• Should I use WPF or ASP.NET for my next Web Application development?

  We have a web application that has been built using MySQL / PHP / Javascript+JQuery, with server-side HTML generation. The problem is that of the 10 software developers that work for the company, none are PHP experts (we're all .NET / C# developers). I need to make a recommendation to my management team on which technologies to use as the platform for the next generation of web application products. I want to leverage the .NET / C# expertise which the company has and is otherwise building, and so am inclined to recommend some Microsoft technologies. We don't want a client-side plugin, and we don't need flashy animations/multimedia, so I'm ruling out Silverlight. Is WPF ready for primetime? Is ASP.NET deprecated by WPF? How do I choose between these two technologies? Big Question, I know... I can refine it based on your comments if necessary. Thanks for taking the time.

• How can I prevent 'objects you are adding to the designer use a different data connection...'?

  I am using Visual Studio 2010, and I have a LINQ-to-SQL DBML file that my colleagues and I are using for this project. We have a connection string in the web.config file that the DBML is using. However, when I drag a new table from my "Server Explorer" onto the DBML file... I get presented with a dialog that demands that do one of these two options: Allow visual studio to change the connection string to match the one in my solution explorer. Cancel the operation (meaning, I don't get my table). I don't really care too much about the debate as why the PMs/devs who made this tool didn't allow a third option - "Create the object anyway - don't worry, I'm a developer!" What I am thinking would be a good solution is if I can create a connection in the Server Explorer - WITHOUT A WIZARD. If I can just paste a connection string, that would be awesome! Because then the DBML designer won't freak out on me :O) If anyone knows the answer to this question, or how to do the above, please lemme know!

  I'm having a lot of trouble trying to track down the cause of this error message. I have a large Visual Studio 2010 solution which compiles without error on my local machine but on the build server, msbuild fails on one of the projects with the error: fatal error CS0002: Unable to load message string from resources Here's the red error section at the end: Build FAILED. "C:\TeamCity\buildAgent\work\85eff164854b9e67\Libraries\Domainface.Proxy.Common\Domainface.Proxy.Common.csproj" (default target) (9) -> (CoreCompile target) -> CSC : fatal error CS0002: Unable to load message string from resources. [C:\TeamCity\buildAgent\work\85eff164854b9e67\Libraries\Domainface.Proxy.Common\Domainface.Proxy.Common.csproj] 0 Warning(s) 1 Error(s) The entire msbuild output from the build server is here: http://pastie.org/3660842 What does the error generally refer to, that would cause it to build locally but not on the build server? UPDATE I have just run msbuild /version on both machines and it turns out the .net framework versions are very slightly different. Local machine is 4.0.30319.488 and build server is 4.0.30319.1. I'm about to run windows update on the server to allow it to install some updates, as several seem to be .net framework-related, so I'll see if that makes a difference. UPDATE Installing the updates didn't help. Just remembered I copied up csc.exe from the async preview a little while ago in order to facilitate async compilation (the actual async preview had failed to install on the server due to visual studio not being there, but installing visual studio team viewer seems to have fixed that, so i've just run the proper async ctp3 installer to see if that makes a difference.

• Can an interface be implemented across an aggregate/composite class in vb.net?

  VB.NET .NET 3.5 I have an aggregate class called Package as part of a shipping system. Package contains another class, BoxType . BoxType contains information about the box used to ship the package, such as length, width, etc. of the Box. Package has a method called GetShippingRates. This method calls a separate helper class, ShipRater, and passes the Package itself as an argument. ShipRater examines the Package as well as the BoxType, and returns a list of possible shipping rates/methods. What I would like to do is construct an Interface, IRateable, that would be supplied to the helper class ShipRater. So instead of: Class ShipRater Sub New(SomePackage as Package) End Sub End Class we would do: Class ShipRater Sub New(SomePackage as IRateable) End Sub End Class However, ShipRater requires information from both the Package and its aggregate, BoxType. If I write an interface IRateable, then how can I use the BoxType properties to implement part of the Interface? Is this possible?

