a way I can make the ALT-TAB-Control interactable with my mouse. I generally have many many windows open, and pressing tab or shift-tab over and over again begings to really frustrate me, if i want to reach a certain program. Of course, I could just select the program on my taskbar, but that takes even longer. I really like the way mac os x has its alt-tab menu - more or less exactly the same, but I can select the program with my mouse. Is there something like that for my environment?

• Where to set permissions to all server for logon trigger on sql server 2005

  I need to keep track of the last login time for each user in our SQL Server 2005 database. I created a trigger like this: CREATE TRIGGER LogonTimeStamp ON ALL SERVER FOR LOGON AS BEGIN IF EXISTS (SELECT * FROM miscdb..user_last_login WHERE user_id = SYSTEM_USER) UPDATE miscdb..user_last_login SET last_login = GETDATE() WHERE user_id = SYSTEM_USER ELSE INSERT INTO miscdb..user_last_login (user_id,last_login) VALUES (SYSTEM_USER,GETDATE()) END; go This trigger works for servers that are system admins but it won't allow regular users to login. I have granted public select,insert and update to the table but that doesn't seem to be the issue. Is there a way to set permissions on the trigger? Is there something else I am missing? Thanks
