• The Oldest Big Data Problem: Parsing Human Language

  There's a new whitepaper up on Oracle Technology Network which details the use of Digital Reasoning Systems' Synthesys software on Oracle Big Data Appliance.  Digital Reasoning's approach is inherently "big data friendly," as it leverages multiple components of the Hadoop ecosystem.  Moreover, the paper addresses the oldest big data problem of them all: extracting knowledge from human text.   You can find the paper here.   From the Executive Summary: There is a wealth of information to be extracted from natural language, but that extraction is challenging. • How should a developer reject impossible requirements?

  Here's the problem I'm facing: Quote From Project Manager: Hey Sugar, I'm assigning you the task of developing a framework that could be used for many different iOS applications. Here are the requirements: It should be able to detect the thickness of the thumb or fingers being used to manipulate the UI. With this information, all elements of the UI should be arranged & sized automatically. For a larger thumb, elements should be arranged nearer the center of the screen. For a smaller thumb, elements should be arranged nearer the corners of the screen. For a larger thumb, all fonts should be smaller. (We're assuming an adult in this case.) For a smaller thumb, all fonts should be larger. (We're assuming a younger person in this case.) Summary: This framework is required for creating user-friendly user interfaces programmatically. The framework should be developed in such a way that we can use for as many projects as needed, so it must also be very developer-friendly. I am the developer given this task, so my questions are as follows: How can I explain that these requirements are a little ridiculous? How can I explain that it would be better to concentrate on developing actual projects? How can I explain that even if this were possible, I wouldn't recommended developing such a thing? How do I say NO to this project politely, gently, and respectfully? How can I explain that even for a developer with 3 years of experience, this might not be possible?

• New partnership allows auto-transposition of client/server application to Windows Azure

  The economics of IT is changing rapidly, and organizations are searching to widen and secure availability of their systems and at the same time lower costs which is exactly what the cloud meant to do. Running your systems on Microsoft’s Windows Azure cloud for example would improve and secure the availability, accessibility and scalability (both up and down) of your systems and support the new IT economics. However, in order to take advantage of the cloud's promise of lower cost of ownership, the applications must be built or adjusted to work on that platform and in most cases this is not a simple task.  Even existing web applications cannot always be transferred to Azure without some changes, and for client/server applications, the task is way more challenging even to the point where it seems impossible. The reason is the gaps between the client/server desktop technology and the cloud's. For that reason, most of the known methodologies to migrate existing client/server applications actually involve rewrite of the desktop systems for the cloud. A unique approach is introduced by Visual WebGui which creates a virtualization layer atop ASP.Net web server, it moves the transformed or generated .Net code to that layer, and then using a patent pending protocol it renders a user interface within a plain browser. The end result is pure .NET code that is a base code for a pure rich web application and now due to a collaboration with Microsoft Windows Azure Visual WebGui provides the shortest path from client/server to the Azure cloud by being able to handle close to 95% of the transformation to the cloud platform in an automatic way. • Security Alert for CVE-2010-0886 and CVE-2010-0887 Released

  Hi, this is Eric Maurice again! Oracle just released a Security Alert to announce the availability of fixes for two vulnerabilities (CVE-2010-0886 and CVE-2010-0887) affecting Oracle Java SE and Oracle Java For Business. Both vulnerabilities only affect Java when running in a 32-bit web browser. These vulnerabilities are not present in Java running on servers or standalone Java desktop applications and do not impact any Oracle server based software. The first vulnerability (CVE-2010-0886) affects the Java Deployment Toolkit (version 6 update 10 through 19) on Windows only. The second vulnerability (CVE-2010-0887) affects the Java Plug-in (version 6 update 18 and 19) on Windows, Solaris and Linux. Both vulnerabilities may allow an attacker to run commands on the user's system with the privileges of the user, whose system may have become compromised by visiting a malicious web site. Oracle rated the severity of both vulnerabilities with a CVSS Base Score of 10.0 because many Windows users grant themselves administrative privileges. However, on other platforms, or for Windows users with limited privileges, the CVSS Base Score is only 7.5, because a successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities cannot result in a full compromise of the affected system. Users can quickly determine if they are running vulnerable versions of Java by pointing their browser to http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml. Java SE users can visit http://www.java.com and download the most recent release of Java SE to address these vulnerabilities. Because of the criticality of these vulnerabilities, and the publicity they received as a result of their disclosure before the availability of a fix, Oracle recommends that all customers and Java users update their Java installation to the most recent version (6 update 20).   If you've read this blog before, you probably know that Oracle desktop virtualization is used to demonstrate Oracle Applications at many different trade shows. This week, the Oracle desktop team is at DIA2012 in Philadelphia, PA. The DIA conference is a large event, hosting about 7,000 professionals in the pharmaceutical, bio technology, and medical device fields. Healthcare and associated fields are leveraging desktop virtualization because the model is a natural fit due to their high security requirements. Keeping all the data on the server and not distributing it on laptops or PCs that could be stolen makes a lot of sense when you're talking about patient records and other sensitive information. We're proud to be supporting the Oracle Health Sciences team at DIA2012 by hosting all of the Oracle healthcare related demos on a central server, and providing simple, smart card based access using our Sun Ray Clients. And remember that you're not limited to using just Sun Ray Clients--you can also use the Oracle Virtual Desktop Client and freely move your session from your iPad, your Windows or Linux PC, your Mac, or Sun Ray Clients. • Where to look for a programming partner?

