• Shaping EF LINQ Query Results Using Multi-Table Includes

  I have a simple LINQ EF query below using the method syntax. I'm using my Include statement to join four tables: Event and Doc are the two main tables, EventDoc is a many-to-many link table, and DocUsage is a lookup table. My challenge is that I'd like to shape my results by only selecting specific columns from each of the four tables. But, the compiler is giving a compiler is giving me the following error: 'System.Data.Objects.DataClasses.EntityCollection does not contain a definition for "Doc' and no extension method 'Doc' accepting a first argument of type 'System.Data.Objects.DataClasses.EntityCollection' could be found. I'm sure this is something easy but I'm not figuring it out. I haven't been able to find an example of someone using the multi-table include but also shaping the projection. • callback on a variable which is inside a .each() loop

  I have this function, which is doing an asynchronous call to FB.api method. Now, i am looping over some data and capturing result of the above method call successfully. However, I am using a .each loop and I really can not figure out how to place my callback in this method, so that the outer method is only executed once. Basically, all it does is swaps pronoun etc. perspectives. This is fine when I throw a string like "I love you" at it, it returns "you love me" but when I throw something like: you love your version of my couch because I love you, and you're a couch-lover. I get: I love your versyouon of your couch because I love I, and I'm a couch-lover. I'm confused as to why this is happening. I explicitly split the string into a list to avoid this. Why would it be able to detect it as being a part of a list item, rather than just an exact match? Also, slightly deviating to avoid having to post another question so similar; if a solution to this breaks this function, what will happen to commas, full stops, other punctuation? It made some very surprising mistakes. My expected output is: I love my version of your couch because you love I, and I'm a couch-lover. The reason I formatted it like this, is because I eventually hope to be able to replace the item.replace(x, y) variables with words in a database.

• How can I perform this query between related tables without using UNION?

  Suppose I have two separate tables that I watch to query. Both of these tables has a relation with a third table. How can I query both tables with a single, non UNION based query? I want the result of the search to rank the results by comparing a field on each table. Here's a theoretical example. I have a User table. That User can have both CDs and books. I want to find all of that user's books and CDs with a single query matching a string ("awesome" in this example). A UNION based query might look like this: SELECT "book" AS model, name, ranking FROM book WHERE name LIKE 'Awesome%' UNION SELECT "cd" AS model, name, ranking FROM cd WHERE name LIKE 'Awesome%' ORDER BY ranking DESC How can I perform a query like this without the UNION? If I do a simple left join from User to Books and CDs, we end up with a total number of results equal to the number of matching cds timse the number of matching books. Is there a GROUP BY or some other way of writing the query to fix this?

  To start I'm using Ninject 1.5. I have two projects: Web project and a Class library. My DI configuration is within the Web project. Within my class library I have the following defined: public interface ICacheService<T> { string Identifier { get; } T Get(); void Set( T objectToCache, TimeSpan timeSpan ); bool Exists(); } And then a concrete class called CategoryCacheService. In my web project I bind the two: Bind( typeof( ICacheService<List<Category>> ) ).To( typeof(CategoryCacheService)).Using<SingletonBehavior>(); In my class library I have extension methods for the HtmlHelper class, for example: public static class Category { [Inject] public static ICacheService Categories { get; set; } public static string RenderCategories(this HtmlHelper htmlHelper) { var c = Categories.Get(); return string.Join(", ", c.Select(s = s.Name).ToArray()); } } I've been told that you cannot inject into static properties, instead I should use Kernel.Get<() - However... Since the code above is in a class library I don't have access to the Kernel. How can I get the Kernel from this point or is there a better way of doing this? Thanks!

The game has nine possible outcomes based on the three kinds of objects. The number of interactions is the cross product of the kinds of objects. • Node.js/Express Partials problem: Can't be nested too deep?