• UCMA 3.0 How to build a list of recipients and then broadcast an IM call to those recipients

  I am developing an application using UCMA 3.0 that will run as a service and send out periodic 'broadcasts' in the form of Instant Message calls. I have been using the book "Professional Unified Communications Development with Microsoft Lync Server 2010" and have everything provisioned fine and am able to establish an application endpoint. I am stuck on two aspects though. 1) How to get a list of all users of Lync? Everything the UCMA can do is centered on a single user. For example it allows me to retrieve all contacts/groups present on a given users 'contact list' but does not provide any means to query for a list of available contacts that could be added to one of those contact lists. On the MSDN forum I found this post which leads me to think my best bet is simply to query AD directly. 2) What is the best way to actually send a broadcast style IM? My working premise is to attempt something like what I've found in this code example (specifically the public void SendIM() method). So, get a list of recipients from AD, (looping on each on to check current presence?), and then use Automation to make the IM call for each recipient in the collection. Does that make sense? Do I need to check presence of the recipient or do I just optimistically make the IM calls irregardless of their current presence status? Can anyone point me to some working code demonstrating sending an IM broadcast? You would think this is probably one of the most common use cases however the SDK samples do not cover it. Thanks in advance.

• VS2010 asking to upgrade SIlverlight??

  I'm running the absolute latest versions of Silverlight and Visual Studio 2010 Professional and built a solution that contained a WPF project. From there, I added a SketchFlow project (based on Blend 4 RC) and I can run each project within the solution just fine by setting whenever I switch between them as startup projects. From there, I added a Silverlight 4 Business Application (taking all the defaults), and when simply trying to set that as the startup project and running it, VS2010 is giving me the following error after trying to open a web page: Line: 56 (in file TestPage.aspx) Error: Unhandled Error in Silverlight Application Code: 8001 Category: InitializeError Message: Upgrade required If I choose not to debug, I get the Silverlight page saying "This page requires a more recent version of Silverlight"! Clicking "Install Now" on the popup window brings me to Mirosoft's Silverlight page where I see: "The version of Silverlight originally requested is not available. You can get a supported version from this page. This Web browser or operating system may not be compatible with Silverlight. Please review the system requirements and, if you wish to proceed, choose the link for your operating system." If I choose to upgrade anyway, I'm told that I'm running the latest version of Silverlight available. What the heck? I'm running the final versions of VS2010 Pro, Silverlight 4, and the latest version of Expression Blend 4 (RC). Why can't VS2010 run this default Silverlight Business App? Any ideas? Please?? • How test a Delphi app with Application Verifier 4.0?

  I download the Application Verifier 4.0 to test my App for check if could have problems on Vista/7. I run from Delphi 2010 debugger, and stop in CPU view. Obviously, I don't understand anything about assembler!. So, I try running directly from the windows explorer, and the App die. (In fact, I don't understand well what exactly will do App Verifier: I expect some kind of friendly message). • Assembly installed into the GAC not showing up in Visual Studio

  This sounds related to this question, but they aren't the same thing. That question had no assemblies showing up. Mine has everything except the specific one I installed. I'm hoping someone has a solution to this... am I doing something wrong? Or did I find some bug in VS? I am using Visual Studio 2010 Professional Beta 2 on Windows 7 Ultimate. I just downloaded Rhino Mocks and decided to install it into the GAC using the command-line utility GACUTIL. I then rebooted. • Displaying console output?

  I am currently creating a customer application for a local company. I have a datagridview linked to the customers table, and I am trying to link it up so that updates, inserts and deletions are handled correctly. I am very new to c# so I am starting with the basics (like about 2 days ago I knew nothing - I know vb.net, Java and several other languages though..). Anywho from what I understand anything output through Debug.WriteLine should only appear when in debug mode (common sense really) but anything output through Concole.WriteLine should appear whether or not in debug mode. However I have checked the immediate and output windows and nothing is being output when in normal mode. Does anyone have any idea why this is?? Edit: I have event handlers for clicking a cell - it should output CellClicked and set the gridview to invisible when a cell is clicked. The latter works whichever mode I am in, but CellClicked is only output in debug mode. I am using Console.WriteLine("CellClicked").

• ASP.NET MVC 3 - What features do you want to see?

  I know a bunch of people that are really enjoying the improvements that ASP.NET MVC 2 made over the first release. I have just started to migrate our MVC 1 project over and so far areas has totally cleaned up the subfolder mess we had in our large scale application. As I dive deeper into all the improvements and changes that were made I still keep thinking to myself man it would be nice if they had x in this release. For isntance, I would love it if they had some sort of dependency injection built in instead of having to use third party solutions. My real question is now that ASP.NET MVC 2 is out in the wild, what features do want/wish the team had implemented and hope they will implement for ASP.NET MVC 3?

• I have a problem sometimes in my vb.net webmail application?

  I have a weird problem in my vb.net web application sometimes. webmail webform with html editor, sometimes very rare users type for example more than 200 or 400 characters and send the message to other user. But the reciever only recieves 5 or 7 characters. 2 or 3 words of the message. I don know what is going on. I checked the code, no bugs everything is working fine.All the users are on Microsoft XPsp2 platform. Any help will be appreciated. Is this sufficient , or shall I provide any more input regarding the problem...?? OK I got it... the problem is when I type characters in HtmlEditor it keeps on continuing, i mean it should go to the end and automatically comes to the second line....but it is going on and on.how can I stop this.