  Say that you want to start a new project (I'm talking about a serious project — e.g if you had an idea that seems good and profitable — not about something you start just to learn a new technology or just for your enjoyment) but you don't feel like you can do it alone since, for example, you lack the experience or the technical skills to go through all the phases needed to go from the idea to the final product. Say also that you don't simply want to hire someone. You want someone who can be as passionate as you in the job, that is “proficient” in and enthusiast of the same technologies as you are and that possibly has a background similar to yours (e.g. you both are students, you both come from a prestigious univerity or just you're both Star Trek nerds). So, basically you don't want a person to tell what to do (e.g. “implement this and that, slave!”) but someone who can be inspiring and bring something new and important to your project. • Update Manager won't open (error related to pythonverbose)

  I'm having an issue with update-manager. Last night, my computer restart suddenly during the update process. Now it won't open and it keep appearing on the notifier with a message warning that an error occurred. The error is the same that is displayed when I try to open it on the terminal: Error in sitecustomize; set PYTHONVERBOSE for traceback: EOFError: EOF read where not expected Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/update-manager", line 26, in <module> from __future__ import print_function EOFError: EOF read where not expected I've already seen some questions here, but most of them are related to problems with ppas and the source.list file. This seems to be a bug on update-manager itself. I've already tried to remove it and install again, but the problem persists. I also noted another bug: my source-center doesn't open too. • Career opportunities for mid-20 .Net developer

  Recently, I have moved to Toronto and started exploring career opportunities here. My first impressions about .net developer/architect career are really controversial. Here options that comes to my mind right now: Grow as a developer, lead and solution architect in large and well-known company, like Logitech or IBM. Doing .net development medium size (10-30) software shops Joining some start-up guys First one, seems very bureaucratic with kills all programming fun, that is such valuable to me. And there is not a lot of start ups, that are based on MS technology stack. Good mid-size company seems like a best fit to me, since I can have a lot of fun, doing new projects. Previously I have been working at large (5000+) outsourcing provider as a .Net developer. I was kind of a 'vanilla' time, because our team were always doing massive scale projects from scratch, on latest .Net stack. I would really appreciate if you share pros and cons of path, that you have chosen and what you value most in your current project. I'll start: Pros for Mid-size You are really close to business and application consumers, without all bureaucratic papers Cons It seems, that career oportunities of vertical growth is rather limited, once I have to switch to my own company or join development team of some big players.

• From simple physics with a ball, to a more complicated shape

  Hello fellow game devs and stack overflowers... I recently made a transition from OpenGL ES 1.1 to 2.0 (on Android via NDK) and things are going well so far. I'm working on doing a dice rolling application (gaming dice up to 20 sided, not just regular 6 sided die) as a way to learn more about how physics is implemented in a gaming environment. I've explored implementing existing engine options (such as Bullet) and I don't think I need to implement something quite so sophisticated. I've found several tutorials that handle a lot of the general physics involved with initial trajectory, velocity, angle of contact and reflection angle, etc. I'm confident that I'd be able to implement ball-like behavior without much trouble. My question lies in when I attempt to make the interaction of the die shape with another surface more "realistic," for example... the die strikes the floor surface at such an angle where only one corner makes contact with the floor. In my mind, the center of gravity of the object would play a part in determining how the die bounces away, possibly even spinning it it faster, etc... but I am not sure what the actual math involved is. Are there any recommended resources for getting into this level of detail? Initial searches haven't turned up much... Thanks to everyone in the community, -Jeremiah