  I'm learning Node.js, Express, haml.js and liking it. I've run into a prety annoying problem though. I'm pretty new to this but have been getting nice results so far. I'm writing a jquery heavy web app that relies on a table containing divs. The divs slide around, switch back and fourth and are resized etc to my hearts content. What I'm looking for a way to switch (template?) the divs. Since I've been building in express and mimicking the chat example it would make sense to use partials. The rub is that I've been using inexplicit divs in haml, held within a td. The divs are cunstructed as follows: %tr %td .class1.class2.class3.classetc Which has worked fine cross browser. Parsing the classes works great for the js code to pass arguments around, fetch values etc. What I'd like to be able to do is something like: %tr %td .class1.class2.class3.classetc %ul#messages != this.partial('message.html.haml', { collection: messages }) Any combination I've tried with this has failed however. And I might have tried them all. If I could put a partial into that div I'd probably be set. And you can nest them as long as you use #ids instead of .classes. But if you use more than one class it breaks! I think that's the most accurate way of summing it up. How do you do this? I've checked out various templating solutions like mu.js and micro template like by John Resig. I earlier checked out this thread on templating engines. It's very possible I'm making some fundamental mistake here, I'm new to this. What's a good way to do this?

• Optimization of SQL query regarding pair comparisons

  Hi, I'm working on a pair comparison site where a user loads a list of films and grades from another site. My site then picks two random movies and matches them against each other, the user selects the better of the two and a new pair is loaded. This gives a complete list of movies ordered by whichever is best. The database contains three tables; fm_film_data - this contains all imported movies fm_film_data(id int(11), imdb_id varchar(10), tmdb_id varchar(10), title varchar(255), original_title varchar(255), year year(4), director text, description text, poster_url varchar(255)) fm_films - this contains all information related to a user, what movies the user has seen, what grades the user has given, as well as information about each film's wins/losses for that user. fm_films(id int(11), user_id int(11), film_id int(11), grade int(11), wins int(11), losses int(11)) fm_log - this contains records of every duel that has occurred. fm_log(id int(11), user_id int(11), winner int(11), loser int(11)) To pick a pair to show the user, I've created a mySQL query that checks the log and picks a pair at random. SELECT pair.id1, pair.id2 FROM (SELECT part1.id AS id1, part2.id AS id2 FROM fm_films AS part1, fm_films AS part2 WHERE part1.id <> part2.id AND part1.user_id = [!!USERID!!] AND part2.user_id = [!!USERID!!]) AS pair LEFT JOIN (SELECT winner AS id1, loser AS id2 FROM fm_log WHERE fm_log.user_id = [!!USERID!!] UNION SELECT loser AS id1, winner AS id2 FROM fm_log WHERE fm_log.user_id = [!!USERID!!]) AS log ON pair.id1 = log.id1 AND pair.id2 = log.id2 WHERE log.id1 IS NULL ORDER BY RAND() LIMIT 1 This query takes some time to load, about 6 seconds in our tests with two users with about 800 grades each. I'm looking for a way to optimize this but still limit all duels to appear only once. The server runs MySQL version 5.0.90-community.

• Invoking different methods on threads

  I have a main process main. It creates 10 threads (say) and then what i want to do is the following: while(required){ Thread t= new Thread(new ClassImplementingRunnable()); t.start(); counter++; } Now i have the list of these threads, and for each thread i want to do a set of process, same for all, hence i put that implementation in the run method of ClassImplementingRunnable. Now after the threads have done their execution, i wan to wait for all of them to stop, and then evoke them again, but this time i want to do them serially not in parallel. for this I join each thread, to wait for them to finish execution but after that i am not sure how to evoke them again and run that piece of code serially. Can i do something like for(each thread){ t.reevoke(); //how can i do that. t.doThis(); // Also where does `dothis()` go, given that my ClassImplementingRunnable is an inner class. } Also, i want to use the same thread, i.e. i want the to continue from where they left off, but in a serial manner. I am not sure how to go about the last piece of pseudo code. Kindly help. Working with with java.