• Problem with SQLite related nUnit-tests after upgrade to VS2010 and Re#5

  After converting to Visual Studio 2010 with ReSharper5 some of my unit tests started failing. More specifically this applies to all unit tests that use NHibernate with SQLite. The problem seem to be related to SQLite somehow. The unit tests that does not involve NHibernate and SQLite are still running fine. The exception is as follows: NHibernate.HibernateException : Could not create the driver from NHibernate.Driver.SQLite20Driver, NHibernate, Version=2.1.2.4000, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=aa95f207798dfdb4. ----> System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException : Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. ----> NHibernate.HibernateException : The IDbCommand and IDbConnection implementation in the assembly System.Data.SQLite could not be found. Ensure that the assembly System.Data.SQLite is located in the application directory or in the Global Assembly Cache. If the assembly is in the GAC, use <qualifyAssembly/> element in the application configuration file to specify the full name of the assembly. TearDown : System.NullReferenceException : Object reference not set to an instance of an object. The exception is the NullReferenceException on TearDown when cleaning up NHibernate objects that wasn't successfully created, but the problem seem to be related to SQLite somehow. I run my unit tests through ReSharper, but I get the same exception when running them directly through the NUnit.exe application. However, running them through the x86 variant (NUnit-x86.exe) all tests run fine. Can it be related to some mixing of 64bit and 32bit dlls? It still runs fine through VS2008 + ReSharper4.5. Note that the target framework of my projects still is .NET3.5. Anyone seen this problem before?

  I am using a WebBrowser-Control to fill in a webform and then click at a button, this currently results in a standard Download File Dialog (you get these if you download a file using internet explorer), but instead, I have to catch this file and save it automatically with a by me defined name to a specific folder. I am trying to code a little application in vb.net which download the Export-file from my wordpress-blog, and I want to do this completely without user-interaction. Currently everything works, except the downloading of the file. I tried to catch it with the event System.Windows.Controls.WebBrowser.Navigating(ByVal Object, ByVal System.Windows.Navigation.NavigatingCancelEventArgs) but I don't see where to download the file from :( I hope you guys can help me.

• Searching a set of data with multiple terms using Linq

  I'm in the process of moving from ADO.NET to Linq. The application is a directory search program to look people up. The users are allowed to type the search criteria into a single textbox. They can separate each term with a space, or wrap a phrase in quotes such as "park place" to indicate that it is one term. Behind the scenes the data comes from a XML file that has about 90,000 records in it and is about 65 megs. I load the data into a DataTable and then use the .Select method with a SQL query to perform the searches. The query I pass is built from the search terms the user passed. I split the string from the textbox into an array using a regular expression that will split everything into a separate element that has a space in it. However if there are quotes around a phrase, that becomes it's own element in the array. I then end up with a single dimension array with x number of elements, which I iterate over to build a long query. I then build the search expression below: query = query & _ "((userid LIKE '" & tempstr & "%') OR " & _ "(nickname LIKE '" & tempstr & "%') OR " & _ "(lastname LIKE '" & tempstr & "%') OR " & _ "(firstname LIKE '" & tempstr & "%') OR " & _ "(department LIKE '" & tempstr & "%') OR " & _ "(telephoneNumber LIKE '" & tempstr & "%') OR " & _ "(email LIKE '" & tempstr & "%') OR " & _ "(Office LIKE '" & tempstr & "%'))" Each term will have a set of the above query. If there is more than one term, I put an AND in between, and build another query like above with the next term. I'm not sure how to do this in Linq. So far, I've got the XML file loading correctly. I'm able to search it with specific criteria, but I'm not sure how to best implement the search over multiple terms. 'this works but far too simple to get the job done Dim results = From c In m_DataSet...<Users> _ Where c.<userid>.Value = "XXXX" _ Select c The above code also doesn't use the LIKE operator either. So partial matches don't work. It looks like what I'd want to use is the .Startswith but that appears to be only in Linq2SQL. Any guidance would be appreciated. I'm new to Linq, so I might be missing a simple way to do this. • How do I programatically add an article page to a sharepoint site?

