• Sending files via HTTP to web service

  I am bit frustrated at the lack of information about this online. Here is the issue: I am in charge of creating a iOS application which sends sound data back and forth between the server and the app. The Audio is in small files and thus does not need to be streamed over, but rather it can be sent. Right now, I am using a TCP server I wrote to handle applications like this. However, I want to keep the system as simple as possible and writing your own server and client sockets can get a bit complex and leaves room for crashes. Overall it slows down development because I need to account for packet structure and other things. My question is, can I write an ASPX or PHP web service that lets me pass the files back and forth through GET or POST?

• Is IE9 a modern browser?

  At http://people.mozilla.com/~prouget/ie9/ there is a very provocative article entitled "Is IE9 a modern browser?". There is a rebuttal by Tim Sneath at http://blogs.msdn.com/b/tims/archive/2011/02/15/a-modern-browser.aspx that is well worth a look. Certainly IE9 is already superior to its predecessors. My comment on the matter is that those that consider IE9 to be non-standards compliant, should submit tests to the W3C to demonstrate the non-compliance. Upon acceptance by the W3C, all the competing browsers can then be re-tested. I prefer objective tests to subjective opinion. I have used IE9 and on some sites such as Hotmail, it is noticeably faster. I have so far been unable to apply the promised IE9 lockout of spyware cookies. With Firefox, I just instal NoScript and never enable spyware sites.

• How to save one role implementing a client/server pattern in Azure?

  Sometimes you need to have an instance performing a server role when other instances are playing the client role. An example can be a file sharing like in this great post: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/mariok/archive/2011/02/11/sharing-folders-in-azure.aspx, one instance shares a folder that all other instances are using to write files that the server processes. The problem is that there is not discovering mechanism in Azure that allows one instance to know where the instance acting as a server is located. A first approach can be having a server role and a client role like in the previous post. This means more instances, more money. A solution to save this "server" role is to use Instance 0, always available, to act as a server. An instance can know that it should act as the server checking RoleEnvironment.CurrentRoleInstance.Id.EndsWith(".0"). Other instances can iterate the RoleEnvironment Instances collection to find the instance whose name ends with ".0", getting its endpoints and acting as its clients.

  Today's little problem is that I am trying to load user controls from my codebehind like so: Dim myControl As UserControl = Page.LoadControl("~\Modules\Content.ascx")              Controls.Add(myControl)  On running the page myControl is no where to be seen. I wonder why that is? Well after a bit of thought the following come to mind... Am I using the correct code to insert the usercontrol? Is there an alternative available? Does the fact that the usercontrol has a page_load method make a difference? Does the fact that the usercontrol is being called from the page_init method make a difference? Do I need to register the control in my aspx page at design time? I'll be looking to answer these questions as the day goes on!

  my today question is: how do I manage a tablet (Gigabyte 1080) with an additional battery in Ubuntu ? The control bar shows two separate batteries but starts to suck all the energy from the secundary battery, not leaving any power in it and ruining it (if I don't remove it earlier), and then starts with the primary battery. • Uploading Files Using ASP.NET Web Forms, Generic Handler and jQuery

  In order to upload files from the client machine to the server ASP.NET developers use FileUpload server control. The FileUpload server control essentially renders an INPUT element with its type set to file and allows you to select one or more files. The actual upload operation is performed only when the form is posted to the server. Instead of making a full page postback you can use jQuery to make an Ajax call to the server and POST the selected files to a generic handler (.ashx). The generic handler can then save the files to a specified folder. • Web Platform Installer issues deploying Azure SDK 1.4 on refreshed systems.

  Recently I have been doing quite a bit of testing on different means to deploy the Azure SDKs and such. After a very successful couple of systems, I started running into issues last night. Here is the problem, if I go to the Windows Azure Website, and go to Develop, then click on the SDK and Tools, then Get Tools & SDK, it launches the Web Platform Installer.  All seems well at that point, except it will go through the initial process, will find the SDK files for 1.4, but since the tools for Visual Studio are still 1.3, the location throws back a 404, which causes the Installer to fail.  NOTE:If you already had SDK 1.3 and the tools in place, it will go through.   AFAIK, there are 2 ways to make search engines aware of a sitemap's location: Include an absolute link to it in robots.txt Submit it to them directly. The relevant URLs are: http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/ping?sitemap=SITEMAP_URL http://www.bing.com/webmaster/ping.aspx?sitemap=SITEMAP_URL Where SITEMAP_URL is the absolute URL of the sitemap. Currently, I do both. Regarding (2), I have a job that runs automatically every day which submits the sitemap to Bing and Google. I don't think there's any reason to do (1) and (2), but I'm paranoid, so I do. I imagine you can avoid both (1) and (2) if you just make your sitemap accessible at a conventional URL (like robots.txt). What's the simplest and most reliable way to ensure that search engines can find your sitemap?

  Tuesday evening I found myself minus family. I decided to use the time to “have a crack at this Silverlight Phone 7 stuff”. From zero (no experience, no tools installed, no membership on the AppHub) to submitted for approval took me from 8pm to 1am – with the last hour messing around with png files in Paint to complete the submission process! Two days later on Thursday it was approved and is now in the marketplace for you to install - or not :-) The application is very simple but it works and looks “finished” – and importantly I learnt a lot about what is involved and the power of our tooling to make this pretty easy to get going. • SQL Server Data Tools–BI for Visual Studio 2013 Re-released

  Customers used to complain that the tooling for creating BI projects (Analysis Services MD and Tabular, Reporting Services, and Integration services) has been based on earlier versions of Visual Studio than the ones they were using for their other work in Visual Studio (such as C#, VB, and ASP.NET projects). To alleviate that problem, the shipment of those tools has been decoupled from the shipment of the SQL Server product. In SQL Server 2014, the BI tooling isn’t even included in the released version of SQL Server. This allows the team to keep up-to-date with the releases of Visual Studio. A little while back, I was really pleased to see that the Visual Studio 2013 update for SSDT-BI (SQL Server Data Tools for Business Intelligence) had been released. Unfortunately, they then had to be withdrawn. The good news is that they’re back and you can get the latest version from here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42313

• Microsoft Build 1st Day

  Great keynote and I don’t like keynotes.. Seeing the great breadth of large and small devices and the number of manufacturers along with the software vision for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 was inspiring. Jordan Rudess demonstrates Tachyon on Windows 8 Then he played for a while too..   I especially liked Steve Balmers 82” slate!!