• What tools do you have at your disposal as a manager to promote a way of thinking

  This question goes beoynd just programming, but I'd like to get some input on this, if that's okay with the community. Preferably from people that do a lot of coding themselves but also manage other people coding. My problem is this. We have all these ideas that we know is good for the overall strategy of the company and the problem is not figuring out what to do, it's to come about this change. Just telling someone to do things differently isn't enough and it's hard to promote a mind set that is shared within all of the company, (this will take time). If I could jump forward I'd like it if we could create a very nurturing company culture that promotes these ideals cross all areas but I'm not sure what tools to use. And by tools I mean anything I'm legally permitted to do. e.g. we could talk about, we could arrange traning sessions, we could spend more time in meeting (talk about it more), we could spend more time designing, we could spend more time pair-programming, we could add/remove incentive or we could encurage more play. Ultimately if we did all of these things what will be the recurring theme that ties this together. I'd like to be able to answer the question -- why should we do things like this? -- and come up with an answer that explains how important it is to think about our ideals from begining to end. I've puposly avoided to talk about or specifics of the situtation becuase I believe that it narrows things down too much. But I guess, by know you either know how to answer this question or you're as confused as I am ;) I'd love to hear from people who had to bring about a change in order to go from chaos to order, or fix something in the organization which wasn't working. And I'd like to hear it from the perspective of the developer and designer. -- or -- You could simply weigh in on what are the most important qualities in an organization encurage or stimulate rigid fun development cycle from start to finish?

• Need help with height 100% layout

  I am trying to build the following layout (file browser type of thing, left block would contain a list of files, right panel would contain selected file content): <------------- MENU -------------------> <--- LEFT ----><------- RIGHT ---------> <--- LEFT ----><------- RIGHT ---------> <--- LEFT ----><------- RIGHT ---------> <--- LEFT ----><------- RIGHT ---------> <--- LEFT ----><------- RIGHT ---------> <--- LEFT ----><------- RIGHT ---------> The page itself shouldn't have any scrollbars. Menu has 100% width and fixed height Left block has fixed width and 100% height. If content is taller - scroll bar appears inside the left block only. Right block contains <pre> element and takes the remaining width and 100% height. If content is wider or taller - scrollbar appears inside the right block only. This is what I have so far: http://jsbin.com/uqegi4/3/edit The problem is fixed menu height messes up 100% height calculation and all scrollbars inside left and right blocks appear at wrong time. I don't care about cross browser compatibility, only Chrome matters. Thanks.

To fetch 2000 records full query take 21 seconds and if I remove Subquiries it just take 4 seconds. I have tried to optimize query using 'Database Engine Tuning Advisor' and on adding new advised indexes and statistics but these changes make query time even bad. Note: As I have mentioned that this is test data to explain my question the real data has lot of tables joins columns but without Sub-Query the results us fine. Any help thanks.

• How do I import facebook friends from another website

  I am looking for a way to connect to facebook by allowing the user to enter in their username and password and have our app connect to their account and get their contacts so that they can invite them to join their group on our site. I have written a facebook app before, but this is not an app as much as it is a connector so that they can invite all their friends or just some to the site we are working on. I have seen several other sites do this and also connect to Yahoo, Gmail and Hotmail contacts. I dont think they are using Facebook Connect to do this since it is so new, but they may be. Any solution in any language is fine as I can port whatever example to use C#. I cannot find anything specifically on Google or Facebook to address this specific problem. Any help is appreciated. I saw a first answer get removed that had suggested i might need to scrape the friends page. The more I look around, this might be what i need to do. Any other way i think will require the person to add it as an app. I am wondering how a answer can get removed, maybe that user deleted it.