  I've been given the task of content migration from another CMS system to SharePoint 2010. The data in the old system is fairly easy to capture and the page hierarchy is simple so I'm not worried about that. However, I am completely flummoxed about how to even create a page in code. I'm using the Microsoft.SharePoint.Client namespace as I do not have sharepoint installed on my system and am wanting to code this up as a console application and so I'm using I'm using ClientContext. (On the other hand, I am willing to go into other solutions if necessary). My end-game: To get a page uploaded into some folder hierarchy which uses a master page, has the page title in a header web part, and a big ol' content-editable web part in the body so any user can come along and edit the content. Things I've tried so far: Using FileCollection.Add() to add an aspx file to the folder "Site Pages". This renders the html in the browser but doesn't enable any features for the user to edit the page Using ListItemCollection.Add() to add a page to the site, but I didn't know what fields I needed. Also I remember it came up with a runtime error saying I should use FileCollection.Add() Uploading to 'Site Pages' instead of 'Pages' So many others... ow my head :( The only plausible thing I can see on the net is to use the PublishingPage type along with PublishingWeb. However, PublishingWeb can only be constructed from an SPWeb object which requires me to be actually hosting the sharepoint application on my workstation. If anyone can lend a hand that would be greatly appreciated :)

  I am trying to debug a HTTP Handler in Visual Studio and the break point is not getting hit. Does anyone have an idea on how to go about debugging HTTP Handlers in Visual Studio? I am using VS 2010 Premium, .NET 4.0 on a Windows 7 machine. In my Web Application I have a HTTP Handler in /HTTPHandler/TrackingHandler.cs The following is in my web config file: <system.webServer> <handlers> <add name="TrackingHandler" path="/tx/*" verb="*" type="ProjectNamespace.TrackingHandler" resourceType="Unspecified" preCondition="integratedMode" /> </handlers> </system.webServer> My HTTP Handler looks like below namespace ProjectNamespace { public class TrackingHandler : IHttpHandler { public bool IsReusable { get { return true; } } public void ProcessRequest(HttpContext context) { //Breakpoint on the very first line below string tracker = Path.GetFileName(context.Request.PhysicalPath); ....... } } } I start my Web Application using any random page in Visual Studio Debug using the builtin Web Server. I then maually edit the URL to point to the /tx/ directory and some random string after it. For e.g. my current URL looks like http://localhost:53699/tx/sdfs. I thought this should pull up the breakpoint on the first line of ProcessRequest() but it does not. I’d be grateful for any ideas. O. O.

• Problems with XAML WPF 4.0 Editor in VS2010

  Wondering if anybody else has found some very odd behaviour with the XAML/WPF 4 editor in VS2010. This only occurs if the project is using .NET 4. Whenever I tried to open a XAML document for editing, the window would appear to open for a split second and then vanish, but VS2010 would still list the window as open. The fault was eventually traced to having the "Reuse current document window, if saved" option under "Documents" in the "Environment" options checked. Once this was unchecked XAML 4 files opened as expected. As I said, this only appears to occur on projects targeted at .NET Framework 4 - those targeted at 3.5 worked without a problem, and the "Reuse current document window, if saved" appears to work fine on other files.

  Using the release version of Visual Studio 2010 I think there's a difference in the "Implement Interface" expansion from VS2008 If I speicify an interface and implement it in a class as so: public interface IRepository<T> where T : IModel { T Get<T>(int id); void Update<T>(); int Add<T>(T item); } public class MockRepository : IRepository<MockUser> { // ... } Then use the "Implement Interface" expansion and get this: public class MockRepository : IRepository<MockUser> { public T Get<T>(int id) { throw new NotImplementedException(); } public void Update<T>() { throw new NotImplementedException(); } public int Add<T>(T item) { throw new NotImplementedException(); } } Instead of what I expected public class MockRepository : IRepository<MockUser> { public MockUser Get<MockUser>(int id) { throw new NotImplementedException(); } public void Update<MockUser>() { throw new NotImplementedException(); } public int Add<MockUser>(MockUser item) { throw new NotImplementedException(); } } The IDE uses the type variable name from the generic interface definition T instead of the specified concrete type MockUser. Is this a bug? Or is something new just for VS2010 / .Net 4.0?

• Update image in ASP.NET page from memory without refreshing the page.

  I have a command line C# server and an ASP.NET client, they both communicate via .NET Remoting. The server is sending the client still images grabbed from a webcam at say 2 frames a second. I can pass the images down to the client via a remote method call and the image ends up in this client method: public void Update(System.Drawing.Image currentFrame) { // I need to display the currentFrame on my page. } How do i display the image on the a page without saving the image to the hard disc? If it was a winForms app i could pass currentFrame to a picturebox ie. picturebox.Image = currentFrame. The above Update method gets fired at least 2 times a second. If the client was a winForms app i could simply put picturebox.Image = currentFrame and the current frame on the screen would automatically get updated. How do i achieve the same effect with ASP.NET? Will the whole page need to be reloaded etc?