• Named Range Breaks Code

  I have one workbook with several sheets. I populate the listboxes (pulling static data from cells) on the 2nd sheet, click a button and it runs fine. When I populate the listboxes with a named range, the listbox populates the way I want, but I get an error because the code thinks that I didn't select anything in the listbox, even though I did. So it passes through "" instead of "title". Is this a common issue? The named range isn't a problem because it passes through the data to the listbox and I know it's selecting data because as soon as the listbox loses focus, it spits out the contents of the cell into cell A1. What's even stranger is that I have the contents of the listbox set to Msg1. So A1 gets populated with Msg1 (what I actually selected in the listbox). But when I try and use Msg1 in the code, it tells me that Msg1 is "". Again, this only happens when I use the dynamic named range, not with static data in cells K1:K9.   Background: I'm using a CRUD framework in Catalyst that auto-generates forms and lists for all tables in a given database. For example: /admin/list/person or /admin/add/person or /admin/edit/person/3 all dynamically generate pages or forms as appropriate for the table 'person'. (In other words, Admin.pm has actions edit, list, add, delete and so on that expect a table argument and possibly a row-identifying argument.) Question: In the particular application I'm building, the database will be used by multiple customers, so I want to introduce a URI scheme where the first element is the customer's identifier, followed by the administrative action/table etc: /cust1/admin/list/person /cust2/admin/add/person /cust2/admin/edit/person/3 This is for "branding" purposes, and also to ensure that bookmarks or URLs passed from one user to another do the expected thing. But I'm having a lot of trouble getting this to work. I would prefer not to have to modify the subs in the existing framework, so I've been trying variations on the following: sub customer : Regex('^(\w+)/(admin)$') { my ($self, $c, @args) = @_; #validation of captured arg snipped.. my $path = join('/', 'admin', @args); $c->request->path($path); $c->dispatcher->prepare_action($c); $c->forward($c->action, $c->req->args); } But it just will not behave. I've used regex matching actions many times, but putting one in the very first 'barrel' of a URI seems unusually traumatic. Any suggestions gratefully received.

• Can a PHP object respond to an undefined method?

  Rails relies on some of the neat aspects of Ruby. One of those is the ability to respond to an undefined method. Consider a relationship between Dog and Owner. Owner has_many :dogs and Dog belongs_to :owner. If you go into script/console, get a dog object with fido = Dog.find(1), and look at that object, you won't see a method or attribute called Owner. What you will see is an owner_id. And if you ask for fido.owner, the object will do something like this (at least, this is how it appears to me): I'm being asked for my .owner attribute. I don't have one of those! Before I throw a NoMethodError, do I have a rule about how to deal with this? Yes, I do: I should check and see if I have an owner_id. I do! OK, then I'll do a join and return that owner object. PHP's documentation is - ahem - a bit lacking sometimes, so I wonder if anyone here knows the answer to this: Can I define similar behavior for objects in PHP? If not, do you know of a workaround for flexible model joins like these?

• AJAX filter MySQL results using checkboxes

  I'm attempting to get to grips with displaying filterable MySQL data within a PHP page based on user checkbox selections. I have a database of domain names and the dates on which these will require renewal as per Nominet DAC information and I can get unfiltered data to display, but filtering results by domain extensions is proving tricky for me to accomplish. I should point out at this stage that I am a serious newcomer to many of the ideas I am trying to learn to work with here, so please be gentle. I have tried following some other articles on here also, but no dice. • CSS/Javascript: multiple columns

  hi, I'm looking for a columnizer plugin (making columns of my small divs). It is very important it has the following features: 1) It has to be as light as possible (if it is only css would be great, but I guess it is difficult make it work on IE then...) 2) It has to be cross-browser (I don't need IE6... IE7 and IE8 compatibility is required). 3) The divs has not to be broken. In other terms, the nodes have to be moved to next block but not splitted in 2. The nodes are div elements, they might include other divs, images and text. 4) The column have to have a fixed width and fixed margin. This means that when I resize the browser, and new columns are created (become the window becomes wider), the new columns have to rigidly keep the same width and distance between them. (margin:20px) (width:200px) Would be great to have some css.. but I'm afraid I need some jQuery plugin because I need all 4 features being supported. I found several plugins and css styleshits with very good solutions, but I couldn't find a complete one. Thanks