  Does anyone know how to get a CodeDomProvider in the new Microsoft.VisualStudio.TextTemplating.VSHost.BaseCodeGeneratorWithSite from the Visual Studio 2010 SDK? I used to get access to it just by in mere inheritance of the class Microsoft.CustomTool.BaseCodeGeneratorWithSite, but now with this new class it is not there. I see a GlobalServiceProvider and a SiteServiceProvider but I can't find any example on how to use them. • Save XML directly to Database with C#

  Here is a part of my xml file <teams> <team-profile> <name>Australia</name> <id>1</id> <stats type="Test"> <span>1877-2010</span> <matches>721</matches> <won>339</won> <lost>186</lost> <tied>2</tied> <draw>194</draw> <percentage>47.01</percentage> </stats> <squad> <player id="135" fullname="Shane Warne"/> <player id="136" fullname="Damien Martyn"/> <player id="138" fullname="Michael Clarke"/> </squad> </team-profile> </team> I have read somewhere that there is a way to save this XML directly to database. I am using VS2010. I have created the dataset, for the data i need from this xml. Is there any way to map this XML directly on dataset? Any other idea? I also have to save some other more complex XML files to database. I have tried xsd.exe to create xsd schema for this XML.

• Weird bug with C++ lambda expressions in VS2010

  In a couple of my projects, the following code: class SmallClass { public: int x1, y1; void TestFunc() { auto BadLambda = [&]() { int g = x1 + 1; //ok int h = y1 + 1; //c2296 int l = static_cast<int>(y1); //c2440 }; int y1_copy = y1; //it works if you create a local copy auto GoodLambda = [&]() { int h = y1_copy + 1; //ok int l = this->y1 + 1; //ok }; } }; generates error C2296: '+' : illegal, left operand has type 'double (__cdecl *)(double)' or alternatively error C2440: 'static_cast' : cannot convert from 'double (__cdecl *)(double)' to 'int' You get the picture. It also happens if catching by value. The error seems to be tied to the member name "y1". It happened in different classes, different projects and with (seemingly) any type for y1; for example, this code: [...] MyClass y1; void TestFunc() { auto BadLambda = [&]()->void { int l = static_cast<int>(y1); //c2440 }; } generates both these errors: error C2440: 'static_cast' : cannot convert from 'MyClass' to 'int' No user-defined-conversion operator available that can perform this conversion, or the operator cannot be called error C2440: 'static_cast' : cannot convert from 'double (__cdecl *)(double)' to 'int' There is no context in which this conversion is possible It didn't, however, happen in a completely new project. I thought maybe it was related to Lua (the projects where I managed to reproduce this bug both used Lua), but I did not manage to reproduce it in a new project linking Lua. It doesn't seem to be a known bug, and I'm at a loss. Any ideas as to why this happens? (I don't need a workaround; there are a few in the code already). • Why do I get CA1806 when I catch exception in C++/CLI?

  I've recently upgraded my project from Visual Studio 2008 to Visual Studio 2010. By enabling Code Analysis and compiling in Release, I'm getting warning CA1806: Do not ignore method results. I've managed to reduce the code that produces the warning to this code: .h file: public ref class Foo { public: void Bar(); }; .cpp file: void Foo::Bar() { try { } catch (const std::exception&) // here I get the warning { } } the warning: CA1806 : Microsoft.Usage : 'Foo::Bar(void)' calls 'Global::__CxxRegisterExceptionObject(void*, void*)' but does not use the HRESULT or error code that the method returns. This could lead to unexpected behavior in error conditions or low-resource situations. Use the result in a conditional statement, assign the result to a variable, or pass it as an argument to another method. If I try to use the exception value or do catch(...) the warning still appears. If I catch managed exceptions instead or compile in Debug I don't get the warning. Why do I get this warning? UPDATE I've decided to open a bug report on Microsoft Connect.

• Is it possible to convert Gregorian to Hijri date in Vb ?

  Hi, I have a table in sql where the date format is stored in Hijri. Now I am working on a vb.net application where I have to let the user update that dateField. So is it possible that if I place a datepicker(which is in Gregorian) and user selects the date and its converts into Hijri date before updating. I mean when the user selects the date and clicks the save button the date should be updated in hijri format in the sql . For now , the user is entering the date manually on a tms AdvEdit. Is there any code available to accomplish this task. Thanking you all in advance for your time and consideration.
